Brian Shaffer Interview ////// 770Part 1 of 1 www.TrueCrimeGarage.com How did Brian Shaffer a 27 year-old man at the time just simply disappear?  It's a question Columbus Police detectives and thousands from central Ohio have been asking for more than 18 years.  Brian Shaffer, was a medical student at The Ohio State University.  As legend has it; he walked into a campus bar and was never seen walking out.  Brian vanished after going out with friends on the evening of March 31st, 2006 to celebrate the beginning of spring break.  According to friends during the early morning hours of April 1st, Brian was separated from them, and they assumed he had gone home. Shaffer has not been seen or heard from since.  Columbus police have several theories about what happened; some suspicion has been directed at a friend.  While foul play is suspected, it has also been speculated that Brian might be living somewhere under a new identity.  Today we bring to you an interview with Columbus Police Sergent John Hurst who was the lead investigator in the Shaffer case.  Conducting the interview is the Captain and investigative journalist Maggie Freleng.  Beer of the Week - Henna Chocolate, Praline, Macaroon by More Brewing Company Garage Grade - 4 and a half bottle caps out of 5  Follow True Crime Garage on X and on Instagram - @TrueCrimeGarage. Please consider leaving a positive review for the show on your favorite podcast listening app.  Thanks for listening and thank you for telling a friend!

I am so excited to introduce a remarkable guest who is making a significant impact in the intersection of domestic violence and pet welfare. My guest, Orazie Cook, is the Founder and Executive Director of the Praline's Backyard Foundation. While she's been fortunate not to experience domestic violence herself, her upbringing instilled a lifelong dedication to volunteerism, inspired by her mother. During her college years, Orazie volunteered at a crisis line and later at a domestic violence shelter, where she witnessed survivors grappling with a heart-wrenching dilemma: the fear of their pets being harmed or used as bargaining chips to lure them back into dangerous situations. These experiences deeply influenced Orazie, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, as domestic violence cases surged, she took time to reflect and decided to take action. She established the Praline's Backyard Foundation, a unique initiative partnering with shelters, domestic violence survivors, dog boarding facilities, and fosters to provide and fund accommodations for survivors' pets. Orazie's background in public health and her passion for animal welfare motivated her to navigate the complex process of helping survivors secure safe housing for their pets. In this episode, Orazie shares her inspiring journey, her profound understanding of the bond between survivors and their pets, and the vital role of fostering. Her unique insights and unwavering commitment make her an ideal guest for this  Podcast." Join us to explore the transformative power of fostering and the significance of pets in survivors' lives, as we work together to ensure no pet is left behind.

When Bonnie's husband decided he wanted to possibly kill her, rather than, oh, we don't know, love and respect her, Bonnie knew she needed to run. But with a toddler, a three-day-old baby, two big dogs and a 30-pound tortoise in her care, finding a shelter that could help her proved nearly impossible. An estimated 70 percent of domestic violence survivors have pets, but only a fraction of domestic violence shelters have the resources available that allow pets to come with a survivor. As a result, survivors with pets stay an average of two years longer with dangerous, sometimes deadly, abusers, afraid to leave their animals behind. The nonprofit RedRover is hoping to change that, aiming to make at least 25% of shelters animal-friendly by 2025. In this episode, we hear from Bonnie (don't worry, her story has a happy-ish ending) and then from Katie Campbell, Director of Collaboration and Outreach for RedRover about their amazing efforts to make sure no pet is left behind. You might even want to consider signing up to be a volunteer (like Amanda did), support in some other way or apply for help. If you're a shelter that wants to become pet-friendly, check out DontForgetthePets.org for more info! Grassroots organizations around the country are currently helping to care for animals of survivors in danger, and your support would be amazing. Check out Praline's Backyard in Georgia, Hush Puppy Haven in Florida and Lost Our Home Pet Rescue in Arizona to start. (If you run a pet rescue org that helps DV survivors, give us a shout and we'll make sure to promote you on our socials!) Survivors in need can also check out the Animal Welfare Institute's Safe Havens mapping project which tracks all the safe havens where animals of DV victims could be fostered in times of crisis. Visit ToxicthePodcast.com for more resources, past episodes and Toxic merch, the proceeds from which go right back to organizations helping women escape violence.

I'm so pleased to share this interview with you today. I'm talking with Orazie Cook, the founder of Praline's Backyard. Her impactful dog daycare and boarding facility is inspired by a sobering statistic that affects women and dogs around the country. 10 million people in the US are affected by domestic violence each year. With roughly 50% of Americans owning dogs, that's 5 million dog owners who are impacted. The rough part is, the percentage of domestic violence shelters that can take pets is only about 15%. Orazie plans to make a difference in those numbers by providing housing for pets of individuals who are in a housing transition due to an unsafe relationship. Especially at this time of year, I hope that this episode warms your heart to know that there are people out there making a difference in the world. In addition to talking about the soon-to-be daycare and boarding facility, Orazie shares some great advice about changing careers to follow your passion for pets. Even if you feel that you don't have any pet industry experience on your resume - you do have a skillset and a zone of genius to tap into!
