Former policy on gay people serving in the United States military

Dawn Strobel grew up in Milwaukee and Cedarburg, WI. Her parents divorced when she was young. Dawns father is a Vietnam veteran who never spoke of his military experience and who Dawn did not have much interaction with while growing up. She would come to know him later in life. Dawn's mother remarried and yet she and her mother did not have a close mother daughter relationship. With the normal expectations of honor and a place to fit in Dawn enlisted in the United States Army knowing she would have to hide that she was gay. No amount of written English can describe the profound devastation, dishonor and depression she would experience in both military and civilian careers for over thirteen years. "I was in such a suicidal state that I couldn't live, but I couldn't die because I had kids. I was stuck in between". Only in her own words can this be described and only in her voice can we hear this indomitable spirit that has taken Dawn back into her second career in the the military to so honorably and courageously work to complete what she endeavored to achieve over a decade ago. In addition Dawn has the love and support of her wife and children who she loves so much. I'm joined by Ashley Grugin to discuss her experience as a bisexual, mixed race woman in the Air Force under Don't Ask Don't Tell and after it was repealed. We use very harsh language in this episode, but we do it to illustrate the experience of LGBTQ servicemembers over the last century.

Yesterday was an important day in progressing towards equality. The ban has been lifted. Gays and lesbians have been allowed to openly serve in the US armed forces since 2011. We explore what consequences were for being outed prior to Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and what it was like to serve under the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. This episode also looks at what conditions were like in Canada, and when things changed there.
This week, Derek is joined by his cousin Stevon Taylor who is a forensic microbiologist. He describes himself as humble, introvert and goofy. He first knew he was different around 3rd grade but didn't mention his sexuality publicly until the age of 21, when his mother approached him about his sexuality and she was very accepting. Stevon invites us to consider a very different perspective as he has never felt it to be necessary to tell his siblings about his sexuality because it won’t change anything about their relationship. He also hasn't told friends, co-workers, or people around him, always living by a "don't ask, don't tell" standard. Stevon opens up about sheltering himself growing up but how he really never felt lonely. He feels at times It’s been more difficult for him being black than being gay. Being black and gay and a scientist has had its barriers but Stevon feels the most difficult of them all is dating in Atlanta. . He thinks that there are just too many people in Atlanta, making it far more difficult for love and too many people looking for hook-ups. Now that Stevon is an adult he’s been suffering through depression just like most people. If he could tell his younger self anything, it would be to be more accepting and open. The longer you are alone the more difficult it is to accept someone in your space.

Today's guest is a 30 year old immigrant and veteran. Bryan hails from a Roman Catholic family and moved to the United States. He went and joined the Navy after high school and navigated his time in service during the "Don't ask Don't Tell" days. Bryan grew up being told homosexuality was wrong and hearing negative remarks from his family members solidified his internal turmoil. To admit to cheating or not admit to cheating? That is Carrie's question. Charlotte gets married to a guy she hasn't *really* slept with, and gets into a fight with Samantha about bridesmaid dresses. This week on Popular Education Radio: Nathaniel Boehme (he/him/his) is an LGBTQ Veteran, activist, and social worker. Boehme has served over 18 years in the U.S. Air Force and was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Today we'll talk about the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy. The DADT policy was established by Clinton in 1993 and stated that LGB service members are allowed to serve as long as they did not disclose their sexual orientation, or openly speak of homosexual relationships including marriages or other familial attributes while serving in the United States armed forces. On September 20, 2011 the Obama Administration repealed this policy but unfortunately as we find out in this episode, change takes time. Today Nathaniel will share his experiences. Currently, Nathaniel is an active service member at the Portland Air National Guard and in 2017, he was the first in Oregon and Washington to participate in a Pride parade in uniform with his Command’s approval. Lida Maxwell joins me to discuss her new book, Insurgent Truth: Chelsea Manning and the Politics of Outsider Truth-Telling. We discussed the contrasting nature of the disclosures of Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden and the way Manning's leaks placed her outside the lineage of respectable whistleblowing. We also talked about the relationship between Manning's gender identity and how her experience of living under Don't Ask Don't Tell in the US military informed her broader critique of American foreign policy. And we also chatted about the post-truth era and whether a return to the certainties of the pre-financial crisis period is possible.
