"Imposter syndrome can lead to self-doubt, fear, and an inability to connect with one's accomplishments."   In this episode, Jewel Love interviews Stevon Lewis, a licensed psychotherapist who specializes in treating individuals struggling with imposter syndrome. He discusses the impact of imposter syndrome on black men in particular and offers insights into its psychological origins and effects. Stevon also emphasizes the importance of seeking support and shares strategies for reducing the frequency, intensity, and duration of imposter syndrome.   Key Takeaways: Imposter syndrome is a phenomenon that affects many high achievers, including black men. Imposter syndrome often stems from childhood experiences of criticism and lack of praise or acknowledgement. Black men in high-level positions may feel like they don't belong due to being the only person of their race in the room. Seeking professional support, such as therapy or coaching, can help individuals overcome imposter syndrome and reduce its impact on their lives.   Links: ➡️ Stevon Lewis on Linkedin ➡️ Black Executive Men on Linkedin    If you are ready to take it to the next level, contact us today for a free consultation at www.blackexecutivemen.com

The painter Stevon Lucero was his own person through and through. He created his own style, which he called “metarealism,” and through painting he explored the outer bounds of consciousness, connecting dots no one else saw. When top Denver art galleries didn't seem interested in him or other Chicano artists, they started up their own thing — Chicano Humanities and Arts Council, or CHAC — paving the way for a surge of interest in Chicano art today. Lucero passed away last year, but not before finishing a room at the hottest gallery in town, Meow Wolf's Convergence Station, where “meta” is the name of the game. Host Bree Davies visited Convergence Station with Lucero's wife and fellow artist Arlette Lucero to discuss her husband's legacy and the special exhibition of his works opening there tomorrow. 05APR2003: Serving as a tank commander with A/1-64 Armor during the invasion of Iraq in 2003, SSG Stevon Booker and his unit were tasked with conducting a raid to test the remaining enemy defenses. The attack, later known as the "Thunder Run" began south of Baghdad with aims of moving through main roads until they reached the newly secured airport. SSG Booker and his crew were in the midst of this operation when they were engaged on multiple sides by enemy small arms and RPG fire. Booker opened the hatch and began firing his mounted machine gun at the numerous dismounted enemy elements at close range. Before long, his machine gun malfunctioned as the enemy forces pushed closer. Without hesitation, SSG Booker crawled out of his hatch, laid on top of the tank and began engaging targets with his rifle. As enemy elements attempted to maneuver into striking position, SSG Booker destroyed one after the other, helping to protect his column of tanks. As the column continued forward, SSG Booker remained in the prone position, completely exposed to the steady stream of enemy fire in order to ensure any dismounted targets were destroyed. After fighting this way for five miles, SSG Stevon Booker was struck and killed by enemy fire but his heroic act helped to ensure the armored element was able to complete the raid and link up with friendly units at the airport. For his actions that day, SSG Stevon Booker would be awarded, posthumously, the Distinguished Service Cross.

In this episode, we are speaking with Stevon Lewis, a therapist in private practice, who is truly demonstrating what it's like to be a therapist in the world who is making a bigger impact, without sacrificing his own mental, emotional, financial wellbeing in order to do it. He understands that both are possible - by getting out there, doing good work, and being seen, he is actually to give back and make a greater impact. We'll discuss how he is currently charging $250 per session, and has charged as much as $300 per couple.  He describes himself as a “6'2" dark-skinned Black man” out there in the world as a therapist who is really putting himself out there and being seen in a big way. He's been featured on podcasts, television, and is now doing executive coaching. He grew up in a working class family and came from all kinds of anxiety-laden money stories. He started out in debt and worked in community mental health. He continued to grow, learn, and push himself to become the person he wanted to become, and now he’s going to show YOU that if he can do it, so can you. In this episode, Stevon will share: His journey from community mental health to charging as much as $300 per session; How a conversation with Tiffany gave him the confidence to raise his fees from $150 to $200 cash pay; How he learned to value the worth of his work and charge accordingly; How he uses experimentation to take risks and take on opportunities that scare him; How he was able to give back and make a bigger impact by virtue of playing big in the world and charging premium cash fees; His 3 steps to charging premium fees in private practice as a person of color and while continuing to work with clients he is passionate about serving. Resources she used: Lean In. Make Bank. WellnessFi More about Stevon:  Stevon is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, speaker, and corporate consultant. This week, Derek is joined by his cousin Stevon Taylor who is a forensic microbiologist. He describes himself as humble, introvert and goofy. He first knew he was different around 3rd grade but didn't mention his sexuality publicly until the age of 21, when his mother approached him about his sexuality and she was very accepting. Stevon invites us to consider a very different perspective as he has never felt it to be necessary to tell his siblings about his sexuality because it won’t change anything about their relationship. He also hasn't told friends, co-workers, or people around him, always living by a "don't ask, don't tell" standard. Stevon opens up about sheltering himself growing up but how he really never felt lonely. He feels at times It’s been more difficult for him being black than being gay. Being black and gay and a scientist has had its barriers but Stevon feels the most difficult of them all is dating in Atlanta. . He thinks that there are just too many people in Atlanta, making it far more difficult for love and too many people looking for hook-ups. Now that Stevon is an adult he’s been suffering through depression just like most people. If he could tell his younger self anything, it would be to be more accepting and open. The longer you are alone the more difficult it is to accept someone in your space.

The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy

An interview with Stevon Lewis, LMFT on Race, Ethnicity, Culture, Privilege and Bias. Curt and Katie talk with Stevon about how white therapists and therapists of color can (and should) open up conversations on these important topics, looking at why it is so hard and why it is critical we do so anyway. It’s time to reimagine therapy and what it means to be a therapist. We are human beings who can now present ourselves as whole people, with authenticity, purpose, and connection. Especially now, when therapists must develop a personal brand to market their practices. To support you as a whole person and a therapist, your hosts, Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy talk about how to approach the role of therapist in the modern age. Interview with Stevon Lewis, LMFT Stevon Lewis is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist practicing in Torrance, CA. He earned Bachelors of Arts degrees in Psychology and Afro-Ethnic Studies from California State University, Fullerton. He also has a Master’s of Science degree in Counseling with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from California State University, Long Beach. Stevon began his therapy career in 2007 as a therapist at a community mental health agency in Long Beach working with the families of adolescents involved with the juvenile justice system. In this episode we talk about: Barriers that therapists of color face that white therapists do not How the curriculums of our clinical programs are based on white norms (and thoughts on what we should put in these curriculums to address this bias) The different perspectives that are missed when we rely on these white norms The othering of people of color in these programs How race and ethnicity come into the room How to obtain the information that you need, seeing the world from other perspectives The bias that can come up and turn into microaggressions How to seek knowledge without putting the responsibility of teaching on the people of color around you The value of curiosity and Google, cultural humility Ideas for productive conversations about culture, race, ethnicity How to identify what you are responsible for The impact of historical trauma, racial injustice, and slavery on the conversations now A deeper look at bias and the impact of individual and societal bias on our interactions The pain of shame, defensiveness, and perceived divisiveness that might hinder our progress The importance of white people talking about race, and of white allies How to identify if your program is pushing you to be white-normed Ideas to translate the lessons to apply to you as an individual and calling out “this isn’t going to work for me” Encouraging the conversations about how we are perceived by society and how that can impact the relationship in the room The idea that we can have feelings about the clients we see – the need to be conscious about it and releasing guilt about negative or neutral feelings about our clients   Our Generous Sponsor: Thanks again to our sponsor, Grief Education!
