In this week's Born to Watch episode, Matt and Damo dive into a quirky 80s classic that inspired guilty pleasure rewatches and dreams of window display romance: Mannequin (1987). Join the guys as they reminisce about how Kim Cattrall's Emmy and Andrew McCarthy's Jonathan brought a spark of movie magic into their lives. From Matt's pre-teen obsession with Kim Cattrall to Damo's confusion over the movie's inexplicable ancient Egyptian backstory, no stone is left unturned in this Mannequin (1987) Movie Review.Released on February 13, 1987 (nearly 38 years to the day!), Mannequin tells the story of Jonathan Switcher, a struggling artist whose life takes an unexpected turn when his mannequin creation comes to life. Played by Cattrall, Emmy is the dream girl in window dressing form—literally. The duo's escapades in a struggling department store are filled with over-the-top characters, 80s montages, and laugh-out-loud moments, making this film a surreal yet iconic time capsule. As the hosts explore the nostalgia factor, they note the undeniable charm of Andrew McCarthy, a quintessential Brat Pack star. Damo points out that McCarthy's relatable, down-on-his-luck artist is impossible to hate—even when dragging a mannequin around town in plain sight. Kim Cattrall, meanwhile, exudes charisma, foreshadowing her future role as the fearless Samantha in Sex and the City.Of course, the conversation wouldn't be complete without a nod to Mannequin's over-the-top supporting cast. James Spader shines as a sniveling antagonist, while G.W. Bailey (aka Captain Harris from Police Academy) essentially reprises his role as a bumbling authority figure. And then there's Hollywood Montrose, played by Meshach Taylor, whose flamboyant energy adds humour and heart to the film. The soundtrack gets its due praise, with the guys singing the praises (literally) of Starship's Oscar-nominated hit, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now." Fun fact: the song became one of the biggest singles of 1987, topping charts in both the U.S. and U.K. Yet despite its commercial success, Mannequin was panned by critics. Matt shares a particularly brutal review from Roger Ebert, who described the film as “dead.” Still, Damo counters with evidence of Mannequin's enduring appeal: a 46-week theatrical run and a cult following that persists today. The team breaks down the movie's highlights and low points in the Good, Bad, and Ugly segment. The guys rave about the film's outrageous opening scene set in ancient Egypt, complete with comedic subtitles. However, they can't help but cringe at questionable plot points—like the inexplicable romance centered on store displays and a climactic Benny Hill-style chase through the department store. And let's not forget the scene that drove Damo to rage: Andrew McCarthy casually tossing away a perfectly good choc wedge!Throughout the episode, Matt and Damo strike a balance between affectionate nostalgia and merciless critique. They reflect on how Mannequin epitomises the era's campy charm while acknowledging that its caricatured characters and absurd premise could never fly in today's world of high-concept blockbusters. So, if you're ready for a stroll down 80s memory lane filled with synth scores, big hair, and mannequins that spring to life, this episode is for you. Tune in for laughs, trivia, and some wild tangents about department store nostalgia, robot brothels, and Wilford Brimley's ageless face.Don't miss this blast from the past! I couldn't help but wonder if Samantha should be the one writing a book about sex. Maybe she could finally explain where the G-spot is, or would it just end up being an episode of CBC? This week, we are pleasuring ourselves with Canadian sex god Kim Cattrall's book "Sexual Intelligence." We go deep inside the part history-part outsider art photography book and discuss ancient aphrodisiacs, what Toronto singles really want in bed, the phallus in art, oysters, female Viagra, bundles of nerves, outdoor lovemaking, and where our fantasies really come from.Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/cbcthepodSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall portrayed best friends Carrie and Samantha on Sex and the City. But behind the scenes, they were anything but friendly. There were major pay discrepancies, bitter contract negotiations, plenty of online sniping, and a reboot that excluded Cattrall's character, enraging fans. Add all that friction up, and just like that, we've got an A-list feud. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline can be reached at 988. We know what you're thinking: "How did it take you 348 episodes to get to Police Academy?" The truth is we just needed one brave citizen to step up against that crime and commission this 1984 comedy giant. Shat The Movie legend Adam R. answered the call. With the six film sequels and the animated series that followed this movie," it's easy to assume the original "Police Academy" stands strong on its own. Steve Guttenberg is at his hunky Jew best. Kim Cattrall brings some spice to the mix. And G.W. Bailey is hilariously hateable as Lt. Thaddeus Harris. But this movie has some problems. The Motormouth joke gets old pretty fast. The cadet roster is unnecessarily overloaded. Many of the jokes are tired and predictable. And Big D really didn't care for the ending. What surprised us most in this 2023 viewing was how progressive "Police Academy" was, how anti-establishment it was for a police movie and how many boobs came out at the bonfire party. One thing's for sure: We'll never look at a lectern the same way again. Candace Bushnell steps Behind The Rope. With all this talk from behind the scenes on “And Just Like That”, we could not think of anyone better to sit down and chat about it all with than the woman who started it all! Candace starts at the beginning - just how much life changed when her regular column for “The New York Observer” and best selling “Sex and the City" Anthology was turned into an international blockbuster show of epic magnitude for HBO. Candace talks about this transition, Darren Star, the birth of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, Miranda - which are you?, and the casting of Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon which has forever changed her, their and our lives for the better. Never has there been a show that integrated fashion and pop culture so well. Magnolia Cupcakes, Cosmos, and Manolo Blahniks have never looked the same since. Candace chats about her own fashion, Pat Field, the many men of “Sex” that came and went, and how her own love of New York City helped shape the Big Apple as the fifth lead character. We pay homage to many of Candace's other NY Times Best Selling Novels such as The Carrie Diaries and Lipstick Jungle (Brooke Shields, anyone?). Of course we chat “And Just Like That”, the lack of Samantha and what really went on backstage between SJP and Ms. Cattrall. Being a permanent fixture on the scene in NYC and The Hamptons, Candace is friends with many a RHONY. We chat about The Real Housewives of NYC - who does she know, would she ever join, what type of Housewife would she be, being told "Not Well Bitch" by Dorinda - kinda and finally, is there any sex in her city? Thank you Ms. Bushnell. Did we really need to dust off Sex and the City in 2021 and reboot it? Were fans clamoring to return to a fancy and privileged AF NYC in a post-COVID, post-Trump world? Regardless of how you feel about the SATC machine, HBO Max just dropped the first two episodes of And Just Like That…, picking up about 10 years after the disastrous SATC 2 movie with Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda but without Samantha - due to a falling out between SJP and Kim Cattrall that the general public might never understand. We've made it to season 6B! Charlotte volunteers for the blind, Miranda has to deal with her ex, and Samantha does something mean as hell to Smith. As for Carrie, she continues her love affair with the Russian.
We have a Russian in the mix! Miranda can't say I love you to one man, Samantha has a downstairs situation, and Charlotte's story is sad. Carrie meets Alexander Petrovsy (aka Mikhail Baryshinikov).
We get a blast from the past. But first, Charlotte gets an acupuncturist, Samantha learns to hold hands, and Miranda continues on with Blair Underwood. As for Carrie, Big is back.
It's hard to believe, but we're halfway through the last season. Samantha wants in on the Soho House, Miranda goes to a basketball game and scores, and Charlotte doesn't have a story line. As for Carrie, she has a thing with a high school fling.
This episode is classic SATC, which we love. Charlotte learns to compromise, Miranda meets a HOT doctor, and Samantha doesn't really have a storyline. Also, someone steals Carrie's shoes! Added bonus: 2 cameos
It's a special episode. Charlotte gets MARRIED, Miranda hides from reality, and Samantha can't get her clothes off by herself. Our Carrie has to deal with an out-of-towner.
We don't know what the title means. Miranda gets into her skinny jeans, Charlotte deals with a second marriage, and Samantha regrets getting what she asked for. As for Carrie, that Post-It becomes a get out of jail free card.
What in the hell does this title mean? You tell us. Miranda realizes she can't have it all, Samantha makes Smith the Absolute hunk, and Harry walks back into Charlotte's life. As for Carrie - Burger sucks, and he breaks up with her on a Post-It. Ugh - He's the WORST.
We're on episode 5 of this season, and things are truckin' along. Charlotte misses Harry, Miranda misses Steve, and Samantha creates Smith Jared. As for Carrie, Burger just SUCKS.
In this interesting episode, we see Charlotte act like a MEAN GIRL, Samantha get into role play, and Red Dragon learn an empowering lesson. As for Carrie, Burger keeps throwing up red flags, but she's not reading them.
It's our last episode of 2019! Charlotte says goodbye to Christmas, Samantha offends soon-to-be Smith Jared, and Miranda goes all Red Dragon on Steve. As for Carrie, she deals with the ghost of Burger's ex.
Erin and Paul review two films about supernatural goings-on within department stores: Peter Strickland's bizarre new horror film IN FABRIC, and the 1987 romantic comedy MANNEQUIN. Plus: our quick takes on a wheelbarrowful of big new releases: MARRIAGE STORY, DIAMANTINO, 6 UNDERGROUND, QUEEN & SLIM, THE TWO POPES, JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL, RICHARD JEWELL, BOMBSHELL, A HIDDEN LIFE, CATS, and STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER.
Season 6A is underway, and the gals are movin' through life. Charlotte wants to convert, Miranda gets a Tivo, and Samantha finally meets Smith! As for Carrie... Let's just say the sex with Burger is not all that. (duh)
Welcome to season 6A. Charlotte is thinking of converting, Red Dragon goes full on RED and acts weird with Steve, and Samantha gets stock market advice. As for Carrie, she's freaking out about Burger. Oh, and we see Aidan again.
Can you believe it's the season finale??? They cheated us out of 10 more episodes, but everyone is pregnant. They all go the Hamptons. Samantha borrows Richard's house, Charlotte says I love you, and Miranda still has a kid. As for Carrie...Ugh...Burger returns.
Girls on a train! Red Dragon has no storyline, Charlotte bangs Harry, and Miranda gets taken for a ride... ON A TRAIN with Carrie! Off to San Francisco and Big.
The gals are going through it in this one. Miranda is a mommy mess, Charlotte fights Bunny, and Samantha needs a new vibrator. Carrie annoyingly ruminates over Aidan's heartache.
The book launching party is upon us! Samantha gets a chemical peel, Bunny invades Charlotte's space, and Red Dragon gets some strange. Carrie meets Burger...UGH.
No time for lo mein, this week we're getting into BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA! Starring Kurt Russell, Dennis Dun and Kim Cattrall, Big Trouble in Little China is the tale of a brawny, loudmouth white dude who stumbles into the world of Chinese street gangs and ancient magic. A huge box office flop when it was released, John Carpenter's attempt at a martial arts film has since become a cult favorite. We were terrified and confused about it when we were younger, but how does it hold up now? Listen, and don't forget to subscribe and rate us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or Stitcher. You can also support us by either contributing Patreon campaign, or purchasing Rewatchability t-shirts at TeePublic!
We had a hoot with this one! Charlotte discovers Amazon, Miranda joins Weight Watchers, and Samantha gets caught with the UPS guy's pants down. Carrie is just being judgmental, and she's shooting the cover of her book.
We're in Atlantic City! Miranda feels fat, Samantha can't trust Richard, and Charlotte buys a dress from the gift shop. Our gal, Carrie, is being an annoying high maintenance friend.
Ugh. Samantha is back with Richard, Charlotte goes to a relationship guru seminar, and Miranda gets little Brady baptized. As for our gal, Carrie, she's landed herself a book deal! (With Amy Sedaris and Molly Shannon!)
How does season 5 start off? It's fleet week in NYC! Everyone (except Carrie) shows their boobs. Red Dragon deals with new mom issues, Charlotte needs to get some strange, and Samantha pines over Richard. Bleck. As for Carrie, don't worry about her. She's dating...New York!
It's the season finale!!! Samantha finally dumps Richard, Red Dragon has her little dragon, and Charlotte's storyline is a snooze-fest. Carrie and Big have a moment and then...he's gone.
We're at Vogue, and Carrie won't let us forget it. Charlotte throws a baby shower for Red Dragon, Red Dragon doesn't want a baby shower, and Samantha has a special present for Richard's b-day. Carrie is at Vogue, Vogue, Vogue. She says it 500 times.
This is a good one, friends. Samantha fishes for an "I love you," Miranda cannot stop farting, and Charlotte is being a bitch. As for our Carrie, she may be homeless, y'all!!!
