Today on the podcast I am chatting to Josephine Hatch, who is an Innovation Director with over 20 years of experience in foresight, cultural strategy, and brand innovation. Now, you might not totally know what any of that means, but basically, we are talking about trend forecasting! One of the things that really struck me during our chat is that, as creatives and small business owners, many of us do this instinctively without having the formal language for it. This conversation gave me such a good framework for being more strategic about looking at culture and making plans for my business and honestly, Jo's perspective gave me such a boost regarding the value of human creativity. Key Takeaways Foresight vs. Fads: While "trends" are often associated with fast fashion or fleeting fads, foresight is about spotting signals and understanding the macro forces that impact human behaviour. Human Truths Remain: Technology and context change, but fundamental human truths—like the need for connection or joy—stay the same. Successful brands understand how to tap into these enduring feelings. The AI Counter-Movement: As generative AI adoption grows, there is a strong counter-trend towards the "human." People are increasingly valuing imperfections, analog hobbies, and genuine human curation. Look Outside Your Bubble: Real innovation rarely comes from looking at your direct competitors. Instead, look to other industries, art, and culture for inspiration to disrupt your own category. Episode Highlights 02:51 – Joe explains her background and how an Alexander McQueen runway show sparked her interest in how fashion mirrors society. 06:49 – We discuss why "trend" has become a dirty word and the difference between short-term fads and long-term foresight. 12:56 – Joe shares incredible free resources and tools that small businesses can use to spot cultural shifts. 20:23 – A fascinating look at AI, including why the "human touch" is becoming a premium and the rise of analog hobbies. 33:17 – Simple habits you can adopt to become more culturally curious, including how to document the things that inspire you. About the Guest Josephine Hatch is an Innovation Director at The Otherly, an innovation and brand agency that works with global brands and small businesses to help them defend their space and grow with intent. Our life expectancy is increasing. But as we live longer, the significant milestones in our lives, the ones we traditionally measure our progress against, are becoming further apart. Harder to reach. So, we find ourselves seeking more frequent markers – the ‘little and often' things that allow us to build a personal narrative of progress and give us a sense of control over our lives. Brands and organisations have a significant role to play in this space. As allies in our quest for progress and success, and symbols of how well we're travelling. It's a powerful space, but only for those who can read the room – those who can tap into the cultural context and innovate to create value and meaning. Geothermal emissions of methane and CO2 could soon be put to good use. Work is underway in Rotorua to create livestock feed from the gasses in world-first research that could net the country $500 million by 2045. The feed would be created from protein rich biomass, produced when microorganisms feed off greenhouse gas emissions captured from geothermal power stations. Upflow Business and Innovation Director Andy Blair told Mike Hosking that they're testing if the system is scalable, to see how they can make it economically viable and sustainable for the commercial market. The feed is unlikely to be bulk food, he said, but additives instead, since it's not a cheap thing to produce. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Who hasn't spent time pondering over the multitude of options thrust upon us when buying a rail ticket and mulled over the permutations and consequences of advanced, off peak, super off peak day return, open return…. Who hasn't spent time on their journey wondering “is my ticket actually valid?”Who hasn't then wondered “why is buying a rail ticket so blooming difficult!?Well, thankfully, the Railway Industry Association certainly has. In fact, its new report Destination: Revenue Growth highlights research finding that “complexity proved to be the biggest issue in train travel, with a fifth of travellers (20%) unable to find the cheapest ticket for their journey and 58% believing there are simply too many ticket options.”It is an issue that the rail sector has to tackle if it is going to both entice more customers onto the railway and collect the revenue along the way.Not least given that the future – the present actually - is one of digital no-ticketing. The digital world is already transforming ticketing in every part of the transport and service sector and frankly, rail has to get on board. Fast. But how? Well joining me on the podcast today is Milda Manomaityte, Innovation Director at the Railway Industry Association and the co-author of this report. So I suppose, having been immersed in this knotty issue for quite some time, she should know the answer! Let's hear! Five years ago when I started this podcast I never thought I'd see small craft brewers making products like hard seltzers, low carb and non-alcoholic beers, or “cervezas” that to me look very much like the macro lagers they originally railed against. But these are interesting and challenging times in the drinks industry. All producers are currently grappling with a plethora of economic headwinds and the need to cater for increasingly health conscious consumers.Chris Moschos, who is innovation director at Lion, is better placed than most to speak about these trends.Prior to joining Lion – Australia's second biggest brewer – in February 2022, Chris worked for almost 14 years at spirits company Diageo Australia. In this interview, Chris and I speak about a couple of Lion's big bets in 2023. James Squire Stride, the first low carb beer released by the pioneering craft beer brand in its 25-year history. And Kirin Hyoketsu, a premix vodka lemon sour that's been phenomenally successful in Japan, where it's been available since 2001.This is a special episode of the Drinks Adventures podcast, produced in partnership with Lion. And given Chris's job title, I started this interview by asking what the word ‘innovation' means to him.

Host Jenny Herald's guest on this episode of Dreams With Deadlines describes himself as the Chief Cheerleading Officer and OKR Shepherd for his successful digital marketing, interactive and creative agency. As founder of both Green Parrot and Develtio, a spin-off software company that transforms traditional services into digital products, Szymon Paroszkiewicz has woven OKR initiatives into his company's culture – with great results! He's sharing insights about what it looks like to implement new systems and processes within a services-oriented workplace culture.Key things discussed How to juggle objectives in a fluid, client-centric environment. The importance of making room for failure along the way, iterating OKRs that work for your specific corporate culture and needs. Where you're likely to see OKR value-add – saving time, optimizing resources, fostering communication, and boosting revenue. Show Notes [00:02:30] Origin Story: How Szymon became an OKR convert and ultimately an evangelist at his ad agency and spin-off software company. [00:04:10] Going Large: How Szymon initially went with a wholesale, up-and-down the enterprise approach to introducing OKRs – with mixed (if promising) results. [00:05:15] A Bespoke Strategy: Why internal OKR goal-setting and incremental adjustments are easier for teams to implement than going strictly by the book. [00:11:48] Customer Satisfaction: What it looks like to map OKRs as client-centered service providers, including: Staying focused on OKRs as an internal measure of progress and results. Using KPIs, like sales revenue, unique users, or amount of features delivered on time as the measures for project success. [00:14:25] Team Sport: Why it was important to adapt OKR strategies that worked at the board and managerial level in ways that served the development and success of individual contributors by keeping the process team-oriented. [00:16:00] Chasing Success: How Szymon positions KPIs like revenue relative to influencing OKRs as a byproduct rather than a hyper-focus dominating overall OKRs. [00:18:35] Thumbs Up: Even though the process can be time-consuming and requires resources, Szymon believes OKRs offer consulting businesses tremendous upsides. [00:20:35] Overcoming Resistance: How modeling commitment and flexibility through various iterations in OKR implementation eventually secures buy-in across teams. [00:22:49] Long-Term Champions: A look at the shift in dynamics as early adopters sometimes lose interest and early resisters come to enthusiastically embrace the metrics, enhanced communication and other benefits iterative OKRs confer. [00:25:15] Quality Control and What It Looks Like to Measure for Success: Celebrating wins (something Szymon wants to do more frequently) Reevaluating metrics based on how easily they were met Analyzing objectives that failed for clarity and, where necessary, restating Building on what's working and optimizing through iteration Hosting company-wide post mortems to provide transparency on OKR progress [00:27:30] Before & After OKRs – and Their Net Business Impacts: Overall savings through reduction in wasted time, resources and energy Fewer, but more focused and effective initiatives at all levels of the company A clear roadmap that provides employees – especially newer hires – access to the objectives and processes that support corporate success Communication and transparency to support the execution of goals [00:30:38] Celebrating Success: About how OKRs have supported the recent integration of a new CRM system – and scores of other value-adds up and down the organization. [00:32:47] Quick-Fire Questions for Szymon: What's Your Dream With a Deadline? To create systems that support a holistic life personally and on a professional level to create platforms to help manage the accelerating impacts of AI on the digital marketing and ad space. What's Next for Your OKR Program? Not overthinking or unnecessarily tinkering with initiatives that are in place and working; perhaps adding monitoring tools. Advice For Someone Just Starting Out?
