Missouri's governor has signed bipartisan legislation from State Rep. Dave Griffith (R-Jefferson City) that requires the Missouri Veterans Commission (MVC) to review current practices and to recommend additional efforts to prevent veteran suicides. Chairman Griffith joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", saying the bill is needed and that veterans are taking their lives. He says MVC will be able to hire more staff because of the bill. Chairman Griffith is disappointed that Governor Mike Parson (R) has vetoed $1-million approved by the Legislature for Columbia's Welcome Home Veterans homeless shelter. Welcome Home, which is located on the Business Loop, provides transitional and emergency shelter, permanent housing, job assistance and wrap-around supportive services to at-risk and homeless veterans. Chairman Griffith tells listeners that he's disappointed, noting that it's the second straight year that Parson has vetoed the $1-million for Welcome Home. Representative Griffith tells listeners that the money would be used to expand the house and to help get more Columbia-area homeless veterans off the streets. Missouri lawmakers will return to Jefferson City in September for the annual veto session. Chairman Griffith tells listeners that there is no appetite from state lawmakers to override the governor's line-item vetoes:

Isolation is an issue I have experienced first-hand as a veteran who lives with depression and PTSD, as a result of military service. I've battled that by creating connections through service organizations that help veterans reconnect to their purpose and community. Now all of us find ourselves in a situation where we are isolated. So how have these organizations adjusted their mission of helping and supporting veterans when so many aspects of what they have offered is unavailable in many places. In this episode, I discuss these issues with the leaders of three veterans' service groups - Team Rubicon, Continue Mission and Team Red, White and blue. In normal times, these groups provide a lifeline that offers camaraderie and opportunity for renewed purpose. The outbreak of COVID-19 and the associated precautions haven't changed their missions, but it has changed how they serve veterans and their families. The West Australian branch of the Returned and Services League has backed down on its controversial decision to ban the Aboriginal flag and Welcome to Country ceremonies during their Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services. The decision to ban West Australian RSLs from flying Aboriginal flags or having Welcome to Country ceremonies at their memorial events for fallen soldiers was revealed in a new Cultural Commemoration Policy on Friday. The RSL branch has now apologised for any offence caused by the policy, saying they are concerned it had been “open to misinterpretation”.The decision to update the policy was sparked after the board received complaints after the traditional Ode of Remembrance poem was recited in an indigenous Noongar language at an Anzac service last year, by Professor Len Collard. The new cultural commemoration policy noted there has “been a trend among sectors of the Australian community to seek to include specific cultural and ethnic elements into major commemorative events”. The RSLWA said the policy did “not serve to divide, but to unite”.The new policy imposed all content at Anzac and Remembrance Day services be in English, except the New Zealand National Anthem; only flying the Australian, New Zealand and WA flags on these days and; having no Welcome to Country ceremonies on these days.A Welcome to Country is a ceremony held at the beginning of events in Australia to bring awareness about the traditional history and cultural owners of an area. The policy drew swift backlash from politicians and commentators online, including from WA Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ben Wyatt, who called the policy “regrettable and divisive”.Veterans Issues minister Peter Tinley, a veteran, said Aboriginal people wore the uniform for 87 years before they were even counted as Australians.“The RSL has got it wrong and I’m appalled that in this day and age that they would be so prescriptive,” he told reporters.“This really hurts, this really strikes at the heart of reconciliation,” he said.“I don’t accept the concept that First Nation Australians, who have continuous occupation of this land for 50,000 years, are tagged into a multicultural bucket … they have a very special part of our story.”After receiving harsh backlash over the policy, the RSLWA announced it would be revising the policy yesterday, saying the branch’s guidelines had been misunderstood.“Given the level of community reaction to RSLWA’s advisory policy on cultural matters relating to commemoration, this policy has now been withdrawn,” The RSLWA said in a statement. The branch said it was concerned their position “had unfortunately drawn misunderstandings of its intent”.“RSLWA values and respects the Australian indigenous community and, in particular, indigenous veterans,” the statement said.“RSLWA accepts the policy may have been open to misinterpretation.“Its advisory policy will be reviewed and relaunched in the near future following further dialogue with interested parties.”The president of the RSLWA Peter Aspinall yesterday apologised for any offence caused.“I believe it’s a misunderstanding of what we intended in the way we wrote the cultural respect policy,” Mr Aspinall said.

On this episode of Comic Church we're talking: about how it takes a village to raise a kid, are SSRI medications the underlying connecting line between mass shootings, Mental Health and Veterans Issues. Drew & Sean share news about their new radio show/podcast Utah Veterans Radio Network and how medications are making the veteran PTSD issues worse. They'll also get into new movie releases, Disney Plus and of course... Star Wars, Rise of the Skywalker predictions and the sweet new LARP Star Wars hotel experience at Walt Disney World... Drew the Fairy God Bro is kinda stoked about experiencing it! All this and a whole lot more of sarcasm, and borderline offensive conversations, right here at Comic Church!
So tonight its Memorial Day weekend and I felt it fitting to have Veterans sit and discuss what Memorial Day is to them and Veterans Issues

High Caliber Community All founders of High Caliber Community (HC2) are veterans or currently serving. We have all been in the Armed Forces long enough to recognize the need for the services HC2 will provide. Our ultimate goal is to decrease the rising rate of veteran suicide by helping vets find other vets and locate resources, without having to search large databases or read through a great deal of content before realizing a specific service may not even be available to them. The veteran suicide rate is increasing at a devastating pace; we all see this problem every day, and many of us relate to it personally either by our own experiences or by the loss of loved ones. We are fighting the war against veteran suicide; High Caliber Community is designed to be a fighting force to help win that battle We bring a variety of talent to the team; leaders in the military and in civilian life, running non-profit organizations, volunteering to help Veterans in America, starting up veteran-owned businesses, serving in elite positions in the military and as a contractor. Each member of the core team is dedicated to creating an exceptional service for the veteran community. We are committed to giving back to those who have served and leaving an impact, in a significant way. Warrior Built The mission of “Warrior Built” seeks to honor the service and sacrifice of combat veterans and wounded service members who served our country by providing vocational and recreational opportunities. Vocational and recreational opportunities break through walls and foster an environment of healing, where great memories are born and new support systems are formed. “Built” by combat veterans for combat veterans “Built” on our core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment “Built” with the unrelenting drive to make a difference “Built” remembering the Warrior Ethos we learned serving our country PURPOSE The purpose of our foundation is to provide new motivation, camaraderie and to spark their imagination while most importantly offering a release to cope with similar difficulties in a positive and therapeutic way. We do this in a safe, fun and supportive environment all while providing much needed different forms of therapy. “Building Spirits, Souls and Machines” OBJECTIVES Vocational therapy is conducted in our “Warrior Built Garage” where we give combat veterans the opportunity to be exposed to the world of fabrication and the mechanics of different types of vehicles. Whether it is an off-road vehicle, race car, classic car or motorcycle, we give them a chance to figure out if they want a future in the fabrication and mechanic industry. Recreational therapy consists of attending different events that fuel the motivation and adrenalin for our combat veterans. We do this by bringing them to events such as dirt bike races, drag racing, off-road racing, concerts, and planning camping trips to the sand dunes, off-road parks, rivers, lakes etc… We also help combat veterans pursue their desires to enter and compete in different types of action sports and races such as the Baja 1000 off-road race. The camaraderie and motivation that sparks from these projects we build and the events we attend have changed the lives of the combat veterans who have given so much to our country.
