En juillet 2024, Magaly apprend qu'elle est atteinte d'un cancer du sein. Un mois plus tard, pour célébrer leurs 25 ans de mariage, son mari organise le renouvellement de leurs vœux. Magaly réserve un domaine et verse un acompte de 6.972€. Quelques semaines plus tard, l'événement est annulé par l'organisatrice pour des raisons liées au domaine. Magaly demande alors le remboursement de son acompte mais malgré plusieurs relances, il n'a jamais été restitué. Después de unos meses de pausa, este episodio es muy especial por varias razones, Octobre es un mes significativo, ya que es el Mes de Concientización sobre el Cáncer de Mama. Este episodio también marca una ocasión especial, ya que acabamos de finalizar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, y estamos emocionados de traerles nuestro primer episodio en español. Hoy contamos con una invitada increíble, Magaly Flores Lagunas, a quien he tenido el honor de conocer por más de 18 años. Ella es parte de mi famila, famila Lagunas,ya que es cunada de mi esposo. Magaly tiene 46 años, está casada y es madre de tres hijos de 12, 17 y 28 años. Magaly es una sobreviviente de cáncer de mama; fue diagnosticada en agosto de 2018, a los 39 años, con carcinoma ductal in-situ. Hoy, ella es voluntaria en la organización Alas Wings Asociación Latina de Asistencia y Prevención de Cáncer de Seno, donde brinda apoyo a otras mujeres latinas que están atravesando por este camino. Este tema es importance por que el cáncer de mama es el tipo de cáncer más comúnmente diagnosticado entre las mujeres hispanas y latinas en los Estados Unidos. La experiencia de Magaly es un recordatorio poderoso de la importancia de la detección temprana y de la fortaleza que nos brinda el apoyo familiar, comunitario y mental en momentos de gran desafío. Magaly is a mechatronics engineer turned marketing manager who moved from Costa Rica to the United States seven years ago to become a skydiver. She achieved remarkable success, medaling at the world championships. However, the post-podium thrill faded, prompting Magaly to shift gears by changing careers and adopting new interests – the very ADHD way to live life!   Magaly Sandoval's lifelong relationship with ADHD began in childhood when she was diagnosed at a young age. Despite excelling academically, her impulsivity, difficulty with social situations, and rapid task completion with missed instructions signaled her ADHD challenges. As she matured, Magaly recognized the profound impact of ADHD on various aspects of her life, including bouncing between hobbies and jobs, facing academic struggles, and navigating personal relationships.    This realization served as a wake-up call, prompting her to embrace a slowed-down life focused on continuous learning, such as exploring languages and training her puppy. The Food and Drug Administration has approved gene therapy as a treatment for sickle cell disease, effectively making a cure available to many people affected by the genetic disease. Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders and is the most common form of an inherited blood disorder.  In this episode, Kai is joined by Ashley Valentine of Sick Cells, which seeks to elevate the voices of the patient community to influence decision makers and empower people with the disease to use their voices and not feel alone. Ashley co-founded the organization along with her late brother Marqus Valentine, who had sickle cell disease. She helps put this historic F.D.A. decision into context and shares how her own life experience informs her work advocating for people with sickle cell disease.  Plus, we meet 21-year-old Magaly Ghonda, who underwent her own sickle cell treatment.
