Often people ask, at what point do we resist? Before there is resistance, there is non-compliance. Resistance is what you DO to push back. Non-Compliance is what you DON’T DO to push back. Non-compliance is not contributing anything that empowers evil. Before we take a stand of non-compliance, we need to have an inward resolve, with integrity. More than just being bothered by something, we need to understand what we would be contributing to if we were to comply. Show notes (posted every Tuesday) can be found HERE.
Good morning, RVA! It’s 65 °F, and today you should expect another warm and awesome day with temperatures returning to the mid 80s for at least the next two days. Get out there and enjoy it!Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 1,105 new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealthand 18 new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 128 new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 52, Henrico: 49, and Richmond: 27). Since this pandemic began, 1,273 people have died in the Richmond region. The seven-day average of new reported cases across the state sits at 1,098.Yesterday, the CDC released new guidance on wearing masks outside and put together this helpful page about “choosing safer activities.” I really like the framing of information on this page, putting common activities on a spectrum of risk for both vaccinated and unvaccinated folks (rather than a prescriptive DO this or DON’T DO that). The big change is that the CDC now says both vaccinated and unvaccinated people can, unmasked, “walk, run, or bike outdoors with members of your household” and “attend a small, outdoor gathering with fully vaccinated family and friends.” This is great news for tweens patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for the FDA to authorize the Pfizer vaccine for 12–15 year olds. Don’t throw away your masks, though, because you’ll still need them for crowded outdoor events or almost all indoor situations. This is life for a long while, I think! And, just as a reminder, all Virginians aged 16 and older (sorry tweens) are eligible for vaccination. Richmonders and Henricoans can now go to vax.rchd.com and schedule an appointment for themselves directly—no more pre-registration!—or call 804.205.3501 and have an appointment scheduled over the phone. We’re no longer in a place where demand for the vaccine far outstrips supply, so finding an appointment to get jabbed has never been easier.Richmond Police are reporting a shooting on the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike involving five people. Here’s the statement from the police: “At 6:31 p.m., Richmond Police responded to the 4000 block of Midlothian Turnpike for a shooting. Officers arrived on scene and located two adult females, two teenagers, and one child suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were transported to a local hospital, two with non-life threatening injuries, two victims with life-threatening injuries, and one adult female succumbed to her injuries while at the hospital.” And here’s a brief statement from Mayor Stoney: “Earlier this evening, five innocent bystanders in our city were shot, one fatally, in a single, senseless act of gun violence. This is a tragedy that no community should have to experience. My heart aches for our families. The investigation is ongoing, and we will continue to monitor the situation. If you know anything, please say something. Call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780–1000.”Chris Suarez at the Richmond Times-Dispatch has some really interesting casino updates on the thoughts and feelings of local civic associations. For example, the Richmond Highway Neighborhood Civic Association supports the proposed 8th District location, meanwhile “nearly a dozen neighborhood groups in the Fan District and North Side are opposing” the proposed 2nd District location. On my walks and rides through the Northside, I’ve definitely seen “No Casino @ Bowtie” signs (as seen above) pop up in the last week or so—even as far away as Ginter Park. It’ll be real interesting to see how much the public support/opposition plays into the final decision made by the City’s evaluation panel.Tangentially related and directly a bummer, Gregory J. Gilligan, also at the RTD, says Movieland has scrapped its plans to build a drive-in movie theatre in its parking lot this summer.Yesterday, I mentioned RPS’s #ReopeningWithLove2.0 community conversations—Northside, your conversation is up next on May 4th. In the meantime, if you’re interested in learning more about the District’s reopening plans, you should read Superintendent Kamras’s email from yesterday. He’s got a partial list of health and safety measure that families, students, and teachers should expect when school reopens this fall along with three guiding principles for reopening: 1) Extend grace and love to all students, staff, and families, 2) Protect everyone’s health and safety, including their mental health, and 3) Communicate, communicate, communicate. If you’ve been paying attention, these are basically his three guiding principles for all things, but they fit really well here, too. I especially appreciate the first! Folks reentering the world will do so at their own pace and face their own challenges, and we should all be supportive of that!City Council’s second budget amendment sessions is up on The Boring Show, and actual City Council, not the podcast version, will meet today for their third amendment work session. Based on Roberto Roldan’s tweet from earlier this week, it sounds like Council still has a lot of work to do. Speaking of, here’s Roldan’s write up of Council’s decision not to move forward with an unvetted salary increase for police and fire employees—an increase that would have been in addition to and outside of the approved Gallagher compensation study. I’m still kind of surprised Council even considered it.Now that the rad Ms. Bee’s parklet has approval from the City, you can help fund part of its construction by chipping in a couple of bucks on this GoFundMe. Even the pre-fabbed parklets popping up around town are expensive, so I imagine an entirely custom, bee-themed parklet will cost a chunk of change. Honestly, I think getting this parklet funded and built is important: Richmond needs to see, with their own eyes, what’s possible with the existing parklet program. Renderings can only do but so much convincing! This morning’s longreadEnvisioning a Federal Program to Increase Transit ServiceOperational funding for public transit is yet another example of federal COVID relief programs that we should just keep doing forever and ever. But the need to invigorate American transit service predated the pandemic. And after the pandemic recedes, a federal program to support transit service could yield immense dividends. In most American cities, the fundamental shortcoming of transit is its sheer scarcity. Buses and trains simply don’t come often enough or connect enough places to be a reliable transportation option. More abundant service promises to unlock economic opportunity for people with low incomes, improve mobility for Black and brown residents who rely on transit the most, and reduce carbon emissions. The current federal transportation policy regime, however, has done little to change the scarcity of transit service. If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.Picture of the Day
The Secret to Connecting with potential clients Virtually...Hosting a Virtual Community!! But hear me out first . . . . . before you shut me down and say:"Renee, I have NO time for anything else right now . . ."There is a STRUCTURE and a SYSTEM that most people DON'T DO.Before I can give you THAT, I need to share with you some of the biggest reasons why (from a sales perspective) having a virtual community has helped me and the women I coach grow our income and impact. Then, decide for yourself. . .Having a virtual community associated with your business is and has been for years a phenomenal way to communicate with like-minded people who care about what you love to talk about.Whether it’s a community to discuss recipes, workouts, essential oils or marketing strategies, it is a reason to start the conversation, continue the conversation and invite those most interested to something more (like to buy the membership, purchase the program or invest in coaching).3 Reasons why hosting a free community creates impact AND income:1. Hosting a free community becomes a reason to reach out.For example: “I am talking all about that with the women in my community this week, I think you’d really add to the conversation. Do you want the link to request to join the group?”2. Hosting a free community becomes a reason to continue the conversation. For example: “I am so glad you requested to join the community. It’s so interesting how you have created _______, I have so many questions! Let’s get to know each other better! I have time tomorrow at 3:45 PM EST or Friday at 9:15 AM EST, would either of those times work for you for a quick phone call?”3. Hosting a free community becomes a reason to discover what the people who are paying attention are struggling with and how you uniquely may be able to help them. For example: “Please help. As a ____ who helps _____ I am creating some training around ______, _______ and _________. But I need your help deciding which one to run first."There is something so magical when it comes to a community that is so important now. With connections happening in such DIFFERENT ways across the globe, it may be easy to mourn the ways we used to gather and connect. I miss restaurants, girls nights and meeting for lunch. However all is not lost . . . This has inspired new ways to connect that we may have never tried before. More and more people are getting creative with how to connect and yet still be physically apart. This is why virtual community connection has become more important NOW than ever before in our lives. But then a problem arises . . .What do I share? When do I share it?How often do I post? What do I post? Then it starts to feel like “one more thing” to do . . . and we hold back. This is NOT the time to hold back.Request to join my FREE community (while we are still accepting new members) and see exactly what I mean:https://www.facebook.com/groups/485712388288047/--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The "S" Word LIVE (making sales simple & fun)The Secret to Connecting with Potential Clients Virtually (Recorded LIVE)Renee Hribar has been a sales professional since 1994 in New York. In this final episode on happiness Rick identifies the things happy people never do. He shares simple, actionable steps you can take to have a happier year and life.
Pretty much all of us appreciate that Mr. Rogers related to young children in ways that were truly, genuinely, unquestionably meaningful to kids. Children’s innate radar for what is True, what is Real was never a stumbling block for Mr. Rogers… because connecting with children, with their hearts, with their spirits was as natural to him as breathing … because, truly, he “saw” each child he met, saw how to BE with each child… how to BE with them so they felt the truth of their own unique significance, of their own unique mattering … Mr. Rogers was profoundly, uncommonly respectful of young children… and one of those ways was in what he calls ‘graceful receiving.’ Because this is November, the time of year, in the U.S., when we celebrate Thanksgiving, I’m hoping that you’ll appreciate these words from the good and pure heart of Fred Rogers about the gentle art of graceful receiving … With his living example, he shares some of the highest wisdom we need to live as an example for our students’ social emotional learning … because, in alignment with the Golden Rule, who of us would not like to be received the way he intended to receive all people… whatever their age? And…. who among us doesn’t know what a challenge it is to truly receive others for exactly who they are? I’ve worked on that challenge all of my adult life … and I’m fully aware of what a major challenge it is, but when I manage to catch myself in judgment mode, and I manage to open up and just BE with a child, or a relative, or a peer WITHOUT judgement, with simple and graceful receiving … the way that shift in my mindset affects others, is hugely rewarding… yet, in all honesty… I am the one who is the greatest beneficiary… because I am the one who has freed up my mind and limiting pre-conceptions to really hear, to really see the children and others in my world. Of course, really receiving people… receiving them for who they are… exactly as they are … is not something we DO, so much as something we DON’T DO… something we step aside and let BE, and it’s not so much an emotional response, as it is a choice we make. We can choose to “receive” each child, each other… or we can choose to not receive each child, each other —to take each other for granted… or to NOT take each other for granted.” And, I hope you won’t think of this episode as a lecture… but much more as a reminder… because with life as intense as it is, with ALL of our energy required to deal with ALL that we’re dealing with… we ALL need reminders… me, most definitely. A reminder, too, about an unfortunate distortion of graceful receiving: false enthusiasm, or forced expressions of positivity and appreciation. Mistakes in the right direction, perhaps, but definitely mistakes, because kids know what’s real from what’s not real, even if they don’t consciously know that they know… THEY KNOW. And the most respectful way we can treat children is to acknowledge the fact of their innocent intelligence and their natural born wisdom by being fully present with them… so that their innate intelligence and wisdom can gain a stronghold and flourish throughout their lives --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nini-white/message

Remember the buzz when Oprah came to Australia In 2010? The Opera House, the big O on the Harbour Bridge. Sheri Salata gives the inside story of this whirlwind tour and what it was like working on the most famous show on earth. Louise Bedford – Mindpower Just as Sheri Salata has taken the reins of her life to reinvent herself, Louise looks at regrets in people’s lives According to the experts, it is the things that you DON’T DO which lead to soul-crushing regrets. What are you NOT doing in your quest for comfort, safety and control? What opportunities are you not taking up? Sheri Salata In 2010 Oprah Winfrey came to Australia. Australia went wild. The Sydney Harbour Bridge had an enormous “O” placed on it in Oprah’s honour. Australian celebrities joined Oprah at the Opera House for the filming of live shows. Hugh Jackman flew down a zip line from the top of the Opera House sails to drop onto Oprah's stage. The organiser, the planner of this whole trip was Sher Salata Oprah’s Executive Producer and Sheri shares in this interview just how much she loved Australia and our generosity. She also talks about the single-mindedness necessary to do her job at The Oprah Winfrey show and how it meant she didn’t have space for a relationship in her life. Until now… where she has made room for her feminine energy to find love as she increases the amount of her own self-love. Sheri shows that whether you are a share trader, Executive Producer or any person in the second half of their lives proves what the courage of reinvention brings and that it is never too late. Sheri’s hilarious, touching, inspirational book The Beautiful NO is on sale now. It is what I am giving all my girlfriends.
series: Romanstitle: 18 Adam & Jesusteacher: Jacob Benderdate: May 26, 2019scripture: Romans 5:12-14 Read Sermon Have you ever been given a rule, something that you were told you have to make sure you DON’T DO? naturally… of course, the natural human instinct is going to be to WANT TO DO THAT THING! And that leads some people to BREAKING THE RULE, and it leads others (people who are more like me probably) to figuring out a way that they can get as close to breaking it as they can without breaking it. you know who I am talking about… the people who are the reason we have to make additional rules because they do things that we never even think of doing! In this sermon, we explore a story about a time before the law was given. But even before there was a law, there was one specific command, and even that one thing proved to be impossible for the man who represented all of humanity.

I'm happy I was able to convince my friend Shelley to chat on this episode with a fairly unscripted agenda. I'd already interviewed her husband, Brian (in episode #12) and I wanted to wait a while to do an official podcast with her in the standard format. In this chat, we are just shooting the breeze, parenting style. She is one of my closest friends, and greatest confidants when it comes to parenting and life. Even though she didn't necessarily WANT to speak on air, and do a mini photo shoot, I love her response when I asked her with partially squeezed eyes, and her response was, "Kristen, I'll do anything for you." THAT is a true friend. PLUS, if you really want insight as to how our family operates, she's one of the best that can tell you, and she does share some of her observations about the Duke Family in this episode! We start our chat with me highlighting a few times in our 5 year friendship that I've cried on her shoulder...I'm a sensitive soul! We then discuss some of her favorite episodes of Beyond Good Intentions and her "a-ha" moments. We talk about how we aim to implement different parenting tactics such as yelling and asking rhetorical questions, and how we also need to be flexible. One of my favorite discussions is to talk about what we DON'T do as moms, that we may see others doing, and that we are ok with it. I love this discussion because I think as we are more vocal about what we DON'T DO, it gives allowance for others moms to realize we don't need to...and we CAN'T do it all the time. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this in the Instagram discussion, what do you not do and feel ok with? We close with chatting about our thoughts after attending a parenting conference recently. Listen all the way to the very end of this episode where I have a REQUEST for you. It's how all of YOU can be a part of this podcast, I want to hear YOUR voice! (Literally) A funny quote from mine and Shelley's chat happens towards the end, "Sometimes, being a parent is just super annoying." Ha!

Regain valuable time by creating a Don't Do List. Every day we spend needless time on tasks, routines and distractions just because they've become habits. We also spend valuable time doing things just to please others. Even if it doesn't benefit us at all. If you take back some of that wasted time you'd be amazed at how much more efficient your business can be. That's where a Don't Do list comes in. Let me ask you a question. Imagine this fictional scenario; you are a busy graphic designer with multiple client projects on the go. You win a great proposal and are awarded a new 40-hour project to complete within a tight deadline. Unfortunately, due to personal issues, you are only able to devote 4 hours per day to your business for the foreseeable future. What would you eliminate from your daily tasks and routines to make your life easier? What would you include on your Don't Do List? Create a Don't Do List By creating a Don't Do List for your graphic design business you are able to hold yourself accountable and take back some of your wasted time and put it to better use. In this episode of the Resourceful Designer podcast, I share 10 items that are on my own Don't Do List. Your list may look different and that's OK. Please share in the comments below what you would include on your Don't Do List. My Don't Do List For more details on each item in my list please listen to the podcast. Don't schedule client meetings in the morning. Don't look at email until I've done at least an hour of work in the morning. Don't treat emails from people I don't know as if they're urgent. Don't answer the phone or reply to text messages in the morning. Don't check my social media in the morning. Don't listen to music with words which could interfere with my creativity. Don't eat a sugary breakfast in the morning. Don't turn on the TV in the morning before work. (I'm bad at this one) Don't start my morning without already knowing what I'll be working on. Don't leave my email or social media programs open all day. Turn off Email and social media notifications. Set my mobile phone's do not disturb to end later in the morning. What's on your Don't Do List? Is there anything you would include on your Don't Do List that I don't have on mine? Let me know by leaving a comment for this episode. Questions of the Week Submit your question to be featured in a future episode of the podcast by visiting the feedback page. This week’s question comes from Norman I have a question about dealing with clients that refuse to pay, or extremely drag there feet. I Recently had a client who asked for a 3 page list of changes to her website, I believed there would be no issues as I had no issues with this client not paying in the past, however this list turned out to be an 11+ hr job which was the biggest bill I ever sent her. She received the invoice and said she mailed my check, So after hearing that, and in good faith based on our relationship thus far, I committed a cardinal web design sin, I uploaded the site changes BEFORE I actually received the check. To make a long story short, the check never arrived, 1 week later, when asked about it she told me to meet her at her studio to pick up a new check and she would cancel the missing one. I showed up but she was nowere to be found, when I finally heard from her she gave me some lame excuse that she was in a meeting running late. So I sent her a digital invoice via PayPal that she could pay. She never replied so I sent her this message: "Considering you told me that you would be able to meet me at 2 I expect the invoice to be paid by 2 or you can meet me somewhere closer in town with a check, either way if payment is not received by 2:30 today I will unfortunately have no choice but to take down the updates made to the site until payment has been received. Thank you for understanding" She immediately wrote back a very long message filled with excuses and finger pointing, also saying that she would pay the invoice within a few minutes. 2:30 comes around and still no payment, I wait another hour to give her the benefit of the doubt, until at 3:30. When I still did not receive payment I removed the updates. It is now the following day and still no payment. Did I do that right thing by following up and taking down the updates until I received payment or should I have given her more time or approached it differently? To find out what I told Norman you’ll have to listen to the podcast. Resource of the week is DepositPhotos DepositPhotos is a great stock photography site that now offers reverse image search.
