Episode 52  GREGORY HEISLER (Part 2) Legendary Portrait Photographer, Author, Educator Welcome back to part 2 of this beautiful interview with Greg, we hope you enjoyed Episode 51 where we heard how Greg got to where he is today. Greg has been so open about his thoughts and ideas and also his vision when he's photographing different subjects, which kind of makes us think about things a little deeper than just lights, camera, action.  Let's get back into the episode where we dive deeper into Gregs mind and thought processes of shooting Portraiture that reveals your subject emotionally. Don't forget the Rapid Fire not so Rapid fire round - where we always have a giggle with some very random questions for our guests. Greg also shares why his White House privileges were revoked after photographing one particular president....How stories can be mis-interpreted by viewers... We discuss more of what it takes to reach a level of success to shoot 74  Covers for Time Magazine. Greg always shares his views on the business way back when and now, how they're so different but not really that different if you take the time to look at it with a modern changing approach. Greg is iconic in the portrait world and for good reason, he's certainly someone I looked up to throughout my career. A very humble and logical man with a great mind for a practical and creative approach. We just want to thank Greg for his time and honouring us with over 3 hours of amazing conversation for this podcast, an amazing iconic Photographer and a very genuine, warm and giving person. Episode 50 RICK WENNER Award Winning Portrait & Editorial Photographer In today's Episode we're going to be taking a dive into the Editorial and advertising world of photography but more so concentrating on Portrait Photography, but not just your normal run of the mill portrait shots. How do you connect with a person to get that ultimate shot is one of the many topics of today.  Welcome to Episode 50, and today we're talking with Long Island, NY based Photographer & Director Rick Wenner, a man who's translated inspirational messages and intriguing individuals into emotionally powerful portraiture. Rick likes to invoke a little humility and wit into his shoots which has made him realise that great portraits are born when casual conversations paint the true colours of momentarily guarded strangers. In the professional realm, Rick devotes much of his artistic energy towards editorial, corporate and advertising projects and his personal work is propelled by people that inspire, and simply chronicling the characteristics that distinguish a person from average to unique. Rick appreciates some of life's little treasures like a nice hazy IPA or a good bourbon, and still has a thing for cool hot rods and low riders, well this episode is where we get down and low with the man himself. Episode 42 John Huet
One of the most acclaimed sports Photographers of our age. Welcome back to Part 2 of this fantastic episode with John Huet. Remember folks, this is a fantastic 2 part episode, so if you haven't already listened to Part 1, head on over there now to tune in to that one first, there's some great content in there. Welcome to Episode 42, first off we dive straight into the "Rapid Fire not so Rapid Fire' Round, which for some reason always seems to stump our guests for quick answers.... John is no exception but certainly has some very funny answers. As a recap, today we’re going to talk with John Huet, one of the most acclaimed Sports & Action photographers of our age whose career has spanned over 30 years.  Not one to be easily categorised, despite his reputation as one of the top sports photographers working today, John’s list of clients runs the gamut: Adidas, Bank of America, the Boston Ballet, Coca-Cola, Gillette, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Putnam Investments, Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, and the U.S. Marines, to list just a few.. He’s published several books of his Olympic photographs, as well as a book of personal work called Soul of the Game. In this episode, we continue to talk about the business, how to do it, what’s changed, and what it takes to have a 30 year long career, oh yeah and we’re also going to try and figure out what makes John’s photographic mind tick... We take a look at the kit John uses and takes with him, why he uses so many cameras and we're interested in why he's not locked down to any specific brand and why variety helps him remain creative. If having your own exhibition interests you one day, John shares with us why he does them, what the benefits are and how to go about them. John also shares a very funny story about an 'all expenses' paid Nike shoot in Russia back in the day as the country was breaking up, life as a photographer is certainly not all about the glamour. To know what I mean you have to listen to this story. It certainly has its funny moments... Remember, when shooting aeroplanes flying tow to the ground, make sure your head is well clear of the propellers going when the plane is going over you! John has some great insights and takeaways in this double episode, he shares some great info with us from his vast experience over the years. Such a lovely person to speak with and we could of kept talking for hours for sure. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did, and we look forward to seeing you in the next one.  Web:http://www.johnhuet.com Instagram: @johnhuet Twitter: redcatpro Linkedin: John Huet Don’t forget to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE & SHARE. Episode 40 John DolanEditorial, Advertising & Celebrity Wedding Photographer Welcome to Episode 40,  in this episode we’re going to talk with the lovely John Dolan,  A photographer with a career that has covered decades in the Advertising, Editorial and Fine Art world, but has also seen him in listed in the top 45 of Harper’s Bazaar top Wedding Photographer List; alongside that he’s had the pleasure of photographing many beautiful celebrity clients including Will Smith, Ben Stiller, Kate Bosworth, Bridget Moynahan, and most recently, Gwyneth Paltrow.  John is a calm and endearing man with a passion to capture those special moments in time for those to treasure forever. We tackle John to try an understand a little about his technique, his methods and his approach into what makes his work so ‘Unplanned and free’ in his style. Does a celebrity wedding carry any more pressure than a non celebrity one, well, we try to find out….. especially as both Jake and I are both frightened to death of shooting weddings. lol. It’s just not our cup of tea… John also shoots a lot of film, which we already love about him, but listen in as we dive deep into what are his favourite cameras, which is his go to film stock and why and how he has become his own walking light meter.  What’s interesting, is that John still shoots good ole film for his wedding shoots and even recently has still been whipping out the 8 x 10 for some shots - a beast of a camera to say the least…..Although he favours his Rolleiflex it’s not the only camera he carries on his shoot day, John can carry up to 6 different cameras with him to achieve a variety of looks that helps carve his unique creative style. You see ‘Film is not dead’. John has such a calming character about him and it was a real pleasure talking to him about his workflow, his techniques and about his business, he is so forthcoming with his knowledge and happy to sit down and share anything you want to ask. Make sure you listen to the whole episode as there are some great takeaways from this episode, especially if you are into film. Episode 33 Hugh Kretschmer Award Winning editorial and advertising surrealist photographer   Welcome to Episode 33, Today Jake and I are talking with Award Winning editorial and advertising photographer Hugh Kretschmer.. Hugh creates incredible  photo illustrations, ranging from commercial projects to surreal Fine Art Pieces, he takes us into a world that will visually bend your mind with his surreal narratives. His photos reveal other worlds and will take you on a magical story that will move you.  That aside, his clients include the likes of Vanity Fair, New York Times, Rolling Stone, National Geographic, Fortune, Sony, Toyota, Honda and many many more... Hugh classes himself as a Photographic Illustrator, his ideas are created from an illustrators perspective and so is his process except he uses his camera as his weapon of choice to capture all of this… Introduced to photography at a young age by his father, who was a was a photo-instrumentation engineer for MacDonnell Douglas who worked on projects from the Mercury through to the Apollo missions. Hugh’s work certainly borrows from the art world and you can certainly see a hint of Rene Magritte and perhaps a hint of Salvador Dali in his concepts, but don’t be fooled thinking this is all put together in Photoshop… Oh no… this is where Hugh’s approach and work ethic is completely the opposite as he composes nearly all his work utilising the manual building process of props/ sets and recording multiple process in camera. Hugh’s mind and work are both amazing, and we don’t boast to understand it all, but visually it’s truly outstanding and mesmerising. For those wanting to look at the Fence in a landscape image we referenced in the podcast here is the link so you can see what we’re talking about, only then will you appreciate the amount of work that goes into such. shot. We have to say Neale is one talented and very busy man, he’s a busy documentary wedding photographer, a voice over artist, and he also runs 2 podcasts. Valentines Day Special with just Wayne Johns and Jake Hicks talking about everything analogue. Is film really dead? Join Wayne and Jake as They discuss what role film and older analogue cameras has in todays photography market. Why should you pick up an old film camera? What are the benefits of going medium format over 35mm? Which medium format film camera should you jump in with? We also get a little technical on the process involved of actually shooting film. What do we need to be aware of when shooting film over digital. Elements many modern photographers take for granted like adjusting the ISO, auto focus, White balance, and of course actually SEEING the image afterwards. How do we get some digital, sharable files from our film shots. All of theses elements are major considerations in film, but are there actually any benefits to be had from shooting film beyond the simple ‘challenge’ itself? We take a step back from digital ‘perfection’ for a moment and embrace the ‘happy accidents’ that shooting with film can offer, and with it, the inevitable creativity that comes with that. If you’re feeling like your creatively and inspiration is waning, maybe it’s time to be inspired by film once again. We also take a moment at the end to answer any listener questions with regards to film, but if you have any other questions about film and analogue that weren’t covered in this episode, we’d love to hear them. In this episode of Podlamania your hosts Wayne Johns & Jake Hicks Talk to Indiana based Wedding & Portrait Photographer Bradley Michael who tries to explain to us how he shoots and edits his world of colour in Black & White due to being almost completely colour blind. We try and get our heads around how Brad, translates how he sees colour before he presses that shutter button but then even more confusing for us is how he then applies that in his retouching stages, and gets his colours looking so nice.. As people that have always seen colour its really hard to get your head around not seeing it to understand where brads coming from. Its certainly given him some challenges and he finds ways around them. It left us scratching our heads a little but we left holding the upmost respect for Brad to be able shoot and use colour in the beautiful the way that he does, what a man with an amazing set of skills and talent. www.bradleymichaelcreative.com instagram.com/bradleymichaelcreative https://www.facebook.com/Bradley-Michael-Creative-2011625995552823/    Keep an ear out for Episode 007 - Where we speak to Female Beauty, Commercial, Editorial Photographer iulia David If you want to help support us produce and record even more great interviews and content for your ears, and allow us to physically be in front os some of these worlds great talents, you can help make this happen by donating on our Patreon page.   https://www.patreon.com/Podlamania
