Ordinarily Sarah by Sarah Elizabeth RoseStrange incantations, death threats, curses, a towering dragon, a hidden garden located in a sea of burnt ashes, soul-grabbing owls with talons razor sharp, a secret world of dark-winged creatures tearing at the sky, and a screeching Prince ordering the dark-winged creatures to kill and destroy . . .This is the strange new world that ordinary Sarah, wife and mother, homemaker, school teacher, and part time children's pastor, finds herself in on a cold winter day after her young adult daughter called to say that she could no longer be a part of Sarah's life—ever. How will Sarah exist in her new world? Welcome to Sense of Self, a podcast where we explore the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and what happens when those stories stop working. In this episode, I had the privilege of chatting with Akemi Look, a multi-talented actor, producer, and writer based in Los Angeles. Akemi's journey is one of resilience, healing, and self-discovery.We delved into Akemi's childhood, where she shared her experiences of growing up half-Japanese, half-Chinese in Michigan. She opened up about the challenges she faced, including racial taunts and the struggle to assimilate in a predominantly white community. At the age of 10, Akemi set her sights on becoming a rhythmic gymnast, driven by a deep desire to prove her worth and be accepted as "American enough." She recounted the grueling training regimen, the sacrifices she made, and the pressure she felt to succeed. Akemi's dedication to her sport led her to represent the United States in international competitions, but it came at a cost. Our conversation took a poignant turn as Akemi shared about a life-altering accident that shattered her face and forced her to confront deep-seated trauma. This event became a turning point in her healing journey, prompting her to slow down, reflect, and prioritize her well-being. Akemi's vulnerability in discussing her struggles with mental health, addiction, and trauma highlighted the importance of self-care and seeking help.We also explored Akemi's relationship with her family, particularly her journey towards forgiveness and understanding with her parents. The role of friends, her husband, and her own inner strength in supporting her through difficult times was a testament to the power of community and resilience. As we wrapped up our conversation, Akemi reflected on her growth and transformation, describing herself as a bright, hopeful person ready to shine her light. Her journey from self-doubt to self-acceptance is an inspiring reminder of the healing power of self-discovery.Thank you for listening to Akemi's story, and for being a part of our community. If you are in need of assistance, please access the resources in our show notes. Today, Jan is joined by Elizabeth Rose, who shares her story of neglect and childhood sexual abuse that began early on in her life. She talks about the normalization of abuse in her home and the grooming and manipulation she experienced. Being trafficked as a teenager, abandoned by her mother, and living in multiple foster care homes as an adolescent, Elizabeth Rose has a unique perspective on the systemic injustices that are faced by children who are neglected, abused and exploited. In this conversation, Jan and Elizabeth Rose discuss the importance of education, advocacy, trauma-informed care, and support for survivors of human trafficking. They highlight the need for community belief and understanding, as well as the role of legislation in preventing and addressing trafficking. They also discuss the notion that many people believe human trafficking only occurs far away, but in reality, it's happening right here in North America, often perpetrated by someone familiar to us. Lastly, they discuss the systemic failures in the support systems for survivors and the need for resources as well as education in the community. The conversation ends with a message of hope and resilience for all survivors and Elizabeth Rose shares about how being an advocate for others has helped her in her healing journey.Elizabeth Rose would like to highlight:The Joy Smith FoundationLuma & BloomIf you are someone you know is experiencing emotional distress or suicidal ideation, please access the resources below:National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Call/Text 988National Sexual Assault Hotline (RAINN) : 1-800-656-HOPE (4673)National Alliance for Mental Illness: 1-800-950-6264Subscribe / Support / Contact:

Antonoise - Jackname Trouble Brennen Bryarly, performing under the ominous moniker of option4, is more house than tech and more deep than disco. Though he calls Denver his home, option4's music is deeply rooted in his Windy City past and the sounds of the vibrant underground house scene that places Chicago on everyone's radar. Though he only started focusing on original music in 2013, option4 has quickly gained a reputation for creating sonically textured house music that extends far beyond the fleeting trends of the electronic dance world. While most producers transition into songwriting from DJing or rely heavily on samples to string together a beat, option4 dives head first into creating his own music from scratch. In his first year in the studio, option4 released two singles, ‘Do Work' - a hard-hitting tech house track with a deep and rhythmic bassline matched with equally impressive synths, and ‘All The Girls', which cleverly splices vocals from N.E.R.D.'s ‘Everyone Nose' while adding a pulsating bass groove and old school house synths creating a dance floor-ready atmosphere. A year on, option4 has accelerated on to playing live shows across the Midwest, Canada and Los Angeles on headline bills and supports for huge acts such as STS9, Moon Boots, Mighty Mouse and Lane 8. Amid turning out eclectic remixes for Elizabeth Rose, Great Good Fine Ok and Indian Summer amongst more, option4 consistently released exceptional original singles like ‘Love like No Other' and ‘Deep Diamonds' to collectively garner over 1.1 million streams on Soundcloud in 2014. A master on the decks, option4 also traded mixes for high-profile taste makers in fashion and music including Thump, Discobelle, Perrier and international outfitters Frank & Oak. With more original material on the way and support from the likes of Justin Jay, Bit Funk and more, 2015 will see option4 turn his focus on original tunes with short breaks out of the studio for live shows throughout the U.S and beyond to add to his already impressive list of club and festival line-ups. Take notice -- option4 is well on his way to soaring far beyond the Mile High City. Twitter - @optionfore Soundcloud - Option 4 Facebook - Option 4 Instagram - @optionfour
