In 2001 he was chosen for the State Department Jazz Ambassador Program and toured South America, Central America and Jamaica. In 2002 he joined the Airmen of Note, USAF Band, Washington, D.C. Tedd Baker's all-original 2006 debut CD “Mugshots” received rave reviews from JazzTimes, and All About Jazz. Tedd's latest release "Duos Volume 1" is a reverent nod to the classic duo configuration, and features tenor/soprano saxophone paired in various duo settings with piano, bass, drums, guitar, and voice. Brooklyn based trumpeter Satish Robertson is a musician who wears many hats. His horn soars in a variety of musical settings from jazz to gospel, neo-soul, hip-hop, funk, right down to the blues. His credits include live performances and/or recordings with heavy hitters across several genres such as James Carter, Marc Cary, Spirit of Life Ensemble, Deborah Davis, Ace Clark, Chazmere, Talib Kweli, The NYC Ska Orchestra, Bobby Kyle & the Administers, and Archie Bell of the Drells. He is also the leader of numerous exciting jazz groups of his own. Growing up in Jersey City, NJ, Satish developed a deep love of music early on thanks to his grandmother's extensive record collection. He began his musical studies on piano as a child, but after falling under the spell of Miles Davis, he gravitated towards trumpet at the age of 20. Trumpeters Clifford Brown, Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Booker Little, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, and Roy Hargrove would also become strong influences. Partly self taught, but also mentored by master trumpeters such as Rob Henke, Vinnie Cutro, Jeremy Pelt, Eddie Henderson, Duane Eubanks, and the late Ted Curson, Satish has developed a commanding, penetrating, and soulful voice on his horn. Satish is also a prolific composer whose writing often exhibits a striking cinematic quality. And with his new release 80's JOINT: THE EP, Satish shows yet another side of his vast artistry, fusing jazz with the synth heavy sounds of 1980's pop, rock, funk, R&B, and techno - composing, arranging, producing, and playing nearly all of the instruments on the record himself.

Originally from Chicago, trumpeter, educator and composer Elliot Bild got his undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University and his Masters Degree from Temple University where he studied with John Swana, Terell Stafford and Dick Oatts. Recently, he has performed with the great Philadelphia Bassist Mike Boone at Smalls Jazz Club in NYC as well as the 2019 Philadelphia Center City Jazz Festival, as part of his new working Quintet. He has also performed with Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big Band, Don Braden, John Swana, Duane Eubanks, Tim Warfield, Randy Brecker, Dave Ballou, Avery Sharpe, Mike DiRubbo, Zaccai and Luques Curtis, Behn Gillece, and Pablo Batista. Elliot is currently one of the most in demand freelance trumpeters in the Philadelphia area, performing at such venues as Chris's Jazz Cafe, South Jazz Kitchen, Smalls Jazz Club, Time, The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, Litchfield Jazz Festival among others. Elliot just finished recording his debut live record, with his band 'The Zone', which will be out in 2020.

Star trumpeter Duane Eubanks discusses his career, his musical influences, the latest album "Things of That Particular Nature" and talks about what it means to be a musician in 2015 and the importance of the business side of a music career.

In this episode we get to speak with vibraphonist Warren Wolf as he travels the country. Warren is a multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore, MD. From the young age of three years old, Warren has been trained on the Vibraphone/Marimba, Drums, and Piano. Under the guidance of his father Warren Wolf Sr., Warren has a deep background in all genres of music. Beginning with classical music, Warren had studied classical composers from Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Paganini, Brahms, Vivaldi and Shostakovich. Warren also studied ragtime music learning music from the songbooks of Scott Joplin, Harry Brewer and Geroge Hamilton Green. In Jazz, Warren has studied artist and composers from Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Freddie Hubbard, Clifford Brown, Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, Bobby Hutcherson, Cal Tjader, Return to Forever, Weather Report, Wynton Marsalis and many others. After graduating from Berklee in May of 2001, Warren became an active musician on the Boston local scene. Warren was hired in September of 2003 to become an instructor in the percussion department at Berklee College of Music. Warren taught private lessons on the Vibraphone and Drums, as well as teach a beginners keyboard class for entering freshman drumset majors. Bill McHenry has played with some of the biggest names in jazz and he and his contemporaries are changing the face of modern music. We catch up with Bill this week to talk about how he got started, playing with John McNeil and Paul Motian, and some of the things he has done to develop one of the most recognizable sounds on the saxophone today. If you don't know Bill's work, he lives in New York, Barcelona, and Maine.  He has made 7 recordings as a leader,  and is known for his work with Andrew Cyrille, Paul Motian, Eric Revis, Guillermo Klein, Andrew D’Angelo, Reid Anderson, Orrin Evans, John McNeil, Ben Waltzer, Rebecca Martin, Duane Eubanks, Jamie Saft, and Ethan Iverson.   I really enjoyed our conversation, Bill is a generous, funny, and deep guy who has many good things to say. Dickerson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and raised in Camden, New Jersey.  He is a 2002 graduate and 4thof his class in Camden High School.  He has achieved high academic accomplishments, especially, in math, science and music education.  He was a member of the National Honor Society, with perfect attendance, and has been the president of his class since his freshman year.  Nasir has also earned many academic scholarships and awards, such as the Alexander Oaks Award, which was given to the number one senior student who has won the respect and approval of the administration, faculty, staff and student body, for academic scholarship, character, personality and athletic interest. Nasir was accepted into the University of the Arts, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Music Performance in May of 2006.  May of 2007 Nasir earned and received his Master Degree in MUSIC EDUCATION at the UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS, with high academic honors.Presently, Nasir is employed at the Camden Public Schools (Creative Arts Morgan Village Academy) in Camden, New Jersey as a Music Teacher.  He earned the award of the Best Teacher of the Year in 2010.  In 2002 he formed his own jazz group called Nasir Dickerson and the Renaissance Messengers.  Today Nasir produced two wonderful CD’s (albums) called the Journey to the Fatherland and The Revealer.  Nasir performed and/or actively performs for many legendary greats such as the Philadelphia Legends of Jazz Orchestra (Leon Mitchell), Stylistics, Intruders and Urban Guerilla Orchestra.  He also open for legendary jazz greats, such as Dr. Donald Byrd, Robert “Bootsie” Barnes, Wallace Roney, Jimmy Heath, Cyrus Chestnut Trio, Duane Eubanks, Jymie Merritt, Mickey Roker, Stanley Wilson and Sid Simmons.  Also, today Nasir performs for wedding bands called the CTO World Entertainment Group (Park Avenue), Bounce - The New Evolution, and The Tony Grandberry Project in the Philadelphia area.Nasir has been playing and studying musical instruments, such as the tuba, tenor, baritone, alto and soprano saxophones since the second grade.  He was inspired and taught by many great professors and teachers, such as Mr. Leon Mitchell, Mr. Charles Bowen Sr., Mr. Charles Elliott, Mr. Ronald Kerber, Mr. Tony Salicondro, Mr. Chris Farr, Mr. Danny Muller, Mr. Ben Schachter, Mr. Dennis Wasko, Mr. Tony Miceli, Mr. John Swanna, Ms. Trudy Pitts, Lovett Hines and his older brother Mr. Jamal Dickerson.  Nasir was also part of a musical team winning an Emmy Award on Saturday, September 24, 2011.Nasir is also a World Champion 5th Degree Master Black Belt in Karateand a member of a Discipline Military Style Drill Team called the World Champion UPK Pasha Generals.  Nasir is also a long standing and key member of the Universal African Dance & Drum Ensemble, which is famous for its electrifying drummers, sensational dancers, exciting masquerade and acrobatic show performing all over America also in Africa and the Caribbean. This week's Contrabass Conversations podcast features the first part of our interview with double bassist Ranaan Meyer. John Grillo (a frequent guest and collaborator on the podcast) and I co-interviewed Ranaan, who is the bassist for the band Time for Three and has had a very interesting and multi-faceted career. In addition to hearing a few musical excerpts from Time for Three, this episode features music from German double bassist Guy Tuneh, Pittsburgh-based singer/songwriter Brad Yoder, Los Lonely Boys, and The Latin Soul Syndicate. Enjoy! Ranaan Meyer bio: Ranaan Meyer, double bassist and composer, began his musical studies at the piano at age 4; at age 11, he took up the double bass (once he was big enough to hold it). He attended the Manhattan School of Music and graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in 2003. Beyond regular appearances with orchestras such as the Minnesota Symphony, Baltimore Symphony and The Philadelphia Orchestra, Mr. Meyer is also increasingly in demand as a composer, creating unique new works for his trio Time for Three as well as for solo bass and other ensembles. Most recently Mr. Meyer completed a commission, “My Zayda? (for Violin, Piano and Double Bass) for the Kingston Chamber Music Festival in Rhode Island. Other recently completed commissions include a solo double bass piece for the Network for New Music, a double bass and harp duet as well as a set of Time for Three pieces for Astral Artistic Services and a Time for Three composition for the City of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Symphony, “Of time and three rivers?. All commissions have been expedited through the American Composer’s forum. Mr. Meyer, also an accomplished jazz musician, has performed with Jane Monheight, Victor Lewis, Jason Moran, Mark O’Connor, Ari Hoenig, Duane Eubanks, Mickey Roker and many more. Ranaan, at age 19 produced, directed and performed in the very first Washington Township Jazz Festival which was also broadcasted live on Philadelphia’s WRTI. Mr. Meyer, an avid teacher, has held adjunct Double Bass Professorships at both Princeton University and the University of Delaware. He has spent several Summers teaching alongside Hal Robinson (Principal Bass of The Philadelphia Orchestra) at the Strings International Music Festival in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He has also taught at the Intermountain Suzuki Camp in Sandy, Utah and Mark O’Connor’s String Camp in San Diego, California.
