A Vol dOiseau heisst ihr Debut-Album. Welcome back to the Burning Ambulance Podcast! To find out about upcoming episodes, as well as all things Burning Ambulance, sign up for our free weekly newsletter. It's been a long time since I've done one of these. In fact, the last episode was released in December of 2022. I talked then to film critic Walter Chaw about his book on the work of director Walter Hill. Since then, a lot's been going on. Most notably, I wrote a book of my own, In The Brewing Luminous: The Life And Music Of Cecil Taylor, which will be released this year. It's the first full-length biography and critical analysis of Taylor, who is not only a hugely important jazz musician – along with Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler and others, he was one of the pioneers of free jazz and really pushed the music forward in undeniable ways – but is also, I believe and argue in the book, a brilliant and under-recognized American composer whose work spans a much broader range than many people realize.Ethan Iverson is also a really interesting American composer. You could be reductive about it and call him a synthesist of old and new pop and jazz styles, but he has a strong and recognizable voice that becomes easy to hear the more of his music you listen to. There are chords and types of melodies that he favors that set him apart from his peers, and he's got a real attraction to big hooks, which manifested in the Bad Plus's work in a number of ways and shows up in his solo work too. The Bad Plus developed a reputation for piano trio covers of pop songs that people often seemed to think were ironic, but were in fact performed from a perspective of real love for compositional form. A great tune is a great tune. And it's worth remembering that they also recorded Igor Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, which is an avant-garde landmark but also has some really kick-ass and highly memorable melodies. After all, it was originally written for dancers.Ethan's new album, Technically Acceptable, is his second record for Blue Note and he's doing some things on it that he's never done before. First of all, he's playing with two different rhythm sections that are made up of musicians more or less his own age, even younger than himself. Until now, he's tended to record with older players, legends like Jack DeJohnette, Albert "Tootie" Heath, Billy Hart, Paul Motian, Ron Carter, etc. This is his first time post-Bad Plus making an album entirely with musicians of his own generation. Also, it includes a solo piano sonata – three movements, fifteen minutes, a through composed classical piece that still manages to fit under the umbrella of jazz in a George Gershwin meets Fats Waller kind of way. This album is a real showcase for him as a composer.Ethan and I talk about Cecil Taylor in the interview you're about to hear. We also talk about his work and how it's evolved over the years, the economics of surviving as a jazz musician in the 21st century, and we talk about other piano players of his generation like Jason Moran, Aaron Diehl, Aaron Parks, Jeb Patton, and Sullivan Fortner. We talk about diving into the music's history, and about how there's as much to learn and draw from in the music of the 1920s and 1930s as in the music of the 1960s and afterward, and about the increasing movement toward composition in current jazz. This is his second time on the podcast – a couple of years ago, I interviewed him alongside Mark Turner, because they'd made a duo album together. But this time it's a one on one conversation, and I hope you'll find it as interesting as I did.

In August, West Virginia University announced that it would be dissolving its Department of World Languages, Literature and Linguistics. And a couple months after that, my school Middlebury College, chose to eliminate a faculty position in its creative writing department. As someone studying English Literature, and who cares deeply about the future of humanities education, I was curious to talk to someone who has been thinking about what the study of the humanities looks like in today's world. Merve Emre is the Shapiro-Silverberg University Professor of Creative Writing and Criticism at Wesleyan University and a contributing writer at The New Yorker. She was also a judge for The 2022 International Booker Prize. I've read her essays on various literary topics at The New Yorker, and other publications and it's obvious that her criticism strives to innovate literary study for a changing world. I've been talking a lot about criticism on this show this year. I spoke to Christian Lorentzen over the summer about the future of literary criticism, an art that's been required to reinvent and revitalize itself over the past few years. And my conversations with Jerome Lowenthal and Ethan Iverson focused on how classical music and jazz are received. I think studying the way we approach and talk about art and culture is crucial to the function of the humanities and this conversation gets to the heart of that.  Merve and I start by talking about the school and the trends that literature departments are seeing, but then we progress to a larger discussion about access to the humanities. Merve is a strong advocate for treating aesthetic experience as a social good, and this takes us to the end of our conversation where we try to articulate how the academy and public media, and social media can simultaneously further the reach and scope of humanities education and dissemination in their own ways. This was another work of audio criticism. Regardless of whether you're interested in literature or culture, the topics we discussed are ubiquitous in today's society, and if there's one throughline in all the episodes of Cultural Mixtapes, it's the importance of art in our world. As part of this mini series on the past and future of the music industry, I wanted to speak to another person who's been a force in the industry for years. I came across an article in The Nation that was called The End of the Music Business. This piece presented the history of a century in recorded music that began with pre-war 78-rpm gramophone records, and ended with the onset of streaming websites. The thesis of the piece was that the most notable development in these hundred years was the LP, which marked the apex of commercial music making and album sales. The piece was written by Jazz Pianist Ethan Iverson. Ethan has been in the industry for over 20 years, and is now a mainstay of jazz clubs in New York and all over the country.  He was a founding member of the avant-garde jazz trio The Bad Plus in the year 2000 and he stayed with the group for 17 years. In addition to being a jazz pianist, Ethan also has written prolifically about music, and culture for years on his blog DO THE MATH, and now his Substack TRANSITIONAL TECHNOLOGY.  Ethan and I began with this piece in The Nation. And he talked through his experience in the music industry, and his predictions for where things may go. But from there we started exploring his intricate career in Jazz. Ethan has traversed through the genre, from The Bad Plus, which served as a bridge between contemporary jazz and popular music, to his current compositions, such as a piano sonata, which strive to place Jazz in conversation with classical music. As you know, I'm fascinated by work that asks complicated questions about the genre it originates from. So this last idea is where we ended our conversation. and as someone who's studied both styles and performed in both traditions, Ethan may be an apt person to think about the future of American music. This was a wonderful conversation that covered over a hundred years of American music, had a lovely Tony Bennett cameo, and forced me to think about pushing the boundaries and changing the terms we use to define genres of music. This week, we welcome bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Dave King to The JAZZIZ Podcast. Anderson and King are two of the founding members of The Bad Plus, one of the defining bands of 21st-century jazz. After over a decade as an acclaimed piano trio, with Ethan Iverson first and Orrin Evans later, Anderson and King have reinvented The Bad Plus as a dynamic quartet with guitarist Ben Monder and saxophonist Chris Speed. This is the lineup featured on their new, self-titled album, which is due out on September 30 via Edition Records. Despite the major change in the lineup, the band's objective of challenging conventions and pushing their unique approach to jazz in boundary-breaking new directions remains unaltered. Their music, as well as this podcast conversation, testifies to their passion, drive and intent. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jazziz/support

It's Melanie Charles revisioning her in a totally surreal and cool duet. The Heath Brothers are jazz legends—2002 NEA Jazz master Percy was a bassist, 2003 NEA Jazz Master Jimmy was saxophonist, composer, and arranger and now their youngest brother Albert, known to all as Tootie, a virtuosic percussionist, has now joined them as a 2021 NEA Jazz Master.  Tootie Heath's talent was apparent a young age—he was still in high school when he performed with Thelonious Monk. In fact, the list of musicians who have sought him out reads like a who's who in jazz: John Coltrane, Dexter Gordan, Yusef Lateef, Art Farmer, Anthony Braxton, Ethan Iverson. The list goes on and on; after all, Heath has performed on more than 100 recordings. But note the range of styles of these musicians. Heath is known for his extraordinary versatility as a drummer—eager to play various styles of jazz as well as immerse himself in the music and rhythms of other cultures. Yet, there's never any mistaking Heath's own distinctive musical voice. And it was a voice that was nurtured from an early age at his home in Philadelphia where he grew up surrounded by music. In this podcast, Tootie Heath talks about his musical roots, his talented brothers, some of the celebrated musicians he's performed with, and his commitment to embracing different musical styles. He's funny, irreverent, and a born story-teller with great stories to tell.
