Howard Fishman is a regular contributor to The New Yorker and The New York Times, where he has published essays on music, film, theater, literature, travel, and culture. His bylines have also appeared in the The Boston Glove, Rolling Stone, The Telegraph, Vanity Fair, The Washington Post, Artforum, San Francisco Chronicle, Mojo, The Village Voice, Jazziz, and Salmagundi. His play, A Star Has Burnt My Eye, was a New York Times “Critics Pick.” As a performing songwriter and bandleader, Fishman has toured internationally as a headlining artist for over two decades. He has released eleven albums to date, and is the producer of the album Connie's Piano Songs: The Art Songs of Elizabeth “Connie” Converse. His book, To Anyone Who Ever Asks: The Life, Music, and Mystery of Connie Converse, was shortlisted for the Plutarch Award for Best Biography of 2023. To Anyone Who Ever Asks The mysterious true story of Connie Converse—a mid-century New York City songwriter, singer, and composer whose haunting music never found broad recognition—and one writer's quest to understand her life. This is the mesmerizing story of an enigmatic life. When musician and New Yorker contributor Howard Fishman first heard Connie Converse's voice on a recording, he was convinced she could not be real. Her recordings were too good not to know, and too out of place for the 1950s to make sense—a singer who seemed to bridge the gap between traditional Americana (country, blues, folk, jazz, and gospel), the Great American Songbook, and the singer-songwriter movement that exploded a decade later with Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. And then there was the bizarre legend about Connie Converse that had become the prevailing narrative of her life: that in 1974, at the age of fifty, she simply drove off one day and was never heard from again. Could this have been true? Who was Connie Converse, really? Connie Converse, Schenectady, NY, 1955 Supported by a dozen years of research, travel to everywhere she lived, and hundreds of extensive interviews, Fishman approaches Converse's story as both a fan and a journalist, and expertly weaves a narrative of her life and music, and of how it has come to speak to him as both an artist and a person. Ultimately, he places her in the canon as a significant outsider artist, a missing link between a now old-fashioned kind of American music and the reflective, complex, arresting music that transformed the 1960s and music forever. But this is also a story of deeply secretive New England traditions, of a woman who fiercely strove for independence and success when the odds were against her; a story that includes suicide, mental illness, statistics, siblings, oil paintings, acoustic guitars, cross-country road trips, 1950s Greenwich Village, an America marching into the Cold War, questions about sexuality, and visionary, forward thinking about race, class, and conflict. It's a story and subject that is by turn hopeful, inspiring, melancholy, and chilling. Credits for Talkin' Like You and Birthday song excerpt: The Musick Group. Jazziz magazine writes that Nelson Rangell is “an artist of depth, a master of song, and an improviser non pareil.” The Times of London notes “his extraordinary facility on a range of instruments” and Rangell's “considerable crowd-pleasing power.” Saxophone Journal writes, “He commands the alto saxophone with such authority there can be no denying that Rangell is a true artist.” Flute Talk Magazine states, “Nelson Rangell creates the impression that anything is possible when improvising.” Such praise is a confirmation of what contemporary jazz fans have known since the Denver-based saxophonist emerged in the late 80s: that Rangell is one of the most exciting and diverse performers in the genre, equally adept at soprano, alto, and tenor saxophone, as well as being a genuine virtuoso on flute and piccolo. Notes: Judi is wishing for sunshine, then some rain; moonlight and starlight -- for herself, and for all of us... and when we get to sing this song of hers, we get to wish it for ourselves -- and each other. Every little wish for me and for we.... such a good feeling to remember our social connection, how natural it feels as humans to care for each other. I love the way each part you can sing in this song builds to a natural ending note... and those notes, stacked on each other, create a sweet, surprising chord. I also find the silence intriguing -- lots of space in these layers; chances to listen to the other voices. It's a little bit like remembering there are other people in the room with their own lives and stories and sorrows and delights, and there's space for them, too.... and maybe, combined, we're even more intriguing and colorful than alone? I particularly appreciate this song as I tentatively explore gathering more frequently with real, live people now... and I am surprised by the intensity of the experience. Disclosure: Judi has been my mentor and teacher and friend since 2015.... I asked her nicely (pleaded) to create a pocket song for the podcast. So I think this counts as a bespoke song?! My guest today is Scott Yanow—one of the best known and most prolific jazz reviewers.Writing about jazz is special, because of the dynamic and fluid nature of the music. There is a basic melody in jazz…but only to begin with. The musicians, in their solos, interpret that melody and its underlying harmonic structure. And always, and without exception, that interpretation is different every time a jazz soloist plays. Here's an analogy for jazz beginners.Classical music, for instance, is like a play. The lines are written for the actors, who must use their skill to bring out the drama in the lines. But it's always the same lines, the same words.Jazz is like scintillating conversation. You don't say the same thing twice—for the sake of your friends I hope you don't. And how interesting you are depends on how much you know, and how well you say it.So, you see what I mean when I say that writing jazz reviews merits its own skill.Speaking of skill, Scott Yanow has authored 12 books, written over 20,000 recording reviews and over 900 liner notes. (Liner notes are those descriptive passages that accompany an album.)He has also written artist biographies and press releases for record labels, public relations firms and individual artists. And most easily accessible, he has written hundreds of summaries for jazzonthetube.com.Scott doesn't tire easily. And simply listening to him describe a typical day is enough to make most of us pine for a vacation. As I said earlier, it's all about how much you know and how well you say it. Scott Yanow knows a lot and says it in an unpretentious, direct and honest writing style. And now he joins us from his home near Los Angeles.ABOUT SCOTT YANOWScott Yanow was born in New York and grew up near Los Angeles. He became the jazz editor for Record Review, a now-legendary music magazine. Yanow has written for Jazz Times, Cadence, Coda, The Mississippi Rag, Jazz Forum, Jazz News, The Jazz Report, Planet Jazz, Jazz Now, Jazz Improv and other significant jazz magazines. He contributors to seven magazines: Downbeat, Jazziz, the NYC Jazz Record, the Los Angeles Jazz Scene, Jazz Artistry Now, the Jazz Rag and Syncopated Times. Yanow has written 12 books on jazz: The Jazz Singers, The Great Jazz Guitarists, Jazz On Film  Duke Ellington, Swing, Bebop, Afro-Cuban Jazz, Classic Jazz, Trumpet Kings, Jazz: A Regional Exploration,  the massive Jazz On Record 1917-76 and most recently Jazz Through The Eyes Of A Jazz Journalist (My Jazz Memoirs).Jazz Through The Eyes Of A Jazz Journalist: https://amzn.to/3PLnx5SWHAT'S THAT WORD?! - JAZZCo-host Pranati "Pea" Madhav joins Ramjee Chandran in the segment "What's That Word?", where they discuss the origins of "jazz" and tell jazz jokes.WANT TO BE ON THE SHOW?Reach us by mail: theliterarycity@explocity.com or simply, tlc@explocity.com.
