Caleb Wheeler Curtis designs playgrounds for his band members when he composes, creating opportunities for improvisation within a structured framework. It's all about space to freely express oneself. This Ann Arbor, Michigan native who now lives in Brooklyn, New York City, has recently released to critical acclaim his fifth album, Heatmap. Caleb and I spent some time talking about this recording and his growth as a musician. Caleb is the consummate collaborator with a discography that details a journey full of an adventure in music. Beginning with Walking Distance: Neighborhood in 2015, Caleb's relationships weaved a path rich with partnerships and mentors who provided a foundation for him, that guided him in his writings and arrangements. He is the first one to tell you that getting to the place where he considered himself to be a professional musician was not easy. Caleb firmly believes it requires commitment to your art. Caleb is fortunate to have Imani Records producer and owner and Grammy nominee Orrin Evans as a mentor, giving him opportunities to stretch as a musician and guidance as a composer and bandleader. Heatmap, produced by Orrin Evans, is a product of such collaborations and mentorships. Caleb played in Evans' band, Captain Black Big Band, performing on his two Grammy nominated recordings. He and Orrin Evans developed a bond that Caleb identifies as critical to his growth as a musician and composer. Caleb's compositions reflect an approach that provides space for each musician to expand and bring to the experience their own artistry and talent thus giving his compositions a fresh breath for improvising. His approach is strong without being forced; one critic acknowledges. And while his musical spirit has an open willingness for exploration, his musical upbringing with strong mentorship gives it an inherent wisdom. Caleb Wheeler Curtis was a MacDowell Fellow, an artist's residency program in rural Peterborough, New Hampshire. There, Caleb was given his own space and time to compose, play the piano uninterrupted by the daily forces of urban life. The end-product, 10 originals on which Caleb plays on alto saxophone except for one track on soprano. Heatmap features, of course Curtis on saxophone, Orrin Evans on piano, Eric Revis on bass and Gerald Cleaver on the drums. Caleb and his band can be heard on two tracks played in their entirety on Strictly Jazz Sounds. I asked him to explain his composition style. His credits as a collaborator, composer and saxophonist (mostly alto) led to recordings from Freebird featuring Jason Moran in 2018. Curtis also teamed up to record Curtis+Garabedian+Sperrazza: New York in 2018 with Vinnie Sperrazza and Noah Garabedian; and Curtis/Carter/Ferber: Doing Nothing Is Hard Business, a project that included Rahsaan Carter and Mark Ferber in 2020. Curtis's discography also includes playing on two Grammy-nominated recordings with the Orrin Evans-led group the Captain Black Big Band: Presence, released in 2018 and The Intangible Between, dropped in 2020. Curtis released two albums for the Orrin Evans-owned record label Imani, Brothers in 2018 and Ain't No Storm in 2021. It doesn't stop there. In 2021 Curtis collaborated to release two recordings, No One Is Anyone, with Noah Garabedian, Vinnie Sperrazza and Orrin Evans and Substrate with Swiss pianist Laurent Nicoud. Caleb earned a music degree from Michigan State University, and later a masters in music from William Paterson University. Since then, he has focused on the New York jazz scene from Brooklyn.
A native of eastern Pennsylvania, JD Walter's past, present, and future has always embodied music. From church Boy choirs at the age of six to the American Boy choir school in Princeton to the University of North Texas on a vocal jazz scholarship, Walter has become a pioneer of improvisation and electronic innovations in the world of jazz. His recording career spans 20 years and his purist progressive approach to jazz music has been recognized worldwide. After extended studies in Amsterdam with Jazz vocal Icon, Deborah Brown, Walter returned to the U.S. and embedded himself in the New York Jazz scene. It was in New York, surrounded by visionaries of jazz, where he began to organically develop his liberated, vibrant style that turned him from straight-ahead to progressive jazz singing. The latest album, released on February 7, 2020, testifies to his personal progression as an evolving artisan and provides an intimate, inventive collection of standards and originals. “Dressed in a Song,” produced by Walter and Grammy-winning producer and A&R executive Al Pryor, features piano and vocal duets and trios with veterans and up-and-comers alike, including Jim Ridl, Orrin Evans, Jean-Michel Pilc, Marc Cary, Taylor Eigsti, Julius Rodriguez, Ben Wolfe, Obed Calvaire, and Becca Stevens. Over the decades, Walter has performed as a featured artist at numerous American jazz clubs and festivals in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Central America as well as over 80 tours in Russia. He remains a regular in the New York music scene, and has headlined at Dizzy's Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, The Blue Note, and The Jazz Gallery, among other venues. He has shared the stage with legendary artists, ranging from Dave Liebman, Billy Hart, Tom Harrell, Eddie Gomez, Bob Dorough, Nicholas Payton, Ben Monder, Sean Jones, Jean-Michel Pilc, Bill Evans, Mark Murphy, Greg Hutchinson, Ari Hoenig, Randy Brecker, Tim Warfield, Jim Ridl, Orrin Evans, Seamus Blake, Igor Butman, Nasheet Waits, Craig Handy, Boris Kozlov, Robin Eubanks, Eric Revis, Billy Drummond, Christian McBride, Adam Nussbaum. Guitarist and vocalist Doug Wamble's latest album is called Blues In The Present Tense. It's an overtly political album that speaks to a range of important issues. It's also a great album musically, featuring performances by Eric Revis, Jeff "Tain" Watts and Branford Marsalis. In this interview, Doug talks about using his music as a vehicle for political expression; the old school session at which the album was recorded; the inspiration of Kenny Kirkland; and a lot more. For over four and a half decades, Keith Jarrett has penned countless memorable compositions many of which have become integral part of the repertoires of many of today's musicians. As his years at ECM have become increasingly focused on improvisational tour de forces or the exploration of the Great American Songbook, the compositions of Keith Jarrett that other musicians have been covering are mostly the tunes from his years with Atlantic Records and Impulse! Records albums, which perhaps better lend themselves to a re-interpretation. This week we explore some of the best, and some of the more unusual, renditions of the Keith Jarrett Songbook to celebrate the pianist's 76th birthday. The playlist features Big Band Katowice; Woody Herman; Steve Arguelles; Pat Metheny; Mike Gibbs; Georgie Fame; Keith Jarrett; Ulf Wakenius; Noël Akchoté; Sylvain Luc; Peter Lehel; SHIN-SKI; Noah Haidu; and Eric Revis. Detailed playlist at https://spinitron.com/RFB/pl/13172951/Mondo-Jazz (up to Eric Revis). Happy listening!

One of the most talented and accomplished musicians of his generation, Grammy Award-winning bassist and composer Eric Revis joins Andrew for this episode of Constant Constance. They discuss the perils of touring and even the more exotic side of the road, including the time spent on tour playing together with their friends. Some of the stories they recollect are too personal, so names may have been changed to protect the innocent. But joking aside, enjoy this wide-ranging episode between two old friends. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/andrew-norman-dangelo/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/andrew-norman-dangelo/support

This is Play It Like It’s Music. I’m Trevor, thanks for listening. On Wednesday August 12 of 2020 Music is not content, it’s connection.[photo by Rene Thomas]A while back (like 20 years or something back) I put on a joint birthday party with a good friend named Celine at a spot in Alphabet City. For the most part our two groups of friends mixed well, everybody was happy but Celine had cooler musician friends than I did. I spotted her out on the sidewalk talking to this crazy looking dude. Weird glasses, athletic energy, hair everywhere. I had to know this guy, I knew he was into some weird s**t… and sure enough he is. You’ll get to find out today as we spend some time with the very same man, Avram Fefer. He’s always up to some madness.[photo by Nina Roberts]I’ve seen this guy play his horn all over town, from the dustiest unknown free jazz improv spots to the Old Office at the Knit, burning it down at the coolest restaurants and even working with sculptors in high society art galleries. He always has amazing players in tow as well with a list of collaborators to make even the most jaded snob take notice. We’ve been friends for a while and I remember visiting him at his old walkup on Ludlow St for years before he moved into my old neighborhood, Prospect Heights. Now what is it about Avram? Folks on here are into all kinds of music, some of us are focused on mental and technical aspects, others dwell in the emotional areas of great melody and songwriting, Some people are about the message, others all about that booty. We take all kinds. But when you witness a performance that just owns on every level those distinctions just fly out the window. You see someone who commits and delivers, leaving it all on the bandstand and making sure the folks in the room know that a musical animal has wandered through your life. Avram is one of those cats. He takes full possession of the proceedings with full physicality, melody, heart and sophistication. I’ve seen the guy perform dozens of times and he never disappoints. Music is a contact sport to people like Avram and I’m very glad to bring him to you today. His latest album TESTAMENT has received "Best Albums of 2019" honors from Rolling Stone, NPR, Downbeat, Bandcamp, Cadence, Jazz Magazine. It features Marc Ribot, Eric Revis and Chad Taylor. Mike Jeffers and special guest vocalist Jd Walter talking about his new recording "Dressed in a Song" where he performs with 6 of his favorite piano players and mixture of original compositions and well known songs. JD also discusses how he developed his sound and improvisational style at the UNT College of Music and studying with Deborah Brown. Thanks to the Epiphany Center for the Arts. About JD Walter A native of eastern Pennsylvania, JD Walter’s past, present, and future has always embodied music. Walter’s recordings include, "Dressed in a Song", “Sirens in the C-House,” “Clear Day,” “Dedicated to You,” “2Bass, a Face and a Little Skin,” “Live in Portugal,” “Live at the 55 Bar,” “One Step Away,” and Guest appearances on over 100 recordings. While recording his most recent album, “Dressed in a Song,” a life-threatening health scare and subsequent heart and vocal cord surgeries kept Walter out of the studio and off the road for several years. He remains a regular in the New York music scene, and has headlined at Dizzy’s Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, The Blue Note, and The Jazz Gallery, among other venues. He has shared the stage with legendary artists, ranging from Dave Liebman, Billy Hart, Tom Harrell, Eddie Gomez, Bob Dorough, Nicholas Payton, Ben Monder, Sean Jones, Jean-Michel Pilc, Bill Evans, Mark Murphy, Greg Hutchinson, Ari Hoenig, Randy Brecker, Tim Warfield, Jim Ridl, Orrin Evans, Seamus Blake, Igor Butman, Nasheet Waits, Craig Handy, Boris Kozlov, Robin Eubanks, Eric Revis, Billy Drummond, Christian McBride, Adam Nussbaum. Walter currently resides in New York and teaches privately and abroad at The Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen, Holland, The Jazz and Music School in St. Petersburg, and the Music Wave School in Moscow.

Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Branford Marsalis, for those who don’t know, is a saxophonist, and the older brother of Wynton Marsalis, the trumpeter and leader of Jazz at Lincoln Center. They’re from New Orleans, and started out working together, first in Art Blakey’s band and then on each other’s albums. They were already on separate paths by the mid-'80s, though, when Wynton started becoming more and more of a traditionalist and Branford joined Sting’s band. He was also the bandleader on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 1992 to 1995, he played with the Grateful Dead onstage several times in the early '90s and has guested with other jam bands since then, he played on Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power”...basically, he’s a much more adventurous musician than people sometimes think. I’ve been a fan of his work for a lot of years – albums like Crazy People Music, The Dark Keys, Contemporary Jazz, Braggtown, and Four MFs Playin' Tunes are all really impressive, high-level acoustic jazz, without being so complex that they’re alienating. His current band includes Joey Calderazzo on piano, Eric Revis on bass, and Justin Faulkner on drums. Justin’s been with him for ten years, and the other two guys have been around for twenty. They’ve got a new album, The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul, coming out in March, and it’s really, really beautiful stuff; I expect it’s gonna be a record I come back to a lot over the course of the year. In case you’ve never heard an interview with Branford Marsalis before, much like his brother, he has a lot of opinions about what is and isn’t jazz. So you should be prepared for that, when listening to this conversation. It’s a fun one. Music heard in this episode: "Spartacus" (Crazy People Music) "Snake Hip Waltz" (The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul) "The Dark Keys" (The Dark Keys)
Grammy Award-winning bassist and longtime Branford Marsalis collaborator Eric Revis joins Jason for today's deep-dive into growing up in California, being influenced by Parliament and prog rock, gut string explorations, and much more. A special shout-out to Eric Roy of Upton Bass for connecting me with Eric Revis for this conversation! About Eric Revis: One of the most talented and accomplished musicians of his generation, Grammy Award-winning bassist and composer Eric Revis has, over the past 15 years, become an important voice in jazz. Branford Marsalis states, “Eric’s sound is the sound of doom; big, thick, percussive.” Scores of musicians across various disciplines agree. Revis has performed and recorded with Betty Carter, Peter Brotzmann, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Steve Coleman, Ralph Peterson, Lionel Hampton, McCoy Tyner, Andrew Cyrille, and Tarbaby (the experimental trio he tri-leads with Orrin Evans and Nasheet Waits). Manning the bass chair with Branford Marsalis’ powerfully flexible quartet since 1997, Revis has also recorded four brilliant albums as a leader. 2004’s Tales of the Stuttering Mime and 2009’s Laughter’s Necklace of Tears have both revealed his startling range as a musician and composer. Informed by his past but not tethered to it, a glimpse into the musical trajectory of this artist is indelibly clear on his latest release Parallax (Clean Feed ) and the soon to be released City of Asylum (Clean Feed). “Tales of the Stuttering Mime was an amalgam of songs I’d been composing for quite some time,” Revis explains. “Being that there were a lot of different influences at play, it required that I use various band configurations on almost every tune, which was great in that I had a very real connection to all of the musicians involved.” With Laughter’s Necklace of Tears the same conceptual construct was in place in terms of the confluence of musical influences, but the goal was to present it in a more cohesive fashion in terms of having one group navigate the songs for the record as opposed to five or six”. Conceptually improvisational and thematically broad, Parallax (Clean Feed) is timeless and borderless. The albums’ approach is one of inclusion, extrapolation and exploration. Joined by Jason Moran, Ken Vandermark and Nasheet Waits, it is a true document of Revis’ growth as a composer, bassist and sounding board. As on previous recordings, Revis’ playing is personal and distinctive: his tone deep and woody, his execution, agile, melodic and clear. A musical polyglot, Revis is comfortable in any setting, any direction. His skills as a band leader and composer are equally profound and inspiring. This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! 1.
