In Episode 228, Sarah, Catherine (@GilmoreGuide), and Chrissie (@ChrissieWhitley) take stock of the reading year so far, discussing the books, publishing trends, and industry chatter that have defined the first half of 2026. They dive into the biggest publishing stories of the year, the rise of "cozy everything," the continued influence of self-publishing and book-to-screen success stories, and whether it's possible to tap a Book of the Year before the second half of the publishing calendar arrives. Then, they share their Top 5 Books of 2026 So Far and a few disappointing reads that didn't quite live up to expectations. Sol Luckman Uncensored

Michael Drew (Guest)CALI THE DESTROYER is a bold and highly stylized work of visionary fiction that blends dystopian themes, mythological symbolism, and speculative romance into a provocative and imaginative narrative. Sol Luckman constructs a world that is both futuristic and allegorical, using heightened reality to explore control systems, awakening, and resistance. At its core, the story presents a reality where societal structures have collapsed into a controlled, surveillance driven “Fatherland,” shaped by patriarchal power, hidden forces, and distorted systems of authority. Against this backdrop, the narrative introduces Cali and Juice, characters whose connection becomes both personal and mythic, suggesting a bond that transcends ordinary time and identity. What makes the book distinctive is its fusion of genres and tones. It moves between dystopian critique, supernatural romance, and spiritual allegory, often within the same narrative space. This gives the novel a surreal, almost dreamlike quality, where symbolic meaning often carries as much weight as plot progression.Thematically, the book is driven by ideas of awakening, resistance, and hidden truth. It explores what happens when individuals begin to question the systems around them and perceive reality as something constructed rather than fixed. The introduction of mythological and Gnostic elements amplifies this sense of revelation, positioning the story as both a rebellion narrative and a metaphysical journey. The romantic element between Cali and Juice adds emotional intensity and grounding to the broader philosophical themes. Their connection is framed as timeless and foundational, reinforcing the idea that identity and love can exist beyond imposed structures.Overall, CALI THE DESTROYER is a visionary and symbolic dystopian novel that will strongly appeal to readers who enjoy metaphysical fiction, myth driven storytelling, speculative rebellion narratives, and experimental blends of romance and philosophy. The Cannes awards are here, and somehow the Oscar race feels less clear than it did before. In this episode of The Oscars Outsider Podcast, we react to the major winners from the Cannes Film Festival, including the Palme d'Or win for Fjord, and try to figure out what any of it means for the Oscar race. The big question: did Cannes give us a new frontrunner, or did it make the whole season even messier? We dig into the Screen Cannes jury grid, where Fjord landed at 2.5 while several other contenders, including Fatherland, Minotaur, and All of a Sudden, scored higher. We also talk through the mismatch between critical consensus and jury awards, which films feel stronger after Cannes, which ones suddenly look shakier, and whether the Palme winner is actually positioned for Oscar attention. If you follow Cannes, Oscar season, festival buzz, or the strange gap between critics' favorites and awards bodies, this episode is for you.Subscribe for more Oscar race analysis, festival reactions, and awards season chaos.

‘Fatherland', ‘

Quel film succédera à « Un simple accident », Palme d'or l'an dernier ?

We get into the strange energy of this year's festival, the movies that seem built for jury attention, the ones that could break out later, and whether Cannes still feels like the launchpad it used to be.Along the way, we also talk John Travolta's honorary Palme d'Or, Paul Schrader's Cannes grumpiness, Jacob Elordi's jury absence, and the general chaos of trying to read festival buzz from afar. Cellulite e Celluloide - Il cinema su Radio Elettrica

Rhineland: Hitler's Last Defence, 1944–45 by Anthony Tucker-Jones is a dramatic retelling of the desperate battle of the Rhineland during World War II from the German perspective. The Rhineland was where Adolf Hitler sowed the seeds for the Second World War when he remilitarized it in breach of the Treaty of Versailles in 1936, and by late 1944 the Rhine provided the last major obstacle to the advancing Allied armies that were threatening the Fatherland itself. In this new history of this vital campaign, respected military historian Tucker-Jones describes the race against time as the Germans fought to stave off the inevitable. It was essential that the Germans held the west bank in order to protect the Rhine crossings at Cologne, Bonn, Koblenz and Remagen, but Hitler was intent on counter-attacking in the Ardennes in the winter of 1944 and this meant there was little left to bolster the defences of the Rhine.Rhineland relates the course of this desperate defence, describing the build-up of forces and operational plans before going on to tell the story of the campaign from the point of view of the forces involved, from the ordinary German soldier through to the high command.Anthony Tucker-Jones, a former intelligence officer, is a highly prolific writer and military historian with well over 50 books to his name. His work has also been published in an array of magazines and online. He regularly appears on television and radio commenting on current and historical military matters.#rhineland #worldwar2 #hitler #podcast #authorpodcast #anthonytuckerjones #speakingofwriterspodcast

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZw1prITHfg Comrade Vicky of the CPGB-ML speaks about the central role and tremendous impact that revolutionary working women had upon the Great Socialist October Revolution of November 7th 2017, at our celebration of its 108th anniversary held in Saklatvala Hall, Southall, London on Saturday November 8th 2025. Not only did the Women's struggle launch the strike that triggered the October Revolution, but the Bolshevik party and movement would not have succeeded were it not for the participation of very many women throughout its ranks - from Alexandra Kollontai (People's Commissar for Welfare in the initial Soviet government - unheard of and undreampt of in the capitalist nations in 1917!), to Krupskaya and tens of thousands more. Indeed no revolutionary workers movement can succeed unless it is able to mobilise the working women for the struggle. Having come to power, the Revolutionary Soviet government in the RSFSR, in re-building the economy, in uprooting norms of exploitative society, in educating the entire population, and in re-writing the laws and the constitution of the Russian and other Soviet Nations, remade society to suite the needs of the working class and peasant masses, and in so doing revolutionised relations between men and women. For the first time the communist society, under the dictatorship of the proletariat and peasantry, put women on an equal footing, creating legal and actual physical social conditions that allowed women to take a full and active part in the running of society, to work and to govern -- including the mass provision of socialised childcare, creates, kindergartens, and high quality dining-rooms and restaurants throughout the territory of the Soviet Union. It was, of course, the Soviet government that not only decreed the equality of women, but gave the women full equality and full voting rights - more than a decade before the Suffaragist movement in Britain succeeded in wresting any voting concessions for women. Truly, in the Soviet Union, Women held up half the sky! Vicky explains the heroic role that Soviet Women took in the ranks of the Red Army, in smashing the Imperialist war of intervention and above all in defeating and dismantling the German Nazi War Machine, launched with vitriolic fury against he Soviet people on June 22nd 1941. This year is the 80th anniversary of the great victory of the Fatherland liberation war and great ant-fascist war, in which the Soviet people gave 27b million lives to Vanquish German and European Fascism - and China some 40 million to Vanquish Japanese Fascism. During the summer break, the 15-Minute History podcast team are republishing some of their favorite episodes. This episode originally aired on June 12, 2023.___The dull hum of aircraft filled the morning air. German soldiers looked up from the French town of St. Lô, expecting to see a few enemy fighters bearing down on them. Their hearts froze in their chests as nearly a thousand bombers emerged from the clouds. They had heard of the devastation wrought by their enemy on the Fatherland's cities, but St. Lô was only a tiny provincial settlement far from the Paris metropolis. In minutes, their world was aflame as Allied bombs exploded around them and tore flesh and metal apart in equal measure. The panzer division holding St. Lô was nearly annihilated in the first of three waves, and little was left as the sun reached its noon height. Then, the survivors heard engines approaching from the north and east in the direction of the Normandy beaches. Tanks and half-tracks bearing white stars swarmed through the town, finishing off the defenders and ripping open the Nazi left flank that had held the Allies back for over a month. The Third United States Army is one of the best-known units of the Second World War. From the opening move on St. Lô in August 1944 to the war's end nine months later, it liberated an area of Nazi-occupied Europe roughly the size of Afghanistan. Its soldiers were the best-trained men in the US Army, its officers and NCOs among the most professional in American military history, and its record of battle remains unsurpassed in enemy casualties inflicted and land covered. Most of the credit is due, of course, to the soldiers in tanks and trucks, but even the proudest of these would point to their commander as the man who made the Third Army such a terrifying weapon of war: General George S. Patton, Jr.Join us for this special, double-length episode of 15-Minute History as we teach you about General George Patton, his life, leadership, heroism, and his effect on the world we know today.

Medical tourism is nothing new, but few think of going abroad for their teeth. Yet most Americans have inadequate dental insurance and the system is geared to abandon you just when you need it the most. Aleister Crowley was an English occultist, ceremonial magician, poet, philosopher, political theorist, novelist, mountaineer, and painter. He founded the religion of Thelema, identifying himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Æon of Horus in the early 20th century. Most know of him from his occult celebrity built on the premise, "Do What Thou Will Is The Whole of The Law" but what about his other "secret" life as an agent for the British government? Joel explores more of Crowley's time as a secret agent and how the Beast was a catalyst to drag the United States into World War I. He looks at Crowley's entrance into the U.S. in 1914 and the different handlers he worked for when he came to New York. He takes an even deeper dive into Crowley's time working for George Sylvester Viereck and his writings for The Fatherland, a German propaganda outlet to dissuade the U.S. from entering the war. Lastly, Joel takes a look at the ill-fated, Lusitania, and how Crowley manipulated the Germans into attacking it by orders of British Intelligence. But it's her passionate support for the United States, her adopted homeland, and the troops fighting in World War II that led Hitler to label her a traitor to the "Fatherland." When she could have enjoyed the indulgences of fame, she risked everything. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
