(Sendung vom 18.1.)

This week, we welcome bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Dave King to The JAZZIZ Podcast. Anderson and King are two of the founding members of The Bad Plus, one of the defining bands of 21st-century jazz. After over a decade as an acclaimed piano trio, with Ethan Iverson first and Orrin Evans later, Anderson and King have reinvented The Bad Plus as a dynamic quartet with guitarist Ben Monder and saxophonist Chris Speed. This is the lineup featured on their new, self-titled album, which is due out on September 30 via Edition Records. Despite the major change in the lineup, the band's objective of challenging conventions and pushing their unique approach to jazz in boundary-breaking new directions remains unaltered. Their music, as well as this podcast conversation, testifies to their passion, drive and intent. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jazziz/support

Burning Ambulance Podcast

Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Get the Burning Ambulance email newsletter I first heard Tim Berne on a John Zorn album – Spy Vs. Spy, from 1989, where the two of them, plus Mark Dresser on bass and Joey Baron and Michael Vatcher on drums, play 17 Ornette Coleman tunes in 40 minutes. It’s one of the most intense records you’ll ever hear in your life. They play almost all the tunes at hardcore punk speed, and the two drummers are delivering blast beats like they’re auditioning for Napalm Death. Some people love it, and some people fucking hate it. I'm in the former category. Anyway, Berne’s own music doesn’t always have that same punk rock aggression, but it’s definitely intense and can get very loud. He’s originally from upstate New York, but has been based in Brooklyn for basically his entire professional career, which started in the 1970s when he was studying with Julius Hemphill. Hemphill is Berne’s single biggest influence, as you’ll hear in this interview. Berne is very independent; he’s started two different independent labels to put out his own music – first Empire, which he used to make five albums in the late 70s, and later Screwgun, which continues to this day. He was signed to Columbia for a couple of years, though, and has made a bunch of records for ECM with his current primary band, Snakeoil. They’ve been together for about a decade. Berne’s bands tend to have great names – he’s led Hard Cell, Caos Totale, Science Friction, Bloodcount, and Big Satan, among others. He’s also currently a member of Broken Shadows, a quartet with Chris Speed on tenor sax, Reid Anderson on bass, and Dave King on drums. They play the music of Ornette Coleman, Julius Hemphill, Dewey Redman and Charlie Haden, and they have a couple of live albums you can get on Bandcamp and a studio LP that’s only available as part of a ridiculously expensive subscription box set from the Newvelle label. This interview was recorded last Thursday, November 5, which is why I mention obsessively refreshing Twitter at the beginning – we were both waiting for election results along with everything else. Anyway, we talk about a lot of subjects – Berne has been a really influential composer, particularly among 21st century jazz players from Brooklyn, so we discuss that, but we also talk about Julius Hemphill, about his various bands and his creative relationships with Matt Mitchell and David Torn, about his approach to composing and about the depth of his catalog, and much more. I had a really good time talking to him, and I hope you’ll enjoy listening to our conversation. If you enjoy this podcast, please consider visiting patreon.com/burningambulance and becoming a subscriber. For just $5 a month, you can help keep this show and Burning Ambulance as a whole active and thriving. Thanks! Music heard in this episode: Tim Berne/Matt Mitchell, "Increminced" (Spiders) Tim Berne's Snakeoil, "Moornoats" (The Deceptive 4)

When you're new to sales working at a startup, you've got a lot on your plate. You've got to handle cold calling, pitching, customer relationships, demos, prospecting, follow-ups, and your entire pipeline. In today's episode of the Sales Mastermind, we help Joel Bein get started off with his Sales career on the right foot working at https://www.crash.co as head of partnerships & content. Connect with Joel Bein for inspiration, wisdom, and personal growth: https://www.joelbein.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/joel-bein-9b8343110/ Timestamps: 0:00 - 3:20 Introduction & Joel Bein's role overview at Crash.co 5:40 Overview of Joel's beginner tech stack, and how to improve: Entry level CRM suggestions: Hubspot, Close, PipeDrive Email tracking via Gmail with chrome extensions Cheap software to run email cadences directly from Gmail 11:11 How Joel thinks about prospecting by finding clues that his prospect resonates with Crash's mission 17:19 Overcoming psychological resistance to following-up multiple times Logan Westberg offers a tactic: Make an up-front commitment to continue following-up if they don't hear back. That takes responsibility off you and shifts it to them. Brandy Drzymkowski offers encouragement: If you've done your research, you trust your research, and you genuinely believe you can help someone, people appreciate that energy and enthusiasm. 21:41 Reid Anderson asks: Who are you reaching out to at the colleges specifically? 24:02 Nick Rundlett concludes: Always pick up the phone and call when you can! That's how true relationships start, and that's how you make your money as a sales professional.

Mama Jazz, the Vilnius' most famous jazz festival, ended the weekend with the American trio The Bad Plus - Dave King, Reid Anderson, and Orrin Evans. This ensemble combines the simplicity of popular music with snobbish jazz virtuosity. The full harmony of the three instruments (piano, double bass, and percussion) is revealed not only in the experimental and original works of the trio, but also in the remixes of bands such as Radiohead, Nirvana or Tears For Fears. A year and a half ago, the ensemble underwent major changes when a longtime trio pianist was replaced by Orrin Evans. We talk to the new pianist of the Bad Plus about his passion for music, dedication to the ensemble, and daily routine.

This episode Seth and Rob take a phone call from Reid Anderson of The Bad Plus, and topics discussed include some of the band’s adventurous releases, working with Josh Redman and Bill Frisell, the differences between European and US audiences and his band mate Ethan Iverson’s famous blog. Then Jojo Hermann of Widespread Panic comes in and lets our listeners know about his new band Slim Wednesday and the recent recording they did in Atlanta. JoJo also takes us back to New York in the 80s, where he would initially cut his teeth as a musician. But we also learn why he chose to move to Mississippi and how that in turn led him to finding his way into Widespread Panic - and he shares some stories from his years with those icons of jam. Then we get a small window into a poolside chat conducted by Weiner’s alter-ego LL PoolJ. He chats with Deer Tick about a few things including their next (planned to be a double) album, the sense of community among their peer bands and bonding excretory experiences. The Bad Plus is an accoustic trio with Ethan Iverson on piano, Reid Anderson on bass and David King on drums. They all compose and they move in their own direction. In other words they are not your "standard' Jazz piano trio. They have carved out an niche for themselves through their original compositions and compositions by people outside the Jazz spectrum like Davis Bowie, Kurt Cobain etc. They also play the odd standard tune as well but with their own imprint. They are all virtuoso musicians and represent the best definition of Jazz: the sound of surprise.
