Any track marked * has been given either a tiny or a slightly larger 41 Rooms tweak/edit/chop and the occasional tune might sound a bit dodgy, quality-wise. On top of that, the switch between different decades and production values never helps in the mix here. And a bit of a croak in my voice here and there. A temporary glitch, hopefully. Lyric of Playlist 146 Trickery involved but it has to be The Bots! 00.00 (Intro) THE FLAMINGOS – Stars (Edit) – Unreleased demo – 1983. Episode #1 for info. 00.41 NEW ORDER – Ruined In A Day (Reading Festival, 1993) – In Concert – 577, CD – BBC Transcription – 1993 I and my four-year-old, Alice were there, on what was a triumphant return, with the wonderful ‘Ruined’ in amongst new numbers from the band’s then recently released Republic album nobody would have previously heard in a live setting. BBC Transcription Services recordings – produced to service radio stations and usually for a very limited time frame for broadcast – had moved from vinyl to CD but with runs still only in their low hundreds New Order completists would be struggling to own a copy of this one… and I don’t. 04.42 MERIC LONG – A Small Act Of Defiance – Kablooey, LP – Polyvinyl Record Company – 2025 Book-ending a bunch of releases through the years as a member of The Dodos, Kablooey is seemingly Long’s first solo release under his own name since 2006. 07.43 BIOCHEMICAL DREAD – False Kings Of The Earth – 12″ – Pulsolid – 2004 Besides his work with Cabaret Voltaire this 12″ demonstrates there are gaps in my knowledge of Richard H. Kirk’s lengthy discography elsewhere. A copy of ‘False Kings… ‘ however is currently heading my way. RIP, Richard. 13.21 DARKSIDE – One Last Nothing – Download only – Matador – 2025 Including a past member of the 41 Rooms playlist parish, Nicolas Jaar, a US trio currently NOT releasing a 12″, though their Bandcamp visual hints otherwise. 18.32 AGENTS WITH FALSE MEMORIES – Agents With False Memories (extract), CD only – Ash International / Soleilmoon Recordings – 1996 Extract, indeed as Richard H. Kirk promptly returns to show 146 with this four minute snippet from a 53 minute track. 22.34 HUMANIZER – Shinobi – ? – ? – 2000s? Ignoring the slight Liam Gallagher drawl and with zero connection to any Death Metal band of the same name, this might have been Manchester sourced… and maybe with a Peter Hook connection. That’s what I’m vaguely remembering… from over a decade ago. Dunno… A ‘demo’ version, minus vocals, might also get an outing here at some point. 27.08 DIFFERENT GEAR – A Little Bit Paranoid (Extended Mix) * – 12″ – City Rockers – 2002 Courtesy of a ‘Phil Dirtbox’, the vocal is the winner here. 32.59 MERZ – Sorrow In The Sky (Nightingale Vs The Crow) – 7″ b-side – Lotus Records – 2002 The stuff that people sing about… and here with gusto and passion, to boot! 36.55 LUSCIOUS JACKSON – Why Do I Lie? (Sessions at 54th, 11.97) – Stream only – 1997 Vocalist, Jill Cunniff’s tale of lying sounding best live! 40.13 THE POPPY FAMILY – I Was Wondering – 7″ – London – 1971 A bit of a strange arrangement, this one. Albeit with a key change in there – verses with no choruses! Weird and wonderful… and maybe a bit brave in the pop world of the early ’70s, where the only PF track I remember hearing as a young teen was Which Way Are You Going Billy? That won’t be getting a 41 Rooms spin. 42.43 SOPHIE JAMIESON – Camera – I Still Want To Share, LP – Bella Union – 2025 Being over in Brighton recently it seemed appropriate I buy her clear vinyl album from the Bella Union shop and re Camera? It’s the subtle build in Sophie’s vocal and she’ll be here again at some point. 46.59 MARTYN BATES – The Rhyme Of Miracles – Arriving Fire, CD only – Ambivalent Scale – 2014 Martyn instils presence in a tune like few others for me. 50.28 JOSE FELICIANO – First Of May – 7″ b-side – RCA – 1969 ‘Feliciano seems to be on a heavy Bee Gees kick… after ‘Marley Purt Drive,’ he now does ‘First Of May’ and ‘Gotta Get A Message To You.’ And with his highly stylised projection, Jose manages to make them sound totally removed from anything the Gibb brothers originated’. – Disc (edited review of the album, 10 to 23), 15.11.69. As far as I know the Bee Gees tune was only ever released on a 7″ (my ‘format of choice’) for Jose in Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines and Spain and never as an A-side and arranger, Al Capps most probably winced if he ever got to see the NZ pressing below. Strangely, Jose’s very rarely performed the song live. I’ve only noted it three times, including two at London’s Jazz Cafe, in 1996 and again in 1998 and at the former it surfaced nearly under duress. With the audience (maybe unsurprisingly) constantly shouting out for past JF favourites Jose countered, ‘You know there’s a lot of songs you people ask me for that unfortunately… and I’m not being rude, a lot of artists are rude, they do it on purpose, but some of the songs that you ask me to sing, do you know that I haven’t sung them in years and I’ve forgotten the words and rather than make an ass out of myself that’s why I don’t sing them, OK? So, don’t take it personal… I don’t sing those songs anymore. But I’ll tell you what though there’s some that you ask for that I do remember, like this one. I hope that this one will satisfy you.’ That rare sighting was even more surprising considering Jose had taken the rare move of including his own recording of the song when guesting on Brian Matthew’s My Top Twelve for BBC Radio 1 back in June 1974. 54.11 JAPAN – Alien – Quiet Life, LP – Ariola Hansa – 1980 Bedford: Heronscroft, Putnoe, 1980 and Winkles, 1981… with a few Japan gigs thrown in at the time. 58.47 JOHN CALE – Chinese Envoy (M:FANS) – M: FANS, 2 LP – Double Six – 2016 ‘Approached as a reinterpretation of Cale's 1982 improvisational album, Music for a New Society… M:FANS is something of a funhouse mirror reflection of that work, using the basic song-structures of the original album as a starting point and using time, experience and the technological advances of the ensuing years to bring a new focus to the tunes. Some selections are comfortably familiar, while others have a significantly different footprint‘. – KCRW 01.02.32 ICEHOUSE – No Promises (Dance Mix) * – 12″ – Chrysalis – 1990 Fully five years after the track had seemingly done its thing it got an extended outing in Spain. 01.07.58 DAVID BOWIE – This Is Not America (BBC concert) – Bowie At The Beeb, 2CD – EMI – 2000 Part of Bowie’s special set for a small invited audience at the BBC’s Radio Theatre, in London, June 2000. 01.11.29 JOHNNY KEATING – Theme from Z-Cars (Johnny Todd) – 7″ – Piccadilly – 1962 Did I realise the grittier scripts involved here than had been delivered by Jack Warner’s strolling forerunner, Dixon Of Dock Green? Nah, I was five when Z-Cars kicked off but the theme (based on the traditional folk song, Johnny Todd) still brings a fuzzy feel. And Wikipedia will give you the full story on why Everton FC players come out to the tune at home games. 01.13.22 MARC COHN – ‘Walking in Memphis (Mahna Mahna)’ – Stream only – 1990’s? Cohn definitely wouldn’t have seen this coming, as the self proclaiming Mahna Mahna and the Snowths duo upstage him in a short but cheeky mashup (of sorts) I happened on via Youtube a couple of decades ago. I’ll openly admit I was a Muppets fan when they first aired on UK TV back in the mid ’70s and with Statler & Waldorf the stars for me I remember walking my girlfriend of the time, Jill home from work and then running up the hill to my house to record the show. Pre the age of video recorders, at one point there was a stack of ten to twenty AGFA(!!) cassette tapes of the shows in my bedroom. Getting back to Cohn, the fact he’s ‘racing’ a bit here actually adds to the cheeriness and I salute whoever was involved. 01.14.44 BERNARD CRIBBINS – The Hole In The Ground – 7″ – Parlophone – 1962 And like the Z-Cars theme I was five when this was released and I’d have definitely been singing this one in the years close after – and weirdly, although it’s the second tune from ’62 on this show, it’s not the last. 01.16.27 THE BOTS – Fuzzy Math – George W. Bush Greatest Hits, v/artists, CDr only – Spin The World – 2004 I heard this cut and paste work of art somewhere around its ‘release’ and as of 2004… ‘… utilizing the revolutionary Presidential Truth Filter(PTF). The PTF operates like this: All presidential statements are recorded, and made into a huge database. The database is searchable by speech, phrase, keyword, emotional intensity, etc. In parallel, an analysis is made of the historical circumstances of the particular presidency. The question must be asked, what is this man (all men so far…) really all about? What is a defining characteristic of this presidency? The final question which must be addressed by the PTF is, how can we use the assets in the database to concatenate the truth, and make the President speak it? The first attempt was Bushwack, in 1992. This turned into a huge hit before the Presidential election in 1992, though BMI denied that it was ever on the air at all. Through October of that year, stations such as San Francisco’s Live105 were playing it almost hourly. In 1997 Rock The House was a popular download at an early digital music download startup, muzic.com. In 2003 Bushwack2 was released at about the start of the Iraq war. The mood of the song is quite grim, as the truth of those times was interpreted by the PTF. In 2004, the PTF was reprogrammed to emphasize economics and general silliness, and Fuzzy Math was born. We think it’s the best one yet. Judge the results for yourself’. – thebots.net 01.19.26 DREXCIYA – Black Sea – The Journey Home, 12″ EP – Warp – 1995 First heard on either of Colin Faver’s or Colin Dale’s techno shows on KISS FM. Sounds more likely it was the former. 01.24.58 E-DANCER – Heavenly * – 12″ – KMS – 1997 The Inner City (‘Big Fun’) man, Kevin Saunderson with his techno head on. 01.28.51 CHARLES WEBSTER – Your Life * – 12″ – Peacefrog – 2000 Pitched up a bit (‘+3%’ says my file iD) this is a class slice of soulful techno/house. 01.33.11 CHARLOTTE DAY WILSON – Selfish – Download only – Stone Woman Music – 2025 This r&b musician has been around for a decade or so but I wouldn’t have guessed, judging by this slight departure to a ’90s UK garage feel (first half anyway). It suits her. 01.36.48 BENCH – Felice – Bliss, 2LP – Cylinder Recordings – 2000 The fifth appearance on 41 Rooms to date for this pretty much forgotten duo. 01.39.36 BLUE STATES – Your Girl – 12″ EP – Memphis Industries – 1999 First heard on a compilation CD a mate of mine, Sid put together, of fave tracks forwarded by mates of his. Not their own tracks, you understand. 01.43.45 THE MIRACLES – I’ll Try Something New – 7″ – Tamla – 1962 Hellfire! Those breakdown strings mid way are a bit of a jolt! Easy, Smokey! Writer, Robinson’s own version is actually the third to make it to 41 Rooms and his vocal arrangement sounds more like a remake than either Kiki Dee’s ‘straighter’ take or even the Supremes and Temptations stab at the song, when chronologically they both followed this Miracles single. 01.46.14 SMITH & MUDD – Blue River – 2LP – Claremont 56 – 2007 Electronic… downtempo… shuffling… drifting… or maybe flowing. 01.48.38 MERZ – A.M. (Good Morning) * – Single-sided, white label 12″ only – 1995 The second artist to return this show, multi instrumentalist and songwriter, Conrad Merz and his at times very idiosyncratic vocal (‘Many Weathers Apart’, for instance) seem to have trodden their own path through the years. 01.53.45 CRAIG ARMSTRONG (feat ELIZABETH FRASER) – This Love (& The Life That I Have) * – 41 Rooms Soft Mash Up only – Early 2000s I grabbed the extra voice – Virginia McKenna as Second World War spy Violette Szabo, reading the code poem The Life That I Have at the end of the film Carve Her Name With Pride – fully thirty plus years ago and I had a stab at floating it over This Love a long time ago but recently had another go. Aided by Jazz The Glass, we pitched her down slightly and then I took out a chunk of the poem in the second half. Not that it’s going to happen but I reckon it would need the song itself re-arranged/edited to work perfectly but methinks the idea is still a cool one. Show 147 hopefully surfaces Jan 4. Brandon Sanders, has always cut his own unique path. Born in Kansas City but spending his formative years in Compton, Brandon grew up in a musical household. He also honed his love of Jazz at the Kansas City jazz club, Casablanca, run by his grandmother. But first, college called. After playing basketball for a junior college near Los Angeles, he enrolled at the behest of his grandmother—actually, she did the enrolling for him—at the University of Kansas. While studying communications there, Brandon became a walk-on practice player for the top-seeded team in the country where quickly gained a reputation as a dogged defender. After receiving his undergraduate degree in communications, and Master's in social work at Kansas, Brandon dedicated himself to that field. But eventually his passion for music caught up with him. So, at age 25, he taught himself how to play drums, until a Kansas City drummer named Todd Strait, who used to play with Marian McPartland, took Brandon under his wing. And with years of intense practice, Brandon attained such a high level of proficiency that he was accepted at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he formed friendships and musical associations with future jazz greats including Warren Wolf, trumpeter Darren Barrett, and drummer Kendrick Scott. He started playing in various bands at Boston clubs including Wally's Jazz Cafe and the Wonder Bar, gaining experience that eventually led him New York. Now living in Brooklyn, Brandon has a third album titled “Lasting Impression,” on the heels of two critically acclaimed releases “Brandon Sanders: The Tables Will Turn,” and his first titled, “Compton's Finest.” In this episode, I talk with Brandon about his remarkable career trajectory, and the forming of collaborations with a stellar list of jazz all-stars to create a path to his musical success.

IMPRINTS - Reinforced Records (1990-1996) - d mix & Evolve Reinforced Records. Inspired by a night in the Jazz Cafe recently with 4 Hero, Fabio and Grooverider amongst others. I thought it was time to jump into a truly foundational label. One of the first i collected actually! Founded in ‘89 by Marc Mac and Gus Lawrence then joined by Dennis McFarlane. Most of the early releases were combinations of the founders themselves, 4Hero, Manix and Tek 9. Moving towards late ‘92/'93 the label was at the forefront of the darker side of the music. Looking at Goldie with Rufige, the continued work of Doc Scott and Nasty Habits, and not forgetting 4Hero and the techier sample led sound of theirs. You also have to mention the Enforcers Series that was so popular and are still so sought after! I've decided to focus on the earlier music from Reinforced, finishing up just about where the ‘2nd Phase' started. I'll take you right up to ‘96. I'll dedicate a final section to one of my favourite producers, Nookie. Who took the Reinforced energy and added that musicality he's so well known for. Before that is a mix of other artists that shaped the sound of this label. From the craziness of Nick OD, the drums of Ray Keith, the pianos of Manix, the edge of Rider to ruffness of Rufige and the drums of Manix, the feel of Manix, basically Manix… stop saying Manix… Manix. Speaking of M***x, I've included three tracks in the mix from one of my favourite EPs of all time. Tune for tune a winner… the EP is Called ‘Oblivion (Head in the Clouds)'. Find me a better track for track EP… I'll wait… Expect to hear everything from Rivet1201 all the way through to RIVET1293, I've had a lot of fun pulling out my favourites from this weighty back catalogue, I really hope you enjoy it. Welcome to Episode #23 of the 90s State of Mind podcast - a collaborative project between 4ever in Electric Dreams and Blue-in-Green:RADIO. This podcast series sees Imran (London, UK) and Rhonda (California, USA) delve into some of their favourite releases from the 90s and for this episode, the pair celebrate the 1998 album from the neo-soul pioneer, D'Angelo's 'Live at the Jazz Cafe'. Recorded in 1995 following the release of D'Angelo's debut full-length 'Brown Sugar', 'Live at the Jazz Cafe' is a live album by neo-soul luminary released on June 30, 1998, on EMI Records. It was later released in Japan on December 7, 1999, with a bonus track. The live recordings are taken from D'Angelo's appearance at the Jazz Café in London, England, on September 14, 1995. The album was subsequently re-issued in 2014 with a recording of the complete show, including previously unreleased tracks. Imran & Rhonda delve deep into 90s classic looking at the musicians involved, discussing the various iterations of the album along with the overall mystique of D'Angelo: three studio albums over a period of thirty years is a mind-blowing statistic but again a testament to his music that fans still eagerly await a new release. www.4everinelectricdreams.com/ Blue-in-Green:RADIO is a London-based online internet radio station which celebrates 21st century soul, jazz, funk, Latin & hip-hop music. www.blueingreenradio.com TuneIn: bit.ly/2LBK0BD
You're in for a treat today! And a little interruption from conversations from my archive. I recently did a gig at London's Jazz Cafe playing keys and singing for a special concert in honour of South Africa Freedom Day and the late great South African trumpeter, Hugh Masekela. The person leading the band was his percussionist and friend of nearly 50 years, Francis Fuster.Born in Sierra Leone to a Liberian mother and Swiss father. Now 81 (but looks more like a man in his 60's!) a 7th Dan black belt in karate, upright and sharp as a tack. We talk about his journey from dancing, to drumming, to teaching, to percussion. About being a member of the band described as the Beatles of Africa, Gerald Pino and The Heartbeats. We talk about his close friendship with icon and disruptor musician Fela Kuti, also the reason he started learning karate. How he went from Sierra Leone to Liberia, to Ivory Coast, to Ghana, to Nigeria, ending up in New York and the wildness of that period. We talk about playing with Paul Simon and the huge record that was Graceland. And his close professional and personal relationship with Hugh Masekela. This was a joyous interview (what was meant to be an hour long conversation, was closer to 2!) So it's divided into 2 parts.Guest: Francis FusterTitle: You gotta be readyMusic: Bach, Handel, Miles Davis and John ColtraneMusic linksGeraldo Pino and the Heartbeats, Maria Lef for WakaHugh Masekela, Don't go lose it babyHugh Masekela, Bring Him Back Home (Nelson Mandela)Francis Fuster, NajesuehOther linksShango-Ja Martial Arts AcademyFind out ways to support the Israel-Palestine project click herePodcast WebsitePodcast IG Hosted on Acast. Free tickets to see Judith at the Jazz Cafe London on Monday 24th of July. www.judithowen.nethttps://www.instagram.com/judithowenmusichttps://twitter.com/judithowenJudith Owen, a performer whose stylistic range spans rock, pop, classical, jazz, blues, and musical theatre, Owen is also a comedic actress and master storyteller. Born into an overtly musical Welsh family, Judith Owen grew up in London surrounded by classical music, ballet, theatre, and the fine arts. Owen was also exposed to many jazz icons and Broadway musicals that her parents loved (the mixture would become her signature sound). Owen quickly began performing at a variety of different venues around London. Her unique hybrid of classical/ jazz-influenced styled sound soon affirmed a regular slot at Ronnie Scotts. The latest iteration of Owen began with the arrival of her 13th album, Come On & Get It. The project is rooted in her childhood fascination with the jazz music of some of the ballsiest women of the Jazz and Blues world, including unsung trailblazers - Nellie Lutcher and Julia Lee - whom she discovered hidden on the shelves of her father's record collection. Captivated and enchanted by these "unapologetic" chanteuses of the 40's/50's (along with Pearl Bailey, Dinah Washington, Blossom Dearie, Peggy Lee, Julie London), Owen made it her mission to dig deep and find out more from both a musical and historical perspective. The album was recorded at Esplanade Studios in New Orleans - the city Owen now calls home - with a stellar cast of musicians, including Jason Marsalis, Donald Harrison, Charlie Gabriel, Nicholas Payton, David Torkanowsky, Kevin Louis, Evan Christopher, Ricardo Pascal and many more. The result is the most joyful, uplifting, and empowering project. With the London Times calling it ‘one of the most joyous releases of the year', and having garnered support from flagship Jazz radio stations Jazz FM in the UK, TSF in France, and plays across NPR stations in the US, the album has already reached over a million streams on Spotify. Owen kicked off 2023 performing to thrilled audiences in Europe with sold out shows in both Paris and Milan. Accompanied by her All Star New Orleans band ‘the Gentlemen Callers', Owen's live shows are an ‘exercise in confidence' as she “lights up the room with her red hair and her charisma.” “In a snap of her fingers, she takes her .. audience with her, and dictates the tempo to her musicians with a naturalness that is almost divine.” [Toute la Culture] Owen will be on the road for much of 2023 starting with shows in New Orleans this May, before taking a 5 night residency at The McKittrick in New York. She returns to Europe this summer for a series of festival dates and a headline show promoted by Jazz FM at London's Jazz Cafe, before touring across the US in the fall. Judith Owen is co-creator and co-host of the annual “Christmas Without Tears” charity variety show, alongside husband Harry Shearer, that has featured guests including Steven Merchant, Tim Minchin, Catherine O'Hara, and many others. Growing up in his hometown of Atlanta, artist/producer Sol Messiah was inundated with the rich and energizing spirit of Hip Hop culture. Getting his start as a breakdancer, Sol Messiah built his reputation as a b-boy before traveling to NYC to join the legendary Rock Steady Crew. Inspired by New York Hip Hop legends, Sol Messiah fell in love with another foundational element of Hip Hop culture: DJing. Spending untold hours mastering the skill, and acquiring the musical knowledge required of the DJ, Sol Messiah was prepared to make the leap into producing records, the next step in his musical journey. A talented and skilled producer, Sol Messiah eventually linked up with Atlanta legend and veteran producer Dallas Austin. For years, Messiah would work alongside Dallas to create a deep catalog filled with timeless tracks for TLC, Madonna, Monica, Boyz II Men and more. At the same time, Messiah would continue to build his reputation as a DJ, securing several club residencies and gaining popularity and acclaim for his classic Sol Messiah Mixtape series. After separating with Austin in 1997 to pursue his own musical path independently, Sol Messiah spent years building an impressive catalog and further established himself as a go-to producer for a wide range of acts. Some of his most notable credits from this era include “Rain” and “Picture Perfect” from Chamillionaire's platinum album The Sound Of Revenge, Nappy Roots' “Roll Again”, David Banner's “Ridin'” featuring Talib Kweli & Dead Prez as well as Dead Prez's “Hell Yeah”, featuring Jay-Z. Soon, Sol Messiah would embark on a fruitful musical partnership with a fierce lyricist named Sa-Roc. Together, Sa-Roc and Messiah have released over a dozen projects thus far, including Sa-Roc's groundbreaking 2020 debut on Rhymesayers, The Sharecropper's Daughter. As a duo, Sa-Roc and Sol Messiah have amassed a global reach, touring internationally and rocking crowds across continents. They have performed at the legendary Jazz Cafe in London, performed live for BBC and have shared the stage with luminaries such as Common, The Roots and Jay Electronica. On his latest album, GOD CMPLX, Sol Messiah connects with some of the finest MCs in the game to create a collection of head-bopping Hip Hop music that's both innovative and inspiring. Featuring guest performances from KXNG Crooked, Sa-Roc, Evidence of Dilated Peoples, Locksmith, Stic.Man of Dead Prez, Che Noir, Lyric Jones, Mickey Factz, Cambatta, Planet Asia, TriState, Narubi Selah, Murs, Da BackWudz, Slug of Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, and Baba Zumbi of Zion I, GOD CMPLX is a powerful and engaging project. The album comes out swinging with the title track, “GOD CMPLX,” which features KXNG Crooked and Sa-Roc trading slick and fiery bars over an epic, grandiose beat. Showcasing the versatility of Sol Messiah's sound, “Limitless” finds Evidence getting busy over a dramatic, piano & string-infused track. From the brassy, drum-heavy sound of “The Hard Way” (feat. Che Noir, Sa-Roc & Lyric Jones) to the haunting vocal harmonies of “Sol Supreme” (feat. Cambatta), GOD CMPLX is not only full of bangers, it's also a diverse gallery of sounds that serves as a testament to Sol Messiah's skills as both a producer and a visionary. The journey that Sol Messiah began so many years ago, as a youth discovering Hip Hop in Atlanta, has no ending in sight. With his gifted ear and fierce dedication to Hip Hop culture, he continues to use his craft to build his own body of work as well as help maintain and elevate the culture of Hip Hop as a whole. Alexander Zonjic was born in Windsor, Ontario in 1951. He is a radio host and a versatile professional flutist with an extensive and varied career recording and performing jazz and classical music. Alexander learned to play the guitar and performed as lead guitarist in a local rhythm and blues band by age 15.In this episode, Alexander shares his experience on how he got the great opportunity for his musical career. In the “Bout It or Doubt It” segment you will hear his thoughts on the topics of “Gardening” and “Baseball games” Listen to this episode and enjoy some of his music - Motor City Sway, Jazz Cafe and Memphis Underground. Highlights: 03:25 If you got an opportunity to play at Baker's that was a career move. 05:35 And there I am in Baker's playing my show, you know, playing like I normally do like it's the last gig of my life and we never leave anything not on that stage.15:15 The cliche and all of that is, it's more about the journey than it is the destination or even the arrival at a destination because, again, they just keep moving the finish line. 36:52 We all start out with the fantasy that we're going to get signed by a major label. We're going to get this amazing manager. I'm not gonna worry about anything.01:00:59 For people like us, we can conveniently go down this road and I don't think for one minute that it's easy.Contact:Fresh Coast Jazz FestivalAlexander Zonjic

John-Michael's guests are world renown musicians Kevin Eubanks and Orrin Evans who have a new musical project called EEE (The Eubanks-Evans Experience.) the debut duo recording by two of jazz's most acclaimed and eclectic artists.Due out March 18, 2022, EEE brings together guitar great Kevin Eubanks with adventurous pianistOrrin Evans for a set that's as wide-ranging and unpredictable as audiences have come toexpect from these two risk-takers. Created in an atmosphere of spontaneity and try-anythingexperimentation, the repertoire veers from gut-rumbling blues to delicate, air impressionism, mixing up on-the-spot originals with funk-jazz deep cuts and classic tunes by jazz masters.Eubanks and Evans share more than their Philly roots - though that's not an aspect that can be discounted, and the city's tension between brotherly love and gritty attitudecourses through the album's veins. Both also bring a wealth of experience to the table, along with a friendship of long standing. Eubanks, middle brother of the well-known jazzfamily, made his name through a series of electrifying releases in the 1980s before spendinga decade and a half as a bandleader for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Since that stintended in 2010, he reemerged as a vital voice on the modern jazz scene leading hisown bands along with resuming his partnership with bassist Dave Holland in the bandPrism. Eubanks is also currently co-host of Fox First Run's hit comedy/game show You Bet Your Life with Jay Leno, which premiered in Fall, 2021 and was recently picked up for Year 2 for the 2022 - 2023 television season.Nominated for a 2018 Grammy Award his Captain Black Big Band, Evans hadbeen splitting his time recently between his own prolific performing career and newlyappointed role as the Artist in Residence of the DC Jazz Festival. While EEE marks the pair's recording debut as a duo, there's an inviting ease and scintillatingchemistry to the meeting of Evans and Eubanks that speaks to the parallel histories as wellas their shared fearlessness. That's reflected in their offbeat choice of material on the album, most of which was decided upon at the spur of the moment - both in studio and onstageat Philadelphia's Chris' Jazz Cafe. The album harkens back to Eubanks' 1983 debut Guitarist with the album's opening track "The Novice Bounce,"beginning the album with a sauntering improvisation which builds into a soulful bounce, rife with momentsof tasteful interplay. The duo continues with a reimagining of the Tom Browne song "Dreamin' of Lovin' You."Departing from the funky upbeat feel of the original, this version is an introspective ballad fully embodying the 'dream' aspect of the title. Evans contributed the heartfelt ballad "Dawn Marie," a tribute to his wifeand creative partner, Dawn Marie Evans.Freedom is a theme that throughout the DNA of this release, and the freedom of two like-minded, and deeply well-versed artists playing in a duo context allows for spontaneous creation of the highest echelon.SPRING 2022 TOUR DATES:3/30: Oakland, CA @ Yoshi's Oaklandhttps://yoshis.com/events/buy-tickets/eubanks-evans-experience/detail3/31: Santa Cruz, CA @ Kuumbwa Jazzhttps://www.kuumbwajaz
