What do a high-stakes poker game, clandestine meetings, shell companies, and an ex-CIA agent have in common? They all contributed to the future of Walt Disney World. We brought Aaron Goldberg, author of "Buying Disney's World" on today's show, to take us down the path that Walt has set in motion decades ago. From gathering his team to setting his sights on the perfect area in Florida for his new park, Aaron paints a wonderfully engaging landscape, detailing just what it took to bring a Disney park to Florida. Plus, Jason gets way too happy reporting on the petty fight between Bob and Bob. ---------------- Support the show! After a two-year slowdown due to COVID, the Montreal International Jazz Festival came back this year. I had been there a couple times, in and out, as a musician. I went this year to cover the festival's full return for WBGO and The Third Story. When you're a musician at a festival like MJF, the job is actually pretty clear. You get to the gig, play the gig, pack up and go to the next gig. But what does a member of the press do in this situation? I was given a credential badge to wear with the word JOURNALISTE written on it and an assignment to “find the story.” Pretty quickly, a narrative started to reveal itself. Or rather, several narratives, all classics. The story of the young versus the old. The story about the past versus the present. And ultimately, the story of today's community of musicians, what's on their mind as they travel this Silk Road of Rhythm which is the summer jazz festival circuit —from Montreal to Marciac, from North Sea to Umbria and beyond. Conversations with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Bill Charlap, Scott Colley, Aaron Goldberg, Samara Joy, Allison Miller, Gregory Porter, and various concert-goers, festival organizers and locals all helped to fill in the story. Self-expression, politics, social media, technology, and conservationism were all part of the fabric, but the common thread between all of them was one of empathy and communion. “This Music,” as so many of the musicians call it, represents human potential. And humans are complicated beings. But at our core, we are social beings and that is reflected in this Montreal Jazz Festival experience. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios

Waste Management Open week is unlike any other on tour. It brings with it all sorts of craziness: sometimes good sometimes bad. This is a good reminder that sometimes things go wrong off the golf course and can potentially have a major impact on your finances if not protected correctly. As an athlete you are a public figure and for all the good that brings, it can also be a target on your back. From minor car accidents, someone getting hurt on your property, to dog bites and parties, if someone sees an opportunity to sue, they will. Make sure you understand how to protect yourself from unforeseen liabilities and keep your personal assets and business assets separate so that you maintain proper protection.
The stakes are higher on Tour: the competition, the opportunities, the money. With this comes even more of a need for expert advise and planning. As an elite athlete, you NEED and DESERVE to have a team that is built to serve elite athletes. Unfortunately, the existing landscape of financial institutions is built to serve the general public. In this episode we will explore what a wealth management team should be doing for you. You have a unique situation that requires unique solutions. You also have a unique opportunity to secure your financial future at an early age and have a large impact on your family and community. Make sure your wealth management team already understands the complexities that you face, and that their incentives align with your goals.

The single most important driver of your Net Worth is your physical ability to play golf. If you are hurt or sick and cannot play for an extended period, this has significant impact on your earnings. Not only does it impact your on-course earnings, but it can affect your endorsement deals as well. So why is disability insurance one of the most overlooked parts of players' financial structures? The Tour has a disability policy for players with certain exempt status. Though you travel all over the world during the season, where you spend time in your off weeks can impact your taxes. There can also be a lot of bad advice when it comes to your permanent residence that you might receive that typically does not work and can end up coming back to bite you later. There is also a lot of bad advice out there when it comes to what matters when proving where your state of residence is, that typically does not work and can end up coming back to bite you later. In this episode, Aaron breaks down a framework of the two biggest questions to ask yourself when deciding where you want to live, the differences between how your on-course and off-course earnings are taxed, and shares some of the implications to your taxes and your game that you may not have considered before.Episode HighlightsThe two big questions to consider when deciding where to live in the off season (00:56)The differences between on-course and off-course earnings (1:50)The important considerations in filing for residency (3:32)The details states look for when determining your residency (5:08)If you have kids – everything else with residency goes out the window (5:51)Why you shouldn't determine residency just on tax savings alone (6:04)The questions to consider when determining your permanent residence (7:30)
As an NFL player, you're in the highest tax rate. That means with your endorsement deals and appearances that 40-50% of that income is going to go to the IRS. Are you taking advantage of all the available opportunities to hold on to the income you're acquiring? This week, Zach is joined by Aaron Goldberg, CFP®, fellow AWM Capital colleague and former PGA, Korn Ferry, and Canada Tour golfer, to discuss some of the biggest tax savings that they've seen professional athletes miss out on.An important distinction on why the SEP IRA is inferior is the ability to do non-deductible IRA contributions and then later convert them to a Roth. You cannot directly contribute to a Roth because of income phaseouts but Roth accounts can grow tax-free and then be withdrawn with no taxes later. The Individual 401k can exist and does not affect the backdoor Roth strategy as it's commonly known. For athletes, the SEP IRA is an indication the advisor or CPA is not experienced with the unique circumstances and income of athletes. If you would like more detail check out our blog.Episode HighlightsThe Individual 401(k) and endorsement income (00:24)Deferring your 1099 income (1:17)The importance of a CFP® as a wealth advisor (2:24)Is a SEP IRA enough? (6:22)“But if your parents aren't professional athletes, they're financial advisor is probably not right for you because they don't know what to look for” (7:15)“What I think is almost equally dangerous is the mediocre advisors, the ones that don't know what they don't know.” (7:18)Your job as an athlete is to perform on the course – not to know everything that goes into your financial world (7:54)“when you hire people that have had that experience with other athletes, whether it be baseball players, whether it be football players, whether it be golfers, they know the pitfalls that come up and the ways that we can maximize net worth for our clients by capitalizing on their human capital and making sure that we take advantage of every opportunity that they have” (7:58)How different are golfers when it comes to taxes? (9:55)“You are the business, your game is the business. You're going to be the biggest driver of your financial future as a player” (11:29)What's the most important question I should be asking of my financial advisor to see if they're qualified? (13:29)

Pianist and philosopher Aaron Goldberg of the Yes! Trio walks us through their latest album "Groove Du Jour" and gives us compelling insight into both his music and studies.
Stephen Gordon's bio "I fell in love with all the sounds I heard as a child, so I pursued them" says Drummer/Pianist/Composer STEPHEN GORDON of Charlotte, N.C. - "Rather it was Gospel music at church, Funk and Motown with my Dad, Rock and Metal with my friends, Swing or European Classical literature with my peers and colleagues - I did it all." From the age of 4 years old, it became apparent that young Stephen would emerge into the world bringing forth sound, art, visual perspectives and living melodies to all that he pursued. Through the piano, taking lessons from the age of 5 with many teachers of different perspectives at the guidance of his parents and family, Stephen began playing the trumpet at age 12, which ventured into all brass, woodwinds, and eventually the drums and percussion. "They wanted to expand the Mass Choir at church, so my Dad and I became the rhythm section - That will always be my favorite rhythm section: Me and my Dad." From traditional and contemporary Gospel music, Stephen began sitting in and eventually gigging around Charlotte as a drummer and a keyboardist. "It was the Swing that I heard that I wanted to pursue. When I saw Terence Blanchard Sextet live at 15 years old, I said - Yeah, that's what I want to do; Swing." This path would lead Stephen to graduate high school from Northwest School of The Arts in Charlotte, N.C. and pursue touring and traveling internationally/nationally. "I got so many opportunities to travel with the choir, that when it came to gigging and touring with bands and my friends, I didn't see a difference; I was still going after that sound." These opportunities would lead to Stephen traveling and living in many different places and playing with some of the musicians and educators pushing the forefront of this music - pianist Ellis Marsalis, Jr., drummer Mike Clark, organist Joey DeFrancesco, trombonist Wayne Henderson, trombonist Fred Wesley, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr., percussionist Bill Summers, drummer/vibraphonist Jason Marsalis, alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson, vocalist Kurt Elling, pianist Aaron Goldberg, trumpeter Bobby Shew, trombonist Steve Turre, trumpeter Raymond Williams, Sr., bassist Roland Guerin, Poet Abidune Olyewole (The Last Poets), trombonist Tyrone Jefferson - to name a few. Stephen has performed in venues such as Tchaichovsky Hall in Moscow, Russia, The National Concert Hall in Taipei City, Taiwan, Opéra Bastille in Paris, France, The Kursk Philharmonia in Kursk, Russia, Lincoln Center in New York, New York, Ronnie Scott's in London, England, C Venues in Edinburgh, Scotland, The Village Vanguard, The Blue Note and The Jazz Standard in New York, New York, Blues Alley in DC, Babylon in Istanbul, Turkey, The North Sea Jazz Festival in Amsterdam, and many other great venues across the world. Beside playing and touring, recording and teaching have been prospects for Stephen to share in his talents and learn and grow as a musician and as a person. As Stephen resides in Charlotte, N.C., you may catch him all over the world on any given day, swinging and grooving. As Black Americans and their allies fight back against systemic racism and police brutality in marches all over the world, we were reminded of a piece we did in 2018 on the Disney film Song of the South. Many consider the movie racist - even for it's time. We take a look at the controversy with author Aaron Goldberg on this flashback to Things Disney Wishes You Would Forget. Mike Jeffers talking with special guest Bobby Selvaggio about his new release "Live at the Bop Stop". About Bobby Selvaggio Bobby Selvaggio is one of the leading alto saxophone voices on today's jazz scene. In the words of pianist Kenny Werner, “Bobby is among the best of players out there,” and legendary saxophonist Joe Lovano praises Bobby by calling him “one of the few young saxophonists on the scene today that captures you with his strong presence, focus, and sound.” Bobby, who grew up in the Cleveland area, earned his Bachelor of Music in Music Performance from Kent State University. He eventually moved to New York City and earned a master’s degree in jazz performance from the Manhattan School of Music. While in New York, Bobby studied with Joe Lovano, Bobby Watson, Dick Oatts, and Maria Schneider. After living in New York City and gigging around town at places like the Vanguard, Smalls, and Birdland for four years, Bobby decided to move back to Cleveland with his family. Northeast Ohio has become his home base of operations where Bobby has toured extensively throughout the US and Canada with various working ensembles and musicians. He has dedicated himself to keeping jazz alive in Cleveland and his passion for jazz education has led him to serve as Director of Jazz Studies at Kent State University. In addition to his work in jazz education, Bobby continues to expand his discography. His most recent recording is Quantum Man (Dot Time Records, 2016) which features a Jazz Quartet, String Quintet, Voice, and Percussion. As said by Downbeat (receiving 4 ½ stars): “Even at its most abstract, the highly textured, refreshingly unpredictable Quantum Man is persuasive and moving”. Quantum Man was also chosen “Best of 2017” by Downbeat. Follows is Short Stories (Origin Records, 2014) featuring Aaron Goldberg on the piano, Way of Being (Arabesque Records, 2013), Grass Roots Movement (Arabesque Records, 2011) featuring guitarist Nir Felder, and Modern Times (Arabesque Records, 2009). Modern Times featured Kenny Werner on piano and Sean Jones on trumpet. Bobby’s Unspoken Dialogue (Playscape Recordings, 2007) featured Kenny Werner, as well as Jamey Haddad on drums, Ben Street on bass, and Paul Tynan on trumpet; all musicians Bobby has actively performed and recorded with over the last 10 years. In addition to playing alto saxophone, Bobby also plays soprano saxophone, alto clarinet, flute, and is a composer, arranger, and jazz clinician. Bobby Selvaggio is an Eastman Saxophone Artist and a Jody Jazz Mouthpiece endorser.

I find Aaron's trios are the settings where his personality and voice shine brightest. In my interview Aaron, he talked about the depth of connection that forms between jazz musicians when they've played together for years and years and years, and it's that level of connection and interpersonal knowing that facilitates the kind of expression and improvisation that is so charged and captivating. It's that depth of familiarity which facilitates the sublime. The post The Jazz Session: Ode to Aaron Goldberg appeared first on Josh Summers.

(http://www.advanceyourart.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/IMG_1731-1_680px.jpg) This was one of my first episodes launched this summer and didn’t get as much attention I would have liked during the summer months. If you haven’t listed to this one yet it’s worth it. MEET BOB REYNOLDS: It’s a rare saxophonist who’s as comfortable in an arena full of rock fans as in an intimate jazz club. Bob Reynolds is a rare saxophonist. Reynolds spent years touring the world in John Mayer’s band, winning new fans with his solos on crowd favorites like “Vultures,” “Wheel,” “Gravity” and “Covered in Rain.” Watch his performances on YouTube and you’ll see hundreds of accolades from admiring fans—not a normal occurrence for a saxophonist in a rock band. Reynolds’ partnership with Mayer reminds many of Sting’s collaborations with Branford Marsalis in the 1980s. Both he and Mayer are big fans of that band. Reynolds has recorded and performed with everyone from Usher, Josh Groban and the Jonas Brothers to Amos Lee, Willie Nelson and Nellie McKay. He calls himself a “melody architect” and refuses to be boxed in by conventional genre labels. A child of the 80s, Reynolds’ music is a blend of his early influences (Sting, Bruce Hornsby, Tears for Fears), R&B and soul (Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder), and jazz (Stan Getz, Joshua Redman, Chris Potter). At the same time as he’s been touring the world to packed stadiums and playing with A-list superstars, Reynolds has stayed true to his jazz roots with performances in clubs across the U.S. Three of his five albums were recorded live with a who’s who of the jazz and rock worlds, including keyboardist Aaron Goldberg, guitarist Mike Moreno, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Keith Carlock, who’s toured with both Sting and Mayer. Reynolds’ records reflect his affinity for the jazz tradition at the same time as they display his skill with pop music. He makes the music he wants without compromise. For Reynolds, music is about communication with the listeners. The title of his latest recording, Somewhere in Between, suggests his ability to cross genres. The album features jazz heavyweights Eric Harland on drums and Aaron Parks on piano, along with keyboardist Oli Rockberger of Mister Barrington and, on two tracks, John Mayer. It’s a seamless and fearless blend of jazz, blues, rock and pop. Inventive. Unconventional. An instantly recognizable player with his own musical vision who still finds a way to fit in no matter what the situation. As a leader or a band member, Reynolds is focused on melody, connection and emotion. Say it again: Bob Reynolds is a rare saxophonist.
My guest is doing good things and hustling to make it in a tough business. Show business. We go deep into some heavy tactics for script writing and making movies at any level. This is perfect for anyone out there looking to take their creativity to the next level. I'm always fascinated with the granular view of how high functioning people actually DO what they do. Chris Jay is a musician, songwriter, screenwriter, producer, actor, journalist and podcaster best known as the frontman and founder of the rock band, Army of Freshmen and for co-writing and acting in the comedy film, The Bet. Upon graduation, he moved, by himself, to Ventura, California where he formed the band, Army of Freshmen in 1997. Army of Freshmen are still active and have played over 1,500 shows in 43 states and 11 countries and released 5 full-length albums. Jay himself has been involved in the writing, producing and recording of over 1,500 songs, with several of those appearing in films and on television. Chris Jay and fellow Army of Freshmen member, Aaron Goldberg wrote the screenplay for the full-length comedy film, The Bet which was released on July 26, 2016. Jay and Goldberg co-produced they film under their production company, Goldy Jay Productions. Their second film, Wedding or Not is currently in pre-production and scheduled to begin filming in the summer of 2017. - Jay's Wikipedia MxPx.com for show and Merch info.
