Episode 106 Electronic Music of Dune Playlist Toto, “Main Title,” “Robot Fight,” and “Dune (Desert Theme)” from Main Title / Robot Fight / Dune (Desert Theme) (1984 Polydor). A single produced from the soundtrack of the David Lynch film version of Dune (1984). Toto, with its big synthesizers, created most of the soundtrack, although Brian Eno, Roger Eno and Daniel Lanois had one track (included later in this podcast). Bass, David Hungate; Drums, Percussion, Jeff Porcaro; Guitar, Steve Lukather; Keyboards, David Paich, Steve Porcaro. 6:36 David Matthews, “Part I: Arrakis,” “Part II: Sandworms,” “Part III: Song Of The Bene Gesserit,” “Part IV: Muad'Dib” from Dune (1977 CTI Records). Arranged by David Matthews and produced by Creed Taylor for his CTI jazz label, this was an extended work inspired by the novel by Frank Herbert. Cliff Carter plays the solo synth (mini-Moog?) on the first track and other places. The work is jazz with bits of electronic music blended into the instrumentation. It remains an interesting artifact partly because of the legal problems CTI faced once they released the album. Because CTI had not secured writer Frank Herbert's authorization to use his novel Dune as the thematic center piece for the album, Herbert filed a law suit against CTI and won, forcing the label to delete it from catalog. For this reason, that interesting album was never reissued in the USA. Enjoy. Alto Saxophone, David Sanborn; Bass, Mark Egan; Bass Trombone, Dave Taylor; Concertmaster, Sanford Allen; Drums, Andy Newmark, Steve Gadd; Flute, Piccolo Flute, Dave Tofani; Guitar, Eric Gale, Hiram Bullock; Keyboards, Cliff Carter; Oboe, Clarinet, Lew Del Gatto; Percussion, Gordon Gottlieb, Sue Evans; Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Grover Washington, Jr.; Trombone, Jerry Chamberlain*, Sam Burtis, Tom Malone, Wayne Andre; Trumpet, Flugelhorn, Burt Collins, Jim Bossy, Joe Shepley, John Gatchell, Jon Faddis, Lew Soloff, Randy Brecker; Vocals, Googie Coppola. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, June 1977. The first side is the Dune suite, the second side features interpretations of other sci fi film themes (Silent Running, Star Wars, etc.). 20:29 Frank Herbert reading Dune from Dune, The Banquet Scene (1977 Caedmon Records) combined with a track by Alan R. Splet, “Space Travel W/ Changing Choral Textures” (2003 Sub Rosa) from An Anthology Of Noise & Electronic Music / Second A-Chronology 1936-2003. The recording of Herbert was made at the height of the Dune craze, the late 1970s. When David Lynch made his film for release in 1984, he was working with Splet who is not credited by whom may have contributed some electronic and ambient sounds. This track appears to confirm that and I've combined it with the Herbert reading. 5:07 Brian Eno, Roger Eno and Daniel Lanois, “Prophecy Theme” from Dune (Original Soundtrack Recording) (1984 Polydor). This little track was the only one that remained of Eno's contributions to the Dune soundtrack, although he reportedly composed an entire movie's worth of music for the film. Some was used as incidental music. 4:21 Zheani, “The Litany Against Fear” from Eight (2018 Sleepcvlt). Cassette release from this Australian rapper, electronic musician, model and actress. This is a famous quote from Herbert's Dune and seemed fitting to have it represented by a musician for the podcast. 0:36 Klaus Schulze, “Dune” from Dune (1979 Brain). Yes, Schulze, too, was infected with the Dune craze and created this ambitious 30-minute work to acknowledge it. This is a truly lovely electronic work from those days when Schulze was largely still working analog synthesis, and synthesize voices and orchestral sounds, much like his earlier album X. The cello is played by Wolfgang Tiepold, produced by and all keyboards by Klaus Schulze. The first side comprises the piece called Dune and the second side features an unrelated work with vocals by Arthur Brown. An intriguing album all around! 30:05 Graeme Revell & The City Of Prague Philharmonic, “Seduction” from Frank Herbert's Dune (Original Soundtrack From The Sci-Fi Channel Mini Series) (2001 GNP Cresendo). Composed by Graeme Revell; executive producer, Neil Norman; orchestra, chorus, The City Of Prague Philharmonic. This is the soundtrack for a Sci Fi channel mini-series back in 2001. The music is primarily orchestral, being performed in the Czech Republic and arranged by Neil Norman, Hollywood veteran of science fiction films. But Revell did compose it and there are a few tracks, such as the one featured here, that have clearly electronic elements that stand out. 1:51 Grimes, “Caladan” from Geidi Primes (2011 No Pain in Pop). Grimes' first album was a concept album based on Frank Herbert's novel Dune and David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation of the book. This track is about the fictional home planet of the Atreides, the protagonist clan in the novel. Produced by, written by, played by Grimes. She used relatively simple sounds, overdubs, and interesting vocal mixes to tell these tales. 2:23 Kurt Stenzel, “Parallel World” (1:42), “Parallel World (Outro)” (1:04), “Leap Of Faith” (0:43), “Time And Space” (2:04), “Optical World” (2:56), “Nebula” (2:26), and “Invitation” (excerpt) from Jodorowsky's Dune (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (2014 Cinewax). This is a bit of a side-hustle because Alejandro Jodorowsky's much hyped film version of Dune, which he sought to make in the 1970s, does not exist. It is one of the most famous movies that never existed. Still, the Chilean-French film director, producer, composer, actor stuck with the idea for quite some time until the David Lynch movie was produced in the 1980s and sucked all of the available Dune oxygen out of the room. But Jodorowsky's passion for the project inspired others, including guitarist and synthesist Stenzel who produced this soundtrack to a 2014 documentary about Jodorowsky and the ill-fated project. Stenzel composed music inspired by the book. This double LP has 33 tracks and I focused on a selection of connected synth tracks from the first album. Moog Source, CZ-101s, Roland Juno 6, toy Concertmate organ, Ninendo DS, voice, Kurt Stenzel. 11:56 Klause Schulze, “Side E—"Der Hauch Des Lebens (The Breath of Life) Pt #1” from Deus Arrakis (2022 SPV Recordings). Dune remained a lifelong source of fascination for Schulze. This, his final album, was also inspired by the novel he loved so well. This is a three-LP set, but the first LP is single-sided. Because of his ill health, Schulze knew that this might be his final project. In the liner notes he wrote directly to his fans, saying, “Thank you for your great support over all these years. This is for you! May the spice be with you. Always.” Recorded and written by Klaus Schulze; Cello, Wolfgang Tiepold; Voice, Eva-Maria Kagermann. 16:24 Han Zimmer, “Arrakis” from The Art And Soul Of Dune (Companion Book Music) (2021 WaterTower Music). Zimmer composed the soundtrack for the Denis Villeneuve released in 2021. Villeneuve has praised Zimmer's work on the film and that he had spent,"months and months creating new instruments, defining, creating, and seeking new sounds, pushing the envelope." In addition to a soundtrack for the film itself, Zimmer released two companion releases that provide an extended listen to the sounds and experiments that were created for the project. Three albums were released for the film by WaterTower Music, including The Dune Sketchbook (Music from the Soundtrack), Dune (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), and The Art and Soul of Dune on September 3, September 17, and October 22, 2021, respectively. This work is from the reading companion to the film. 13:28 Opening background music: Hans Zimmer, “The Shortening Of The Way” from The Dune Sketchbook (Music from the Soundtrack) (2021 WaterTower Music). This track is from a companion 2-CD set that accompanied the actual soundtrack. Zimmer called these sketches and they represent his sound experiments as he formulated the music for the film. This grand combination of acoustic instruments and synth sounds from Zimmer's private studio is stunning in its scope and virtuosity and highly recommended. Synth programming by Hans Zimmer. 11:14 Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. See my companion blog that I write for the Bob Moog Foundation. For additional notes, please see my blog, Noise and Notations.
Tony Monaco began his keyboard life at age eight, on the accordion. When he was twelve, his destiny as a jazz organist was sealed when he first heard Jimmy Smith. An enthusiastic student, Tony began working in Jazz clubs as a teenager in his native Columbus, Ohio, guided by local organ gurus Hank Marr and Don Patterson. For further inspiration, he studiously absorbed the mastery of Jimmy McGriff, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Charles Earland, Jack McDuff, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. All would play a role in the development of his musical palette. On Tony's sixteenth birthday, his prayers were answered. He received an encouraging phone call from Jimmy Smith, who soon became his Mentor/Teacher. Four years later, Jimmy Smith invited Tony to play at his club in California--a peak lifetime experience for Tony. From 1980 to 2006, Tony stood by his family businesses and married to have three daughters, while running Monaco's Palace Italian restaurant for ten years while performing weekly in the lounge. Tony then entered the food brokerage industry peaking towards Torchbearer status with SYSCO Foods. Always inspired by music, Tony then went to work as an assistant Broadcast producer for a prominent ad agency learning his production skills and playing gigs at night to continue supporting his family. After graduating from college with a B.S.B.A. from Franklin University in 1989, Tony's occupation changed again to supervisor of Monaco Concrete (“my Father needed a good manager and my daughters were getting close to going to college!”). Tony now enjoys and concentrates on all his musical energies flourishing ultimately as he pursues his passions. In April 2000, Tony met fellow jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco, who offered to produce a debut CD for him. This collaboration resulted in the critically acclaimed "Burnin Grooves”. The international success of the recording served as the catalyst for regional and national tours. This success was followed by two more releases for Summit Records that received critical acclaim and significant sales, charting in the Jazzweek Top 10. In September 2003, Summit Records released "A New Generation”, a unique recording featuring both Tony's and Joey DeFrancesco's Trios. They recorded the project using two "Hammond-Suzuki New B3's" as Tony was awarded a major endorsement role with Hammond and Suzuki. As Tony's reputation has grown, he has been blessed to play with some of the greatest musicians in jazz, including Mel Lewis, Lewis Nash, Red Holloway, Plas Johnson, Sonny Fortune, Jon Faddis, Adam Nussbaum, Bruce Forman, Harvey Mason, Chester Thompson (drummer) Herlin Riley, Matt Wilson, Jeff Clayton, Terrell Stafford, Eric Alexander, Late Bobby Durham, Russell Malone, Peter Bernstein, Paul Bollenback, Bruce Forman, Kevin Mahogany, Victor Lewis, Pat Martino, Fareed Haque, and even George Benson. An ardent student of the organ, it's no surprise that Tony is an accomplished teacher as well. In addition to private students, classes and clinics, Tony has produced a series of instructional DVDs titled "Playing Jazz Hammond" that have quickly become indispensable for any serious student of the organ. Tony teaches Lessons online with a system he created giving lessons one on one online to anyone from anywhere around the globe! Presently, Tony maintains a busy schedule touring, including festival appearances, clinics, and workshops In 2007 he appeared on the cover of Keyboard Magazine. In April 2012, Tony released "Celebration Life * Love * Music, a two-disc set of all originals as he continues to Celebrate his Musical gifts and shares his skills with everyone. Tony's drive as an innovator and missionary continues to carry forward his passion for the Hammond Organ. Now Executive Producer of the Summit Records subsidiary Chicken Coup Records, he has recorded and released CDs for several undiscovered organists around the globe, and his role as an educator has allowed him to spread and cultivate many new hopefuls to the art of the jazz organ. In 2014 Tony released Furry Slippers with fellow guitarist Fareed Haque and Drummer Greg Fundis! Topping the Jazz and College charts and gaining several reviews! Tony continues his mission to raise awareness and appreciation of the jazz organ and its importance in genres as diverse as traditional Gospel, RnB, and Modern Jazz. He is formulating new strategies and record deals using his network through Chicken Coup Records to help himself and his peers and students advance in this ever-changing music market and utilize new technologies and markets. Tony is a vital source of musical experience, knowledge, and humility ready, willing, and able !!! In 2017, Tony celebrated a special anniversary, celebrating 50 years as a musician! In January 2019, Tony released his 11th Internation release "The Definition of Insanity" on his Chicken Coup Records label. He will be recording his second venture with Drummer great Steve Smith and Guitarist Vinny Valentino as Groove Blue Trio Tours Russia and Europe!

Nabaté's debut album called, 'Eclectic Excursions' dropped in the Summer of 2018 and until that point, he's had a glorious career journey. During his high school years, Nabaté represented the fifth generation of jazz for the preview of the Louis Armstrong Archives, with trumpet greats Dr. Donald Byrd, "Doc" Cheatham, "Dizzy" Gillespie, Jimmy Owens, Jon Faddis and Wynton Marsalis. Nabaté also appeared in a Coca-Cola commercial, directed by John Singleton and produced by Roy Eaton. While attending Eastman, Nabaté was a featured soloist with the Rochester Pops Orchestra. Nabaté also participated in the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz summer program at Aspen Snowmass and its Jazz Gala at the Kennedy Center. He went on to receive his BM from the Eastman School of Music and his MA from New York University. Nabaté has performed, toured and/or recorded with unique artists Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def), Christian McBride, Kenny Lattimore, Philip Bailey, Fantasia, Jeffrey Osborne, Jill Scott, Robert Glasper, Dianne Reeves, José James, Savion Glover, Gregory Porter, Freda Payne, Shareefa, Oliver Lake, Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Steve Wilson, Muhal Richard Abrams, Matthew Shipp, Charli Persip, Mike Longo, Uri Caine, Buster Williams, Grady Tate, Jay Hoggard, Holt McCallany, the Mingus Big Band, and the José Limon Dance Company. He composed a solo double bass composition called 'Lessons', which was premiered by world-renowned double bassist James VanDemark at Louisiana State University. Nabaté also received a commission from the Festival of New Trumpet Music to compose and premiere a new piece which he entitled, 'We Need Unity in the Community'. Nabaté provided private trumpet instruction to the actor Rob Brown for his role as trumpeter Delmond Lambreaux on the HBO series, 'Treme'. Nabaté was part of both of Christian McBride Big Band's Grammy-winning albums, 'The Good Feeling' (2012) and 'Bringin' It' (2018) as well as the band's performance at the White House for the last concert under President Barack Obama's administration. He has composed five music scores for short films as well as contributing original music to Amos Poe's innovative film, 'Empire II'. He recently completed a score for his first feature called, 'The Rhythm in Blue'. Also, a sports trivia expert, Nabaté excelled on TV gameshows, ESPN's Stumb The Schwab and Crackle/NBC Sports' Sports Jeopardy. Nabaté Isles' Eclectic Excursions featuring the joined talents of: Nabaté Isles - Trumpet Alex Han - Alto and Soprano Saxophone David Gilmore - Guitar Theo Hill - Keyboards Brad Jones - Bass Rudy Royston - Drums Special Guests: Alita Moses - Vocals Michael Mayo - Vocals Find Nabaté Isles via social media: Instagram: @nsi.universal Twitter: @NabateIslesSMTA Facebook: www.facebook.com/NabateIslesTrumpet The trumpeter Nabaté Isles recently released his debut album, “Eclectic Excursions,” and it lives up to its title. Mr. Isles has worked most often as a side musician for artists across hip-hop, jazz and R&B, and his own record manages to throw it all together — making room along the way for a few guest singers and rappers — while keeping a firm center. Playing with a quintet, Mr. Isles started off with “Minute Pieces of Wozzeck,” a trippy, motivic original composed around a set of 12-tone harmonies from Alban Berg’s experimental opera, “Wozzeck.” As Adam Klipple’s organ and Joshua Crumbly’s bass hit a stopped-up, two-chord pattern, Mr. Isles retorted with a circular phrase. The guitarist David Gilmore ran snaky improvisations around them, leading your ear gently astray until the rhythm section dropped decisively into a thrashing rock beat. Mr. Isles and the soprano saxophonist Ian Young played in wet blasts of harmony, and Mr. Isles drove headlong into a rugged solo. He pushed hard, leaning into the song’s screwball-fusion vibe but maintaining a measured sense of swing. Midway through the set, the rapper Elzhi — a onetime member of Slum Village, and a guest on the album — guested on two songs, and the band switched comfortably to a radiant, festive mode. Then the vocalist Alita Moses came on to sing “Find Your Light,” a standout from “Eclectic Excursions,” with a strong redolence of Esperanza Spalding’s dreamy neo-soul side. Over a mid-tempo groove, Ms. Moses sang the song’s lyrics of invitation with acrobatic poise, moving deliberately at cloud altitude. Mr. Isles responded with a solo of sharp bursts and grounded rumbles, filling some of the vertical space in the atmosphere below her. Episode 351 October 21st moon in Sagittarius. Dizzy Gillespie was born on October 21 1917 and his contributions to jazz were huge. One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time (some would say the best), Gillespie was such a complex player that his contemporaries ended up copying Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead, and it was not until Jon Faddis' emergence in the 1970s that Dizzy's style was successfully recreated. Somehow, Gillespie could make any "wrong" note fit, and harmonically he was ahead of everyone in the 1940s, including Charlie Parker. Unlike Bird, Dizzy was an enthusiastic teacher who wrote down his musical innovations and was eager to explain them to the next generation, thereby insuring that bebop would eventually become the foundation of jazz. Dizzy Gillespie was also one of the key founders of Afro-Cuban (or Latin) jazz, adding Chano Pozo's conga to his orchestra in 1947, and utilizing complex poly-rhythms early on. The leader of two of the finest big bands in jazz history, Gillespie differed from many in the bop generation by being a masterful showman who could make his music seem both accessible and fun to the audience. With his puffed-out cheeks, bent trumpet (which occurred by accident in the early '50s when a dancer tripped over his horn), and quick wit, Dizzy was a colorful figure to watch. A natural comedian, Gillespie was also a superb scat singer and occasionally played Latin percussion for the fun of it, but it was his trumpet playing and leadership abilities that made him into a jazz giant. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/akacloudette/message
EPISODE 1 A Fresh and Uniquely Human Perspective on Autism Play the Episode… …and Continue the Discussion Do you have a book or podcast club? If so, you may use this discussion guide to facilitate a conversation about this episode. 1. Barry coined the term “Uniquely Human” to de-pathologize and reframe the way we understand autistic individuals and the autistic experience. In your opinion, does “Uniquely Human” help to achieve these goals of seeing autism in a different way? If so, why, and if not, why not? 2. Barry and Dave see the Uniquely Human Podcast as a neurotypical/autistic co-equal partnership, as they each bring unique experiences and skills to the podcast. How is this approach emblematic of what we are learning from the neurodiversity movement? What are the potential benefits of such a partnership for listeners? 3. Barry and Dave discuss the concept that autism is best understood as a “shared human experience”. How does this perspective contrast with more traditional views of autism, and how can this change your attitude and actions? Featuring Show Notes Join Barry and Dave for the debut of Uniquely Human: The Podcast, as they deeply explore the broader meaning of the phrase, “uniquely human.” In this hour-long special episode, you’ll hear Barry describe how a lifetime of work has informed the necessary evolution of humankind’s relationship with autism and neurodiversity.

Mr. Isles released his album“Eclectic Excursions” in July. Jon Faddis began playing the trumpet at the age of eight, inspired by an appearance of Louis Armstrong on the Ed Sullivan Show. Three years later, his trumpet teacher Bill Catalano (an alumnus of the Stan Kenton Band) turned Jon on to Dizzy Gillespie, with whom he subsequently appeared at the famed Jazz Workshop in San Francisco. Two days before his 18th birthday, Jon joined the Lionel Hampton Band as a featured soloist, and in the same year was invited to sit in with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band on one of their regular Monday night sessions at the Village Vanguard. Mr. Faddis toured and recorded with this band for four years and also studied at the Manhattan School of Music during this period. Since then, Jon Faddis has become known throughout the world as one of the most innovative and inspiring jazz trumpeters of our time. He has an unfailing commitment to the education of young musicians and frequently conducts clinics and master classes to help the next generation of jazz musicians. In 1999, Jon was appointed Artist-in-Residence in the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College, State University of New York, where he teaches in both the Brass and Jazz Programs. Larry is in high demand as a jazz bassist in Chicago, performing regularly for decades at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, and he teaches at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Enjoy! About Larry Born on Chicago’s south side, Larry Gray is considered by many to be one of jazz music’s finest double bassists. His impressive versatility and uncommon musical curiosity keep him in demand as both a leader and sideman. Larry began his musical studies at the age of five when his father brought home an accordion and introduced him to his first teacher. Invigorated by this study, Larry added the guitar to his arsenal and studied piano seriously for many years thereafter. It was not until he was in his twenties that he decided to switch to the double bass. Larry went on to study classical music extensively, eventually adding the cello to his long list of loved instruments. His principal teachers were Joseph Guastafeste, longtime principal bassist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and cellist Karl Fruh, a highly regarded soloist and teacher. Under Mr. Fruh's guidance, he received bachelors and masters degrees in cello performance from the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University. As a classical musician, Larry played several seasons with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, including a year as principal bass. He worked on many occasions with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under master conductors Erich Leinsdorf, Rafeal Kubelik, Carlo Maria Guilini, and Sir George Solti. He also was the featured double bassist with Lyric Opera for the world premiere of the opera Amistad. Larry is an arranger and composer whose work has been widely recognized as uniquely melodic and exceptionally refined. His discography includes 1,2, 3,..., on Chicago Sessions, the solo bass record, Gravity, One Look, and Solo + Quartet, all on Graywater Records, as well as the Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson collaborations Meant to Be and Simple Pleasures.
