William Pullen is a psychotherapist and founder of Dynamic Running Therapy. This reimagines the traditional talk therapy model of a client sitting on a couch talking with a therapist to incorporate movement, nature, and the outdoors into the healing process. He is the author of "Run for Your Life (UK)/Running with Mindfulness (USA)" and has developed an app also called Dynamic Running Therapy that you can check out wherever you are in the world. He is a TEDx speaker who has worked with Adidas, Asics, and Novartis, along with being featured by Vogue, GQ, The Times, Huffington post, etc. It is easy to think that everyone has everything together, especially coaching and therapy. But we are all humans just working through life to the best of our ability. William went through many difficult, dark times personally to become a psychotherapist. I really like this conversation because he is open and honest about the struggles and challenges that he is still working through. You can check out a lot of helpful tips and resources for how to incorporate therapy into your own runs at his website here...Website:Dynamic Running Therapy I am currently opening up a very limited number of spots for 1-on-1 clients at the start of the new year. Today's podcast guest, William Pullen, is a London-based psychotherapist, TEDx speaker and author who has developed a unique treatment method called "Dynamic Running Therapy" (DRT). DRT has been described as a "revolutionary method" and as "a radical new approach to mindfulness".According to William, movement combined with talking exploits something deep within our DNA and DRT is based on this concept. DRT helps people work through issues like anxiety, depression, anger management or decision making.Listen to my chat with William to hear the inspiring story of how he left the dizzying world of alcohol, gambling and other destructive pursuits to one of health, wellbeing and inner peace. He achieved this U turn with a combination of running and psychotherapy and then chose to study psychotherapy himself as he was simultaneously so inspired and healed by it. With a background in philosophy and a deep appreciation of the Buddhist concept of mindfulness, William has a unique perspective on the human mind - for any philosophy buffs, William throws in some references to Descartes and the Cartesian Split.William has also written a book about DRT, "Run For Your Life: Mindful Running for a Happy Life" (published in the United States as "Running with Mindfulness") and here is a link to my review of his book where you can purchase it via Amazon: https://amandaswellbeingpodcast.com/run-for-your-life/You can connect with William via any of the following channels:Website: http://dynamicrunningtherapy.co.ukInstagram: d_runningtherapyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dynamicrunningtherapyTwitter: @pullentherapyDRT App: available on Apple App storeTEDx talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq6393AreD4
William is a London-based psychotherapist, author and app developer. He is the founder of Dynamic Running Therapy (DRT), a psychotherapeutic approach which incorporates running. H is book "Running with Mindfulness" published by Penguin, is in 11 countries. The Dynamic Running Therapy appis available on iOS. From his own struggle after a long-term relationship ended, leaving him depressed and withdrawn from life, William learned something. He started running with a friend, and found that these runs helped him work through what he was facing and processing (or not processing). He came to learn why running was so helpful, and created an approach, he calls Dynamic Running Therapy, through that. He shares his story and what he learned with us in this episode of the show. Key Points from the Episode with William Pullen: William is a psychotherapist in London who, about a decade ago, was going through a tough time and turned to therapy himself. At the same time, he started running with a friend, and realized that he was getting such emotional benefit from the running, too. That lead to creating a program that combines the two into his book and methodology, Dynamic Running Therapy. In his situation, he was in a failing relationship too long. He notes how hanging on can drag you down and hurt you further. Then the relationship ends when you’re at your weakest, and it crushes more than if you had acted sooner. He found himself in the throes of depression, and had the presence of mind to recognize that he needed help. We got into why running seems to be so helpful. William had a couple of key reasons. First, running is rhythmic, which has a calming and almost hypnotic effect. Second, because it absorbs so much of your energy, it quiets the distractive power of the mind, making it easier to focus on what matters that you are trying to work through. Dynamic Running Therapy is about running with a set of questions to work through. He tends to start with a 5-10 minute grounding process, which has four steps. First is to take in what’s happening in your body. Then, what’s happening around you (smells, sounds, etc). Third, scan how you’re feeling. Finally, ask yourself what you want from the session. Often we aren’t focused enough when we try to work on things, so this helps bring us to a place of focus. William believes we live in an age of disembodiment. We are focusing our energy in things like social media and work that no longer fits into 9-5 hours. Running helps bring us back. When we run, our body registers us as going from passive to active, which shifts our brain’s processing. This allows us to work on problems differently. William sees this as one of the reasons we go into a run with lots of questions or problems in our head, and miraculously, we seem to have them resolved when we’re done running. I had to ask if treadmills count since the experience is so different from running outdoors. While it may be different, or not as good, something is better than nothing, so treadmills can still work. The key is for making that treadmill experience as open and clear as possible. For example, not having closed in walls around you, or a screen staring you in the face, distracting you. We get stuck in the world through repetition and rigidity. Breaking through this comes from getting moving. The more free we are with that, the better. So William prefers getting outdoors, exposing yourself to something different and interesting (he threw out African drumming, which I’ve used myself to great effect). He posed a great challenge to people. Do you have too muchorder in your life or not enough? Having too much can be as problematic as not enough as it can hold us back. Find balance. William Pullen is a Fully Qualified Psychotherapist in Britain and is the inventor of Dynamic Running Therapy. DRT is fundamentally the linking of movement (walking/running) with traditional talk therapy. It replaces the static atmosphere of the therapist office and allows therapist and client to move their bodies and create healing.
‘You don’t know what you can be, just take the first step and see where the journey takes you. Sooner or later, you will feel better ‘ Dr. Shan Hussain is discussing the benefits of dynamic running and movement therapy with William Pullen, psychotherapist and specialist in dynamic running therapy. They discuss the importance of movement for all humans and the ways we can all move actively towards feeling better and achieving empowerment and confidence. KEY TAKEAWAYS What drew you towards running as a therapy? Running is something you can do almost anywhere at any time; it is amongst the most accessible of all exercises. There are many proven studies showing how running can be beneficial to our health. The physical body is designed to move, but with the advent and continuing progress of technology we have less reasons to move. Depressed people develop rigidity about themselves, it’s part of the condition and the opposite of moving. If you want to feel better, get moving. It can be anything from intellectual movement, emotional movement, musical movement or physical movement. It’s important to have social connections around us that help us take the next step. I’ve developed empathy walks and runs – this technique focuses on one person talking for ten minutes whilst the other individual simply listens. If you give someone a chance to talk uninterrupted, then it’s likely that you will find out the reason for their emotions and their validity. It's about taking the time. Tell me about your day to day work in psychotherapy? I have my practice as a dynamic running therapist, this is therapy but on the move, its approach is fundamentally humanistic so there is a focus on the quality of the relationship between the therapist and the client. There are many, many upsides to doing therapy outdoors, when you take people and move with them from A to B. It’s not just the movement - there is a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. I also have a regular practice where I see adults facing challenges across areas such as depression and low confidence. No matter how stuck you are, no matter how big your dream is, don’t be intimidated by the journey to get better or to get to where you want to be. All you need to do is something very simple, just take the first step and keep moving no matter what it looks like. BEST MOMENTS ‘There are lots of proven ways about how running is beneficial to our health’ ‘The only things that don’t move in life are dead things’ ‘It’s great to talk, but it's also about the action you take’ ‘We can craft the world into whatever we want it to be’ ‘Just one simple healthy activity incorporated into our daily lives can help transform our emotional well-being’ ABOUT OUR GUEST William Pullen B.Sc., M.A., MBACP (Accred) is a London-based psychotherapist, author, and founder of Dynamic Running Therapy. In our expansion into other areas of wellbeing, physical health has taken a backseat and it’s become taboo to talk about it as part of our wellness efforts. We’ve forgotten how important our physical health is and most importantly, the positive impact things like exercise have on our mental and emotional health. After all, wellbeing is an interconnected concept. So, why not combine two good things for our wellbeing – exercise and therapy? Today’s guest is William Pullen, founder of Dynamic Running Therapy, a psychotherapist and author. His passion is for getting people moving, a subject he speaks about in his TEDx talk "Movement is Medicine and his book, Run for Your Life. William practices Integrative therapy in London and specializes in the treatment of depression, anxiety, problems of self-esteem and confidence, and substance abuse. This interview starts off with what he refers to as his meltdown and he got past his depression. William tells us how he came up with the term and practice of Dynamic Running Therapy, what it is and its benefits. He then leaves us with a tangible tip involving an interesting concept called an empathy walk. One of the keys to healing from trauma, overcoming anxiety, working through depression, addictions, and virtually any other struggle is figuring out a way to get what's in our heads, out of our heads in a way that feels safe, validating, and in compliance with who we are as individuals. By doing so we begin to chip away at the self-shame that so often comes when battling any mental health challenge.By showing up authentically, to ourselves and the world, even in the wake of extreme events, we gain confidence and resilience. We learn that what happened to us, does not define our future, and the struggles of our past only have the power that we allow them to have. This certainly does not mean that we should try to rush through recovery, or feel as though we should just get over what's happened. Instead, simply understand that, in time, we can learn to live and thrive in our present life, rather than being held back by the very thoughts, feelings, and coping strategies which served us for a time, but are now keeping us stuck. My guest on this episode of the podcast, is someone who has developed a very unique approach to work through those very struggles that no longer serve us. William Pullen, creator of Dynamic Running Therapy, is a practicing therapist in the U.K., working with clients not only utilizing DRT, but also integrative psychotherapy in areas such as : substance abuse, emotional abuse, anxiety, relationship struggles, career change, life transition, self-esteem, depression, and more.Integrative Psychotherapy aims to facilitate wholeness between the feeling, behavioural, cognitive, and physiological levels of functioning – in other words the whole person. This is done in part through looking at aspects of the self that you may be unaware of and making them conscious. Together we can look at the life you want for yourself and how to achieve it. Change takes time and cannot be rushed. I believe in providing focus and space, not pressure. I believe in removing expectation, often routed in the demands of others, and instead aligning ourselves with what we feel inside. Change comes about by clearing a path to where we want to be, not forcing our way through to it.I work in a way that is warm, empathic, non-judgemental, and direct. I am not a therapist who will stare at you in silence. I also believe there is a place for humour in therapy. My work draws on many theoretical orientations and styles. Because each person is unique, my work is different with every person that I see. I tailor my approach to help you and your individual needs. I offer a comfortable and confidential space where you can look at your life free of expectation or judgement.Dynamic Running Therapy includes the use of a smart phone app, and William's book, Running with Mindfulness: Dynamic Running Therapy (DRT) to Improve Low-mood, Anxiety, Stress, and Depression.
