It can sometimes be hard to share the gospel with a culture that seems to speak a language different from the one we speak at church. But Jesus is calling us to do exactly that. As an evangelist and church planter, Shauna Pilgreen has firsthand experience translating Jesus to a culture desperate to hear his truth. On today's episode of Unapologetic, Julianne sits down with Shauna to break it all down for us. Shauna and her husband lead Epic Church in San Francisco, one of the most secular and diverse cities in the country. Given that experience, Shauna knows exactly what it takes to translate the gospel in a way anyone can understand, whether that's to your Uber driver, the barista at your favorite coffee shop, or—sometimes most challenging of all—your own family and friends. During this candid conversation, Julianne asks Shauna to share some of the ways Christians speak our own language (that we may not even be aware of), where we can start when it comes to translating Jesus to those around us, and practical tips for overcoming awkwardness or discomfort when it comes to talking about our faith. This whole episode is filled with incredible stories from Shauna of the ways she's seen Jesus move in the lives of those you'd least expect. We're all called to share the good news of Jesus with whoever we meet—this encouraging conversation will equip you with the tools needed to do exactly that! Shauna's newest book—Translating Jesus—is available everywhere now! Connect with her on Instagram or learn more at shaunapilgreen.com.
Stephanie here! I had the amazing opportunity to chat with Shauna Pilgreen, co-leader of EPIC Church in San Francisco and author of the powerful book "Translating Jesus." Shauna Pilgreen shares her background, experiences in San Francisco, and her insights on approaching evangelism in fresh, relatable ways. The episode also touches on the dynamics of holiday gatherings and the importance of sharing personal stories of faith, empathy, and understanding. We delved into the challenges of sharing faith in today's culture and the concept of being "bilingual" in understanding both our current culture and the culture of scripture and faith. Navigating holiday gatherings with diverse beliefs was a pivotal part of our discussion, emphasizing the importance of sharing and listening to personal faith stories at the table. Shauna's insights on becoming "bilingual" in evangelism and the global relevance of translating Jesus for all people in different contexts left me truly inspired. We highlighted the transformative power of listening in ministry and the need for Christians to remain culturally relevant while rooted in their faith. We also talked about how the Alpha course is transforming lives and providing non-threatening ways to share Christ and understand faith in today's world. Our conversation culminated with focusing on believers' faith, those uncertain about faith, and encouragement to be a light during the holiday season. I can't stress enough the value of Shauna's book "Translating Jesus." It's a must-read! Shauna Pilgreen's wisdom and essential book are celebrated, and I'm excited to see the impact of becoming bilingual in sharing Christ's love for all. What an enriching discussion! We invite you to tune in and gain wisdom from Shauna Pilgreen's experiences and insights. Be inspired to engage with others and share Christ's love and truth in creative, culturally relevant ways. Don't miss out on this transformative conversation! Subscribe now and listen to Shauna Pilgreen on Gospel Spice. Key Takeaways: - Becoming Bilingual in Sharing the Gospel: we emphasize the importance of understanding both the language of culture and the language of Scripture to effectively share Jesus with diverse audiences. - The Power of Listening in Ministry: We pondered the countercultural nature of genuinely listening to others before offering answers or advice, recognizing the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in the process. - Engaging with the Changing Culture: Our discussion underscored the need for Christians to be culturally relevant while remaining rooted in their faith, emphasizing the relevance of translating Jesus for all people in different contexts. CONNECT WITH SHAUNA PILGREEN https://shaunapilgreen.com/ Hi there! I'm Shauna and I'm so glad you stopped by. You being here matters to me. Chances are we know each other. But then again, some of you are new to me and me to you. I dwell in San Francisco. Not because I was born here or went to school here, but because my family and I said yes to the call of God to start a church here. It's the hardest thing we've ever done. We had to make new friends (though we love our old ones). We moved far from family (nothing personal). We had no guarantee. We paid high rent. We brought three kids with us. And with all that was hard and scary and unknown, we believed God was in this and with us. The risk was worth it. And still is! Do you know why you are where you are? Can you see God's purpose for you where you live? Wherever you live, wherever you are on the faith journey, I am discovering right alongside you how to weave together faith and culture. I am sharing my findings in my blog posts, each page you click is full of purpose – all so that you can pick up the story God is writing for your life and live it out too! for me, my roots can be found in texas, georgia, louisiana, alabama, missouri, and california. there's no mistake on my journey, that if i've lived there, i made “home” as quick as possible to feel settled and sane. i've tried to leave a part of me in each place as my roots are uprooted, a part of me that left impact. though not always the story. each home contributes to the next home. suburbia feels normal until city living becomes the new normal. wherever you live... wherever you are on the faith journey... i am discovering right along with you how to weave together faith and home. I am sharing my story with each post, each page full of purpose and influence -- all so that you will pick up the story God is writing for your life and live it out too! Today, we are talking about prayer and Scripture, which are often some of the first spiritual practices that come to mind when we think about ways to connect with God… Yet, engaging with prayer and Scripture are often some of the most challenging rhythms for us to maintain. In this week's episode, my new friend, Rachael Wade is here to give us ideas and inspiration from her own journey about how to experience God's presence through prayer and Scripture. The Pantone color that I chose for this week is Lime Punch. It is fabulous and bright, because prayer and talking with God throughout our days can vibrancy to the most mundane days. Prayer and Scripture change the way we see ourselves, others, and our circumstances, helping us see light where the world sees darkness. So, that is why I chose one of the brightest colors in the Pantone guide book for next week! ------- Rachael is a wife, mom of two, seminary student, writer, and teacher who is passionate about encouraging & equipping men & women with the word of God. She believes in the power of the "in process" everyday story. For this reason, she created Olive Us a ministry where women recount to remember the goodness & faithfulness of God. Rachael faithfully serves at Epic Church in San Francisco, where she leads small groups and is on the teaching team. When Rachael isn't leading, teaching, and writing on her "Seeds of Encouragement" blog, she's hanging out in her comfy pajamas at home with her family, enjoying a nice charcuterie board, laughing at something because what is life without laughter, or riding/running with her Peloton people. *Rachael's 'Olive Us' interviews drop on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and all Major Podcast platforms on the 1st of every month. * --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/carly-bartlett/support
Ben sits down with Seth Condrey for this month's life-giving conversation. Seth is a songwriter and worship leader whose music has been viewed millions of times. Seth currently serves as the Worship Pastor at Epic Church in San Francisco. In this episode, he shares how important deliberate practice is with any gift we've been given. Seth talks about the discipline of collecting ideas. He speaks to the importance of having an adequate inner life, the vulnerability it takes to bring something into the public sphere, and how much place and presence matter.
Learn three easy places to find community, one sign you're open to community, and two simple ways to encourage your friends. If you're lonely and ever wondered how to find community and belonging, listen in to Grace In Real Life Episode 149 with Rachael Wade. God Himself is in community, being a part of the Trinity. He designed families as a way for people to be loved, supported, and strengthened. And then, He placed those families into tribes, cities, communities, and nations. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, God talks about community and friendship and the values of both. We may not think of hanging out with other humans as a spiritual discipline, but to God, togetherness, belonging, and support are critical to following Him and growing in grace. So, where do you find your people? How do you make time for community when your schedule is full of work, picking-up and dropping-off kids, volunteering, and running a house? What do you do when you're trying to connect but still feel lonely? Because finding a community where you feel like you belong leaves us wondering where to start, I invited Rachael Wade to the show. Today, Rachael walks us through: Three easy places to find community, How to find time for community when your schedule is crazy, And three ways to honor and encourage your friends. How to find community as an adult “If you want community, you need to have a posture open to receive community.” - Rachael Wade “To be open toward having multiple sources of community, where you're pouring in, and you're getting poured out, is essential.” - Rachael Wade “I'm a firm believer in going first.” - Rachael Wade What to do when you're lonely “I'm a firm believer in going first.” - Rachael Wade “Get curious when you're in those lonely seasons.” - Rachael Wade If you'd like to learn more about finding community in your real life, go here: Why perfectionists hate community Grace says you are free #147: One ridiculously easy way to spread the gospel with Twyla Franz #134: Grace-based Friendship: Friendship + the Introvert with Yohonna Smith #132: Grace-based Friendship: Making friends as an adult with Susan Seay Sign up here for A Holy Hush A Holy Hush: Reflections for Lent is a multi-part series sent only to those who sign-up and will offer simple reflections on the final days, death, and resurrection of Christ. It's an epic episode. Brad and Anne Brucker from Epic Church in Sherwood, Oregon, are interviewed by J.D. It all started with a dance on a rooftop. In addition to EPIC church, they are planting churches and serving African communities with medical care. If you are wondering if you are ready to plant a church, the Brucker's would tell you to "get in the game!" God is doing work around the world. If you are on God's mission, He will take care of you and provide abundance. Listen and be encouraged.

Pastor, are we tired of pivoting yet? I'm sure this season has been exhausting, but as much as we have tried different things (that may or may not have worked) the important question at hand is simple: what lessons did we learn? In this COVID season, Pastor, it's easy to chalk up the past two years as a one time experiment and ignore the potential lessons along the way. Can those lessons, though, help the pivoting? Can experimenting prevent the radical shift we've all felt in this COVID season? Let's talk with Kent Jacob, Lead Pastor at EPIC Church and Justin Dela Cruz, EPIC's Director of Campuses, where they talk about their COVID experiment. Lots of churches talked about shutting their doors in this COVID season, and encouraging Microsite development. EPIC did it, only doing physical church services once a month (other services were online/microsite). Did the experiment work? How did their experiment position them for the future? Let's find out as we talk with Kent & Justin about EPIC's experiment, the lessons learned, and what's next for their church! It's a amily episode this week as we welcome our Director of Ready Made Media at 12:30 - Anthony Racaneillo (RAC for short). Rac also serves on staff at one of the largest churches in Philadelphia - Epic Church. He has an incredible story that we talk about on the show, he has a background as an entrepreneur, a business owner, a fashion mogul - he has designed shoes for some of our country's top athletes and companies. God got a hold of him the last couple years and has redirected his life toward ministry. On the show today we'll be taking a deep dive today into how Epic Church is changing the game when it comes to Church Online. They produce an entire online production specifically for digital platforms - meaning when you attend Epic, it is not the same thing as what you see online. The teaching content, the sermon series might be the same, but the delivery is not. Rac is playing a big role in how Church Online is done and brings lots of fresh ideas to the table. The story of the church is an Epic. Where do you fit in in the story?
Lamar Hardwick experienced a revelation at age 36 when he was first diagnosed with autism. That watershed moment opened so many doors for him to understand how he related to and communicated with other people and led to his being able to use his writing to raise awareness for the disability community, the largest minority community group in the world. Yet it continues to also be a marginalized group in the church. In this prophetic and frank conversation, Lamar shares amazing insights into the church's own self-identity that mirrors his own journey of being unaware of his own disability, and he offers profound ways for the body of Christ to better understand itself and the needs of people with disabilities. Even in houses of faith men have lost their biblical role and mandate. Join Doug & Pesach as they tackle a conversation on Manhood with Pastor IV Marsh who leads Epic Church in Decatur, Alabama and is the founder of IAM4 Mens Movement.
