His new book is ADHD Medication: Does It Work and Is It Safe? (Roman & Littlefield, May 15, 2022). Learn more at: adhdmedicationbook.com ADHD is one of the most common problems that pediatricians, pediatric neurologists, and pediatric psychiatrists manage. Most studies indicate that 6-8 percent of children have ADHD. Approximately seventy-four million children live in the United States, and these studies all support the finding that ADHD affects approximately five million of them. And that doesn't include adults with ADHD.Because there are no medical tests to definitively “make a diagnosis” of ADHD, it is easy for critics to dismiss it as a disorder fabricated by doctors, teachers, and pharmaceutical companies. Some parents blame themselves and react with guilt, believing that they should have raised their child differently. So, when presented with the diagnosis is it any wonder that parents might react with confusion, guilt or denial? It doesn't matter how often ADHD occurs in the overall population. What matters is what happens to your child. What matters is that a short attention span, distractibility, and impulsivity produce adverse consequences in childhood and as adults. But here is the good news: Treatment with medication significantly decreases the frequency of those undesirable outcomes. In ADHD Medication, Dr. Walt Karniski uses his 40 years of experience as a developmental pediatrician to address important concerns that parents have about the use of medication for the treatment of ADHD, explaining what medication can do for your child, what it cannot do, and how to use medication in a safe way.

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) DIALOGUES traveled to Thessaloniki for an event dedicated to the city's history, its people, and its multicultural identity. On their first trip to Thessaloniki, the SNF DIALOGUES made Warehouse C at the Thessaloniki Port Authority the place to be. In an event open and free for all, more than 500 Thessalonians and friends came together to discuss the city's identity as a tourist destination, the stereotypes it faces, its multiculturalism, and more. Orestis Andreadakis, director of the Thessaloniki Film Festival, responding the moniker of “the new Berlin” some seek to apply to the city, said, “We should be talking about a new Thessaloniki, not a new Berlin—about a city looking back at its past and its ghosts in order to create a radical future.” Maria Kavala, Adjunct Professor of Modern History at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki's School of Political Science, said, “Thessaloniki was a city the moment it was created. For those who are older, it is the Jerusalem of Southeast Europe, a refugee capital, an intellectual center, while for the young it is… a cool city!” Actor Ieroklis Michaelidis attributed the uniqueness and charm of Thessaloniki to “the clash of the cosmopolitan with the provincial,” stressing that “we transcend our roles when we unite culture, art, and the prospects of dialogue in this region.” Yiannis Boutaris, president of the Holocaust Museum of Greece, spoke about “Thessaloniki's assets, which are culture, universities, and agricultural products,” pointing out that “its multiculturalism and its diverse population” are what make Thessaloniki unique. Georgia Tsiamanta, Project Manager of OK!Thess, said Thessaloniki is “a gigantic window to the world” and made reference to “opportunities for cooperation with our northern neighbors.” Mark Mazower, Professor of History at Columbia University, journalist, and writer, contributed to the conversation via Skype, making the point that "Thessaloniki has always been a vibrant, true city with a historical conscience.” Brief contributions were also made by Dimitrios Zafeiriou, Professor of Child Neurology and Developmental Pediatrics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki; Giorgos Nikolaou, cofounder of the startup SoulScan; and Sofia Sarri, cofounder of the startup Shifting Our City. The SNF DIALOGUES are curated and moderated by Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou.

Dr. Stephen Cowan - Author of Fire Child, Water Child: How Understanding the Five Types of ADHD Can Help You Improve Your Child's Self Esteem and Attention, Board Certified pediatrician with over 25 years of experience specializing in ADD, ADHD, Autism and the like. Dr. Cowan uses a holistic approach incorporating both Western and Eastern medicine to treat these difficult issues. Did you know that according to the World Health Organization, the United States ranks 33rd in the world for average life expectancy? 33rd! For a country that prides itself on innovation, wealth and technology, the average life span in the US is shorter than that of countries such as Israel, Qatar, South Korea, and Iceland.  Hmmm, so much for that incredible Western medicine...right? Well, not really. As we discuss this week (one of many topics we cover in this incredibly varied and interesting episode), Western medicine is by far the best at treating acute illnesses or life threatening emergencies.  Some of the most innovative and miraculous procedures have come from Western medicine and then quickly spread across the globe.  But as the old sang goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and that's where we often go wrong in the Western world. We have bought too much into the idea of the quick fix. We don't want to work for anything anymore.  We want our burgers in under a minute, we want our data instantly, and we want our health with a swig of water (or soda) and a pill.  And as we are learning, it just doesn't work that way when it comes to such a complicated machine as the human body.  To care for the body takes a lifetime of smart choices, and it's no secret what those choices are! We need to eat well, sleep well, exercise, nurture relationships, etc. But sometimes we just aren't willing to make the effort, and we often pay the ultimate price.  Cancer rates are soaring, diabetes and obesity are destroying the lives of both the young and the old, and the number of children being diagnosed with disabilities such as ADD, ADHD, and autism continue to grow at a steady clip.  It's time we change the way we look at illness. Stephen Cowan MD is a board-certified pediatrician with 25 years of clinical experience working with children. He has a subspecialty in Developmental Pediatrics and has developed a unique holistic approach to evaluating and treating children struggling with chronic physical, emotional and cognitive disorders.  Considering the child as a reflection of the inter-related forces of family and environment is the central focus of his practice. This approach respects the inseparability of mind, body and spirit and promotes a deeper understanding of what it means to be healthy. Dr. Cowan ompleted his pediatric training at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in NY in 1987 and went on to complete a 2 year fellowship in Child Development at the Developmental Disabilities Center at Roosevelt Hospital.  He is long-standing member of the American Board of Pediatrics, a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics and serves on the AAP committee of Developmental Disabilities. He is a member of the Autism Research Institute's Defeat Autism Now practitioners. Dr. Cowan is a co-founder and advisory board member of the Holistic Pediatric Association and serves on the advisory boards of the Integrative Health Symposium and the TCM World Foundation Building Bridges Conference. Although inclusive education of disabled children is now an accepted practice, it is often challenged by negative peer attitudes. Researchers at Tolouse University undertook an interventional study aimed at improving students’ attitudes towards their disabled peers. Dr Peter Baxter, Editor-in-Chief of Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology, spoke to one of the authors of the study, Dr Emmanuelle Godeau (Research Unit on Perinatal Epidemiology, Tolouse University) and to Professor Peter Rosenbaum (Professor of Pediatrics and Developmental Pediatrics, McMaster University) who wrote a commentary on this study.
