In this deeply honest episode of The Recovery Vow Podcast…We sit down with Dave Willis, marriage coach, pastor, and co-host of the Naked Marriage Podcast. Dave joins Eric Kennedy to unpack one of the most overlooked foundations of recovery: emotional safety. From hidden addictions and secrecy to the painful process of rebuilding trust “one drop at a time,” they expose how recovery isn't just about quitting a behavior… It's about becoming a safe person again. This episode is a wake-up call: you can be sober and still unsafe. Eric's endeavors are not merely personal triumphs; they encompass a commitment to fostering a community where vulnerability supersedes shame, and authentic connections replace isolation, thereby offering a lifeline to those navigating their own recovery journeys. Throughout this episode, we will traverse the emotional landscapes of recovery, exploring the profound significance of shared narratives and the transformative power they wield in instigating healing and providing solace to the afflicted. Join us as we delve into this compelling dialogue that aspires to illuminate the path toward understanding and compassion.Takeaways:The dialogue emphasizes the paramount importance of breaking the stigma surrounding addiction, which often remains veiled by silence and societal prejudices, thus hindering recovery efforts. You will find that recovery is not merely a personal journey but a communal experience that necessitates vulnerability, fostering connection and empathy among individuals navigating similar challenges. The conversation elucidates the notion that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, is engaged in some form of recovery, whether from addiction, loss, or other life-altering events, underscoring our shared human experience.I urge you to recognize that storytelling, particularly through authentic narratives of struggle, serves as a powerful catalyst for healing and hope, facilitating connections that transcend individual experiences. You should consider that the transformative process of recovery is intertwined with faith, illustrating how personal faith narratives can resonate with the experiences of others, thus promoting collective healing.I assert that the legacy one leaves behind, particularly through acts of service and community building, can profoundly impact future generations, allowing for a cultural shift towards greater compassion and understanding.Links referenced in this episode:recoveryvow.comstevenscreekchurch.commarriageafteraddiction.comMentioned in this episode:My friend Dr. Noah St. John calls this 'the invisible brake.' No story is too broken for redemption. Eric Kennedy shares how recovery, faith, and community transformed his life. Listener question: My wife and I have been married going on 5 years and we have two daughters, one is my 14 yr old stepdaughter and the other is our 3 yr old. We both come from broken homes, and my wife has dealt with sexual and physical abuse from many men since childhood. Some of that past pain she takes out on me in various ways. Divorce is not in my vocabulary, but over time it's become more of an option. But I am determined to honor God first in my commitment to Him and our marriage, even though she dishes it out pretty hard. What do I do? On this episode of the Recovery Vow Podcast, host Eric Kennedy sits down with two very special guests — Zack Straughn and Katherine Straughn — and their story comes full circle in the most beautiful way. Katherine first joined the podcast in February 2025. Zack followed in May 2025. They would later find love in each other… and get married. In this heartfelt conversation, Eric brings them together to talk about what it looks like to build a relationship in recovery. Both Zack and Katherine are in recovery, but their struggles don't define them — they are defined by resilience, faith, commitment, and love. Their story is a powerful reminder that recovery doesn't disqualify you from a beautiful future. It doesn't mean you have to walk alone. Healing and healthy love are possible. Together, they open up about: - Finding love while doing the hard work of recovery - Building trust, vulnerability, and spiritual intimacy - Navigating relationship dynamics with sobriety at the center - Why recovery is part of their story — but not the whole story If you've ever wondered whether lasting love is possible after addiction, this episode is for you. In today's episode, I sit down with Eric Kennedy, founder of Recovery Vow and author of Marriage After Addiction, for one of the most raw and redemptive conversations we've ever had on this show. Eric spent 15 years deep in addiction—alcohol, cocaine, crack, jail time, suicide attempts, losing his marriage, and losing himself. This isn't a story of high-functioning addiction. This is rock bottom in every sense of the word. Eric opens up about growing up with emotional neglect, how unresolved trauma fueled his addiction, and the moments that finally forced him to choose life. We talk about the long road to sobriety, rebuilding trust with his kids, walking through divorce and remarriage, and what radical ownership really looks like when you're trying to rebuild a marriage after years of destruction. Whether you've battled addiction yourself or you're carrying unspoken wounds from your past, this episode is a powerful reminder that healing, redemption, and generational change are possible. Timeline Summary: [0:00] Introduction [1:02] Why addiction isn't the real problem—trauma, disconnection, and silence are. [1:40] Introducing Eric Kennedy and the depth of his addiction story. [2:08] Addiction beginning with alcohol and escalating to cocaine and crack. [5:14] Using substances to bury trauma, anxiety, and depression. [7:13] Growing up with an emotionally unavailable father. [11:23] Seeing his father drunk as a child and the lasting impact. [15:00] Addiction escalating alongside marriage and fatherhood. [22:44] A suicide attempt and waking up in an ambulance. [25:05] Driving to get drugs with his kids in the car. [29:29] Arrest, jail time, and asking for help again. [30:10] Entering a 30-day treatment program in Florida. [33:14] Gaining custody of his sons while newly sober. [35:32] Finding faith, community, and structure in recovery. [37:02] Meeting his wife Kristin and rebuilding a healthy marriage. [42:44] Radical ownership and rebuilding trust through action. [51:48] Being fully honest with his sons about his past. [53:31] Choosing life, sobriety, and fatherhood every day. Five Key Takeaways Addiction is often rooted in unresolved trauma and emotional disconnection, not just substance abuse. Recovery requires radical ownership and healthy selfishness so you can show up for your kids and relationships. Trust is rebuilt through consistent actions over time, not promises or apologies. Honesty with your kids can break generational cycles and rebuild connection. Redemption is always possible, but it requires humility, structure, and daily commitment. My guest this week is historian Eric Gonzaba, whose fascinating work includes the Wearing Gay History archive — a collection of vintage queer t-shirts — and Mapping the Gay Guides, an accounting of queer travel guides from the 60s and 70s. Eric's interest in history was piqued at an early age, when he developed an obsession for the Kennedy Center Honors, which pay annual tribute to lifetime innovators in the cultural fields. And it's through his field of study that he continues to explore our sometimes-murky queer past, and inspire others to do the same. We'll have that conversation in a minute.First, a couple quick reminders, starting with a heads-up that my new video about the rise and fall and rise again of 50s heartthrob Tab Hunter is now up on YouTube! And I'll have a video about the creation of Rock Hudson coming your way very soon. Also I hope you'll join me for weekly livestreams over on Twitch every Sunday afternoon. This weekend we'll be watching the queer Thanksgiving classic Addams Family Values. That's at twitch.tv/mattbaume, Sunday at noon pacific, 3pm eastern. And if you haven't yet, take a look at my new book about the history of queer characters on American sitcoms, Hi Honey, I'm Homo! — available now wherever books are sold.
