PHARR, RGV – The business community of the Rio Grande Valley has been praised for the key role it played in persuading the Texas legislature to pump more money into public education.State lawmakers invested an additional $6.5 billion into public education during the 2019 legislative session, with Hidalgo County receiving an additional $90 million over the next biennium and Cameron County receiving just shy of this amount.“For sure,” said Jennifer Esterline, executive director of the Texas Education Grantmakers Advocacy Consortium, when asked if the Valley business community frequently went to Austin to support meaningful school finance reform.“And they did not do it just in Austin. They did it in their own communities. The fact that the business community was writing op-eds, speaking out in press conferences about the importance of meaningful reform was absolutely critical.”In this podcast we hear from Esterline and Sagar Desai, managing director of The Commit! Partnership.

Can tools alone solve this problem? What else is required? Check out this post and discussion for the basis of our conversation on this week’s episode co-hosted by me, David Spark (@dspark), the creator of CISO Series and Allan Alford (@AllanAlfordinTX), CISO at Mitel. On this episode of Defense in Depth, you'll learn: We question if there's some type of pseudo-protection racket going on with auditors offering to increase vendors' security scores if they go into business with them. The basic model is to help you identify issues and resolve them in order to reduce your risk and protect yourself from certain types of risk. While our risk changes on a daily basis, we're not measuring the risk other 3rd parties may be introducing at the same iteration level. Often it's only annual which doesn't coincide with how we measure our own risk. As a result, there's a desire for ongoing real-time assessment of third party risk. CISOs want the depth of an audit combined with real-time monitoring. Best of breed approach often introduces new risk at the lines of integration.
The aerospace and aviation industries are changing as result of consolidation. Driven by need and the demands of large OEM's, Rockwell Collins, UTC, B/E Aerospace, Esterline, Embraer and Bombardier and others have taken some dramatic steps to ensure shareholder value. Where does this leave the little guy? Is he sunk, or is there room for entrepreneurial spirit? How does he compete if he's, defacto, competing against his customer? In a quick 20 minutes, my good friend Matt Johnson and I discuss the coming changes that smaller players will face. If Boeing succeeds, it will change the industry. –Craig Picken Takeaways Boeing's move into “Global Services” means they are now competing against their former suppliers. But $60 Billion is a BIG number. If successful, Boeing will transform an entire industry. Innovation in the industry is alive and well. And, it's coming from smaller, more versatile players with quick reaction times. Don't ignore them. Smaller companies need to find strong players who can multi-task. The successful “big company” executive doesn't necessarily bring the right skills to a start-up. Learn More About Your Host: Co-founder and Managing Partner for Northstar Group, Craig is focused on recruiting senior level leadership, sales and operations executives for some of the most prominent companies in the aviation and aerospace industry. Clients include well known aircraft OEM's, aircraft operators, leasing / financial organizations, and Maintenance / Repair / Overhaul (MRO) providers. Since 2009 Craig has personally concluded more than 150 executive searches in a variety of disciplines. As the only executive recruiter who has flown airplanes, sold airplanes AND run a business, Craig is uniquely positioned to build deep, lasting relationships with both executives and the boards and stakeholders they serve. This allows him to use a detailed, disciplined process that does more than pair the ideal candidate with the perfect opportunity, and hit the business goals of the companies he serves.
