Where have they been sitting, waiting to find a face to wear them? Well, we get into that. Also, we get into the mud about the powerful Italian conglomerate that owns SO MANY PIECES of the eyewear industry – from insurance companies to eyewear brands to manufacturing to retail eyewear stores. It's amazing the stronghold this megacompany has on today's eyewear industry. Just as we talk about with the fast fashion industry, the eyewear industry has lost much of its quality luster. We often refer to the planned obsolescence of our era, and how — “They just don't make them like they used to.” Well, my guests actually have the knowledge to articulate what makes vintage glasses so different from their current counterparts. What has changed in how they're made today, and what aspects of craftsmanship made them so elevated back n the day? We also touch on the massive waste that the glasses industry is generating, considering the materiality and disposable approach to manufacturing them today. It's wild to think that the styles made today may never be considered *deadstock* or deemed worthy to resell. The eyeglasses industry is very competitive, but EyeBuyDirect is focused on cornering the market via affordability. The EssilorLuxotica-owned company has been around since 2005 and its primary focus has been on value: a pair of frames from EyeBuyDirect can be as cheap as $6. This week on the Modern Retail Podcast, CEO Sunny Jiang spoke about the company's trajectory and how she's been steering the ship. Jiang has been at EyeBuyDirect for 15 years -- she first took a job there when she was fresh out of university as a finance controller. She's risen the ranks ever since, going from operations director to general manager and then ultimately becoming CEO in 2017. "Since I've become CEO the company has grown nearly 300%," she said. EyeBuyDirect was one of the first online-only glasses players. Though Zenni is a few years older, Warby Parker is much younger. And, according to Jiang, the way the company is able to sell glasses so cheaply is because of its business model. "we manage everything from the beginning to the end," she said. This includes manufacturing, logistics, even returns. "This allows us to have the ability or possibility to forward a lot of profitability directly to customers." When EyeBuyDirect first launched, there were hardly any digital competitors out there. Now, the playing field is a lot more intense, thanks to leaders like Warby Parker and America's Best. Over the last two years specifically, Jiang said that a number of competitors have also been upping their digital games. Still, she's confident that the company can continue to grow. According to her own competitive analysis, the top three or four eyeglass players only account for about half of the market. To her, that means she can continue taking market share and finding new customers. To do that, EyeBuyDirect recently underwent a rebrand, upgrading the look of the website and the company's marketing materials -- including its logo, fonts and overall imagery. On the program, Jiang described the entire process. "One of the reasons why we were thinking to rebrand is that we found the brand or the company didn't have a clear purpose," she said. With that done, Jiang is currently crafting a five-year plan for EyeBuyDirect's growth. This means boosting its customer service options and also trying to up its delivery speed. "The category will continue to grow, and I will make sure that EyeBuyDirect will beat the benchmarks."

We kicked off this episode on FB and IG and the response was fantastic. We started off with a few questions: What's your morning routine?, Where are you racing this weekend? DD shoe is a yes or a no go for you? Coffee Wars DD, 5Bucks , McDonalds of BK 50cent ? What's on your feet? and what type of bike do you ride and have you tried that new Beyond Meat burger? As the calls started coming in from around country is was hard for me to contain my enthusiasm. We covered the essentials of getting fitted for a bike with Khadijah Diggs who is a the USA Triathlon Team, which answered Will's from Bklyn question about bikes. Felicia recently started riding Peloton bikes after recovering from an injury, she has run all 50 States and will be in NYC for Peloton Home Invasion in May. Felicia shared her weight losing tips from her friend and triathlon coach dd_fitspiration on IG. I was so tempted to say bye Felicia when we got off the phone. We talked with out sole brothers Chip and Juan about the new DD Saucony Kinvara. Then we rounded out the hour with ways in which you can get your "Black Card" with Angela. Richard Fuller is our Unicorn of the Day, I had the pleasure of meeting Richard and during our conversation it was obvious to me that he's passion about the work that he does at his Global Pollution nonprofit Pure Earth.
