Colin Moss knows all too well that fame is a prison. Thankfully, it's a prison he managed to escape when moving to New York to pursue his acting career. Colin took a massive risk by giving up a rather successful career on TV in South Africa to start at the bottom in one of the most cutthroat cities to be an actor. Judging by his extensive IMDB page, which features credits on Black Mirror, Jessica Jones, and The Deuce, it's a risk that's paid off, although it took a few lucky breaks and many failures to get to a place where he's consistently booked and busy.In this episode, we get into Colin's early days as a stand-up comedian and TV presenter, we discuss the dreaded Heat magazine era of fame in South Africa, and we learn about the realities of giving up local fame for international success. Not many people in comedy have an engineering degree to fall back on (they're usually doctors), but Céline Tshika is, uh, built different. You probably know Céline from her viral musical sketches that have skyrocketed her to online fame, but those videos are the culmination of years of experimenting and growing as a multi-faceted artist. After making her parents happy by earning an engineering degree, Céline ventured to the Cape Town of USA, Los Angeles, and studied acting, where she created, wrote and starred in her award-winning comedy web series, Jess Goes West. Now she's back in the Los Angeles of SA and combining her love of theatre, music, and comedy with her debut solo show, Bad African. In this episode, we hear how things literally changed over night for Céline and discuss the pressures of delivering a great live show when you've built an audience online. Premature Obituaries? Bruce Friedrich's Optimism for Cultivated Meat

Business for Good Podcast

Upon reading his obituary, Mark Twain reportedly wrote that “the reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” Whether Twain actually wrote this or not, the reality remains that today the reports of the death of cultivated meat are indeed quite real. Yet Bruce Friedrich, the president of the Good Food Institute, is here to tell you that he believes such reports are not based on science and are indeed greatly exaggerated.  Few people have done more to inspire others to pursue alternative protein—including cultivated meat—as a strategy to ameliorate world problems than Bruce. I've known Bruce since 1996, and one thing that's remained constant during the past three decades is that Bruce's commitment to reducing suffering on the planet is simply enormous. Whether in his role as part of the nonprofit animal advocacy world or the crusade he's been on since co-founding GFI in 2016 to render alternative proteins no longer alternative, Bruce's lodestar has always been: how can he do as much good as possible during his limited time on the planet? In this conversation, Bruce and I focus on the state of the plant-based and cultivated meat industries today, why he believes the critics are misguided, whether China will lead this race, how to respond to the new cultivated meat bans like those newly passed in Florida and Alabama, and critically: what it will take for alt-protein to no longer be alt. Discussed in this episode This episode is the 10th in our ten-part podcast series on cultivated meat. The previous nine episodes include Orbillion Bio, UPSIDE Foods, Avant Meats, BlueNalu, Eat Just, Fork & Good, Mosa Meat, New Harvest, and Aleph Farms. Dr. Elliot Swartz's presentation: The Cost Drivers of Cultivated Meat Production. GFI's Plant-Based Meat Production Volume Modeling 2030 analysis. GFI's numerous additional resources, including The Science of Cultivated Meat, Advancing Solutions for Alternative Protein, The Costs and Environmental Impacts of Cultivated Meat, and The GFI Startup Manual.  You can sign up to receive GFI's many newsletters and to be alerted to their many webinars and other events and resources at gfi.org/newsletters.  Bruce cites numerous laws, including Amara's Law (we tend to overestimate the effect of a technology in the short run and underestimate the effect in the long run), Wright's Law (for every cumulative doubling of units produced, costs will fall by a constant percentage), and even Newton's Third Law (for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction). Good Meat is now selling cultivated chicken at a butchery in Singapore. China's five-year plan for the future of meat. The cultivated meat documentary Meat the Future. Bruce recommends Hannah Ritchie's book, Not The End of the World. You can see Paul's review of it here. Ezra Klein's 2021 NY Times column, Let's Launch a Moonshot for Meatless Meat. Bruce's 2019 TED Talk. The Center for Strategic and International Studies' report: The Future Appetite for Alternative Proteins. Our past episodes with Ryan Bethencourt and Jason Matheny. An upcoming episode with Israel's albumin producer PoLoPo! More about Bruce Friedrich Bruce Friedrich is founder & president of the Good Food Institute, a global network of nonprofit science-focused think tanks, with more than 220 full-time team members across affiliates in the U.S., India, Israel, Brazil, Singapore, and Europe (UK, Germany, & EC). GFI works on alternative protein policy, science, and corporate engagement - to accelerate the production of plant-based and cultivated meat in order to bolster the global protein supply while protecting our environment, promoting global health, and preventing food insecurity. Friedrich is a TED Fellow, Y Combinator alum, 2021 "American Food Hero" (EatingWell Magazine), and popular speaker on food innovation. He has penned op-eds for the Wall Street Journal, Foreign Policy, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, Nature Food, Wired, and many other publications. He has represented GFI on the TED Radio Hour, New Yorker Radio Hour, the Ezra Klein Show, Making Sense (Sam Harris), and a variety of other podcasts and TV programs. Bruce's 2019 TED talk has been viewed more than 2.4 million times and translated into 30 languages. Friedrich graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown Law and also holds degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the London School of Economics.

Defying the Odds: Orbillion Bio Raising Capital for Cultivated Meat in 2024

If you follow the cultivated meat sector, you know that the last couple years have been tough. Some companies have gone under, others have gone into hibernation, and others have shed staff in cash-conserving layoffs. Major publications have published opinion column obituaries for this industry, yet the work goes on. Part of that work is that of Obillion Bio, a B2B cultivated meat company which successfully raised capital in 2024, surely a Herculean feat. Having now brought in $15 million, while the Orbillion technology is complex, the business model is simple: grow high-quality wagyu beef cells and then sell those cells to others who will create finished goods with them. In this conversation, Orbillion CEO Patricia Bubner and I chat about what makes them different from other cultivated meat startups, her work as a plant and fungal biologist prior to her career in mammalian cell culture, what she thinks are the best ways to scale, why she thinks she was successful in fundraising during a funding famine, and more.  Discussed in this episode Patricia is a fan of John Steinbeck's books. Patricia co-founded The Millet Project. Orbillion went through the Y Combinator accelerator program Patricia and Paul both recommend Hannah Ritchie book, Not The End of the World. You can see Paul's review of it here. AgFunder News on Orbillion Bio. More about Patricia Bubner, PhD Patricia Bubner is a PhD scientist and engineer focused on commercializing cultivated beef. She is the co-founder and CEO of Orbillion Bio, Inc. with the mission to make sustainable, nutritious, and flavorful cultivated meat at price parity.  Patricia grew up in Graz, Austria, surrounded by an abundance of local and regional foods. With farmers as grandparents, she learned early where food comes from and the hard work that goes into producing it. Her deep interest in food — and the molecular basis of food — led her to study chemistry. Patricia holds an MSc in Technical Chemistry and a PhD in Biotechnology from Graz University of Technology in Austria, and she conducted her postdoctoral research at the Energy Biosciences Institute at UC Berkeley. During that time, she also pursued her conviction of a more sustainable food system as a co-founder of the agriculture and food systems initiative, The Millet Project.  Prior to Orbillion, Patricia advised several technology companies and led the Analytics and QC teams at biopharma startups. During her time with the Bioprocess Science team at Boehringer Ingelheim (BI), she built and led a team dedicated to scaling bioprocess development for mammalian cells — the very systems required to commercialize cultivated meat. At BI, Patricia met and worked hand-in-hand with Orbillion co-founder, Samet Yildirim, on a novel bioprocessing technology now commercialized by Pfizer. Combining her experience in the biopharma, food, and sustainable materials industries, Patricia co-founded Orbillion Bio, Inc. Orbillion is a B2B cultivated meat technology company that brings commercially viable meat to the ever-growing $211B global ground beef market. Orbillion has developed a game-changing algorithm for the scale-up of cultivated meat that makes commercializing low-cost cultivated beef possible. Orbillion has raised $15M and is backed by The Venture Collective, Y Combinator, At One Ventures, Venture Souq, and Metaplanet among others.

Dear listeners, I have yet another very important tale for you today, and one of absolute truth! This is above and beyond the tale that I laid upon your mind in the podcast Camping Under The Stars, Vol. 5 (Sanctuary), which was a mere 2 weeks of living off of the land and surviving on hot dogs, bananas, and peanut butter. Dear listeners, this tale stretches across 3 years. 3 long YEARS!! It is not one that was pleasant, but it had a(n eventual) happy ending. How does that tie into today's episode?? Well, let me tell you....... In a time not long ago, during a weird and upside-down world of toilet paper shortages and no haircuts lived a content little dude whom we will call Poemhobbit. He lived in his happy village with his happy family and created musings of aural jewels for people all over the world which he delivered like an Easter egg. Well, for some odd reason, Poemhobbit and his family felt that they should travel to a land unknown, so he sold his tiny cottage quickly and with a prosperous outcome. Poemhobbit was so happy! But, before he and his family would decide on the perfect place, they would live in a less-than-desirable village that was infested by a sub-societal mob of unhappy zombies that smelled of burning skunk cigarettes. 'It is okay', thought Poemhobbit, 'it will not last for more than 3 months. I will take this negative experience and thrive, nonetheless. These 3 months will go by quickly and we will have departed before any misery sets in!' And so it was..... However, those 3 months turned into 6 months. Then, into a year. And, yet another year. And another year after that. And anot........wait, how many years is that?!? So, Poemhobbit was stuck in this prison-like dystopian cubicle for 3 years. And, the misery did set in. In fact, it festered like a cancer. The family was unhappy, hope had abandoned them, their dreams turned into dusty cobwebs, and escaping was something that was never even talked about without malice and regret. Poemhobbit was miserable, and his joy for the arts became a chore and a cumbersome endeavor. It was difficult for Poemhobbit to weave sounds and spread joy when it had escaped him.  But, Poemhobbit never gave up. He didn't always allow his family to know of his struggles, and instead fought to shine positive light on the negative situation. He fueled them with his (fake) optimism and assurance. Moreso, Poemhobbit had to really convince himself that his misery was perception, and that his ambitions would pull him out of the quicksand. He had to be the beacon of light, the sunbeam to those that depended upon him, and somehow find the strength to burn through the shadows and dust. 'Stay strong', Poemhobbit told himself, 'and let those that follow you tread upon a path of optimism and diligence.' Well, as fate would have it, persistence finally did win. Poemhobbit held out and never stopped raining hope and optimism upon his family. They were eventually able to escape the inferno of stinky skunk cigarettes burned by sketchy circus clowns. This journey in time was very debilitating physically, emotionally, and spiritually. If Poemhobbit gave up hope (which nearly happened many, many times), then he would have let down his family. In the end, Poemhobbit found a nice cottage in a small village where he had laid his wishes. Fortune smiled down upon his family, and the fire inside him rekindled once again. The struggle for comfort had finally subsided. Sometimes, to succeed you need the positive person around you to inspire you and light up your ambitions. Sometimes that person needs to be you. While the modern world wants us to let out everything and seek comfort from our hardships, your boy Poemhob........... I mean Tonepoet, believes that controlling this like a water spigot and knowing when, how much, and to who you water your hardships to is an exercise of optimal self-control. Seek a co-pilot that can give you guidance when you need it, so that you can ignite the light inside those that rely on you for assurance during tough times. And, in turn, be an inspirational sunbeam to others. Things will work out for you if you show persistence and patience. In this in-depth conversation, data scientist and researcher Hannah Ritchie delves into key insights from her new book 'Not The End of The World', which challenges the pervasive idea that human society is doomed due to environmental degradation. She explores various environmental problems, including climate change and plastic pollution, and emphasizes the potential for progress in tackling these critical issues. Hannah also discusses the essential role of technology and outlines the importance of lifting people out of poverty as a measure against climate change. Her argument centers around the balance of environmental change and human impact in achieving a sustainable planet. Furthermore, she provides advice on dealing with climate anxiety, career progression, and essential work ethics. Link to transcript, video and more here: www.thendobetter.com/arts/2024/1/26/hannah-ritchie-sustainability-progress-not-the-end-of-the-world-podcast Approach: Hannah's work is primarily driven by data, focusing on the interplay between sustainability, climate change, and patterns of global development. Her new book, "Not the End of the World," addresses one of the most significant challenges of our time - environmental sustainability.  In the book, Hannah dispels a range of myths associated with environmental issues. She counters the prevailing narrative which claims we are doomed and there's nothing left to do about our environmental crisis. Instead, she believes we can change the narrative and become the first generation to build a sustainable planet. Tackling Climate Change:    Hannah's optimism for combating climate change stems from the significant strides made in technology, especially renewable energy technologies. These technologies are no longer mere futuristic imaginings. They are realistic, economical, and deployable on a large scale.  However, she acknowledges the difficulty of the task at hand. The world is on track for 2 and a half to 3 degrees of warming which puts us in challenging terrain. We need rapid technological change coupled with significant societal transformation to alter our trajectory.  Addressing Biodiversity Loss:  Biodiversity loss, according to Hannah, is among the most challenging problems explored in her book. The manifestation of this crisis is nuanced as it involves intricate geo-political and economic dynamics. While technology can help, solving the biodiversity crisis will require simultaneous action on many fronts, from controlling deforestation to addressing climate change and overfishing.

Planet LP host Ted Asregadoo and Popdose writer Keith Creighton are inching closer to the end of the year with the November New Music Report. This episode is jam-packed with some stellar music recommendations just in time for the holidays. Segment One: The Big Album It's Prince! Known at various times as The Purple One, Christopher, His Royal Badness, The Artist, or Jamie Starr, Prince was at the top of his game between 1980 and 1987 with an impressive music output that few in the music world could match. Why? Because of The Vault. A prolific writer, Prince vaulted roughly 8,000 songs.  In 1991, after a series of lackluster albums, Prince released “Diamonds and Pearls” with his new backing band, the New Power Generation. The result was his fifth (and final) #1 hit in the US with “Cream,” a #3 hit with the title track, and two top 20 hits with “Gett Off” and Money Don't Matter 2 Night.” Overall, “Diamonds and Pearls” was an absolute commercial success for Prince.   On October 27, 2023, Sony released a super deluxe version with three CDs of vaulted tracks, a double live album, a remaster of the original record, and a disc with singles and different mixes. That's a lot of music, and Ted and Keith break it all down into digestible bits to highlight what's brilliant about the super deluxe edition, what's good, and what misses the mark.   Segment Two: New Music Releases The Transcanada Highwaymen's “Explosive Hits Vol #1 is mostly a carefully curated album of cover songs popular in the 1970s. These are Mellow and Radio Gold songs sung by a supergroup consisting of Moe Berry from The Pursuit of Happiness, Chris Murphy from Sloan, Craig Morthey from Odds, and Steven Page formerly of the Barenaked Ladies, but has gone on to a fantastic solo career. Featured songs include their cover of Andy Kim's “Rock Me Gently, and “Which Way You Goin' Billy” by The Poppy Family. Samples of both songs are embedded in this episode.  Lol Tolhurst (former drummer from The Cure), Budgie (from Siouxsie & The Banshees), and producer Jackknife Lee have created a cinematic mindscrew of an album entitled “Los Angles.”  Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark are back with what will likely be the final album of their career, and boy what a way to go out! Nowhere on the record are songs that sound like their biggest US hit, “If You Leave.” Rather, as Keith says, this is a soundtrack for the end of the world. Ted compares “Bauhaus Staircase” to Tears for Fears' “The Tipping Point” for its strength, its familiarity at times, and the satisfying way it's all put together. Duran Duran is back with Dance Macabre, a Halloween-theme mashup of covers, updated obscure deep cuts, and some originals. Also, guitarist Andy Taylor returns to the group, and so does the drummer of 17 years with the band, Warren Cuccrullo.  If you want to go on a journey with a musician who is a bit of an acquired taste, give Christian Kjellvander a try. “Hold Your Love Still” may not be for everyone, but once you become familiar with Kjellvander's voice, you'll find this record mesmerizing — as you will hear. Nat Jay's latest EP, “Turns Out It's Not The End” is one of Keith's favorites this year. Comparing her to an outlier star to Taylor Swift's galaxy-consuming supernova, Jay's song “Something More” could have been included in the new Hunger Games soundtrack — and you'll be able to hear why. Shplang! has been on the music scene for almost three decades, and is part of the International Pop Overthrow scene. Their latest song, “Understood” is featured in this episode.  Segment Three: Stream It Before You Buy It Quick hit recommendations. "Pretty Vicious" by The Struts “Telephone Line” by Juliana Hatfield “New Blue Sun” by Andre 3000 “Revisions of Truth” by One Square Mile “Chronicles of a Diamond” by Black Pumas “Can't Find The Brakes” by Dirty Honey “Purple Rain” by Dolly Parton “Harridan” (Live) by Porcupine Tree

Since this is Goat Season, that is of course the meat in a nonsense sandwich piled high with diversions into Power Rangers S.P.D., our favorite season finales from totally unrelated shows, and the apocalyptically ridiculous season(series) finale of The Lyon's Den. Why the quotes around "welcome?" It's because Durand lives in Argentina, and his conversational English is not that great; and, as you might expect, Kevin is a big, tall, dummy, and he speaks no other languages.  As a way to work around the language barrier, Durand selected 10 unique pieces of music to discuss, and wrote short reflections about each one, which Kevin reads throughout the episode. Now, we are to walk by the Spirit and not go back to the things that held us in bondage. We were called to freedom, not to the things of the flesh. We are to love one another, not challenging or envying one another. Finally, we are to bear one another's burdens. Once taught the word, we are to share it. We aren't to lose heart in doing good. Lead Through Strengths
Using Strengths For Task Swapping - With Jessica Rhodes

Lead Through Strengths

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 22, 2016 29:11

This Episode’s Focus on Strengths Jessica Rhodes joins us to show you how to apply your top strengths. She also shares some magical ideas for uncovering the natural talents of people on your team. You’ll find this episode especially useful if you’ve had your team take the StrengthsFinder survey, yet wondered how to actually apply strengths to real-world situations to improve and grow your business. Jessica is an inspiring guest, who encourages you to experiment. She helps you change things up, use your strengths to maximize potential, and to increase profitability. As we’re expanding our StrengthsFinder team in Austin, Texas and around the world, this interview was helpful for us too. It was a great mix of strengths-based development, hiring tips, and awesome chats about growing as a leader. What You’ll Learn Jessica shares these tips: Start with you. Understand both your strengths and weaknesses. Use your strengths to move you to where you want to go. And hire people who are strong in the areas where you’re weak. This leads to a well-rounded team (and keeps you from having to perform tasks you hate)! Use your strengths to achieve your goal. Jessica shares the first major goal she achieved after completing the StrengthsFinder Assessment. Knowing that she was going to be on maternity leave in nine months, she set the goal to have her company not only be surviving, but experiencing a strong level of growth, even while she was taking care of her family. Try Task Swapping. Find the right team members, and match their job responsibilities with their strengths. Hire And Quickly Experiment With Your Team’s Talents. Be willing to test out new responsibilities. Jessica switched things up with her employees after reading the StrengthsFinder 2.0 It has improved business performance and has helped the team enjoy their roles. For example: Sue did fine when she started, yet she really started exceling when she became the Director of Client Happiness. It was a perfect use of Sue’s Positivity, Woo, and Communication talent themes. Jessica also asked Sue to use those talents to create customer onboarding packets and to run their client gratitude program. Cathy did fine when she started, yet she really took off when Jessica started tapping into her natural talents. Jessica used Cathy’s Input and Learner talent themes when she made Cathy the official hub for software training on the team. It allowed Cathy to get energy from being a curator. Jessica helped her invest in her Developer and Strategic talents to create new systems and trainings that would serve the business in the long term. Make It Rain With Change. Realize that while some people enjoy doing the same task every day, others get easily bored. If an employee gets bored, change their responsibilities so that person has a high level of variety. Then watch to see how much that person’s productivity increases (and it will). Remember This Is The Beginning, Not The End. It’s more than just knowing your strengths. Jessica says that the results of the assessment are like a little bitty drip in a giant ocean. Once you have the results, then it’s important to use Show You Care. Value your employees and listen to them. Employees respond well when you’re investing in them. It makes them feel cared for and more loyal. Tap Into Their Quirks. Match employee strengths with tasks. They’ll be stronger at their jobs. And they’ll be happier, which will make you happy too. Jessica stressed learning, thinking, and “keeping your ears and eyes open” to see how things play out. Consider How Talents Impact Relationship Building. Match your team members with clients carefully. When teammates and clients are a good mix, you can create a positive bounce in your business. Create a Culture of Trust. Encourage employees to speak up when they’re unhappy about tasks. They’ll feel trusted to apply their own strengths and to work around their weaknesses. This helps you to implement change to keep them happy. It will keep your clients happy as well. Feel The Strengths Love. Use employee strengths to solve differences. Jessica shows how to use understanding of a fellow employee’s strengths and weakness to solve conflict in the office. Why Strengths? According to Jessica, the benefit of understanding and utilizing strengths-based development is that you’ll be happier! If you are around people who enjoy what they’re doing, you’ll be happy and have more positive results. Resource of the Episode Check out Jessica’s weekly web TV show, Interview Connection TV and listen to her weekly Rhodes to Success podcast. You can also follow her ideas on Facebook and Twitter. Remember, using your strengths and those of your employees will benefit everyone. Your company will grow. Your employees will be happy. You will be happy. And according to Gallup research, teams who focus on strengths improve their productivity as much as 21%. “What in the World?:  A World Gone Mad” 1 Chronicles 12:32; 2 Timothy 3:1-9, 12-13   “ . . . the men of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what Israel should do . . .” 1 Chronicles 12:32   ·         How I view the world is critical to understanding what is going on in the world.  o   Another way of saying that is my position affects my perspective, and perspective shapes understanding.    How We Often View the World . . .   ·         Looking through the lens of Scripture is not just a good idea when it comes to understanding what’s going on in the world; it’s imperative. “The unfolding of Your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.”  Psalm 119:130 “For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”  Proverbs 2:6   ·         If I want to see the world properly, I must study the word diligently. o   It’s not about being a scholar of the word, but being a student of the word. (2 Timothy 2:15, 3:14-17)   What’s Really Going on in the World?   ·         What is going on in the world is everything the Bible claims will happen in the world. o   Eventually this world, this age, will come to an end. §  Jesus validated it. (Matthew 24) §  Scripture prophesies it. ·         “And it will come about in the last days . . .” (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Micah) ·         “Now the Spirit expressly says that in the later times . . .” (1 Timothy 4:1) ·         “But understand this, that in the last days . . .” (2 Timothy 3:1) o   In the last days there will come times of difficulty. (2 Timothy 3:1) §  19 Characteristics of the last days that Paul mentions in 2 Timothy 3:2-5   ·         The world scene will get worse, before it gets better. “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil people and imposters will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.”  2 Timothy 3:12-13   But It’s Not The End of the Story . . .   The glorious hope we have is found when we look through the lens of Scripture.
