At Summit 2025, Ardán also looks forward to announcing some of the exciting new and upcoming projects it is working on alongside its partners at Imirt and other organisations in Ireland and across Europe. The FÍS Games Summit 2025 will also be the place to see new and upcoming games via its exhibition space. The expanded event will also offer breakout rooms, roundtable discussions, and games pitching opportunities - truly the busiest and most varied FÍS Games Summit to date. My guest today is Alexis Kennedy, the founder of Failbetter Games, creator of Fallen London, creative director of Sunless Sea, and as of just a few days ago, the first ever guest writer for BioWare. We talk about how his love of narrative games was awakened playing Colossal Cave on the mainframe at the Oxford University Atmospheric Physics department, the wonder of table top gaming and how Dungeons & Dragons can become a full time job, whether or not the lore in Dark Souls was made up on the fly, the bold decision to leave his job in financial tech and found Failbetter games, and the perhaps even bolder decision to leave that in order to explore his creative process. There's also a bonus segment at the end we recorded just a few days ago about his relationship with BioWare, and how he landed the job as their first ever guest writer. After a week's absence due to various illnesses OLL returned to a studio missing one team member, who was away in Sweden. But which one was it? The mystery gets solved fairly early in the episode, this is why we're a videogame radio show and not a true crime podcast. As Dry January has been replaced by Drenched February we had a Super-Special Guest - James Chew from Failbetter Games. Their new game Sunless Skies came out two weeks ago so we thought we'd ask him what it's like developing a game world with an existing fanbase, what it's like moving from being a fan of the series to helping design it, and how does James' degree help in his videogame career. We clarified the Marioke franchise situation, went CD free (only one edit done in post, but more were arguably needed), tried to work out if Ste was an octopus, and spoke about the iphone a lot. It’s the fourteenth season of One Life Left! Miracles can happen if you believe in them! For instance, Ste has a tan and could potentially be djing at Ann’s wedding for up to 22.5 minutes! Oh, and the caretaker could forget to press play and record, thereby missing important chat from the beginning of the episode so had to make a seamless edit (sort of)! Miracles! Some people could argue that one such miracle would be Failbetter Games getting all of their Kickstarter money for Sunless Skies within one day, but we’re not too surprised by that as their games are rather excellent. And it was EXCLUSIVELY announced on One Life Left so it’s successful monetisation was assured. This week’s Super-Special Guest was Cash Decuir from - no! But yes! - Failbetter Games so we got to talk to him about how you write for a game like Sunless Skies, what lessons were learnt from their previous Kickstarters and which flying insects are a force for good. We had a debrief about our Marioke Live event, with the conclusion that it was excellent and that YOU should be there next time. Plus we raised enough money for Resonance that they’ll have no choice but to keep us on air. This week on the podcast I had a fantastic opportunity to meet with some of the team from FailBetter Games based in Greenwich, London. Alexis Kennedy co-founded the studio, and Cash DeCuir joined the team as a writer a little over a year ago. They are best known for their Subterranean Victorian Gothic narrative online game Fallen London, that was just launched on mobile as an iPhone iOS application. As of now, you can check out Fallen London in the App Store and there's a good deal of chance it's right there featured in the best games at the moment. Of course, you can also play the game directly as I used to when it was first released in late 2009 via the Fallen London website. I found out about the game years ago and immediately loved the beautiful writing and mysterious world to explore, as I prepared my initial lists of people I'd like to talk for the podcast, FailBetter Games were right there from the beginning. We talk about their gaming and design inspiration including tabletop roleplaying games and video games, what Fallen London is all about, Sunless Sea (another game available in the same universe) and much more during the episode. Slight warning with regards to language, there is a tiny bit of explicit language so maybe watch out if kids are around. Indie game creator Alexis Kennedy (Fallen London, Sunless Sea) of Failbetter Games plumbs the murky depths of games with Heath Corson (Bizarro, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis) as they discuss the role of Kickstarter in indie gaming, game pacing, managing world creation, how to keep game franchises fresh, oh, and cannibalism. Theres actually a fair amount of talk of cannibalism.
