This week, we chat with David about saving the whales, publishing your own game systems, and making a city feel corrupt, classy and discreet. David has built some very cool systems, and our conversation covers rules lawyering, game balance, and what it means for a table to tell a story together. For the first time in a long time, we don't spoil any media and we also don't ruin our changes at any sponsorships. This episode is heavy on references to other games! First and foremost, you should go check out David's Itch page where you can find Blood and Velvet and other game systems. David cites the following systems as inspiration:NoirlandiaFollowMobile Frame Zero: Firebrands (which we discussed with Prim last season)EpyllionWe also discuss a few worldbuilding systems:KingdomDialectFor the QueenMicroscope (which Jake and Reilly played way back in Season 1)The Quiet YearDavid also recommends Fallen London, Darkest Dungeon, Black Jack Justice, and Friends at the Table - especially the Partisan arc. Finally, if you're interested in learning how to code in Python, here's a decent place to get started. These week's intro comes from Seattle Dungeon Master Bryan Erickson! Thanks for the fun intro.David composed and recorded the theme music for this week's monologue. As always, Reilly wrote the main theme for the podcast. Utvecklaren Failbetter har även släppt roguelikespelen Sunless Sea och Sunless Skies, samt visual novel-spelet Mask of the Rose, som alla utspelar sig i samma fantastiska värld.Häng med när vi diskuterar världsbygget, hur man bäst skriver "konstigt" och vad Twitter en gång i tiden betydde för den här säregna spelupplevelsen.Gäst: Eira A Ekre

I must admit, there was an element of selfishness involved in this podcast. I'm currently doing a creative writing course in my spare time (rather than in my news stories, ho ho) and one of the things I'm struggling with, weird as it is to admit, is the idea that I can write anything. I don't have to be bound by the rules of this world, or any world, or any rules. I can conceive of something totally and utterly new. And that's... I still can't quite wrap my head around it. But my guest on the podcast today, Cassandra Khaw, has long made their peace with this, producing works of - usually - pitch black horror that I'm not sure I'd have the nerve to imagine. The most famous of their pieces is probably the novella Nothing But Blackened Teeth, which was a USA Today bestseller when it came out roughly a year ago. So I wanted to find out from Cassandra, who seems to imagine new stories at the speed other people think of things to eat for dinner, where their ideas came from and how to shape them from there. I also wanted to find out where their life-long love of horror came from - and I was treated to a wonderful real-life Malaysian horror story when I asked. Cassandra isn't only a horror writer, though. They've written for Eurogamer and now they help write games. They've contributed to games like Fallen London and Sunless Skies and Falcon Age, and more recently were working at Ubisoft Montreal on Hyperspace (and some undisclosed projects) and, to get us right up to date, Gotham Knights. Cassandra's already gone on to two new game projects they're not able to talk about yet. They sound busy, right? Well, let's not forget their debut collection Breakable Things, coming out on 8th November. We talk about it in this podcast and it sounds great; it revolves around a theme of people pushing back against the world, like a werewolf out for revenge, or mermaids - who were pulled out of the ocean by humans, and impregnated - doing the same. There are some quieter explorations of grief too, including one tale that's personal and close to Cassandra's heart. They have two other books coming out next year, too. One is a twisted mermaid novella called The Salt Grows Heavy, due May 2023, and the other is a collaboration with Richard Kadrey called The Dead Take the A Train, due March. "Pathologic workaholic" is how they'd describe themselves, and on this evidence, I'd have to agree! Incidentally, the scary Malaysian film Cassandra mentions at the beginning is Impetigore, and the book recommendation is The Least of My Scars, by Stephen Graham Jones. Oh and apologies for a bit of keyboard clacking at the beginning of the recording - we relocate quickly to a quieter area. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Gil and Sen sit down with game designer and chronicler Aaron A. Reed to talk about his project 50 Years of Text Games, in which he covered one important game for each year between 1971 and 2020. The project will be made into a book. SHOW NOTES 2m21s: The Oregon Trail 3m13s: Gil mentions a bunch of games that Aaron wrote about: Adventure, Hunt the Wumpus, games made with Inform and Twine, 80 Days, Fallen London. 9m22s: Sen's childhood PET computer, Gil's childhood Panasonic computer 10m24s: The game Adventure, the company Infocom, and the rise of Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs). 14m16s: You can probably add board games like Gloomhaven to this list too! 17m28s: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy game, with the infamous Babel Fish puzzle. Here is the text of the Infocom hint guide for that puzzle. Click "Next Answer" for the next step. Each step has spoilers, obviously! Also, Gil was wrong, it was "only" 30 steps. 18m33s: Myst 20m07s: Infocom's "feelies." Several fan sites have information on them; this is one. 20m38s: Infocom's game Suspended had a ridiculously cool cover; a plastic injection-molded face with cut-outs for the eyes. The eyes you see on the cover are printed on cardboard beneath the face. Because the images for the eyes are recessed, they will seem to follow you if you walk past the game on the shelf. 22m54s: Robert Lafore's "Interactive Fiction" 26m46s: St. Bride's School 30m45s: The Oz Project 33m09s: The digital game Façade. 36m00s: Adventuron, Choice of Games' ChoiceScript, Inkle 37m00s: So Far, Photopia, Galatea, Trinity 42m01s: The harrowing dramatic film The Sweet Hereafter, which was an inspiration for Photopia. 44m46s: The seminal ARG The Beast, created to promote the film AI 49m47s: Here's the article Gil was talking about. Also, Porpentine's game With Those We Love Alive 52m35s: PixelBerry's interactive romances Choices, of which The Freshman is a story in the game. 56m10s: Ludology 151, where Geoff and Gil discuss what a game actually is. 57m57s: Aaron's book Subcutanean, which is different for everyone who buys it. 58m51s: Sen is likely thinking of Cain's Jawbone, a puzzle released in 1934 by Edward Mathers, under the pseudonym Torquemada. 1h01m27s: Archives of the Sky 1h03m03s: The short IF game 9:05. It's really quick; play it if you can! 1h04m10s: Star Saga One: Beyond the Boundary. 1h05m05s: Above & Below, Near & Far, Tales of the Arabian Nights 1h06m02s: Aaron's 50 Years of Text Games book

Join Alexis and Lottie for a run-down of forbidden knowledge: the type that's ipso facto dangerous and the type that's dangerous because of what you can do with it. My guest today is Alexis Kennedy, the founder of Failbetter Games, creator of Fallen London, creative director of Sunless Sea, and as of just a few days ago, the first ever guest writer for BioWare. We talk about how his love of narrative games was awakened playing Colossal Cave on the mainframe at the Oxford University Atmospheric Physics department, the wonder of table top gaming and how Dungeons & Dragons can become a full time job, whether or not the lore in Dark Souls was made up on the fly, the bold decision to leave his job in financial tech and found Failbetter games, and the perhaps even bolder decision to leave that in order to explore his creative process. There's also a bonus segment at the end we recorded just a few days ago about his relationship with BioWare, and how he landed the job as their first ever guest writer. This week, Chris O'Regan chats to Haley Uyrus of Failbetter Games about how Sunless Skies was developed and how it compliments their other two titles. Failbetter Games have created three games that are based in the same alternate reality universe where the laws of physics we enjoy in our own do not apply. These three games are Fallen London, Sunless Seas and Sunless Skies. The last title is the subject of this episode of The Sausage Factory and show host and producer Chris O'Regan chats to Haley Uyrus about how Sunless Skies was developed and how it compliments the other two titles. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode209.mp3 The Sausage Factory 209 was edited by Chris O'Regan

Today we're talking with Marc (author, game writer, designer, and previously worked at Valve on Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 Episodes 1 & 2, and Dota) and Chris (narrative director at Failbetter Games, previously a staff writer and head writer, and has written on Fallen London, The Last Court, Sunless Skies, and Sunless Seas) about storytelling transmedia synergy in 1990s Japan, what makes a good narrative director, planning a career as a writer, core skills writers should have, getting into writing with a team too early in your career, keys to good worldbuilding, creating the illusion of depth, the poop caves of Nottingham, having end goals in mind as a team, trusting your teammates, avoiding your first thoughts in writing, how expectations of more dialogue can put the wrong weight on characters, big failures, changes in writing processes, and player literacy. Cultist Simulator is a difficult game to classify - it’s a card-based strategy game, but also a Lovecraftian weird fiction engine that focuses on discovery through exploration and dreaming. Ian spoke with creators Alexis Kennedy and Lottie Bevan, who collaborated on games like Sunless Sea and Fallen London prior to founding their own studio to make experimental games like Cultist Simulator. They discuss their literary influences, game design goals, and what they’ve learned over the course of the game’s development. Cultist Simulator will launch on Steam May 31.

SUNLESS SEA is a top-down exploration game, where you are the captain of a ship exploring the vast unknown of Fallen London - a sunken world The game was released in Feb 2015, but was recently re-released on ioS. You have to carefully manage your food, fuel and terror, as you find new islands, shipwrecks and cities. Intricate storytelling and backstories of your crew are revealed as you play (and die) repeatedly, as you explore the Neath. Will you leave a legacy of sea captains? Or will your ship vanish into the depths of the ocean, remembered by no one. Fight sea monsters. Die repeatedly. And never, ever look too closely at the zea below. Summer break is over, but One Life Left is back, Back, BACK! And it's been a long hot summer, being a three-button Monday. So what did we do over the holiday? Simon walked past Hugh Dennis, Ann had too much coffee and Ste did something that may get mentioned during the show. We also guested on other podcasts in an attempt to become videogames answer to Sean Paul/Ludacris. Except in most cases we were too hot for release, we blame the three undone buttons. And in a break from our break-returning tradition we had a Super-Special Guest this week. In fact we had a real Scanters' Choice between comedy's Robin Ince and Failbetter Games' Hannah Flynn. The criteria we had for this week's SSG was how long they would be prepared to talk about Fallen London coming out on Android and about the forthcoming release of Zubmariner - the expansion to the amazing Sunless Sea. Oh, and their name had to fit the title for the episode that we had already chosen. We should get Robin on later in the series though. We also spoke to Hannah about how annoying the internet can be at times. Come on internet, buck your ideas up. There was clarification on Keith Stuart's dedications, doubts about a few of our letter writers and full UNEDITED chat about Ste's RPOO (possibly spelt incorrectly). So that's One Life Left. Recorded on a Monday, podcasted on a Wednesday. It's not like anything major like Mario being announced for the iphone would happen by then. Right? Cheerio! Dan spent all week playing through one area in Dark Souls 3, and Dudley keeps going to prison in Fallen London. Bethesda has announced the release date for Far Harbor, the next DLC for Fallout 4. They go off on a tangent about game dreams, Spacechem, Infinifactory, and TIS-100. The reveal trailer for Battlefield 1 has been released. Dudley provided 5 hours of research data on Sea Hero Quest. Dan has pre-ordered his flight controls in preparation for No Man’s Sky. Dark Souls - The Board Game is in its final week, and Dan is excited by the increasing amount of stuff he will receive from it.
Matt has been dabbling with Clash Royale and the Nioh alpha demo, while Quinns has become obsessed with Hitman and Fallen London. We then cap off the podcast with a brief chat about what it's like to be faced with the prospect of BEING OLD.
Dan and Dudley continue to play Dark Souls 3 and Fallen London. Dan played Dominant Species and Moniker. Dudley checked out Sunless Sea and has backed a kickstarter for a Trinus 3D printer.
This week on the podcast I had a fantastic opportunity to meet with some of the team from FailBetter Games based in Greenwich, London. Alexis Kennedy co-founded the studio, and Cash DeCuir joined the team as a writer a little over a year ago. They are best known for their Subterranean Victorian Gothic narrative online game Fallen London, that was just launched on mobile as an iPhone iOS application. As of now, you can check out Fallen London in the App Store and there's a good deal of chance it's right there featured in the best games at the moment. Of course, you can also play the game directly as I used to when it was first released in late 2009 via the Fallen London website. I found out about the game years ago and immediately loved the beautiful writing and mysterious world to explore, as I prepared my initial lists of people I'd like to talk for the podcast, FailBetter Games were right there from the beginning. We talk about their gaming and design inspiration including tabletop roleplaying games and video games, what Fallen London is all about, Sunless Sea (another game available in the same universe) and much more during the episode. Slight warning with regards to language, there is a tiny bit of explicit language so maybe watch out if kids are around. Imagine designing rollercoasters for a living. That's what Bradley Wynne, lead creative artist at Merlin Magic Making, gets to do. A life-long adrenalin junkie, he's now heading up the team for Thorpe Park's biggest ever launch, Derren Brown's Ghost Train. Find out how sounds, smells and touch can enhance the experience of riding a rollercoaster; how the fallout from the tragedy on The Smiler has affected the theming process, and how Bradley used a very boring interest in planning application data to his advantage to secure his dream job. Also this episode: Ollie Peart debates our 'no spoilers' culture following the return of Game Of Thrones, the declining sales of pasta, and the enduring power of dial-up. Meanwhile, in The Foxhole, Alix Fox considers whether having sexual fantasies about your schooldays makes you a paedophile. (It doesn't). Our record of the week is Damien Jurado's new single, Qachina, out May 6th; and this episode has been sponsored by Fallen London, the brand new text adventure game for iOS. How DO you make the perfect cup of coffee? Do you grind? Do you press? Do you froth? One man who knows is 'Coffee Masters' champion Ben Morrow, of Melbourne-based coffee roasters St. Ali. In this episode, Olly meets him at Hackney Coffee Company to discuss how to buy coffee, how to prepare it, and how to capture the essence of a Columbian farm in a cup...
