In episode seven, we are pleased to feature executive director of the Workers' Action Centre, Deena Ladd. In her keynote address for the 33rd annual Labour Fair at Toronto's George Brown College, No One Left Behind: Building a Workers' First Emergency Response to the Tariff Crisis that Unites Us, Ladd discusses the current trade war, the dangers facing workers and a solidarity-driven plan that puts workers first. Reflecting on what's needed in a workers' first approach to the tariff crisis, Ladd says: “Our communities are already in trouble. And we know that the tariffs imposed are gonna have a ripple impact, far worse than the pandemic's… We desperately need a government strategy that has learned from these past economic crises to ensure that no one gets left behind. ..To make sure that when you are providing supports, that they first of all have to be adequate. That they're not institutionalizing poverty. That they're accessible … And that they're structured in a way that doesn't unintentionally punish people after the fact." About today's speaker:  Deena Ladd has been working to improve wages and working conditions in sectors of work that are dominated with low-wages, violations of rights, precarious and temp work for over 30 years. She has worked to support and develop grassroots training, education and organizing to build the power of workers with groups such as the Fight for $15 and Fairness Campaign, Decent Work and Health Network, the Migrant Rights Network and Justice for Workers. Ladd is one of the founders and executive director of the Toronto Workers' Action Centre. The Workers' Action Centre organizes to improve wages and working conditions with low-waged workers, women, racialized and immigrant workers in precarious jobs that face discrimination, violations of rights and no benefits in the workplace. Louisville became the first city in Kentucky to pass a Fairness Ordinance protecting members of the LGBTQ community 25 years ago.To mark that important milestone and to discuss 2024 victories at the Kentucky Statehouse, the Access Louisville podcast sat down with Chris Hartman, executive director of the Fairness Campaign, for an interview as the organization also celebrates Pride Month. Hartman told us 1999 was a landmark year for LGBTQ rights in Kentucky and, of course here in Louisville, where the Fairness Campaign had worked, built grassroots support, political support and then ultimately Board of Aldermen support to finally — after almost a decade —pass the original Fairness Ordinance. It was the first in Kentucky and among the first in the nation to protect LGBTQ folks from discrimination. Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First and available on popular podcast services such as Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Guest: Charles Smith, Professor at the University of Saskatchewan and co-author of Unions in Court: Organized Labour and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Charles provides some historical context for the labour movement's relationship with the legal system and the struggle in building on these legal battles while also building up rank and file power. https://www.ubcpress.ca/unions-in-court @ProfSmithSask Right now Manitoba Federation of Labour is relying very much on the courts to combat Bills 28 and 29. Bill 28 legislates a two year wage freeze for public sector unions after each contracts expires, followed by a 0.75 per cent increase in the third year and 1 per cent increase in the fourth. MFL recently filed an injunction against the wage freeze which was denied. Bill 29, the Health Sector Bargaining Review Act, cuts the number of bargaining units from 183 to seven and thus reduces the number of collective agreements or contracts with employees. The bill essentially pits health care unions against each other vying for membership of health care workers, who are now able to choose new representation in the restructuring of bargaining units. Also in this episode: Minimum wage increases across the Prairies, with Alberta being the first in the country to attain a $15 minimum wage. Alberta and Saskatchewan still hover around 11. Strange Fruit #176: Faith After Violence

When we on #TeamStrangeFruit heard about the shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando last Sunday morning, we reached out to each other. Throughout that day, we reached out to our community, our friends at the Fairness Campaign, and our counterparts across the river at Jeffersonville Pride, and helped create the beautiful vigil on the Big Four Bridge. In the week that's followed, we find ourselves reaching out to the people in our lives who are wise, and who maintain their ability to love in the face of hate and violence. One of those folks is Reverend Alvin Herring, friend to the show and LGBTQ ally (and the officiant of Kaila and Missy's wedding, earlier this year!). It's been a week since the shooting. Life goes on, but nothing feels normal, and maybe it never will again - at least not like it was before. So instead of recording a regular episode, we just brought Reverend Al into the studio, and he and Kaila had a conversation about faith, hate, love, recovery, and support. This week we bring you that conversation, and we hope it is as healing for you as it was for us. Thanks for listening, and we'll be back with a regular show next week.

The Kentucky General Assembly just wrapped up its 2015 session, and some LGBTQ-related bills were under consideration. Chris Hartman from the Fairness Campaign joins us this week to talk about the proposed legislation—what passed, and what didn't. Hartman also fills us in on a Fairness vote in the Bardstown, KY city council (pictured). The city council opted not to add gender identity and sexual orientation protections to the city-county human rights ordinance. And you may have seen a Buzzfeed article last week about Louisville murder victim Sherman Edwards, and whether the LMPD is trying to cover up Edwards' identity as a trans woman. Chris Hartman has seen the court records and says, while police statements may have been insensitive to trans issues, the truth about Edwards' identity and the motivation for the crime is not so clear cut. And in our Juicy Fruit segment, we address the racist chant that got Sigma Alpha Epsilon ejected from the University of Oklahoma, and how a morning show panel blamed the incident on hip hop music. In a development that happened after we taped the show, the fraternity is now considering suing the university for its dismissal.

Keith Brooks was waiting for a bus while on traveling in Oslo, Norway, when he was approached by two men who asked if he is gay. When he said yes, the men began to beat him, and a third man hit him with a bottle, cutting his face and head. Keith is a friend to the show, and our colleague at the Fairness Campaign. He joined us to describe what happened, and the aftermath—both legal and emotional. You can keep up with Keith and this story (and his many other travel adventures) on twitter at @keithbrooks. Miserable summer camp experiences are a staple in sitcoms and movies, where letters to home complain of mosquitos, inedible food, and obnoxious roommates. But for LGBTQ kids, the reality is often a lot less funny, and camp can be a scary place if you've been singled out as different.  So teaming up with GLSENand with support from NBA Cares, friends to the show Darnell Moore and Wade Davis are spearheading a brand new basketball camp this year—one designed for LGBTQ kids and their allies. The camp is free and features a whole roster of NBA stars dropping by. It's called YOU Belong: LGBTQA Youth Sports and Leadership Initiative, and Darnell took a few minutes on the eve of the camp's opening to tell us how it came about. While we had him on the phone, we also spoke about his article in this month's issue of The Advocate. They focused their entire July issue on LGBTQ people of color, and Darnell's article related some of his experiences of being 'too gay' in black spaces and 'too black' in gay spaces.  In our main interview this week, we meet activist and author Chris Crass. His new book is called Toward Collective Liberation: Anti-Racist Organizing, Feminist Praxis, and Movement Building Strategy, and it features an interview with someone whose name is very familiar to Louisville's social justice community: Carla Wallace. In case you're new to town, Carla is a long-time activist, co-founder of the Fairness Campaign, and founder of Showing Up for Racial Justice. Carla told us of a time when LGBTQ activists in Louisville threatened to stop contributing to the campaign if any of the money was used in anti-racism efforts. We've come a long way since then, but our chat with Carla and Chris shows that we also have a long way to go. Chris Crass is in town this Sunday to celebrate the book's release. He and Carla had so many eye-opening things to say, we decided to split the interview into two parts; join us next week to hear the rest. What's juiciest in Louisville this week is the ongoing competition for national Entertainer of the Year. In the spirit of the event, Dr. Story offers etiquette tips for drag shows (hint: tipping=life).

It continues to shock me that in a group of oppressed people (like the transgender community) how much there is oppression/pre-judgment/racism in our community.  You would think a person that has been pre-judged simply for how they dress would be a little more understanding about people being pre-judged on the color of their skin.  Well, this show is going to open some eyes (if we have open ears and hearts) about the race issues in and about the transgender community.  I will have two guests that are good friends of mine that will offer a perspective on this topic that might be a little direct and maybe even difficult for some to hear but that is needed.  Jaison Gardner and Monica Roberts join me for this very important topic.  Jaison is a community activist and organizer in the Louisville area and a board member of the Fairness Campaign  along with a co-founder and President of the Derby City Black Pride Organization.  Monica Roberts is our other vrey special guest.  She is a trans human rights advocate and blogger.   Many of you might know her blog, "TransGriot" Blog.  Monica is also involved in activist work in the Houston, TX area.  Listeners can call in live during the show.  Thanks!
