Joan Young wrote her first story about the outdoors at the age of 7, titled “The Adventures of Skippy the Field Mouse.” Joan's life has always revolved around the outdoors from walking the woods with her mother to graduating with a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan and developing a career as a wetland specialist. Now she is a writer of books, articles, and poems. This love of outdoor adventure drove her to ride her bicycle from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean in 1986. In 2010, she became the first woman to complete the North Country Scenic Trail on foot, a hike of 4,395 miles from Vermont to North Dakota. Over 10 years later, at the age of 75, she conquered the trail again, which had changed and now covered over 4,800 miles. You can learn more about Joan at https://booksleavingfootprints.com/ .

Danielle DePalma is a world-class mixing engineer, the production manager of the legendary Bowery Ballroom in NYC, and a dear friend. She's toured with, recorded, mixed, and produced concerts for practically everyone you can name so it was tough to pick only a few, but in this episode we focus on the music of past and current collaborators Mercy Bell, Sharon Van Etten, Hailey Wojcik, Field Mouse, Christina Picciano, and Emily King. Danielle also pens eye-opening articles on concert management and production on SoundGirls.org, and we get into the important conversation of representation in the music industry. Her attitude toward prioritizing personal well-being extends beyond herself and benefits the artists she works well and the concert-goers who have the good fortune of experiencing one of her productions. You can read more about Danielle and her time at Purchase College (which we somehow didn't touch on in our brief interview) in Women in Sound, written by Madeleine Campbell.

Bassist extraordinaire and legit bodybuilder Saysha Heinzman joins me (Lily) for the inaugural episode of this wretched series to discuss Don Bluth's 1982 film, "The Secret of NIMH". We get down to the basics of Bluth's rise to animation fame and talk about the old-school techniques he used to make this movie. We ask hard-hitting questions like, "Who's the hottest rat? Why do all girl animals wear bows? What does Disney's 'Robin Hood' (1973) have to do with ANY of this?" The answers will shock you! _______________________ Saysha Heinzman plays bass in Field Mouse and is a personal bodybuilding trainer in Brooklyn, NY.
Jon and Kristin talk about the importance of music as a therapeutic modality in mental health. Jon shares his unique way of working with children and adults to help them get comfortable and let the healing in!In Johannesburg, South Africa, Jon grew up hearing that “children should be seen and not heard” which helped inspire his life’s work. In addition to be a leading advocate for music therapy and education reform, his ultimate goals are to help children to have a larger platform to be listened to and understood while also inspiring the Child Archetype in people of all ages, particularly adults; parents, teachers, care givers, mental health professionals and beyond.Rooted in indie pop, the music of his Grammy winning Ageless: Songs for the Child Archetype consists of playful and imaginative arrangements which are thoughtful and complex yet deliver a simple message about striving for balance and harmony. The Child Archetype is always being expressed, as Jon puts it “either through shadow (childish) or light (child like).” This unique project offers a beautiful sensory experience that is full of heart and serves a guiding message to ignite personal growth, positivity and creative expression. Children from Jon’s private practice are featured on the album, which provided a fantastic opportunity to empower them with a chance to be heard by many. His recent interview on Andrew and Polly’s Sirius XM Kids Place live show has sparked enthusiasm throughout the community. Jon Samson is the first native South African to win the award for Best Children’s Album. His other accolades include taking first place twice in the International Songwriting Competition, Parents Gold Choice, and receiving the John Lennon Songwriting Contest grand prize. Field Mouse have been a favorite band here at BTRtoday for several years now - while much has changed for the band (members, cities, styles of music) what’s still maintained all this time is the massively enjoyable musical chemistry stemming from Rachel Browne’s sweet vocals and Andrew Futral’s wily guitar antics. The addition of Zoe Browne on vocals adds a layer of perfect harmonies that only siblings can produce in just that way, rounded out by a super tight rhythm section, the band is operating to its full potential these days, with perfectly hooky, emotional songs that we just can’t get enough of. They joined us at Serious Business Music in Brooklyn for this session. Flying in the night. Eyes set: run! Heart beat ever faster. Sore gracefully. One more chase. Swoop down. Run swiftly. Days gone bye. New world found. Others… her kind. Exist. Still high above the clouds. Poised to strike. So she ran… Plucked from the ground. One then another. Always, wondering… If she'd never recover.
