Jen Blazina: Casting Lost Memories and Forgotten Voices in Glass

Perceiving her role as a record keeper, artist Jen Blazina captures the essence of lost memories and forgotten voices. Through her work, she holds onto fragments of personal history, transforming common objects into poignant relics of the past. Her visual narratives express universal concepts of memory, inviting audiences to connect with the stories she preserves.  Blazina states: “Memory is embodied in everything around us: in our culture, beliefs, objects, and ourselves. Discarded objects and those passed down to me become personal keepsakes and icons of the past, rather than overlooked or regarded as useless. My collections represent a sense of holding onto a place in time. By re-creating these keepsakes, I re-cast their history into my own voice.” A sculptor and printmaker who uses glass as her primary medium, Blazina currently resides in Philadelphia where she is a working artist and professor at Drexel University in the College of Media Arts and Design. Blazina's work can be found in multiple collections such as the Neuberger Museum of Art, The Imagine Museum, The Cranbrook Museum of Art, and the Corning Museum of Glass, to name a few.  The artist has been awarded numerous residencies including: the Corning Artist in Residency at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York; GAPP Residency at Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, OH; Bezalel Art and Design Academy in Jerusalem, Israel; and the Creative Glass Center of America in Millville, NJ.  She has also been awarded prestigious grants such as the Bessie and Louis Stein Fellowship; Independence Foundation Grant; and a National Endowment for the Arts Grant. Nominated for the 2022 Pew Fellowship Award, Blazina received her M.F.A. in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art, her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College in New York and her B.F.A., cum laude, from the State University of New York at Purchase College.  Blazina is represented by Habatat Detroit Fine Art in Royal Oak, MI; Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville, NC; Vetri Glass Gallery in Seattle, WA; Kittrell Riffkind Gallery in Dallas, TX; Bullseye Projects in Portland, OR; and Koelsch Gallery in Houston, TX.  In 2025, Blazina will have work on view at the Bergstrom Mahler Museum of Glass, Neenah, WI, in New Art on the Block: Selections from the Permanent Collections, October 31, 2024 – April 6, 2025; in Object Memory, Jen Blazina and Ash Smith at 20*20 Gallery, Lansdowne, PA, February 22 –  April 15; in Through a Window Darkly, The Works of Jen Blazina at the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass, April 24 to October 5, 2025; in Collections at Blue Spiral 1 Gallery, Asheville, NC, May 2 – June 25; and in Glass 53: International Glass Invitational at Habatat Fine Art Gallery, Royal Oak, MI, May 1 – September 6. She will teach Alternative Approaches to Printmaking and Glass at Corning Museum of Glass Studios, Corning, NY, June 16 – June 21; and In Pursuit of Light: Kiln Casting at Glass Furnace, Istanbul, Turkey, August 25 – August 29. Says Blazina: “As an artist, I am intrigued with the idea that what is precious to one person will be discarded by another. My work is influenced by commonplace possessions, familial vignettes and photographs. These evoke an ephemeral sense of past memories. Whether found in a second-hand shop or passed down from my family, I am often attracted to and captivated by the lost beauty of subtle images and materials. By re-creating and casting momentos in glass and metal, I can capture and hold on to another time in the past. Photographs and chosen objects allude to narratives of fleeting moments.” UPCOMING EVENTS New Art On The Block: Selections From The Permanent Collections Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass Neenah, WI Dates: October 31 – April 6, 2025 Object Memory, Jen Blazina and Ash Smith 20*20 Gallery Lansdowne, PA Dates: February 22 – April 15 Through a Window Darkly, The Works of Jen Blazina Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass Neenah, WI Opening: April 24 Dates: April 24 to October 5 Collections Blue Spiral 1 Gallery Asheville, NC Opening Reception: May 2, 5 – 7 pm Dates: May 2 – June 25 Glass 53: International Glass Invitational Habatat Fine Art Gallery Royal Oak, MI Opening: May 3, 8 pm Dates: May 1- September 6 Alternative Approaches to Printmaking and Glass Corning Museum of Glass Studios Corning, NY Dates: June 16- June 21 In Pursuit of Light: Kiln Casting Glass Furnace Istanbul, Turkey Dates: August 25 – August 29

Episode 459 / Dana Piazza Dana Piazza is a visual artist who creates abstract drawings and paintings on paper, panel, and canvas through a process of open-ended experimentation, repeating simple marks with brushes, markers, pens, and nibs. The meticulous forms that Piazza conjures on his flat surfaces depict the illusion of depth and movement; they seem voluminous, carrying significant visual weight. He approaches each work as though it were both a puzzle and an experiment, and lets the materials and tools determine the process.   Dana lives and works in Lenox, Massachusetts. He looks forward to featuring at Dallas Art Fair and having his first solo exhibition with TURLEY, by whom he is represented, in the Spring of 2025. His work has previously appeared in solo exhibitions at Art Austerlitz in Austerlitz, New York; Thompson Giroux Gallery in Chatham, New York; and Jennifer Terzian Gallery in Litchfield, Connecticut. His numerous group exhibitions include “Flat Files at OyG” at Ortega y Gasset Projects in Brooklyn; “Concentrated” at Galerie Manqué in Brooklyn; “Art on Paper” at Muriel Guépin Gallery in New York City; and “Guilty Pleasures” at Geoffrey Young Gallery in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. MICHELLE BIRSKY AND KEVIN HENTHORN Most recently known for scoring The Netflix anime series Terminator Zero, The Lesbian Bar Project (documentary series, Roku) and Mother/Android (feature film, Hulu), Michelle Birsky and Kevin Henthorn are a married, composing duo based in Los Angeles. Their music is contemporary and emotional, often incorporating found sounds and vocals with a strong electro-acoustic pull. With years spent in the New York indie music scene, Michelle and Kevin bring a unique perspective to composition, drawing inspiration from composers like Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and Mica Levi. Michelle, a vocalist, producer, and electronic musician, and Kevin, an accomplished guitarist and vocalist, bridge their talents into a cohesive, well-rounded entity that creates emotionally-driven, electro-acoustic music. The two have always had a strong interest in film scoring, but they came to it from different backgrounds. Michelle graduated from Kenyon College with a degree in music. Kevin graduated from the Film Conservatory at Purchase College. Michelle and Kevin met in Brooklyn in 2014 and for the majority of their 20's they pursued their own musical projects: Michelle, a synth-pop artist project called Birch, and Kevin, a folk-rock project called Cape Francis. During that time, Michelle also focused on film composing, writing for sync and working under esteemed composer Elliot Goldenthal. When the pandemic hit in March 2020, the pair decided to take the leap and move from NY to LA to focus on film composing, and soon were brought on to score Mother/Android, which premiered on Hulu in December, 2021. In this week's episode, we welcome Kris Graves (and his associate Frank Francis) to our gallery and onto the podcast to discuss a multitude of topics including life with a baby, the charm and uniqueness of Queens, the origins of Hip Hop, Graves' early commissioned work, museums' and cultural institutions' feelings about NFTs, Black Lives Matter, the role that race plays in art, history, and society, working day jobs, and how NFTs can be gate keeper resistant, and what is next for Graves. Originally recorded February 13, 2023 Kris Graves (b. 1982 New York, NY) is an artist and publisher based in New York and California. Graves creates artwork that deals with societal problems and aims to use art as a means to inform people about cultural issues. Using a mix of conceptual and documentary practices, Graves photographs the subtleties of societal power and its impact on the built environment. He explores how capitalism and power have shaped countries -- and how that can be seen and experienced in everyday life. Graves also works to elevate the representation of people of color in the fine art canon; and to create opportunities for conversation about race, representation, and urban life. He photographs to preserve memory. Graves received his BFA in Visual Arts from S.U.N.Y. Purchase College and has been published and exhibited globally, including Museum of Modern Art, New York; Getty Institute, Los Angeles; and National Portrait Gallery in London, England; among others. Permanent collections include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Getty Institute, Schomburg Center, Whitney Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Brooklyn Museum; and The Wedge Collection, Toronto; amongst others. Frank Frances (b.1983 Columbia, SC) is a NYC-based artist whose work challenges the everyday perceptions of memories and prejudice with close studies of photography's materiality and dynamics; he is no stranger to being both voyeur and subject. He has shown in solo and group exhibitions domestically and internationally at Sasha Wolf Gallery, The Studio Museum of Harlem, Glasshouse, Carriage Trade and Werkstadt Graz to name a few. Reviews and features of their work have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, Vice, NPR, ArtInfo, Bomblog, and Bloomberg BusinessWeek among others. The team built the software around an almost universally accepted framework:There is one framework that almost every organization kind of agrees on, and that is called the theory of change. The theory of change process essentially tracks your resources, looks at the problem, sets certain assumptions, tracks activities and benchmarks, and sees the immediate mid-term and long-term outcomes of the work. With that framework underpinning the Quantibly platform, it is being adopted by a wide range of users, from large corporations to smaller nonprofits.AI Episode SummaryQuantifiable strives to standardize impact reporting for organizations to demonstrate and improve their social impact. Cyrus Kazi's superpower is empathy.* The Superpowers for Good Show is hosting Cyrus Kazi, the CEO and founder of Quantibly, a company that focuses on impact data gathering for nonprofits, social enterprises, and corporate social responsibility departments.* Quantibly is the first platform to collect and report impact data, standardizing the process and making it presentable for stakeholders to see the real impact of their investments.* The platform incorporates an impact framework that tracks resources, benchmarks, and outcomes to provide a holistic view of an organization's impact.* Cyrus has been working with nonprofits, NGOs, governments, and philanthropies for 25 years, leading him to develop Quantibly as a solution for the lack of standardized and verifiable impact data in the sector.* The Quantibly platform simplifies data entry and allows organizations to track outcomes over time, even if the data is collected years later.* The platform also helps foundations and philanthropies monitor the impact of their investments in real time, enabling them to intervene and support grantees as needed.* Quantibly can connect with other data formats, making it easy for organizations to import existing data and avoid double work.* Empathy is Kazi's superpower, which drives his work and motivates him to create value and make a positive impact.* Kazi believes that looking at the world through a value creation lens, rather than a transactional one, enhances empathy and leads to meaningful actions.* Kazi's personal and professional experiences in child welfare influenced his work on Quantibly, as he aimed to use data to protect children from abuse and neglect. How to Develop Empathy As a SuperpowerTo understand the value of empathy, Cyrus explains:We don't live in isolation. Right? So for many, many years, I think either through some philosophical evolution that I had, I started to realize that whatever I am going to do, I can't determine the end result. But as long as my empathy is there, my intentions are there; at least if I can do one good thing for my fellow human beings, I think that will make an impact. So it's a it's a thought process. He helped me see empathy through a more pragmatic lens I'd never considered before. His view of it is that of a visionary CEO. “I don't necessarily think that I look at the world like I used to when I was much younger–from a transactional point of view. I look at it as a value creation point of view. I think that that helps me.”Seeing empathy as a tool for value creation in business akin to strategy is a profound insight for a social entrepreneur.By following Cyrus's example and advice, you can make empathy a practical skill in your portfolio. Danielle DePalma is a world-class mixing engineer, the production manager of the legendary Bowery Ballroom in NYC, and a dear friend. She's toured with, recorded, mixed, and produced concerts for practically everyone you can name so it was tough to pick only a few, but in this episode we focus on the music of past and current collaborators Mercy Bell, Sharon Van Etten, Hailey Wojcik, Field Mouse, Christina Picciano, and Emily King. Danielle also pens eye-opening articles on concert management and production on SoundGirls.org, and we get into the important conversation of representation in the music industry. Her attitude toward prioritizing personal well-being extends beyond herself and benefits the artists she works well and the concert-goers who have the good fortune of experiencing one of her productions. You can read more about Danielle and her time at Purchase College (which we somehow didn't touch on in our brief interview) in Women in Sound, written by Madeleine Campbell.
