In a world full of messages about how to eat, and what to eat, and what NOT to eat…this gets even more challenging when we're talking about children.   We all want the kids in our lives to grow up having a positive relationship with food, and good health and nutrition.     Whether you're a parent, an aunt, a grandparent, a teacher or just an adult who wants to understand how your own childhood messages impacted your relationship with food, this episode is for you, and you're going to love hearing what my special guest has to say.    I'm chatting today with fellow dietitian, Nicole Cruz, who is the founder of Nourish Together, a shame-free approach to family nutrition focused on instilling food and body trust.   Nicole explains how to help kids navigate things like sugar (gasp!), weight gain, balanced eating, and diet culture.    She also shares the most common mistakes that she sees parents and caregivers making in the way that they're talking about and approaching food with kids, and the ways that we can help kids grow up to be “healthy” (she actually calls it “competent”) eaters.    Trust me, you're not going to want to miss out on the wisdom and actionable steps that you'll hear from this conversation with Nicole.    Episode Highlights:   What is the parents' job with food, and what is the kids' job with food - and why it's important to distinguish the two to prevent battles over food, endless snacking and eating their veggies. How much sugar is too much? And how do you have limits with sweets and snacks without it being restrictive and setting your kid up for disordered eating? What to do if you or your pediatrician are concerned about your child's weight, and how to prevent this from turning into a lifetime of dieting and body image concerns (while still addressing their health).   As you can see, there's a LOT of great info here, and I can't wait for you to dig in. Walk-In Talk: Podcast sessions are not recorded in a studio, but remotely in hotels, restaurants, farms or anywhere you will find food and the people that bring that food into existence. We recorded two sessions at Circle C Farms last week. One with Stropharia Mushroom Farm (go to my website and donate to their GFM page-www.TheWalkInTalk.com) and the second was with Nicole Cruz, owner of Circle C Farm in Bonita Springs, Florida. She had a lot to share about the farm life. Nicole gave insight into the realities of natural disasters and the loss of livestock. I greatly appreciate Chef Jeffrey Schlissel accompanying us and taking part in creating the podcast. By the way - shots were fired at the end of the prior episode… Seth from Stropharia Mushroom Farm went full Jersey on whether or not the correct saying is GRAVY or SAUCE!  The answer is sauce, of course. Anyhow, it got a little heated and that energy carried over into our session with Nicole… hope you're entertained! Check out the farms website:CircleCFarmFl.com StrophariaMushroomFarm.com  Peninsula Foodservice: The Best Beef! Do you know where most of your referrals come from? Referrals and renewals make up the backbone of my entire professional career. If you don't know where your referrals are coming from, it's probably time to sit down and figure it out so that you can send them a thank you note. Building relationships is the key to getting more referrals and renewals. We live in an increasingly online world where we think we need to have a certain number of followers and perfect pictures, but what's really important is the substance of our relationships. Human beings are social. We crave connections with other people. You need connection and so do your clients, so reaching out to them to build relationships is a win-win. In this episode, I'm sharing some questions for you to ask your clients about their experience with you and six tips on how to get great referrals. If you want to get clients and make sales while you sleep, this is for you. Show notes are always available at elainelou.com/podcast/23.Resources Mentioned:My Lawyer: andreasager.comMy Marketing and Messaging Strategist: https://unsociallyinclined.com/My Mindset Coach in My Inner Circle Program: https://nicolecruzcoaching.com/Adria Moses' Trauma-Informed Certification: https://www.schoolofradicalhealing.com/programsMy DEI Consultants: https://pauseontheplay.com/Episode 6: Charging Your Worth as a WOC and Being an Imperfect Ally with Erica Courdae and India Jackson: https://elainelou.com/blog/charging-your-worth-as-a-woc-and-being-an-imperfect-ally-with-erica-courdae-and-india-jackson/Episode 4: How to Start Being Less Dependent on Social Media with Monica Schrock: https://elainelou.com/blog/how-to-start-being-less-dependent-on-social-media-with-monica-schrock/Episode 2: How to Put Yourself First Without Feeling Guilty with Nicole Cruz: https://elainelou.com/blog/why-you-need-to-selfishly-put-yourself-first-as-a-woc-and-ally-with-nicole-cruz/Where We Can Connect:Apply to schedule a call to see if the Color Your Dreams Inner Circle is a good fit for you: https://elainelou.com/innercircleSchedule a call with me: https://elainelou.com/callJoin my weekly Color Your Dreams Newsletter: http://elainelou.com/joinFollow Along on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elainelou_Follow Along on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/iamelainelouConnect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/elaineloucartas

But over time, through the conditioning of our institutions, communities, families, and social media (just to name a few), our ability to trust ourselves is questioned, and we instead sink deeper into diet culture. But there is hope for ALL of us, no matter our age, and we encourage you to listen to this episode regardless of whether you have children or not, because there is plenty of wisdom shared that can be applied to all of us. The FAQs covered include: Navigating your child's seemingly insatiable desire for sugar, how to approach veggies, what to do if one parent is still dieting, and how to talk about nutrients without moralizing food. Happy Satiated Saturday! In the process of writing my book on Somatic Eating™, I interviewed my mom about my food habits growing up. I was quite a "picky" eater. While plenty of different foods were offered to me, my favorite thing was peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and buttered noodles. It's funny to reflect on this because as an adult, I have more of the philosophy of I'll try anything once. I have worked with a lot of parents over the years that are just trying to do the best they can to feed their children and it can be confusing! Allow sugar or don't allow sugar? Force them to eat their vegetables? Rules around dessert? Your kid's relationship with food can be a strong mirror back to you and reflect back everything you might be working on in your relationship with your food and body as well.In this week's episode, I loved my conversation with Nicole Cruz, Registered Dietitian specializing in disordered eating and family feeding, about food freedom foundations for you and your kids, how to navigate sugar with kids (and for yourself), and looking inside self when you have reactions around your kid's (or anyone's) food behaviors. Even if you don't have kids, you were once a kid and listening to this episode can raise awareness around what you potentially grew up with that affected your relationship with food and begin to support your inner child in new ways. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here:  https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/food-freedom-foundations-for-you-and-your-childrenAs a reminder, never forget that you have always been doing the best you can to take care of you and your family. Are you constantly putting other people's needs before your own? Our first guest on the podcast is life coach Nicole Cruz, and she is talking about why you need to selfishly put yourself first as a woman of color and ally. I knew that I wanted one of the first episodes of Color Your Dreams to be about mindset, and I couldn't think of anyone better to speak to us about that than Nicole. She's sharing her take on how putting yourself first honors your ancestors, improves your relationships, and enables you to serve others. She's here to remind you that your worthiness is innate, and you don't have to prove yourself to others to be valuable. Nicole Cruz believes in the amazing potential in people to grow, evolve, and have an impact on the world. She believes that playing a bigger role in our own lives elevates everyone around us. Nicole also believes in abundance, love, and connection. Nicole is on a mission to help others move from fear and self-doubt to clarity and joy.  She loves being able to help others make their own transformations to love themselves, believe in themselves, and take action towards their dreams. If you want to go from supporting role to leading lady in your life, tune in.Show notes available at elainelou.com/podcast/2Resources Mentioned:Follow Nicole on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nicolecruzcoaching/Connect with Nicole on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicolecruzmba/Get Nicole's Living Bravely Program: https://www.nicolecruzcoaching.com/living-bravely/Email Nicole at nicole@nicolecruzcoaching.com with the subject “Elaine” to get her free masterclass on how to get clear on what you want Where we can connect:Apply to schedule a call to see if the Legacy Lifestyle Inner Circle is a good fit for you: https://elainelou.com/innercircleSchedule a call with me: https://elainelou.com/callJoin my weekly Color Your Dreams Newsletter: http://elainelou.com/joinFollow Along on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elainelou_Follow Along on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/iamelainelouConnect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/elaineloucartas

In honor of Women’s History Month, I’ve invited a couple of my clients who just started their businesses, and made their first 1K and beyond within 3 months, to share their insights, mindset shifts and behind the scenes stories with you. Each of them is breaking barriers and making history right now - not just for themselves, but also for the whole entrepreneurship field as what’s possible as an Asian and woman of color. This week, I have the AMAZING Arianna Laila Dela Rosa with us. Arianna (she/her) is a holistic career coach who empowers first-generation professionals to navigate the job search and thrive confidently in their careers. Being a first-gen professional and woman of color, Arianna tailors her coaching to overcome barriers many of us face, such as self-limiting beliefs, imposter syndrome, and lack of career confidence and clarity. When she's not coaching, she's studying for her M.Ed in Learning Design and building diversity, equity, and inclusion programs for students at her university. Overall, she's committed to serving her community from a place of empowerment, learning, and joy. In this episode you’ll hear about what inspired Arianna to go into coaching full-time vs. finishing the final round of a 9-5 job interview, the money mindset shifts that were essential for her to make 5K+ in 3 months (i.e. changing the beliefs that “money is bad” and “charging would make me a sell out”), and how she was able to become fully booked while building a business based on her own terms. The theme for this episode is around authenticity, which is also the most valuable thing that Arianna got out of coaching. We often think that we need to be like all the other coaches with thousands of likes to make money, when really, honing in on who you really are and how you can deeply serve your dream clients, and just focusing on that versus comparison and shoulds, is the highest value generating activity you can do for your business. When Nicole Cruz came to me, it became apparent that she wanted to build a business so she could put herself out of business.   Let me explain.   Nicole is a registered dietician and for 10 years, she’s been seeing clients one on one - mostly young girls and teenagers who have eating disorders or disordered eating and who want to heal their relationship with body and food.   As a mom of three littles and fueled by her desire to help prevent more kids from having such challenges, she started Joyful Eating for Your Family, a brand whose mission it is to help parents teach their kids how to have a healthy relationship with food.   When we began working together, she had just started the private Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/joyfuleatingforyourfamily/) and had an Instagram account. Fast forward, Nicole has solidified her message and stepped into her passionate voice to help families.  Her Facebook Group has over 2,000 members, her Instagram account is followed by over 8,100 people and over 1,200 people have subscribed to her email list.   She’ll release her first book in early 2020, is creating paid-for online workshops/webinars and has plans to build out a signature course...all that will help her serve her community.   During our conversation, Nicole shares… How she’s been able to step into a message that is controversial (at least seen as “going against the grain”) and how she’s dealt with it. What the process of productizing her knowledge through guides, books and webinars has been like. The process her book has gone through...from originally being the first paid product she would offer to it being her sugar manifesto that is branding her as the expert! What negative self-beliefs have come up for her along the way and the mindset shifts she’s had to have in order to keep going. I know you’ll be as inspired by Nicole as I am!  You can find out more about her here —> http://nicolecruzrd.com/

In this special episode, Nicole Cruz (Life Coach) tackles topics of clarity, career change, limiting beliefs, and the different dynamics that being 1st/2nd generation Filipina and different cultural expectations play in that. This episode is brought to you by my courses: PCOS and Food Peace and Dietitians PCOS and Food Peace. You CAN make peace with food even with PCOS and I want to show you how. This episode's Dear Food letter: Dear Food, The high school version of me would have been the last person on this Earth to ever believe that my relationship with you would end up causing me so much heartache and pain. I was fine until college. Backtracking to childhood, I always loved you. I was a foodie, never overthought and wasn't obsessed with the idea of what I would eat next. Food was wonderful, especially "treats" or "junk-food" type items that I didn't get to eat often. I know there were times when my eyes were bigger than my stomach, but maybe this is a thing that many young kids also experience? High school was normal. I was active playing a sport that I loved, busy with school, and spending time with family and friends. Senior year, I found myself with more freedom than ever. A lot of it was spent watching tv or cooking and eating with friends. Then came college. After a particularly sad and confusing breakup with a boy and betrayal by a friend, my college friend group disintegrated. In retrospect, I think I may have retreated into TV and snacks, and there was no one to tell me to do differently. Then, during Thanksgiving break, I realized that I had been too free with you, food, and my "cute little body" was quickly becoming something I was ashamed of and disgusted by. I'd never had anything but a small body and lived in a family of small people. I decided I would pay more attention to what and how much I was eating. I figured this would help get myself under control. And from the moment I became aware of your presence and your power in my life, things really have never been the same since. Fast forward through five months of increasingly difficult and dreadful exercise regimens and an increasingly restricted intake of food, I left school early to move home and enter outpatient treatment. My junior year, I finally transferred into XYZ College. I was ecstatic, but the restriction started almost right away. This time, though, my body was far more resistant to restriction, and it was increasingly difficult to not give in and binge. I returned home after only 3 months, and didn't return to school until the next summer. Now, my 4th year of college is almost over. That means I've been binging for a year now. It's hard to believe that I ever was able to restrict at all, because binging is such an everyday part of my life now. Over these past years, I have had consistent therapy, and have also met with dietitians, but it seems like nothing is able to help me. In fact, the binging seems like it's getting worse and worse – in the past two months alone, I have gained X pounds. I think I've lost hope in ever being normal with food or body image. I feel so abnormal and wrong. In recovery, binging was always my biggest fear, and now it's my constant reality. I have all the tools and resources I should need to help myself and change, but I'm still doing this.
