SHOW LESS#RetirementPlanning can seem boring, but when you have our #FinanceFriday guest Seth Bassoff CEPA®, APMA®, CRPS®, CRPC®, RFC® on your side, you can do some very cool things. Find Seth is a financial advisor and senior vice president of the Adelson Group, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services. Seth's impressive biography is just one reason I brought him on today's #FinanceFriday; he is also an old friend of mine. Watch our video where we discuss retirement planning and tax savings below. https://www.ameripriseadvisors.com/se... The first topic we go over is retirement planning and the most beneficial retirement plans that a small business owner can have. Most small business owners have SEP or Simple IRAs; however, Seth introduces us to ERISA, Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974. 401ks are an example of an ERISA-qualified plan. SEPS and SIMPLES are designed for certain types of people and contribution levels, while in contrast, ERISA qualified plans offer a big opportunity for savings and tax savings. Consulting with Seth can help you plan for your retirement. Any #smallbusiness can take advantage of ERISA plans, including a sole proprietor or LLC who only has one employee, yourself. The amount you can contribute and divert away from tax is huge in comparison to other retirement plans. Seth shares a story of a client who was offered this retirement plan, and after understanding the tax-saving implications, asked Seth, "Is this legal?" The plan saves you so much money it feels illegal, but Seth assures that it is all very legal. It's not a tax technique; it's written n the code. However, you should make sure to partner with some like Seth, who does this consulting daily. Seth and I urge you to get informed and educated not these matters before you jump in, and Seth can help you do that. Watch the video above to hear more about Seth's expertise regarding tax savings and retirement planning, as well as some personal interests of his. Check out last #FinanceFriday, and have a great weekend. As always, if you're looking for a fantastic CPA to help grow your business and wealth, set up a zoom call with me. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bettehochbergercpa/support

We also are approaching the fourth anniversary of the Embracing Intensity podcast, which means we’ve been at this for quite a while now! For now, enjoy another informative show with my inspiring guest who I've been a fan of for quite some time. Seth Perler’s life’s work has been dedicated to helping kids overcome executive functioning challenges so they can have great futures despite our outdated educational systems. Seth’s mission is to help compassionate and proactive parents, educators, and others who care about kids. He wants to give honest, practical, and unconventional approaches to helping complicated, struggling students without BS or misinformation. He wants to teach the world about executive function, which is at the root of student struggles. Seth’s vision is a day when we don’t need executive functioning coaches because education is wildly successful at empowering all students with everything they need to have happy, healthy, and successful lives. Show Highlights: Why Seth is intensely passionate about helping struggling students and changing educators to understand these kids better How Seth grew up as a curious, free-spirited kid who loved animals and nature but never fit into “the box” in school How Seth was labeled as a lazy, irresponsible failure--and his “fire was squelched” How Seth became a teacher of gifted kids but soon became frustrated with the system How Seth’s personal brand of intensity loves nature and the environment and feels the suffering of other people, animals, and plants Why Seth hates to see kids struggle to be understood How Seth is intense with his sensory experiences and emotions How kids’ feelings are invalidated by cultural factors that teach them that acknowledging their feelings is not OK Why Seth had a hopeless and cynical attitude as a kid, knowing he was “not like the other kids” How Seth learned to escape by going into social settings to avoid being alone Why Seth felt trapped by his “darkness” How Seth lived in his problem until he found the tools to step into the solution How Seth uses his fire for good by teaching what he most needs to learn and using what he has struggled with to help others How Seth harnesses the power of his intensity through meditation, the #1 way he understands himself Seth’s advice to those who don’t think they can meditate How Seth helps kids learn to shine through new mindsets, systems, and routines Seth’s advice: Focus on helping others with a heart and spirit of service Meditate and have times of stillness Learn to journal Get in touch with your story to know what is BS and what is truth Resources: Connect with Seth: Seth Perler and Executive Function Summit Find Seth on YouTube and his podcast, Learn Smarter.

Grade inflation often seems like a trivial offense, a somewhat victimless crime. However, evidence suggests the exact opposite, that the practice undermines students, corrodes institutions, and perpetuates privilege. Amy and Mike invited researcher and professor Seth Gershenson Ph.D to enumerate the many reasons why grade inflation is harmful. What are five things you will learn in this episode? What are the three different types of grade inflation and how do they manifest? How does grade inflation hurt students? How does grade inflation hurt institutions? How does grade inflation impede equity? What policies might address or improve this situation? MEET OUR GUEST Seth Gershenson is Associate Professor of Public Policy in the School of Public Affairs (SPA) at American University. He is also Research Fellow at the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA), Senior Technical Advisor to Institute for Education Policy at Johns Hopkins, and Coordinator of SPA’s Analytics and Management Institute. Professor Gershenson works broadly in the economics of education and education policy, with specific interests in teacher labor markets, summer learning loss, student absences, community-wide shocks, teacher expectations and implicit bias, and the causes and consequences of the underrepresentation of teachers of color. Seth’s research has been funded by the Spencer Foundation, the American Educational Research Association, W.E. Upjohn Institute, Association for Institutional Research, and Google; published in leading education-policy academic journals; and featured in media outlets such as USA Today, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, NPR, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, Vox, NBC News, and The Atlantic.
