I'm all alone for this episode. This week I wanted to talk with you about finding the courage you need to take a bold step forward in your life. It could be anything, from continuing your education to changing jobs or starting to date. Anxiety and uncertainty often hold us back when we know we need to make an important change. But they don't have to. There are effective ways to move through our hesitation so that nothing stops us from living the life we know is calling us. I hope you get a lot out of this episode. It's based on the first session of a new course I created called Forward: Finding Courage to Take a Bold Step. The course offers 5 audio sessions that include mindfulness exercises to help you find your center, manage your mindset, and act with awareness and intention. The practices you'll discover in Forward will help you retrain your thoughts, roll with difficult emotions, and work with whatever life brings you. Each session includes an invitation to practice the things you've learned, so you can move from insight to action. The sessions are designed to teach you effective skills without taking a lot of time or energy. They're audio-based, so you can listen without needing to look at a screen. I'll be monitoring the Comments section so I can respond to your questions. I'd love to see you there!

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a powerful practice that has been proven to effectively reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. But, while CBT can help bring us relief in the short term, it doesn't always create lasting change. That's why many mental health professionals are now combining CBT with another technique - mindfulness. By combining the two practices, we can start to create long-term improvements in our behavior, thoughts, and attitudes. Here to discuss research-based practices from his recently published book, Mindful Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, A Simple Path to Healing, Hope and Peace, is best-selling author and psychologist, Seth Gillihan. Because then, you know, I've got the mansion, I've got the whatever and I still feel empty inside. And that can be a reason to not reach it, like just got to keep climbing."Seth: "I used to think of CBT and mindfulness as just that, CBT plus mindfulness. But now, I've really thought of it as mindful awareness, mindful presence, is the context in which we work on our thoughts and our actions."Seth: "Reality is just reality, but so often we are fighting against it. We're saying things shouldn't be this way, I don't like this, and pushing things away instead of jus saying like, this is the way things are, let me receive that as a starting point and then I can respond adaptively to it."Seth: That helps so much with that idea of reacting flexibly to demands because I'm not locked in to one way of doing things. I'm not overly attached to a certain outcome. I'm willing to work with things as they are and to change things. Receiving and accepting doesn't mean that I leave them the way they are. It means that I'm starting from a really healthy understanding that this is reality and let's work from there." Learn more about Seth in the links below: Website: https://sethgillihan.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sethgillihanphd/Podcast: https://sethgillihan.com/podcasts/ Online courses: https://sethgillihan.com/online-courses/App: https://www.enjoybloom.com/Follow Success Fundamentals on the following links below: Website: https://www.successfundamentals.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4XCvuwxnFi5_7C6Ncm12xQLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/success-fundamentals™Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/successfundamentalspodcastInstagram: https://instagram.com/successfundamentalspodcast

I was going through clinical depression at the time, in my early 20s. Someone asked the Dali Lama, what would you do if you were depressed, as a Buddha? First, he laughed and said, I wouldn't know, I'm not depressed. Then he said something which resonated and stayed with me. He said, your emotions are like the waves on an ocean … sometimes they're bigger and sometimes they're smaller. And they are always passing by. But deep below the waves, there's a calmness, a serenity; there's clarity and there's wisdom. And any point in time, you can often find waves of going deeper within, you can operate from that place. Thoughts on Breathing Seth: I would first set a specific time to practice because it's really easy to have an intention to do it but then other things will inevitably get in the way. Then, start small with maybe a minute, or 3 minutes, or 5 minutes and just sit, notice the breath, be with those sensations, and know that meditation is not about making your thoughts stop. The more we try to do that actually, the more persistent the thoughts become. We just focus on the breath and then the mind will wander and will bring it right back. Benefits of Gardening (0:00:00) When it comes to taking care of our bodies, giving ourselves a mental rest can change our entire attitude towards the day. For many of us, scrolling through social media is the default mental break we all turn to. But have you ever thought about gardening instead? Planting tomato seeds, fertilizing our lawns, or trimming rose bushes seems like more exhausting work. But, it might just be the mental health activity you need in your life. Joining us is psychologist Dr. Seth Gillihan, to discuss how gardening benefits our mental health.   Five Two Love (0:14:55) Only 1 in 60 million births are to quintuplets. The number is surprisingly low, even with the development of fertility treatments, such as IVF. So, Skyler and Jamie Scott were definitely not expecting to hear that after years of trying to have another child, they would be having five. The Scotts currently have seven children, five of them being two-year-old quintuplets. They are internet sensations and run a YouTube channel called “Five Two Love” where they vlog about their fun family life and feature their everyday adventures. They join us to talk about their experience raising quintuplets.    Less Meat at Family Meals (0:30:26) There are lots of opinions out there about the best ways to eat healthier. One of those opinions is the idea that you should include less meat on the dinner table. This might seem unreasonable considering the fact that nutritionists say kids need an average of 40 grams of protein a day or 20 chicken nuggets. You could replace the nuggets with ½ a cup of peanut butter... but surely there are other options. So we invited friend of the show Carrie Ann Rhodes to share her experience with us about eating less meat as a family without sacrificing variety at the dinner table.   Cashless Society (0:50:36) It seems like every day we're moving further away from using cash. Checks, then debit and credit cards and now things like Apple Pay have replaced dollar bills and coins as the most popular form of payment. Cash is becoming the more cumbersome option, but are we really ready to say goodbye to cash entirely? Here to discuss what a cashless society would really look like is Caleb Silver, Editor in Chief of Investopedia.   Smart Glasses (1:05:32) In Ironman, Tony Stark wears a pair of powerful smart glasses that give him infrared vision and the ability to communicate with artificial intelligence to do whatever he wants. While our tech is probably not up to Ironman's speed yet, we are making incredible breakthroughs in technology and smart glasses do exist. We wanted to know more about this advancement in technology. So, we invited CEO Paul Travers and director Matt Margolis of Vuzix, a smart glasses company, to discuss these glasses and what they can do.     Dr. Seuss's Birthday (1:20:03) Host of The Apple Seed Sam Payne joins us to help us celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday!
