This week is a continuation of last week's episode with executive functioning coach Seth Perler, which was so packed full of information (and also so long) that I had to break it up into two separate episodes, which I'm now referring to as a “masterclass” in executive functioning. In last week's episode, Seth shared his protocol for setting up a child for success in their developing executive functioning skills. In today's episode, Seth is going to get into the nitty gritty about specific strategies he uses to address different executive functioning challenges that show up in school and in life. Seth Perler is a renegade teacher turned Executive Function Coach/Education Coach who is based in Santa Monica, CA and Boulder, CO. He helps struggling students navigate a crazy educational landscape and does his part to “disrupt” and improve education. Seth specializes in Executive Function and 2e. THINGS YOU'LL LEARN FROM THIS EPISODE: What “Frankenstudy” is, and how to know where to focus your energies so you can create a “domino effect” with your child's fledgling executive functioning skills How to best use “learning planners” to learn how to think / talk through their plan (and what we're doing wrong) The benefits of monthly planners versus daily or weekly planners Helping kids identify the “MIT” – most important thing – each day The importance of creating a sacred study space for a child How to optimize an internet browser to make it easy with bookmark bars (and have tabs automatically open, including calendar, grade tab, email) Why it's important to get kids to start checking grades weekly (Seth recommends Sunday nights) The importance of helping a child create clearly identified routines (for leaving house, doing daily plan, doing homework, etc.) How getting visual with kids benefits them in developing their executive functioning skills Why separate digital timers need to be a part of a child's life so they can learn to calibrate time, as well as get started and do short bursts of work Creating a weekly overhaul of systems The important of kids “getting into the mode” for studying, etc: organize their space, make their plan, and executive RESOURCES MENTIONED: Seth Perler's website and blog A “Masterclass” in Executive Functioning with Seth Perler, Part 1 (podcast episode) A Conversation with Executive Functioning Coach Seth Perler (original podcast episode) Seth's Executive Functioning Assessment Seth Perler's YouTube Channel Support the show Connect with Tilt Parenting Visit Tilt Parenting Take the free 7-Day Challenge Read a chapter of Differently Wired Follow Tilt on Twitter & Instagram Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of the TiLT Parenting Podcast, I'm bringing back a previous guest, executive functioning coach Seth Perler, for a two-part series in which Seth shares with us the exact approach he uses with students he works with when helping them foster their fledgling executive functioning skills. I first had Seth on the show last fall, where he gave us an introduction to executive functioning, but we didn't get to the more practical strategies that I know so many of us are looking for. So I asked Seth to come back on, and that conversation turned into an hour-and-a-half long sharing by Seth of truly valuable tips and strategies and insights. Because Seth shares so very much over the course of these ninety or so minutes, I wanted to split our conversation into two parts. So this episode is part one of what I'm now referring to as a “Masterclass in Executive Functioning.” In this episode, Seth shares with us his protocol for setting up a child for success in their developing executive functioning skills. In part 2 next week, Seth will go in-depth into his specific strategies surrounding building these skills in school and in life. We are kicking off this season with a conversation with Dr. Stuart Shanker, who I first learned about through my friend Seth Perler as he's been part of the TEFOS Summit. I love Stuart's message and recently devoured his book Self-Reg: How to Help Your Child (and You) Break the Stress Cycle and Successfully Engage With Life, and wanted to dive deeper with Stuart about it. In this episode, we get into the ways in which the brain controls the levels of stress, the difference between self-regulation and self-control, and the difference between stress behavior and misbehaving. Stuart also walks us through his 5 steps to Self-Reg, and talks about the power of us as parents and caregivers and educators doing our own self-reg work so we can support the kids around us. About Dr. Stuart ShankerDr. Stuart Shanker (D.Phil) is a Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Psychology, the Founder & Visionary of The MEHRIT Centre, Ltd., and Self-Reg Global Inc. I wanted to have a frank and honest conversation with my friend, executive function coach, and frequent guest of the pod, Seth Perler, about what is and is not working in schools right now, especially as we are once again in that back-to-school season. Of course there have been many changes in education since the start of COVID, including the inclusion of technology in almost every aspect of learning and the increased testing that students are being subjected to since returning to campus. And we know that neurodivergent kids tend to be impacted by these changes more than other students. So what can we do as parents? Where should we be putting our energies? Seth Perler was one of those boys. Now, he's an executive function coach who helps other kids develop the skills they need to thrive. Seth is also the founder of The Online Executive Function Summit (TEFOS). TEFOS 2022 is August 5-7 -- and it's FREE! Today's Episode with Seth Perler:Seth Perler is an Executive Function, ADHD, and 2e Coach. He is also a speaker and vlogger, and offers an executive function online summit.Seth struggled in school for most of his years. He didn't know how to get things done and started internalizing his self-criticism. When he was 22, he had a job working with kids and fell in love with being of service to kids. He became a teacher for 12 years but felt like this job was holding him back from truly fulfilling his purpose of service. How do I make enough money to continue to serve? This is a question that Seth needed to answer in order to serve to the best of his ability. He continued to create content through YouTube and podcasts, one-on-one coaching, and offering courses in order to fulfill this.If you don't exactly know what career path you want to take, know that this is a common and okay feeling. Seth experienced this as well and developed routines that helped him identify his vocation. He made a vision board and committed to doing a vision journal with thoughts and questions such as: What is an ideal day? Who is my ideal client? At the start of his business, Seth did not have sufficient income to live comfortably but was okay with this because he was committed to putting his whole heart into his business. Do things that might not work! Seth decided to step into the unknown, try things out and put this energy into the universe. He built a website, started making blogs and YouTube videos. He didn't know if this would all work but took a leap of faith and put trust in himself and in the universe.Your business will tell you where you need to go. You will get feedback that will guide you to the next step and tell you what more you can do to be of service. If you are not where you want to be in your business right now, fill your time that you would usually use to watch tv or scroll on your phone with time where you are listening to podcasts or reading books that resonate with your situation. To find more clients, be creative in your ways, be patient, and don't give up! You will experience what's called a “hockey stick effect” where, after a long period of stagnation, there is a sharp rise in growth. If you are wanting to create a course or bootcamp or write a book, Seth loves making models to conceptualize what is going on. For example, a model that he uses with students/parents during a semester is: strong start, the dip, swimming upstream, and hail mary at the end of the semester. You can find Seth Perler at www.sethperler.com or www.executivefunctionsummit.com and subscribe to his YouTube at: The Executive Function Show: ADHD, 2e, Seth PerlerHot seat answers! Some gems: “If you want to help a kid who is struggling with homework, grades, procrastination, under acheivement, time management, and motivation, you have to understand ONE thing – and one thing only – and that's EXECUTIVE FUNCTION.” and “You have to understand the experience these boys are having. They've been asked to do these things so many time and they've failed or it's been ‘not good enough;' they've been told to re-do it, or ‘you didn't put your name on it” or ‘it's late so you're getting a zero' so many times.” In this episode, Jen, Janet & Seth discuss: What is executive function? Why boys with executive function challenges don't struggle with Legos, video games or other activities they enjoy Why punishments & rewards aren't effective motivation strategies Establishing reasonable expectations Helping kids who are behind (on turning in assignments, etc) “catch up” When (& how) to reach out to your son's teacher How to deal with resistance Why it's OK for your son to aim for a D (vs. a B) Exploring other educational options Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: sethperler.com — Seth's website ADHD with Ryan Wexelblatt, the ADHD Dude — ON BOYS episode Twice Exceptional (2e) Boys – ON BOYS episode Developing a Growth Mindset with Carol Dweck — TED talk The Shame of ADHD and Executive Function — Seth's video/blog post Sponsor Spotlight: Hiya Health HEALTHY children's vitamins — no sugar or “gummy junk” included! Special guest: Seth Perler. What is executive functioning and what does it have to do with our children's success in school and life? My next guest explains that Executive Function is what it takes to get stuff done (such as homework, writing a paper or cleaning a room, etc.). In other words, it's the ability to “execute” complex tasks and see that those tasks go all the way through to completion. Some kids have a knack for organizational tasks, scheduling and pacing themselves—while others struggle. If your child struggles with school-related tasks like homework, staying focused on a project until it's completed, organizational skills, time management—or perhaps become avoidant, resistant, forgetful or overwhelmed when it comes to getting school-related tasks completed-- they probably struggle with Executive Function. So, what can we do? How can we help our kids who struggle in this area? And what do we want to avoid doing, so we don't make things worse? My next guest has these answers and more. Seth Perler helps students who struggle with school, homework, grades, resistance, overwhelm, motivation, underachievement, organization, focus, study skills and time management. He helps complicated, misunderstood, outside-the-box, neurodiverse learners turn it around in a baffling system so they can launch a successful future. His blog, sethperler.com, gives game-changing answers in a sea of misguided educational fluff. Traditional academic interventions don't often get to the root of a child's problems and they're often based on misinformation or outdated paradigms. Consequently, your child's patterns get worse each year, leading to pervasive difficulties transitioning into adulthood. Parents often feel helpless, watching their child drown in school, as they spin their wheels trying to help. Parents are desperate for tools that are 1) practical, and 2) that account for a child's unique needs. It's all about Executive Function, which is Seth's specialty. Does your son have a problem with executive function? Let's put it another way.... Does he struggle with homework, procrastination, time management, or lack of motivation? Does he have ADHD? If so, he probably needs help developing his executive functioning. “If you want to help a kid who is struggling with homework, grades, procrastination, under acheivement, time management, and motivation, you have to understand ONE thing - and one thing only - and that’s EXECUTIVE FUNCTION," says Seth Perler, a former struggling student who now helps others as an executive function, ADHD, and 2e coach. Boys who have executive function challenges typically struggle in two areas: Schoolwork and responsibilities, Seth says. And parents who are distressed at their sons' lack of achievement aren't necessarily helicopter parents. Intuitively, parents realize that if boys can't figure out how to get stuff done, their future options dwindle. But simply nagging these boys won't help. In fact, nagging often makes things worse. "You have to understand the experience these boys are having," Seth says. "They've been asked to do these things so many time and they've failed or it's been 'not good enough;' they've been told to re-do it, or 'you didn't put your name on it'' or 'it's late so you're getting a zero' so many times." Unfortunately, there are no quick fixes for these challenges. But you CAN build your son's skills. Pay attention to these 3 things: Systems. Children with executive function problems need direct instruction to develop a system of planning, of organization, a homework system, etc. Mindset. You can help your son move past his resistance mindset and help him develop a "can do" attitude. Habits and routines. After you've helped your son develop systems and adjust his mindset, you can help him establish systems and routines to get stuff done. In this episode, Jen, Janet & Seth discuss: What is executive function? Why boys with executive function challenges don't struggle with Legos, video games or other activities they enjoy Why punishments & rewards aren't effective motivation strategies Establishing reasonable expectations Helping kids who are behind (on turning in assignments, etc) "catch up" When (& how) to reach out to your son's teacher How to deal with resistance Why it's OK for your son to aim for a D (vs. a B) Exploring other educational options Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: sethperler.com -- Seth's website ADHD with Ryan Wexelblatt, the ADHD Dude -- ON BOYS episode Twice Exceptional (2e) Boys - ON BOYS episode Developing a Growth Mindset with Carol Dweck -- TED talk The Shame of ADHD and Executive Function -- Seth's video/blog post, mentioned at 33:10 The Executive Function Online Summit -- summit mentioned at 39:19 (scheduled for Aug. 20-22, 2021)

Seth talks about becoming an entrepreneur, not having a plan, just leaping, and figuring it out as he went along. He says that he was scared, but he didn't let it stop him because it wasn't about him; it was about helping other people. Seth says that if you are stuck, don't let it derail what you want to do because if he could do it, so can you. You'll learn: [02:22] Welcome to the show, Seth! Do you struggle with executive functioning challenges? Today, we're talking with Seth Perler, an Executive Function, ADHD & 2e Coach in Colorado. Seth will be telling his story about rising up, coming back, and finding his life's purpose. After nearly losing everything, he's dedicated his life to helping complicated, struggling students learn to navigate school and life so they can have a fantastic future full of choices and possibilities, where they can achieve their goals, do what matters to them and have a great quality of life. Executive Function is the key. Listen in to learn more about Seth and his purpose-driven journey. What to Listen For: What does Seth Perler do? “I am what's called an Executive Function Coach, and I'm an ADHD Coach and a 2e Coach. But what that really means is that I am passionate about education and I am angry and frustrated that students who don't fit in the box, - these outside-of-the-box thinkers and feelers and doers and talkers - these kids that do not fit in boxes. Well, they cannot fit in the school box, and they end up quote, ‘failing.' So, that pisses me off. We have a system that has, as one of its metrics, you have A,B,C,D,F and F is called fail. And that drives me nuts. And I was a teacher for 12 years. I have a master's in gifted and talented education. I struggled mightily as a kid and a teenager, like you wouldn't believe.” Why did he feel called to this work? “I am an ADD personality. I do not fit in the box myself as an adult. I didn't as a teacher, I didn't as a kid but I am not in the hopeless place that I was when I was a young person. I have a fantastic life today that I do love, and I hope I live a very long life and, uh, I've gotten to do really neat, interesting things and live the way that I want to live. It's not perfect, but I have made choices that have enabled me to choose my lifestyle. I feel like I have a fulfilling purpose. I have fulfilling work and all, all this to say that I was someone who was very hopeless and didn't think I could do anything like this. And I do have a fantastic life today. So anyhow, my life is dedicated to that.” Who was Seth Perler before he did this work? Being adopted as a baby and what his family life was like growing up Begin free-spirited and curious and not fitting into the traditional box of school A deep feeler since childhood “Once I became 11, 12, 13 I think it became more apparent that I wasn't conforming the way I was supposed to. I really started to internalize messages. Now my external messages, meaning I could communicate them to you, were: I'm lazy. I'm a failure. I can't do anything right. Why try? When am I ever gonna use this? This is stupid. I hate this. And then as I got more into teenage hood: the world sucks. People suck. The older I get, the more people suck. This is just hopeless. What I internalized, meaning I couldn't articulate was: I'm a piece of shit. I have no value. I'm not enough. I'm not okay. I'm broken. Those sorts of messages were what I internalized again, I didn't have a consciousness around that. I just could not stand to be in my own skin.” Being labeled a daydreamer on a report card - something he now considers a superpower Getting tested for learning disabilities and discovering he's gifted The story about not applying himself, not living up to his potential Feeling like nothing mattered Getting fired from jobs that are difficult to get fired from Diving into any escape to check out from the feelings that he just messed everything up Hating who he was, not believing in himself, not believing he could change Shifting from victim mentality to 100% responsibility Hitting rock bottom in his early 20s “What rock bottom was for me was that I knew that my choices and my behaviors and my actions, could get me killed, could get me hurt, could lose my family. They were done with me by this point. That was actually my bottom,

We live in a culture and a time of more — the more you do, the more you have; the more you have, the more successful you are. And yet, that pressure and constant fear of failure is damaging, especially to our neuro-atypical children with ADHD and/or autism. One thing that can help tremendously in all aspects of school and home life is following the adage that less is more, as Executive Function & 2e Coach, Seth Perler, discusses in this episode. When kids with ADHD have less visual and mental clutter, there's less to be distracted by. When they have less overwhelm and stress and pressure, they're able to focus and function. When they have opportunities for successes — no matter how simple or how small — they succeed more. Learn how to help your child (and yourself) dial it back so you can feel good and live your best lives.

It is hosted by Alexis Avila, founder of Prepped and Polished LLC, a tutoring and test prep firm for K-college. On today's show, Alexis talks Yulia Rafailova who is founder of Mind Full Education, a company that helps parents and their kids tackle a variety of issues that stem from executive functioning deficits such as: > Lack of engagement and motivation in academics/school. > Disorganization, losing important items. > Emotional overwhelm and anxiety. > Poor time management, planning, and prioritizing tasks. > Lack of study routine and skills. > Communication, asking for help, and self-advocacy. Yulia says that it's better to use the word TAKE ACTION (vs. motivation). The word motivated puts a lot of pressure on you. But taking action will lead you to take more action and feel more motivated! Yulia's Tips to take action to get better motivated in school: Exercise: Write down three columns on paper of goals that you need to get done and what you want to get done. In another column write down all the negative consequences if not reaching those goals In another column write all the benefits if goals are reached. Do this process daily, it will help you take more action. Yulia's advice for teens: Ask yourself what do you love to do, what are you passionate about, and what problem do you want to solve in the world. Seth was a teacher for 12 years (several grades and subjects), has a B.A. in Education, an M.Ed. in Gifted Education, has worked with teens with substance issues for 15 years, and taught on a Navajo reservation. On todays episode Seth talks about tips to get disorganized students better organized in school and in life. Seth's tips for organization: Declutter your bedroom and desk, simplify! The more stuff you have the more stuff you have to maintain! Downsize your environment. Have “homes” for things that are labeled! Keep electronics in baskets for example. Create systems for organizing their school work, homework and keep it in a logical place to find easily. Do a Sunday overhaul, so once per week re do and organize all your folders, papers, planners What is a Queue folder? The Queue folder is for everything current across all subjects. It's a catch all for everything current. Ex) put paper that is due in a week in Queue, put science test review sheet in queue. Seth's final tips for teens: Do not give up! #1 biggest problem will have is your own resistance. The key to overcoming resistance is to take baby steps and move inch by inch. The key to happy future is to do things you won't like, like getting organized and writing papers. Push self beyond comfort zone consistently. Check out Seth's youtube channel! “Biography of a Struggling Student: My Story”. This is what Brian Seth Perler sends to me when I ask for his bio. Hah! I certainly can relate to that- I was that kid too. He struggled really hard during high school and then failed out of two colleges, finally returning home and moving in with his grandmother. Things were not great. Through keeping his chin up and repeatedly asking for help- which was also tough to do, he finally got a minimum wage job working with students at a company called ‘At Your School'. There he found something that he was good at, a wonderful mentor and a passion that continues to fuel his path.
