Hollywood doesn't exactly have a stellar track record when it comes to portraying mental illness in a sensitive, honest, and appropriately complex way (think Psycho or the notorious caffeine pill episode of Saved by the Bell). But the top show on Netflix right now, Ginny & Georgia went to great lengths to show mental health conditions honestly. The series tells the story of Georgia, a mother with a traumatic background, Ginny, her daughter with a habit of self-harming, and it includes characters such as a neighbor boy and Ginny's love interest, Marcus, with a persistent major depressive disorder. Show creator Sarah Lampert talks with us about how, with the help of a doctor of psychology and consulting from the advocacy group Mental Health America, she and her creative staff were able to tell honest stories that were moving without being exploitive or sensationalized.Thank you to all our listeners who support the show as monthly members of Maximum Fun.Check out our I'm Glad You're Here and Depresh Mode merchandise at the brand new merch website MaxFunStore.com!Hey, remember, you're part of Depresh Mode and we want to hear what you want to hear about. If you're fixing a High School comedy film, how do you recast the main actor without causing a scene? How do you make the jokes work when the actors are saying the lines poorly & the cameraman keeps laughing? How do you salvage it when half the cast has been cancelled mid-way thru the shoot? All the links - LINKTR.EE/BARBARAFAISON On Thursday last week, I was out running errands before my part-time job at the Stockbridge local library and I had a taste for Cracker Barrel pancakes so I decided I would stop there before I went to work. I didn't have to be at work until 4 PM so I was having a late breakfast. As I walked up to the hostess stand another woman walked up exactly at the same time. We greeted the hostess, and said one when she asked how many people were in our party. She said she would seat us at the same time and we followed her into the restaurant. The other woman being seated turned around to me and said something like do you feel weird like me, when you eat by yourself? I don't mind eating alone, it gives me an opportunity to do my word search or read or just be. I said “Do you wanna join me for lunch?”We sat down, and Sandy and I had a delightful lunch/breakfast. Interestingly enough, the food inspectors were there so our food was delayed by quite a few minutes which gave us even more time to chat and enjoy our adventure. I asked Sandy a question and she continued sharing information about herself. At one point, she did say I've been talking a lot, tell me something about you.We chatted about work, family, and life in general. When the food finally came, I was able to eat a little bit before I had to leave to go to work. I said my goodbyes and smiled at Adventure #1.At the library we have monthly programs for adults, young adults, and children. On this day, we were doing Mahjong. One of the games I play online is Mahjong, it is different playing on the computer than in person. In person there needs to be four people, and I volunteered if they needed additional people/staff for the program.I was really excited when they needed a fourth. I sat down and learned how to play American Mahjong. I really enjoyed it, it's stimulating and fun. We played three games and although I didn't win, I had a blast. Adventure #2 complete. On Saturday afternoon, my husband, TD and I drove down to Albany, Georgia, my hometown. We attended game night as part of my 45th high school reunion activities. I don't remember the last one I went to, I know it's been about 10 years. Thanks to Facebook and Instagram I have several classmates that follow me and join me on my breath breaks and some may even listen to my podcast. Lol. Thanks to all that do!It was a blast! We played games, laughed, had school trivia, food, and fellowship. I am so glad I went. Adventure #3!Lunch with a stranger, playing a new game in person, Mahjong, and going to my 45th High School reunion. And we stopped by the Bass Pro Shop in Macon, Ga on the way back… that was sort of an adventure, so I'll call it 3.5 adventures in four days! lolDid I start the week planning those adventures? I did not... I just let life do what life does... and I said yes!
USL League One spreading out West is an essential part of the plan over the next few years (“Manifest Destiny for L1”). Forming a Western Division would cut down on travel costs and make a 3rd tier professional club more affordable to operate. It is cities like Boise that are the perfect fit for joining the USL Western Front. The intrigue for the city as a potential soccer hotbed piqued after two friendlies produced sell-out results in the recent history. There was an Athletic Bilbao vs Liga MX Club Tijuana in 2015 that drew nearly 22k people into Boise State (where the infamous blue turf was covered with grass for the event…). Then there was a very unique event - where a USL Championship regular season league game took place (Portland Timbers II vs Swope Park Rangers) in 2016 at a High School in Boise and sold out the field at 4,350 people. The feeling of it being a good fit for USL is proving to be true as the club have already sold 3,500 season tickets for their USL League One Inaugural year. That is even without the branding in place (which is set to be released on June 27th). There was a brief period where the local Minor League Ownership group (of Boise Hawks) was speaking with USL to get a USL Championship squad. But Covid changed the narrative there. Now the timing is right and an All Star Front Office composed of four individuals - each with a different, unique specialty, are the ones backing this new project. There's NBA Executive experience, US Soccer Experience, Idaho Youth Soccer, and Real Estate Development experience all coming together to give this project legs. The Stadium project is perhaps one of the best stadium projects in the Country at the moment as well. They are converting an old horse racing track into a 6,000 fan soccer-specific stadium that has an incredible mountain backdrop. Phase 2 of the stadium project, which will hopefully be necessary as USL institutes promotion/relegation, would add an additional 5,000 seats for a capacity of 11,000 people. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to watching how things unfold in Boise, Idaho and I appreciate Bill Taylor for taking the time to speak with me. Here's a snippet of our conversation. If you've ever been curious about the differences in school counseling roles based on the grade levels they support, then this episode is for you. I'm joined by Alabama school counselors, Laura Rankhorn and Kim Cumbley. Between the three of us, we have experience as elementary, middle, and high school counselors. Our conversation centers around the differences and similarities between these grade levels. You might be surprised to find that our skills are really interchangeable in any grade level! One thing is for sure – there's so much opportunity to collaborate with school counselors who support grades other than your own.The building blocks are established by elementary school counselors, especially in developing social-emotional skills in students, and high school counselors must continue this work. Elementary, middle, and high school counseling roles may have their differences, but at the core, they all share the same goal of providing stellar support to students. If you're considering a leap between grade levels, don't be afraid! Embrace it as something new and full of possibilities.
