Educators are constantly learning how to better teach neurodivergent learners, but often we overlook the opportunity to help the students be better learners. How does educational therapy work? Is it dependent on the learner having a diagnosis? What is the process for working with families? We talk with Rachel Kapp and Stephanie Pitts, educational therapists and hosts of the Learn Smarter podcast, about helping learners learn, on episode 125. And if you're an educator, we have a course that will help you understand and support those neurodivergent learners. It's called Strategies for Supporting Twice-Exceptional Students. You are in for a treat with this episode, because on Diverse Thinking Different Learning, it is Game Time! Did you know that the board games that might be collecting dust on your shelves could be used to help children? They help all children, but can be very powerful tools for those who learn and think differently. Not only are games fun to play, but they can be used to improve language skills, executive functioning, memory, and numerical skills. Today's guest lists many of the ways that a simple card game can be “up-leveled” to facilitate learning. Stephanie Pitts, owner of My Ed Therapist, is known as “The Game Whisperer” and in this episode she shares her experience with games in her practice. With over 200 games in her collection, Stephanie has creative ideas that give a simple game the twists it needs to become something even better - a learning tool. Be sure to also check out the links below and follow her on Instagram to find ways to facilitate learning during your next family game night. Show Notes: [3:20] - Specifically for kids who learn differently, games are very helpful, but we don't often use them. [4:34] - What better way to reach a child than by having fun? [6:10] - Games can be made to be educational and can target many skills. [7:03] - For many kids who have already experienced so much failure, winning a game that is educational without them realizing is impactful. [8:34] - Stephanie says that games are “low investment, high return.” [9:44] - Some games are specifically designed to target a specific skill, but Stephanie demonstrates how other games can be “up-leveled” and used differently. [11:15] - Games can also be used as a simple break between difficult tasks. [13:11] - By using games, you can gather so much information about someone. [14:38] - Stephanie explains that video games have provided an outlet for students during the pandemic but when it affects behavior, it could be a problem. [17:20] - As a result of the pandemic, socializing and problem solving have been affected. [19:02] - Games provide practice for students without the pressure of earning a grade. [20:20] - Stephanie gives some examples on how games can support reading comprehension and following directions. [23:00] - As a parent, don't overthink it. Just simply play the game and have fun. [24:40] - Some games can even help auditory processing. [25:08] - Stephanie lists some of her favorite games to target specific skills. [27:43] - Some games take too long for Stephanie to play with her clients in a session, but she recommends playing them as a family or looking into the junior version. [28:57] - Stephanie is very active on Instagram where she shares different ways to use games. She is also the co-host of the Learn Smarter podcast. The Balanced Educator Podcast: Education | Mindfulness | Growth Mindset
Supporting struggling learners can be a challenge when we don't know the root of the problem or which strategies to employ. In this episode of The Balanced Educator Podcast, we've invited educational therapists Rachel Kapp and Stephanie Pitts from Learn Smarter, the Educational Therapy Podcast to teach us about how educational therapists support learners, teachers […] The post 134. Executive Functioning and Motivation with Rachel Kapp and Stephanie Pitts from Learn Smarter the Educational Therapy Podcast appeared first on Educalme.
Today’s Episode with Stephanie Pitts:You can find Stephanie Pitts at www.myedtherapist.com, on social media @myedtherapist, catch her on Learn Smarter podcasts on all podcast discoveries, and on her podcast website: learnsmarterpodcast.comStephanie started out as a teacher before she found her true passion as an educational therapist where she is able to help those with learning differences and disabilities to reach their full potential. In a classroom setting, there is only so much time you can devote to one student before being pulled away to the next. Being able to work one-on-one with a student for a longer period of time is much more beneficial and fulfilling for both the student and educational therapist.Stephanie got her first clients through word of mouth and personal relationships. Once she decided to move to LA, she transitioned to receiving new clients through professional relationships and networking.Stephanie’s learning curve came on the business side of things; She had a business buddy who helped with problem solving. She then got a business coach where she learned a great amount about how to run her own business and tips about what to specifically focus on. Resources that are helpful for Stephanie are podcasts and books about how to help learners, as well as her business coach. Stephanie had her first team member in 2017, a couple years after entering the business world.Stephanie has gradually expanded her team of educators. Originally, she had several people reach out to her and asked if she was hiring. After that, she put ads up and used her network to see if anyone knew other educators that would want to join her team.Social media does not necessarily bring in new clients but it does help put her out there as an expert in educational therapy. Looking for gaps has also been beneficial for Stephanie. For example, there was not a podcast for education therapy and that was a gap that Stephanie was able to fill.Although there is not a direct financial return by using social media, there is still huge value in utilizing Instagram or other social media in terms of focusing on your long-term goals and the bigger picture. Once Stephanie started having a lot of work on her hands, having a team, a business manager, and podcast partner has been extremely helpful and supportive for her. Other areas that educators could find profitable value include talking to schools and parents, focusing on one project at a time and making that project sustainable before moving on to the next. Now, Stephanie knows that she should have a lawyer, a CPA, and a bookkeeper. It is a huge undertaking, but if you have this type of support, you will come out the other side so accomplished and proud. In terms of raising rates, it is hard to separate emotions, especially as an educational therapist. Taking out the emotion and offering what you believe you deserve while also being reasonable is the best way to approach raising rates.Owning a business is not easy, but if you stick with it through all of the successes and failures with a great team, you will be successful. If you are a new educator, do not second guess yourself and always trust yourself. Enjoy the show? Leave us a rating and review:https://ratethispodcast.com/earnmoretutoringHelp our podcast grow! Educational therapy is oftentimes an unknown term for parents and families. This podcast episode may even be the first time you've heard it yourself. That is why I am so excited to have a passionate educational therapist as our guest today on the Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast. Rachel Kapp is an educational therapist with an extensive background in the field of education. After working with so many types of students through tutoring in private practice, she became passionate about building relationships with and helping students who learn differently. She completed her coursework in Educational Therapy at the California State University, Northridge in 2015 and her Master's degree in 2016. She is now a sought after educational therapist and co-host of the Learn Smarter Podcast. Rachel's mission is so clear in this episode and to say our missions align is an understatement. Listen to find out how she reignites the love of learning for students on their journey towards becoming independent and autonomous learners. Show Notes: [1:39] - The first podcast that Karen was a guest for was Rachel's podcast Learn Smarter and inspired her to start Diverse Thinking Different Learning. [3:22] - Educational therapy is not typically a term parents are familiar with. As an educational therapist, Rachel works one-on-one with students with different learning profiles to help provide skills and strategies that guide them towards becoming independent and autonomous learners. [4:53] - For many children, there has been a significant struggle over an extended period of time which may have led them to lose their love of learning. [5:21] - Children hear conversations in their home and at school that they aren't performing well enough and get the message that they aren't trying. [6:10] - The first step for Rachel as an educational therapist is to honor the journey they've been on. [8:05] - Rachel and a fellow educational therapist that co-hosts her podcast have come up with a framework called the ABC's of Educational Therapy. The first phase is the assessment phase. [9:14] - During the first phase of gathering information, Rachel listens to the child's explain their experiences and this is often the first time the student has shared this information in a space without judgment. [9:27] - The next stage is the building process. This is where skills and strategies are being built. Rachel also describes what this could look like in virtual learning. [10:57] - Eventually, Rachel is able to take a step back and let the child be independent. Most parents are scared of this because things are working smoothly, but the child is ready. [11:52] - Educational therapy looks different for each student. What works for one child might not be best for another. [13:13] - Educational therapists also serve in a way as a case manager. The parent coaching piece has become very important. [14:38] - Sometimes when we step back, the student falls. But Rachel says this is a necessary step in learning. [15:22] - Learning happens when it is active and productive. It happens when things are hard but not too hard. [16:33] - An educational therapist is not interested in the content being learned. It's about teaching the students how to access the curriculum and giving them strategies on what to do when they don't understand. [17:41] - Teachers have risen to the challenge with virtual learning. Ask for help if needed. [19:56] - Karen and Rachel discuss how writing is a huge challenge. Rachel breaks down how she approaches helping students with writing as an educational therapist. [21:43] - Is it an issue of not being able to think of content or is it an issue of not being able to write it down? [22:59] - Breaking down the writing process to be more achievable is key. The mechanics of writing should be the last step. [24:10] - A lot of schools and teachers are open to different approaches, so ask for clarification. [25:56] - With distance learning, parents are seeing problems that educational therapists have been seeing for a long time, particularly the difficulty of using online portals. [27:10] - Part of the building process for virtual learning is developing systems, routines, and calendars to organize their days. [28:16] - In this building process, the goal is to build a strong system of managing time, managing things, and creating rules. [30:02] - Therapists have a unique perspective because they can see the online portals of all schools and classrooms. Rachel describes what works best in her experience. [31:43] - Rachel shares that in all her years of working as an educational therapist, she has never met a parent that has said that their child does not experience anxiety about learning. [34:13] - Helping kids create their own rules is part of Rachel's process as well. This is empowering. About Our Guest: Rachel grew up in Los Angeles. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Sociology and minored in Jewish Studies. Rachel began tutoring students in high school, eventually choosing to pursue a career in education. For over six years, Rachel was a lead preschool teacher where she gained a firm foundation in explicit teaching. Rachel has been a tutor in private practice since 2004, working with students in a variety of subjects including all levels of math, reading, history and writing. After working with so many types of students over the years and realizing she was passionate about building relationships with and helping students who learn differently, Rachel decided to pursue Educational Therapy. She completed her coursework at the California State University, Northridge in December 2015 and Masters degree in December 2016. In her free time, Rachel loves spending time with her husband, Adam, and their dog, Fritzy, watching Cal Football, cooking for friends, and spinning. Reach out to me at Aurora Remember and let me know what “embracing intensity” means to you. We will feature these in our upcoming anniversary show next week! For now, enjoy another informative show with my inspiring guest who I've been a fan of for quite some time. Seth Perler’s life’s work has been dedicated to helping kids overcome executive functioning challenges so they can have great futures despite our outdated educational systems. Seth’s mission is to help compassionate and proactive parents, educators, and others who care about kids. He wants to give honest, practical, and unconventional approaches to helping complicated, struggling students without BS or misinformation. He wants to teach the world about executive function, which is at the root of student struggles. Seth’s vision is a day when we don’t need executive functioning coaches because education is wildly successful at empowering all students with everything they need to have happy, healthy, and successful lives. Show Highlights: Why Seth is intensely passionate about helping struggling students and changing educators to understand these kids better How Seth grew up as a curious, free-spirited kid who loved animals and nature but never fit into “the box” in school How Seth was labeled as a lazy, irresponsible failure--and his “fire was squelched” How Seth became a teacher of gifted kids but soon became frustrated with the system How Seth’s personal brand of intensity loves nature and the environment and feels the suffering of other people, animals, and plants Why Seth hates to see kids struggle to be understood How Seth is intense with his sensory experiences and emotions How kids’ feelings are invalidated by cultural factors that teach them that acknowledging their feelings is not OK Why Seth had a hopeless and cynical attitude as a kid, knowing he was “not like the other kids” How Seth learned to escape by going into social settings to avoid being alone Why Seth felt trapped by his “darkness” How Seth lived in his problem until he found the tools to step into the solution How Seth uses his fire for good by teaching what he most needs to learn and using what he has struggled with to help others How Seth harnesses the power of his intensity through meditation, the #1 way he understands himself Seth’s advice to those who don’t think they can meditate How Seth helps kids learn to shine through new mindsets, systems, and routines Seth’s advice: Focus on helping others with a heart and spirit of service Meditate and have times of stillness Learn to journal Get in touch with your story to know what is BS and what is truth Resources: Connect with Seth: Seth Perler and Executive Function Summit Find Seth on YouTube and his podcast, Learn Smarter.

On today’s episode, Amanda and Vickie welcome fellow-podcasters, Rachel Kapp and Stephanie Pitts from Learn Smarter: the Educational Therapy Podcast, whose show is based on the work that they do as educational therapists in the greater Los Angeles area. They work one-on-one with learners with different learning profiles and teach them how to become independent and autonomous learners. They started the podcast because not enough people know about educational therapy and the services that they offer, and since their services are rather expensive, they wanted to offer their knowledge to people who didn’t have access to therapy due to geographic location, scheduling conflicts, or financial considerations. Rachel has an office in Beverly Hills, while Stephanie’s office is located in Redondo Beach. Show Highlights: People can claim to be “Educational Therapists” without having the background or training because the industry is not regulated. Please check the Association of Educational Therapists website to make sure that the person you’re interested in working with is properly certified. Rachel and Stephanie provide an overview of their educational background. Executive functioning is a huge area of need that they serve, but they also work with kids who have ADHD or need writing and math remediation. Rachel and Stephanie share some of the most popular episodes of The Learn Smarter podcast, as well as a series that inspires hope: 02: How to Calender 10: ADHD and Executive Function 20: The Perfect Storm: Writing and Executive Functioning Success Stories Series Learn Smarter’s fundamental beliefs are that all students want to please and all students are able to learn. Not every parent has the same academic experience as their child and might have a hard time empathizing, so creating a deeper understanding from parent to child is very important.
