Welcome to episode #933 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #933. Let's dive deep into the transformative insights of Steve Dennis - a strategic advisor, retail leadership expert, and bestselling author. Steve's latest book, Leaders Leap - Transforming Your Company At The Speed Of Disruption, dissects why so many transformations fail and reveals what leaders must do to keep their organizations relevant in an ever-evolving landscape. With a diverse career that includes c-suite roles at two Fortune 500 companies and his current position as President of SageBerry Consulting, Steve brings a wealth of experience to the table. First he was at Sears and then Neiman Marcus Group, where he pioneered customer insight, loyalty, and omnichannel marketing strategies, making him a sought-after voice in retail innovation. Steve underscores the urgency for leaders to aim higher and move faster to navigate a world of abundant choice and zero friction. He argues that being remarkable is not just about standing out but creating an emotional connection with customers. In an era where technology has leveled the playing field, businesses must differentiate themselves and offer value beyond price. Steve stresses the need for agility in leadership, urging leaders to understand the factors impacting their business and respond swiftly to volatility. He warns against the trap of incrementalism and highlights the importance of creating a sense of urgency and embracing change. Steve's insights are not just theoretical - they are grounded in his extensive practical experience and are vital for any leader looking to thrive in today's fast-paced business environment. He is also a Forbes senior contributor and co-host of the Remarkable Retail podcast, which amplifies the themes of his first book, Remarkable Retail - How To Win And Keep Customers In The Age Of Disruption. Takeaways Being remarkable is about creating a distance between your brand and the competition, and making an emotional connection with customers. Leaders need to aim higher and move faster in order to stay relevant and avoid becoming irrelevant or extinct. Technology enables access to information and substitutes, making it crucial for businesses to differentiate themselves and provide value beyond price. Leaders must understand the factors that impact their business and be agile in responding to a volatile and uncertain environment. Creating a sense of urgency and embracing change are essential for driving innovation and staying ahead of disruption. Success anomalies can be misleading and it is important to analyze them critically and not draw general conclusions from them. Attracting and inspiring talent is crucial for the success of a company, and it is important for leaders to create a culture that values and leverages the unique gifts of their employees. Brands taking a stance on social and political issues can be a complex and risky endeavor, and leaders need to carefully consider the impact on their customers and stakeholders. Physical retail still has a role in a digital world, particularly for experiential and social shopping experiences, but it needs to evolve and provide unique value to customers. Survival in the banking industry requires change. Currently, 70% of projects fail, making it evident that success lies not with big, renowned banks but with those that adapt swiftly to customer needs. In today's episode, we therefore delve into the challenges faced by banks, including evolving regulations, emerging technologies, and the urgency for transformation. The primary strategic shift revolves around prioritizing the customer and comprehending their desires. In addition, we touch on the radical changes banks need to undergo and how to make those change long-lastin, by ensuring that everyone comprehends the purpose and goals behind the transformation. By this, projects shift from 70% failure to 70% success rates. Furthermore, we explore how OKRs can enhance customer focus and their implementation in new product/service development within the banking industry and how finance leaders can successfully work with OKRs. Join me on the Fast Track to Grant Writer: www.teresahuff.com/vip Several months ago I was at a large nonprofit conference in Nashville. While wandering up and down the booths, one caught my eye. They were giving away macaroons…delicious, colorful, many-flavored, handmade macaroons. *Sigh.* The macaroons worked their magic and I quickly became friends with the two coworkers running the booth. Turns out one of them, Dave Raley, was at another conference just the month before in Milwaukee - and so was I! We were both presenters at that conference, but somehow our paths hadn't crossed there. At any rate I'm glad we finally met because, aside from the delightful macaroons, Dave and I have kept in touch and he's a wonderful person. That's why I wanted you to meet him too. Today you get to meet Dave Raley, a consultant who helps organizations take care of their economic engine through innovation, growth, and scaling. Dave points out we should pay attention to important trends in the amount of giving, type of giving, and who does the giving. Trends To best make the type of impact you are working towards it is important to review your current situation. First, look inward and review the things you do to produce revenue. Secondly, look outward and pay attention to trends. Trends are like waves. Just like when you're trying to catch a wave surfing, you can miss waves by paddling too early or too late. You need to match the speed and be on top of it to be able to ride the wave. An example of a trend that we're currently in the middle of is the Subscription Economy. How to Best Use the Subscription Economy We're currently living in a Subscription Economy. Not long ago, a person's typical monthly payments included the necessities of life like mortgages, car payments, and water bills. Now we subscribe to much more every day. Things like Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, softwares, gyms, food - all these point to the subscription economy we live in. This has transformed the way donors and customers think about recurring transactions. It has normalized the concept of monthly giving and encouraged it through the ease of it all. Consumers and donors see monthly payments as a normal part of life and as a good and doable thing. This helps create predictability for organizations, including nonprofits, since they can have an idea of their monthly incoming revenue. Say a nonprofit wants to ramp up subscription giving: Take stock of what you've got. Look at your recurring donors and the long term value. You need to know where you are so you know where you can go. Prioritize your monthly giving program. Make it easy to see and use on your website or another type of functional giving platform. Tips for the Subscription Economy: Donors like convenience. Automated giving can help your revenue. Don't limit your goal and therefore limit your plan. Aim high. Look at your giving program and how to better use your resources. Challenge Question: How can you rethink and maximize the subscription economy we are living in? Meet Dave Raley: Consultant, speaker, and writer Dave Raley is the founder of Imago Consulting, a firm that helps faith-informed organizations generate profitable growth by developing sustainable innovation. He's also the co-founder and host of the Purpose & Profit Podcast, a show about the surprising ideas at the intersection of nonprofit causes and for-profit brands. Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time by Howard Schultz https://amzn.to/34TaPvn There is no denying the buisness and marketing genius of former Starbucks CEO and now chairman emeritus, Howard Schultz. This book is an honest look back at the principles that have shaped the Starbucks phenomenon. Schultz shares the wisdom he has gained from his quest to make great coffee part of the American experience in a frank way that feels approachable as well as awe-striking, regardless of how you feel about the coffee. Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godinhttps://amzn.to/2Fyx8hiAn FMCG brand marketing client that I really respect and love working with recommended this as a must read for anyone in the world of brand and beyond. Purple Cow is another one that I've heard a lot of excerpts from, but not read cover to cover yet, so is eagerly anticipated on the book list. Inspiring Leadership: Staying Afloat in Turbulent Times by Jane Cranwell-Ward, Andrea Bacon, Rosie Mackiehttps://amzn.to/3428ijj Combining the latest thinking on human performance at the turn of the 21st century with findings from the BT Global Challenge race, this book, recommended by a coaching client and podcast guest, demonstrates how to inspire others, sustain high performance and competitive advantage and keep a healthy work-life balance. The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less by Barry Schwartzhttps://amzn.to/2H5cZjL This book has been a fundamental re-read for me, at any life or business juncture since 2010. It's a powerful reminder that whether we're buying a pair of jeans, ordering a cup of coffee, selecting a long-distance carrier, applying to college, or choosing a doctor everyday decisions—both big and small—have become increasingly complex due to the overwhelming abundance of choice with which we are presented. This book offers eleven practical steps on how to limit choices to a manageable number, have the discipline to focus on those that are important and ignore the rest, and ultimately derive greater satisfaction from the choices you have to make. Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decision by Dan Arielyhttps://amzn.to/2T3GdlkIn a similar vein to The Paradox of Choice, this book addresses why smart people make irrational decisions every day: Why can a 50p aspirin do what a 5p aspirin can't? If an item is "free" it must be a bargain, right? It's an intriguing, witty and utterly original look at why we all make illogical decisions that'll help you reconsider your work 'influencing' consumer behaviour, to the decisions you yourself make as a consumer.

Standing out in a crowded marketplace is an age-old problem that plagues service providers. In his book, "The Purple Cow", Seth Godin likens it to being part of a herd of brown cows, fighting the battle for attention in the sea of sameness. His strategy for standing out? Become a Purple Cow through your marketing. This book was written in 2002, in a different media landscape, but its principles are still rock solid today. Today, I'm joined by Glenn Twiddle, an entrepreneur and coach who built his business on the Purple Cow principles. He shares the insights he took away from the book, and how he still applies them today. Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode How Glenn grew his business by borrowing a little paint from Purple Cows You don't have to be a Purple Cow yourself to benefit from the strategy. Glenn was able to leverage the authority, celebrity and credibility of people like Gary Vee and Richard Branson to increase his own, like the supporting act for a big band. Purple Cow products vs Purple Cow marketing Not everyone can build a purple cow product, but that doesn't mean we can't use purple cow marketing strategies. If you have a commodity product, the only way to stand out in the sea of sameness is to make it fun, outrageous and as different as possible. Why the Purple Cow concept is so timeless and universal As products change, we can use the same purple cow marketing skills to get the message read, heard and consumed by an audience in any medium we choose. This can be transferred from product to product and industry to industry. And why do you think an internal culture needs to be very impactful in order to execute a strong external culture? Could you explain to us in very layman terms, what does it mean to re humanize people? What are we lacking that we need re humanization? Could you share with us what does that really mean? Could you also share with us what's the one online resource, tool, website or app that you absolutely can't live without in your business? This quote kind of helps to get you back on track and get you refocused if for any chance you got derailed. Highlights Darin's Journey When asked about his journey, Darin shared that he feels like it may be a little bit non typical, so for instance, he never graduated the university, so he didn't go to college, he did but he didn't graduated as his father said very good advice to him at that age, “Maybe college isn't for you.” He was always entrepreneurial, he saw that in him and thought that he should pursue that and kind of get after doing his own thing. He grew up on a farm, hard working all his life, got given a good what they call there a Midwestern work ethic and ended up moving to Colorado in 1995 when he was 21 years old and have been there ever since. So, then graduated school but then started this kind of painting business out in Colorado when he was young, he grew that business, it was actually successful. But then in the late 90s, early 2000s he started being interested in all things to do with internet marketing, Pay Per Click strategies, On Demand strategies, things like that and he got involved in the marketing business, was lucky enough to get ownership in that business, to sell that business and then do that again with another marketing company and then ended up working at a TV station actually running online, marketing the website salespeople for that, also content creators for that and he learned a lot about mass media marketing and really led him to think about what he didn't like about that led him to create BombBomb which he does today. What BombBomb Does and How Can That Help a Business Me: Now, we had the awesome pleasure of interviewing one of your employees, Ethan Beaute last year, we had him on our podcast as well as on a Facebook Live and I was supremely blown away by how he responded to my messages through video, I thought it was just brilliant. And so, of course when you reached out to me and I was like, “Oh my goodness, another person from BombBomb but even the person who created it, this is amazing.” So, could you share with our audience for those who may not have listened to Ethan's episode last year or never heard of BombBomb, what is it that BombBomb does and how can that help a business? Darin shared that first of all, he loves that guy (Ethan). And actually Ethan is a dear friend and he convinced him to leave that TV station where they worked together and come to BombBomb with him. And so, he's been there over 10 years, he couldn't have done it without him, he's fantastic, he's their Chief Evangelist, he's a good friend and a valued, valued person to him. He believes and we at BombBomb believe that all human beings has an intrinsic value, that we are special, that we are unique, how we communicate with each other is unique. And the software that they enable you to use is sending video messages to the people who matter in your life, which could be the people in your life, personal life, it could be colleagues that you work with, it could be your prospects, it could be your existing customers. So, you can send yourself video messages so they can see you, know you, and understand you in that way, so it's very simple to do, takes no time at all and they allow you to do in every message platform that you may be using. So that could be your email, that could be in social media messenger systems, it could be in LinkedIn for example, so anywhere you're saying a message, they allow you to use a video as well. Why We Should Use Video to Connect and Communicate Daily with People Darin stated that if you believe, like he just mentioned that we are unique human beings, the way we talk is unique, then you should be considering video. And here's a very good example, if he was to ask 10 business owners: “What is your most valuable asset in your business?” He believes at least 9 out of 10, maybe 10 out of 10 would tell him that their people are their most valuable asset. But more often, what we're doing is we're hiding these best assets, the ones that we spent a long time interviewing, if you're interviewing a salesperson, you're trying to say, “Are they good with people? Are they good at presenting passion and enthusiasm for your product?” You're trying to assess all these things about people, and then we hire them and then we make them look like and feel like everyone else with text email, texting, phones, all that stuff, phone's better. But behind these technologies that we have chat, we're just like everyone else. He thinks we're removing the most uniqueness that we can bring in our people, our diversity, how they interact, and all the things that we want in our culture, in our business, we're withholding from our customers in a lot of ways when we don't put people in front of people more often. What is Customer Experience and Why it Matters Me: Now, as we talk about video, and connecting with people daily, and really seeing the intrinsic value in a human being, in your view, Darin, what is customer experience and why do you think it matters? Darin shared that he believes the customer experience is every touch point that you have with either potential customers or existing customers, anything that could be an in person event, it could be a podcast, it could be a webinar, it could be when he calls your business, and what's the experience he gets when that phone is picked up by someone who works there, that's it. So, let him frame it this way. If there were two businesses that did the exact same thing, they sell the exact same service, for the exact same price, how do you decide which one to choose if they're very much the same? He believes you choose the one you like and that could be for a lot of different reasons. But the experience that you bring ultimately becomes your unique selling proposition that is what makes us unique in a business. He has a software business, he competes against people who do similar things to what he does, he has some features they don't have, they have some features that he doesn't have, but they are basically the same and at the end of the day, people are going to choose who they know, like and trust, he still believes that that's what they do. So, in that case, his customer experience has to be better, he wants to deliver on that more over than anything else. It matters in the product, it matters in all these motions that we look at in a business, but to him, again, customer experience is your unique identifier. Values that BombBomb is Built On Me: I totally support everything that you just said. And I think a lot of businesses lose focus of that. Now, in trying to deliver that customer experience as you mentioned, is your unique proposition. I think it's important; the organization has to have a really good culture, because customer experience starts from within, how you deal with your employees, how responsive you are to them, how you support them in whatever initiatives they're trying to accomplish. And of course, all businesses came into existence because we're all trying to solve some problem for customers that have a need. And so, could you share with us maybe some of the values that BombBomb is built on that has helped BombBomb to really be able to realize fulfilling those needs for your customers? And why do you think an internal culture needs to be very impactful in order to execute a strong external culture? Darin shared that they have five core values at BombBomb, they are Relationships, Humility, Flexibility, Service, and Fun. So, those are five core values and he thinks that really, businesses need to give the people that work there a reason to work there, that's beyond money, that's beyond the work necessarily. Because you can go answer the phone anywhere, you can go do customer success service anywhere, you can do sales anywhere, you can run these teams anywhere now and from anywhere for that matter. He believes that we want to give people a purpose behind why they do what they do at BombBomb. So, they do that in a few different ways. First of all, their book is called Re humanize Your Business and that's what they want to do with their product but their mission at BombBomb is to humanize the planet. And this is what he means by it has to matter more than the word. And locally, they support a few organizations, one is called Dream Centers in Colorado Springs, it actually provides free health care for women and also it provides homeless families off of the streets of their city and into a safe place where they can thrive, where they can go to school, where the mothers can get an education. They have the women's clinic and they have a thing called Mary's Home and they're fantastic. And those are two organizations they support and they support them financially, but they also support them with their time. So, every year they do a trunk or treat for the children at Mary's Home. And another organization they support is called the Springs Rescue Mission and it's in Colorado Springs, and they support the homeless population, helping them to get out of homelessness, a cycle of homelessness, help them to get food to eat. Just last week, he took about 30 BombBomb folks down there and they did a barbecue where they cooked burgers, he smelled like Burger King when he got back. They grilled like 300 burgers and hotdogs and they serve those people. So, it's beyond money, why do they do what they do? Because they're humanizing your business but they're also trying to humanize the planet and that planet starts right their own backyard in Colorado Springs, Colorado. What is Means to Re Humanize People Me: You spoke a little bit just now about rehumanizing your business. And when we read your bio, a big part of BombBomb's mission is to re humanize the planet. And so, could you explain to us in very layman terms, what does it mean to re humanize people? What are we lacking that we need re humanization? Could you share with us what does that really mean? Darin shared that he thinks its two things in your business it may exist that he thinks participating right now in this insanely, it's like nuclear proliferation but it's different, it's this digital pollution. So, after he gets off of this call, he will have no less than 30 unsolicited emails in his inbox, LinkedIn will have a few and people are just being bombarded. And so, we need to get back to building know, like and trust with the people that we want to work with. We need to communicate in a way that solves problems for people we know that we can solve problems for. He thinks the problem right now in marketing and sales is that we're just holistically blasting everyone to kingdom come with unwanted, unsolicited messaging. And frankly, he doesn't even believe it's from real people anymore. So, all we're doing is we're desensitizing people, nobody believes that you actually wrote the email anymore, actually wrote the LinkedIn messenge, they thing it was written for you, sent by some sort of system and what that does is it takes away the idea of reciprocity on his part. Five years ago, even three years ago, if you sent him an email even if he wasn't interested, the reciprocity effect says, “I'm going to respond to you even if I'm not interested.” Now, we've made it so very easy to ignore everyone, everyone is complicit in this digital pollution that we're all participating in, we send too much of stuff that doesn't matter. Therefore, the stuff that does goes by the wayside. So, he believes using personal video, personal messaging to people succinctly for them, to them, from human to human, to solve the problem that you very well solved for this type of business. So, you have to have that figured out. What's the problem I solve? How do we succinctly solve it in 20 seconds, deliver a video for that person? Or in the customer experience, side, if it's retention. Don't make him feel like just another number of your business. How many customers do you have? Don't make him feel like number 569, make him feel like the only one. And so, how do you do that, you do that by taking time and sending personalized communications whenever possible, doesn't have to be every time but he calls them “Moments That Matter.” What are the very important moments that matter when he knows? Easy way to do this is to say to yourself, “Would this be better said face to face? If so, send a video.” So, that's re humanizing your business. We're re humanizing the planet or humanizing these things, he believes people have intrinsic value, he believes all over the world people are being dehumanized right now probably more than they ever have been, ever. We have more slavery, we have more sex trafficking, we have more abuse, we need to get in front of that. And to him, we need to do our part here and so that's why, as he mentioned, they support these local organizations. They actually even support a community in Africa, where some kids in Africa got to adopt BombBombers, it was amazing. So, the kids got to look at pictures of people who work here, choose them to be someone they want to communicate with and then, of course, they help the organization but they help with food and medical care and things like that. But he's got to tell you, some of the best joy happens from these kids sending letters to people who work here. And that's a connection that they build. So, they're now we're re humanizing the people of BombBomb by doing that, just as much as they are those kids in Africa. So, that's a big part of their mission. He just believes that the world we live in, if we just want to turn a blind eye to it, that's not responsible as a business owner. App, Website or Tool that Darin Absolutely Can't Live Without in His Business When asked about online resource that he cannot live without in his business, Darin shared that it's a pretty generic one, but it's Spotify. What couldn't he live without; he can't live without a podcast. He listens to podcasts like crazy, he got a bit of a commute, and he enjoys it. His kids play soccer 4 days a week, so when he's waiting for them to be done; he's on the podcast. So, he's trying to build himself up to that. So, he's going to say Spotify. Books That Have Had the Greatest Impact on Darin When asked about books that have the biggest impact, Darin shared that Seth Godin was a very much a part of the foundation of this business in early 2000s. He has read every Seth Godin book he's ever written. And so, he's just going say Seth Godin. So, Seth Godin Podcast, Seth Godin Books. The early ones, he thinks it was even Purple Cow, New Edition: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable it was really transformational. Just about being unique and how you stand out. And I believe the book, he might get this wrong is 1000 true fans, it might have been one of his earlier books is the idea if you have 1000 fans, that you'll never have to work again. He thinks we're seeing this, he was an early projector of this, this influencer movement that we see very common today and that's exactly what he was talking about in that book. And that's how they thought about sending video messaging that you could be this influencer. And then he's going to say, Verne Harnish wrote a book called Scaling Up: How a Few Companies Make It…and Why the Rest Don't (Rockefeller Habits 2.0) and then Scaling Up 2.0 and it's about mastering the Rockefeller habits as he calls it. And these are just these business motions that has made them very successful at BombBomb, how to run the business, how to plan for the business, how to do stand ups in the morning, all these things are very fundamentally ingrained in who they are at BombBomb. So, Seth Godin and Scaling Up 2.0, those are his two recommendations. What Darin is Really Excited About Now! Darin shared that he's really excited about this growth team that they have put together, he gets to lead, it's fantastic, it's a cross functional team many people coming from lots of different parts of the organization are focused on how do they get after better growth for the business? So, that means acquiring new customers, better keeping the customers that they have, making the product more aligned towards those things. So, it's been a lot of fun and he loves that team. Where Can We Find Darin Online Website – www.bombbomb.com LinkedIn – Darin Dawson Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Darin Uses When asked about quote or saying that he tends to revert to, Darin shared that it's Peter Drucker and the quote is, “Focus is the key to all economic success.” So, if he needs to get refocused, if his team does, he brings that out. Will Laurenson is a customer value optimization consultant with 9 years experience optimising customer journeys to convert more traffic into customers, and retain those customers for longer helping companies achieve more profitable growth. He is also the host of the Customers Who Click Podcast, interviewing guests from across the marketing spectrum to give actionable insights into growth. Questions Could you share a little bit about your journey? How it is that you got to where you are today? How did you end up into customer value optimization? Could you share with our listeners why you think brands need to focus on customer value optimization, not just necessarily from a subscription perspective, but just generally speaking, if you're a retail business, or if you're a service oriented versus product oriented, why is value optimization so important in delivering that great brand experience? Could you give our listeners maybe two or three tips that you think their companies could utilize to get better customer retention? What's the one online resource, tool, website or app that you absolutely can't live without in your business? Could you share with us maybe one or two books that have had the biggest impact on you? It could be a book that you read a very long time ago, or even a book you read recently, but it really has just impacted you greatly. Could you also share with us if there is one thing that's going on in your life right now that you're really excited about? It could be something that you're working on to develop yourself or your people. Where can listeners find you online if they wanted to connect with you further? Do you have a quote are saying that during times of adversity or challenge, you'll tend to revert to this quote, it kind of helps to get you back on track or get you refocused? Highlights Will’s Journey Will shared that he actually started in a few start-ups. He started in one start-up, but his early career was start-ups, so he did a bit of everything, generally marketing but kind of covering a wide range of channels responsible for pretty much everything. But what he found was, very often companies would kind of hand the marketing team a bunch of cash and say, “Go and acquire customers.” that was basically the job. And it doesn't work like that especially in the start-ups where the product is still a work in progress. So what he started to do was work more closely with product teams and development teams to actually take into account customer feedback and build out a better experience. You're not going to convert people into customers or retain those customers for very long if your experience is rubbish. He has got quite a bit of experience in the subscription space, that tends to be where he works. And obviously, if it's a magazine, it's a bit different but if you're talking about a digital product, and actually one that he worked for was kind of like Netflix for magazines. If the app experience is not very good, you're not going to keep people, they're not going to pay that monthly fee for something that they're not finding particularly convenient. If they can't find the content they want to read, if it's not recommending them content, you're just not going to be able to keep people. So, that's where he kind of went down this path of customer comes from value optimization. And it kind of stuck with him for the years, it's always something he was working on regardless of what his role was, and once or twice, he did specialize a little bit more in the marketing area in house, but it was always a focus on value. Like he said, if you can't retain those customers, you're not going to make much money off them. And likewise, if you focus too much on the conversion side, you could raise the conversion rates really high, but you just damaged value, if you incentivize too much, give people loads of discounts and offers, you're obviously not making much money there. But you're convincing people to buy for the wrong reason. So, that's why his focus is customer value optimization. And I went solo basically, November 2019 to just work with direct to consumer businesses on this. Brands Focusing on Customer Value Optimization Me: Could you share with our listeners why you think brands need to focus on customer value optimization, not just necessarily from a subscription perspective, but just generally speaking, if you're a retail business, or if you're a service oriented versus product oriented, why is value optimization so important in delivering that great brand experience? Will shared that at the end of the day, every business wants to make loads of money and wants to be profitable. If you can only really do that, if you are optimizing the value of those customers and building up their value over time, as opposed to just acquiring new customers every day, every week, every month, you're going to have those acquisition costs associated with it. A lot of the time businesses do give discounts to first time customers, so that drops the value of that customer. So if you focus purely on acquisition, you're just not very profitable with every customer. So you're going to have to spend more money and acquire more customers. Whereas, if you focus on retention and building up that value over time. If Facebook or Google does something that affects your business, or as prices get more and more expensive to acquire customers, you're not going to be hurt by that so much because you're also focusing on the customers you've got and getting more and more value out of them. Plus, you tend to get better levels of loyalty. And kind of ambassadorship. If people really like your business and are happy to spend lots of money with it, they will probably also be happy to tell other people about it. So you're not only getting that direct value from each individual customer, you're also getting them telling other people to come to you, which means you're getting a potentially better customer anyway, because it's someone who's been referred. So he generally sees it as a bit of an increase in value there. But also, you're not paying the acquisition cost for that customer as well. Tips to Utilize to Get Better Customer Retention Me: And I guess ideally, all companies aim to have a high customer retention. So maybe could you give our listeners maybe two or three tips that you think their companies could utilize to get better customer retention? Will stated that the overall big tip, he would say is, give your customers value. So that's a term that's thrown around by marketers a lot, and it can be a bit meaningless. But what he means is, always explain to them the value of that product or service to them, make sure you're not describing just the features and saying, “Yes, if you're looking for a bookshelf, this is a bookshelf, this is what it's made of, this is how many shelves it's got.” You want to explain why that's going to be beneficial to someone and get them to really feel like this is actually the right product for them, it doesn't just meet those basic functional requirements, but it's actually going to kind of make them smile every time they see it or they're going to feel like their life's going to be better because they have that product. And then that kind of that idea of giving value should be everywhere, really in the business. So whenever you send out email marketing, for example, you don't have to just sell, you don't have to be sending an email every week to customers, just saying, “Here are some new products.” You can give information, you can give tips, you can give advice. He has got one client at the moment, and they're doing a series of emails which actually has no end points in mind. But basically, each email is just a research piece, it gets put into the form of maybe an infographic or some bullet points or something and it is just purely to explain what people need to be doing to feel better. It's kind of to do with how to sleep better, how to reduce pain. So, it's just loads of tips and they get sales from those emails. So even though the email doesn't push products much, they're kind of there at the bottom, but the main focus on the of the email is that value and giving people information. And then people are happy with that, they see the value of it and then they go and buy the products. So, kind of with that in mind, email marketing in mind, one thing that's so important is just is marketing automation. No matter what size the business is, marketing automation is just incredibly valuable, if you're a small business, you can get them set up and they will just drive revenue for you on autopilot and you don't have to be going in and manually building emails each week or every fortnight. So, it can really help with kind of resource issues as well, if you have a small team, you don't want to be wasting time doing that, when you could just set up a few email sequences and have that drive revenue for you forever, while you focus on other areas. And if you combine that with that value piece, instead of just selling, they will just work really well for you. You can do abandoned cart emails, welcome series, post purchase, loads of different types of emails you can do. And you can provide value at all of them. What most people tend to do with an abandoned cart is send you an email saying, “Here is the item you had in your cart, do you want to buy it?” Just a reminder, that's it. But now, while some people will have abandoned the cart, because they got distracted or something came up and they had to deal with it, so they might come back. You've also got a huge number of people who are not fully convinced that that product is what they want to buy and that your business is the one they want to buy it from. So, that abandoned cart email is a great way of dealing with those concerns depending on what your product is. If you're selling electrics like a washing machine or something, you could send out the manual or something or the manual for that product, something like that. So people can check all the details, all the specifications and be absolutely sure it's the right washing machine or dishwasher for them. You can do some really simple things that don't really cost you anything to do, but could make that customer's life a lot easier, therefore more likely to convert. So, it's giving people value kind of all the time, email marketing, email automation, really, really important. And the final thing is make really, really good use of your customer service team. So many businesses just see it as like a cost centre, it's a team that has to be there because people will contact the business so we need to pay some people to sit at a desk and just answer these emails all day. But actually, there's so much that you can get from the customer service team, they can turn unhappy customers into happy ones, they can answer people's questions, and cause those people to actually then buy the product. And even better, if you collect all that information and pass it on to the relevant teams, you can then make the website better, the emails better, your social media better, whatever, so that those questions actually disappear, they're no longer people coming into customer service for it, because you've actually fixed the problem and people no longer need to ask those questions. So, he thinks there's so much value you can get out customer service and it's so easy, pretty much all you got to do is set some categories up, some tags in your customer service tool and tag each email that comes in. And then on a monthly or quarterly basis, depending on how big the business is, just review the queries that have come in. You'll pick an area once a month maybe and just pick one of the categories and just dig into what people have actually been asking, what's been going on, and then see where you can go fix that problem so that no one faces it. App, Website or Tool that Will Absolutely Can’t Live Without in His Business When asked about an online resource that he cannot live without in his business, Will shared that he has quite a few. He’s got some like accounting things that are really useful. Dext is really handy, he just forward all his receipts onto it, takes care of all that. And he thinks a really cool one is Otter.ai. So, Otter like the animal and ai. It's an AI transcription tool. So he actually uses it for his podcast, after the recording he loads the podcast episode into Otter.ai, it transcribes the podcast for him and then he can really easily pick out some quotes, pick out key points for the summary for social media posts and things like that. He initially tried to use it to do an actual transcription of the podcast but he found that he had to do about an hour editing every single episode to tidy it up because it's not perfect, because AI is not there yet, so, he stopped doing that. But he uses it to help him write the summary and things. It probably cuts a good 30 to 45 minutes out of the process each week. He guesses it doesn't sound much but he really likes it, he just finds it so useful. Me: And of course, if you're cutting 30 to 45 minutes off of any activity, when you add that up, it makes a big difference. Books That Have Had the Greatest Impact on Will When asked about books that have had the biggest impact, Will shared that Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin is really, really good. It's all about standing out but being different. Having something to actually say that is unique and makes people pay attention to your business and not just view you as another website. He thinks honestly, a lot of fashion sites are really bad at that. You've got the top tier brands which are fantastic. By top tier, he doesn't mean the publicly listed completely, the massive ones. You've got those the handful of companies that do it really, really well and stand out. But the majority of them even look almost identical on the website, there's nothing that makes them stand out. Major clothing is a little bit different, but most of them are pretty basic. So Purple Cow he would definitely recommend reading. And the one that he read fairly recently was last year actually, The Adweek Copywriting Handbook: The Ultimate Guide to Writing Powerful Advertising and Marketing Copy from One of America’s Top Copywriters by Joseph Sugarman, which is just absolutely fantastic. When you look at it and you kind of read the name, you think it's going to be like a textbook or something or a workbook, it's not, it's kind of more written like a first person, almost like a story really. It's a bit like a course but not sure how to describe it, it's really, really good. It's partly about copywriting but it's something you can take into so many other kind of aspects and areas of the business. It's all around, for example, the first sentence should make the reader wants to read the second sentence, that's the job of it, is to make you read the next bit and on and on and on, things like that. And then there's quite a bit about kind of consumer behaviour and psychology which is really, really interesting. So, he really enjoyed that, that's just sits on his coffee table actually, quite well broken out in chapters. So it's pretty easy to just open up, read a quick tip, it takes two to three minutes, read a few tips, and then put it down. It's obviously not like a novel, where you probably want to keep up with it, quite a lot in order to make sure you don't forget the story. What Will is Really Excited About Now! Will shared that the one big thing that he’s super excited about at the moment is he’s actually selling his flat and buying a new place. He stated that that's not quite work related but that's all going on which is really cool. So, he’s getting a house, just kind of outside London in the UK. But otherwise, he’s quite excited about the new direction that he’s taking his business in. He is leaking down into that subscription space, so everything he does will be more focused around subscription businesses because he likes working with them, he likes the business model, he likes the fact that you have to place that focus on retention as well and build up the lifetime value. So, at the moment, he’s redoing his website a little bit, he’s creating some new content and new eBooks and things which will be available on the website. That's probably the big thing that's going on with the business right now. Just that slight repositioning, so that he has that purple cow moment really, he wants to stand out a bit more. Where Can We Find Will Online Email – www.customerswhoclick.com Twitter – @WillLaurenson LinkedIn – Will Laurenson Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Will Uses When asked if he has a quote or saying that he tends to revert to, Will shared that probably not to be honest, he’s not really that sort of person. One thing he finds himself saying a lot is, “We'll make it work.” Just applies to anything really. It happens a lot when he’s cooking, he tends to forget ingredients or something and just say, “I will make it work.” Applies to the business as well, if he’s struggling with something, just got to find a way to make it work. Being Remarkable, Profitable and Impactful is what we love our service providers to be. Bottom line: If you want to improve your productivity, Danny has the tools you need to make it happen. In the words of today’s guest, keep making a ruckus, -Trace Danny Bauer will walk us through this Focus Funnel Can I eliminate a task?/Do I have to do it? AmiSights: Financing the Future For Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs
On today's episode, Ami Kassar speaks with Eric Keiles, Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Square 2 Marketing, to discuss marketing lessons learned during the pandemic, and what has changed forever. Eric Keiles is a leading sales and marketing strategist focused on pioneering a new marketing methodology. Eric, along with his business partner Mike Lieberman, coined the concept, Reality Marketing™ to describe how businesses can utilize cost effective inbound marketing tactics to achieve dramatic revenue growth. They are leading the revolution in how entrepreneurs change the way they think about marketing their companies. Marketing Sherpa has called the duo “original and contrarian marketers”. Their popular first book, Reality Marketing Revolution is a thesis on the changing world of inbound marketing and the dramatic shift in buyer behavior. It introduces concepts like “The Red & Blue Test”, “Being Remarkable” and the “Cup of Coffee Challenge”. Verne Harnish, The “Growth Guy”, named the book, the “best how-to marketing book ever”. Their second book, Fire Your Sales Team Today, is upsetting the traditional sales department by demonstrating through many real life examples how effective marketing makes the “traditional sales guy” obsolete. It outlines a complete inbound sales process, too. Eric is also the editor of a weekly e-newsletter reaching almost 20,000 business owners and entrepreneurs focusing on this topic. Eric is also the founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Square 2 Marketing. Square 2 Marketing was named the “Inbound Agency of the Year” by HubSpot in 2013 and 2015. A natural entrepreneur himself, Eric has founded and grown eight companies since 1997. Prior to founding Square 2 Marketing, Eric created The Stitches Catalog and The Logo Workshop, two national graphic design and promotional products companies. He is a former franchisee of a national franchise and currently operates a travel and tourism hospitality group in Philadelphia. A popular writer and public speaker, Eric has provided expert insight on panels and speaking appearances throughout America's entrepreneurial community. He also hosts Square 2 Marketing's monthly workshop and webinar series to help business owners learn effective marketing strategies for their businesses. Eric is also a guest lecturer at several universities. A graduate of George Washington University (BA) and Temple University (MBA), Eric and his family reside in Center City Philadelphia. Questions Could you share with us a little bit about your journey, how it is that you got into this whole customer service? You have written many, many books, and I had the privilege of you sending me a copy of the one of your most recent one “Inside Your Customers Imagination: 5 Secrets for Creating Breakthrough Products, Services and Solutions. And I found it really, really insightful. Could you share maybe one to three things that you think is really critical for us to get inside our customer’s imagination? In your book, you talk about curiosity, being grounded, discovery, you talk about trust and you talk about passion, of those five secrets that you believe are breakthrough tactics or strategies in order to really get into your customer’s imagination. Which one do you think is the most important? Could you share with us what's the one online resource, tool, website or app that you absolutely can't live without in your business? Could you share with us maybe one or two books that have had the biggest impact on you, maybe books that inspired you to become an even better writer? Could you share with us maybe one thing that's going on in your life right now that you're really excited about - either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people? Where can listeners find you online? Do you have a quote or saying that during times of adversity you’ll tend to revert to this quote, it kind of helps you get back on track or to get you more focus? Highlights Chip’s Journey Chip shared that he has always had a fascination and an interest in the customer; he studied it in graduate school. What makes people buy, what influences customers to make decisions that they do and how organizations manage that influence and how do they create cultures that create great experiences? Most of his work has been focused on the customer experience. That is what when we encounter a customer, whether it's face to face, the ear to ear, click to click, we give that experience in such a way that it's a memorable experience and a very positive way. So it's been an exciting, he has been at it for 40 years now. He’s still learning every day, but we're all customers, so it gives him a chance to hopefully influence how that's done through the organizations that he works. Getting Inside Customer’s Imagination Chip shared that he thinks it starts with recognizing that the customer’s imagination is inside. And he likes to think of it as a door open only from the inside. So, the challenge becomes, how do I create a relationship or a partnership with the customer in such a way that they want to open that door and share their insights, ideas, creative thoughts in a way that helps them with us, co-create new products, services and solutions. So the book is really about how do I build that relationship, how do I build that partnership that creates a sense of excitement and safety and a willingness for the customer to open that door and share their ingenuity and insight and creativity. Me: And so, we really have to dig deep into what the customer is looking for. A big part of when I was reading through some parts of the book, it focused on ensuring that you have curiosity. And I'd like for you to share with us in your own words. What exactly is curiosity, especially in the sense of customer experience? Why should we be curious and how do we exercise that skill? Chip shared that he thinks part of it is the one of the ways which we demonstrate we really care about the customer. We all go to reunions, family reunions or school reunions. And we always engage, we eat too much food and we engage in a lot of superficial conversation. But every now and then somebody, a family member or friend, demonstrates that they really are interested in us. And they ask different kind of questions, “You still work in and are you still doing this?” And so, they really want to know what makes us tick, what do we feel and what matters to us. And we walk away from those conversations feeling not just heard and understood, but truly valued. So he thinks part of curiosity is how we demonstrate that deep curiosity. One of the techniques he talks about in the book is called Be the Customer. And he borrowed it from most parents who have children who are in Little League, when that child has the bat and the pitcher is about to throw the ball, they'll yell to that child, “Be the ball, be the ball.” Which is all designed to get the focus, focus on that ball, it coming their way. It increases the likelihood that they'll be hitting it. And so, he thinks in much the way be the ball, be the customer, try to be the customer. He gave you a funny example. His wife's hairdresser, Johnny Odair, has been known to get a permanent. He said, “Johnny, why do you get a permanent?” He said, “I realized that when women get a permanent is often one of the most uncomfortable and awkward situation, so if I figured if I went through what they went through, then I would see the world through their eyes and because of that, I made changes in the experience to make it a more comfortable experience for them.” That's to him, a great example of him working to try to deeply understand a customer, when the customer senses that sense of quest to understand them at a deeper level. Then they feel a sense of kinship with us, a sense of partnership with us. So it's looking for techniques, it might not be just talking to the customer or just doing customer research, it might be talking to people who know the customer in a different way. He gave an example and he uses this example in the book. He has a friend of mine, John Longstry. John used to be the General Manager of a huge hotel in Dallas, Texas, and he realized that he wasn't learning enough about what really was important to customers through the front desk. Now, if you think about checking into a hotel, when you check out, typically the front desk will say how was your stay? And we usually have a one-word answer, fine. And not much learning is going on from the word fine. So, what did he do? He'd already been doing focus groups with the taxi drivers who frequented his property to take guest to the airport, DFW airport. And so every quarter he would hold a focus group, he buys these taxi drivers who frequent his property hanging out because it's a nice fare from his hotel to the airport so a lot of them would hang around to take now, Uber, Lyft. But then it was it was taxi drivers. And so he would hold focus groups with these taxi drivers. And what he would learn is not just information and understanding, but insights. For example, he learned that when the customer complained to the taxi driver that their towels in their bathroom smelled a little scorched like they'd been in the dryer too long and housekeeping, what they really were worried about was a hotel fire started in housekeeping or dust bowl under their bed, in their room. What they really were concerned about were are there bugs in my room? So the goal was not just information that gave you superficial information. Like there's a light out in the parking lot, thank you so much, but when the customer spotted a security light out in the parking lot that was burned out, they worried about security in their hallway. Well, by taking that insight level, he was able to make improvements and changes that really impacted customers in a way that they couldn't even describe. Not something you'd necessarily write on a comment card when you're checking out, but it taught him a lot about what was really going on in the mind of that customer. Well, that's the kind of technique, who knows my customer? What if I talk to them, not just my customer, what would I learn from that? And so, again, that's part of curiosity is how they look for ways to demonstrate to the customer that they really, really do care. And part of it is how they show them that when they provide feedback, that it really matters. The research shows 95% of companies in the industrialized world asked their customers for feedback, 95% of them, but only 5% of them let the customer know what they did with that feedback. And so, when we get those surveys, it's no wonder that we don't fill them out because we go, “Why should I, it is not going to make any difference.” And so it's learning to tell the customer, you did this, you asked for this, this is what we're doing with it. And so, it tells the customer, you matter, you're important, you're valued. And from that kind of relationship, when you ask them, what's something cool we can do, they can give you creative ideas. Me: There was also a part in a book that you spoke about as it relates to curiosity, where the company got permission from the customers to watch them shower. I found that so interesting. I was like watching them shower. Chip stated exactly. He’s doesn't know who volunteered to do that, but yeah, it's MOEN revolution. And what they did was they wanted to learn how customers experienced a showerhead and what they found from their research by getting customers to say, “Let us watch you in a shower and see what you do and not just invade your privacy.” But they found it about 35% of their customer’s time is spent avoiding the spray. It gave them the insight they needed to design a different kind of spray that they didn't spend so much time avoiding the spray for the shower. Giving a similar example. He works with the major hotel chain would ask customers when they checked in if they were a familiar customer or a frequent customer. They would say, “We'll give you a discount on your room rate, if you'll let us follow you to your room and watch you unpack.” And a customer goes, “What?” But what they really were interested in is they wanted to see how the customer settled into the room. And so what they discovered at that particular time, this is a giant hotel chain. What they discovered is that sometimes customers will bring up their own hairdryer. Well, most of us bring hairdryers. But back then, what you would do is in order to use your hair dryer, you had to unplug the one that was plugged in the wall. They already provided you a hairdryer, but you like yours because it's hot or whatever. Well, nobody complained about the fact that you made me unplug your hairdryer to plug mine in. But there's a little irritant, there's a little negative, or they found that when a couple checked into a hotel, there was only one luggage cradle in the room for them to put their own luggage. So we all know what happens then, he puts his luggage on the floor. Well, there's another little work that's a negative, but nobody ever put that on a comment card. But you add up enough little workarounds like that, you got a negative experience the customer can't even talk about it because it's so subtle. Watching the customer, they go, we could fix this, we could provide another receptacle for their own hairdryer or we could hardwire ours into the wall so the receptacle is available for them to use their own hairdryer or every time a couple checks in, we can have housekeeping bring another luggage cradle to the room, all of these easy fixes. But there are things that the hotel didn't notice or didn't know because they were too subtle for the customer to say anything about it. And we don't notice the things where we live. We quit seeing the wallpaper a long time ago. And so, we take it for granted, we don't see it. And so, we're blind to the details that customer sees. So, again, it's looking for those ways to say, “I want to go deep inside that customer's world and their experience to understand and demonstrate my understanding to that customer so they feel valued.” Important Breakthrough Strategies To Get Into Your Customer’s Imagination When asked about which of the 5 secrets is the most important tactics or strategies in order to get into customer’s imagination, Chips stated curiosity. He thinks it is the foundation, that's what started with it first. Interestingly enough, where these five secrets came from was, he knew the book was going to be about innovation and co-creating with your customers. And so, he looked at organizations that we all know famous for innovation. And we can all think of if you ask anybody, who are the most innovative companies on the internet, most people will talk about Google or Amazon or Pixar, they'll have names like that. If you go in those cultures and you say, “Okay, what are these cultures have in common?” You find their cultures are all about curiosity, they're all about grounding or focus, they're all about risk taking that leads to discovery. They're trust and they're about passion. So those are the five things that are common among cultures. So he thought, what if you took those same five features of an innovative culture and apply them to a relationship, in this case, a relationship with a customer? What would that be like? What would that partnership be like? So that's the basis for those five secrets to breakthrough products, services, solutions. They're fun things to do but part of it is how do you get customers to drink with you? He knows the listeners love tactics that they can use and apply, but sometimes we focus on asking customers only about their needs and expectations when the world of the imagination is around the customer's hopes and aspirations. And he'll give a fun example. He was working with a large pizza delivery company, one world-wide, we all know this pizza company. And he believed when he did started the research that when you talk to lots and lots and lots and lots of customers about this company that they were going to focus on product, price and process, meaning your pizza is not very good or it cost too much or it takes too long to get it to him, pizza price, product and process. But when they asked dreamer questions, they learned a whole different set of things. For example, a dreamer question is where you asked the customer to think beyond what's now present. For example, one question they would say is like, “What’s something no pizza company is doing that would be really cool?” Well, one of the answers they have here in is, “What about the pizza box?” They said, “What?” “The pizza box? You know, I get this delivered pizza, it's got this box and I end up having to throw the box away. What would it be like if you did something with a box?” “Well, like what would you have in mind?” Well, it could be like a color a picture or a puzzle or it can be a mask you could have for kids to wear a mask. They could just cut it out.” And so, sure enough, several years later, he’s working with the paper manufacturer that made pizza boxes for this company and sure enough on the inside lid, they had put puzzles or coloring things for kids or various different things. And they put a sheet of wax paper between the lid and the pizza so it didn't soil the inside of the lid. And it turned, nobody would have thought of that. But they only get those kind of things when you take your customer into the world and you focus, that's what grounding is all about. You focus on new applications, new solutions, and all of a sudden you get a whole different world. Me: That's so true, that's really innovative. And that's a good point because we really do throw the pizza box away so why not find something else to do with it that could be more than just throwing it in the garbage. Chip agreed and shared that the really wise companies get their customers to help them. A good example is Starbucks. Starbucks is a very creative company, but they get customers to help them. For example, things like splash sticks that go in your coffee cup lid, customers came up with that, Starbucks didn't come up. Cake pops that looks like a little lollipop, but it's made out of cake, customers came up with that. Pumpkin spice latte in all the stores, these are all things the customer came up with, company didn't do that. But it means you got to take your customer into an imaginary world with new ideas and new concepts and new applications and help them think with you. And that's why he loves the concept of creation, is you're not making stuff for the customer or on behalf of the customer, you're doing it with the customer. And so, not only do you get their creativity to add to yours and come up with all kind of new stuff, but you're also building the loyalty of that customer, because when they got their fingerprints on what you're creating, they feel a commitment to it and their loyalty goes up. App, Website or Tool that Chip Absolutely Can’t Live Without in His Business When asked about online resource that he can’t live without in his business, Chip stated that he will share two of them. One he can't live without in his personal life is called Sound Hound. And sound hound is a great website because how many times do you go in a store and they're playing music guide, you go in a store and they’re playing a song and you go, what's the name of that song? Sound Hound is an app that allows you to hit that thing and it listens to that song, not only does it tell you the name of the song, but it also gives you the lyrics and if you want to buy it, you can buy it right there. So, for him, it's a great app that he that he uses a lot. And in his business life because he’s a writer and he writes a lot of stuff, lots and lots of articles and blogs and so forth. Grammarly has been a godsend because he doesn't know anything much about the English language from the standpoint of grammar. He doesn't think he did very well on those courses in school. And so, Grammarly is a program that allows you to when you finish writing a blog or an essay or a letter or anything, you can simply put the letter inside Grammarly and it'll bring up and tell you, this is a different way you need to say that or you've got this misspelled or this should be an ‘are’ not an ‘is’. And it'll correct all your grammar or at least tell you what it sees is wrong and give you the choice to correcting it or not. But it also provides you the rationale, so you get to learn a little bit more about what a ‘dangling participle’ or a ‘split infinity’ is. But it's a great tool for him, particularly from a writing standpoint. Books That Have Had the Greatest Impact on Chip When asked about books that have had the biggest impact, Chip shared that the one he remembers that he thought was a powerful book was a book called Watership Down: A Novel. It's an old book by Richard Adams. And it's a favourite book of his because it's basically a fiction story of a group of rabbits that get the feeling that they're down, their warren where they live is in danger. They don't know why, it turns out it's like a construction crew that's come in and build housing development where they live. And so, they have to journey across England to find a new home. There are many, many, many adventures and stories. And it's a great story, they actually made a movie of it. But the use of stories, the use of myths, the use of fables in their interaction is, he thought, one of the most creative uses of how they do that. So, that's one book that's been an inspiration for him. Another one is a book by his friend Seth Godin called Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable. Great book and it's in the marketing category, but it underscores the power of being distinctive, to being different. And he's a very, very creative guy who's written many, many books. But how you will only succeed through your service and product if you find a way to make it unique, different. What he calls value unique, not value added. And that's been his work in the customer experience world. Value added is taking what customers expect and add more. The problem with that is you run out of room because the expectations of the customers go right up with you and so you add more and more and more and more, and pretty soon you’re going to go bankrupt or run out of room. And so it's like, “You're a great customer of ours, we'd like to upgrade you to the first class or if you're a frequent flyer.”, that approach of a linear value added approach to him has limitations. So, his work is all around value unique and it's not looking at generosity, but ingenuity, what can add to that’s unique, that's different, that will surprise the customer in a way they didn't expected. Value added usually that you aren't shocked by the fact that they upgraded you or added more comped your dessert, it doesn't shock you. But if you did something that was totally unique, different, all of a sudden you'd be talking about that. And his belief is that the pinnacle, the height of customer loyalty is when the customer tells great stories about you, not just recommends you, but they say, “You're not going to believe what happened to me.” And they tell a story that's going to have more influence on a prospect than simply a recommendation. And so how do you create the stories? Well, that takes something unique. His wife as a new car and she traded in old car and got a new car. And a week after she had a new car, she turned on the radio for the very first time and discovered they had programmed in her radio stations from her trade in. Ingenuity and she tells everybody about the radio and not about the car. And so, it's little things like that, it's making sure that when you take your car in to be service and you're going to be waiting for it, they've got in your profile and they've got a current machine or, one of those cake cup machines, that your favorite coffee is there available. So when you have to wait on your car to be serviced, you got hazelnut coffee, which is the one you like, it's little things like that that personalize the experience. But it's thinking about it; think about Crackerjacks in the world of service. Crackerjacks is a 100 year old product. And what we loved about Crackerjacks was not the caramelized molasses flavored popcorn, but the free prize, which was actually workless, but emotionally priceless, we knew we were going to get a prize because it said so on the box, but we didn't know exactly what it was going to be. It’s that thinking, that concept applied to the world of experience, to the world of customer service is his world and Seth’s book, The Purple Cow, he thought was a very, very insightful book that was very helpful to him. So those are two he’d recommend. What Chip is Really Excited About Now! Chip shared that he and his wife are on the board of the Georgia Writer's Museum, he lives in the state of Georgia and they have a writer’s museum that celebrates famous writers that live in the state, many of whom have all passed on, people like Jimmy Carter and Martin Luther King and folks like that. And he’s on the board of that museum and so he gets to serve as sort of the museum curator to design new exhibits. And so, that's a fun thing for him to do. The other thing in terms of his work is he stumbled onto a new concept called anticipatory innovation. And so now he’s developing a whole new body of work around anticipatory innovation. And what that is, he gave an example and then he’ll come back and describe it. When he and his wife stayed in a Hampton Inn, they provide you a coffee pot and they provide you paper cups. Now, if you happen to be in a situation where you and your significant other both fix your coffee the same way. And you fixed a cup in the room and they got the paper cups in the room for years, invariably you're going to run into a situation where you go, “Is this my cup or yours?”And so, what they did is they put on the front of the cup, on one cup they put lips like somebody put lipstick on and kissed it. And on the other one they put a mustache and so it's very clever, but it fixes a situation that you encounter they go, “Oh, I know this one's mine because it's got the lips on it or it's got the mustache on it.” But it's that you anticipate you're going to encounter. Another example, Tampa Airport, the rental car where they put all the rental cars is inside the parking deck. The first thing you do when you get inside a rental car is you going to set your GPS. The problem is there's no internet inside that structure. So, what did they do? As soon as you exit the parking deck, there is a GPS, pull over and little parking slot you can pull in that does have does have Wi-Fi internet so you can set your GPS before you actually leave the parking lot. But they thought about that, they thought ahead and say, “What’s a little problem or challenge or hiccup that the customer may encounter that we can anticipate and provide an easy fix before they get to that hiccup?” And so, that’s a whole new world, he calls it anticipatory innovation and there’s not much research done about it, nobody has written much about it, he has written recently an article for Forbes that’s called, Are You Using a “Boy” or “Girl” Cup?. But it’s little things like that that now is a whole world he’s researching and trying to create a whole new body of work around. In his business life, that’s what he’s working on. How do you set yourself apart by impressing your clients? Hopefully, it is something that can land you bigger and better jobs. If you can be remarkable, you’ll find yourself with bigger jobs than you thought possible. Key Takeaways You don’t need to be an expert in everything. Asking for help, building systems, and seeking out the expertise of others is essential for your business to thrive. Build a team if you can. Outsource when needed. True success is a collaborative effort. Going out of your way to find opportunities to be excellent and unanticipated will set you apart. Being remarkable means doing more than what others expect from you. Going out of your way to build these positive relationships will result in a massive return on your time and effort. About Patrick Moreau and Rebecca Rapple Today, I’m joined by my friends at Muse Storytelling, founder Patrick Moreau and CEO Rebecca Rapple. Their mission is to create well-told stories that lead to positive change. Using the science of storytelling, Muse has told the stories of a diverse collection of brands including Fujifilm and Four Seasons. Getting the Support You Need to Succeed Success rarely occurs without help. Rebecca and Patrick know first-hand that one person can seldom do it all themself. Getting outside help and new perspectives will help move the needle of any business forward. It takes courage to admit that you don’t have all the answers, but the alternative isn’t worth the risk. Being Remarkable in Order to Succeed Success hinges on being noticed and remembered. In other words, you need to be remarkable. Rebecca and Patrick strive to do just that in their business. You may not feel that you are remarkable, but you are. We all are. Storytelling has the power to showcase your remarkability. If you can seize the moment, take a chance, and tell an unforgettable story, you will make your mark. Once you identify what makes you excellent, find ways to automate it. That frees you up to find ways to do the unexpected. You’ll have extra time and energy to go above and beyond and impress your clients in ways they never expected. In other words, identify opportunities for your business to make money so you can get the things that you want.” [6:49] “Being remarkable literally means being worthy of remark. It has to be special enough that someone would actually comment on it proactively. It’s the intersection between being excellent and being unexpected.” [21:29] “There’s just a couple inflection points; moments when we chose to do something remarkable. We went out of our way and it changed everything.” [24:09] “When you have excellence dialed in - when you already know how to do it and it’s a given - it frees you up to use all your brainpower and extra time to really focus on what you can do to be unexpected.” [27:34] “It’s harder now, but that means that it’s more important than ever that you focus on your business. You must really look at how you can be remarkable because if you don’t stand out, you are absolutely going to drown in a sea of supply.” [44:57] Links: Find Patrick and Rebecca online Sign up for the free Studio Sherpas Webclass Take Muse’s Free Course Additional Links: Check out the full show notes page Do you have something to share on this podcast? As a freshman at UNM, Bill founded his second company, ProLaw Software. Under Bill’s leadership as President and CEO, ProLaw achieved an average compound annual growth rate of 78% during the last 5 years as an independent company. ProLaw appeared on the Inc. 500 ranking of the fastest growing companies in the country three years in a row. In 2001, Bill and his team sold ProLaw to West Group, the foremost provider of integrated information solutions to the legal market and a division of what is now Thomson Reuters. Thomson Reuters built a 64,000 sf building for the ProLaw division on Masthead St. in the Jefferson corridor. During Bill’s tenure, ProLaw created 160 jobs almost entirely in Albuquerque, and the division’s primary focus of operations continues to be Albuquerque. During his tenure at West, Bill served on the executive committee, during which time he completed the Thomson School of General Management. Bill created the West km business unit, which combines ProLaw technology with West content to create legal-specific knowledge management solutions. For his accomplishments in the creation of the West km business, Bill was co-recipient of Thomson Legal & Regulatory’s President’s Award for innovation. Bill was on the executive team which completed the acquisition of Elite Information Group, a former competitor to ProLaw Software, and led the product strategy team during the integration transition which combined Elite and ProLaw to create the Thomson Elite business unit. Bill continued in a consulting role with the Thomson Corporation as Chief Strategist, Practice Management Products until 2004. Joining the founding team at Verge was Bill’s route to return to startups. Bill focuses on helping founding teams build successful companies. Bill is on the founding team and Chairman at boomtime, SportXast and attachedapps, and on the board of Nuvita, Nuvita Pro and Slipstream, all Verge II.5 portfolio companies. How do you market something when you don’t know what it is, or who it’s for? If you’re anything like me, you feel driven to create, but it’s only through the process of creation that your vision takes form. It’s only through putting that creation out into the world that you begin to realize what it means. This makes it a challenge to market your creations. If you don’t know what it is, you don’t know how to sell it. If you don’t know who it’s for, you don’t know how to speak to those people. I’m honored to have the legendary Seth Godin back on the show. His first appearance was exactly one-hundred episodes ago, on episode 77. My first conversation with Seth proved to be a breakthrough moment for me. The things Seth said to me gave me the courage to self publish The Heart to Start, as well as other, shorter books. I’m still digesting this conversation, but I think it will prove to be another breakthrough. It helped me answer a lot of questions I had from reading Seth’s most recent book, the instant classic, This is Marketing. In this conversation, you’ll learn: What are “status roles,” and how can you use them to help your product spread? Seth will tell you why status is more than just money and materialism. Why is “specific” a kind of bravery? If you don’t know “who it’s for,” you might simply be hiding from a fear of failure. Seth calls me out with very direct advice that will stick with me for the rest of my life. Find out why Seth doesn’t want me to sell out to easy money. Whenever I do reviews with any of the guys in my team, that review always ends with me trying to drag feedback out of them for things that I could do differently and blind spots that I may have, or things that I may be doing that for them personally isn't the most motivating. – Carl Blundon Welcome to the show everybody! Today's topic is Managing Different Generations. I have a great guest with us today who's the Outsourcing Director for Adecco Taiwan, Carl Blundon. In this episode we talk about his journey, generation gaps, what he looks for in a team member, customizing feedback, seeking feedback from your team and a lot more. Click that play button to listen, and don't forget to rate us on iTunes! Investing in Your People's Growth My two years in that role were incredibly successful from a financial perspective. We had 32% top line growth the first year, 16% following up on that the second year, so it was really good. I think the biggest mistake or failure that I had was that a lot of that growth was coming from my own sales. I was still spending too much time out, selling on my own and contributing too much on my own, rather than investing that time into the development and the success of the people that I had working for me. I was taking them with me; in my eyes, I was showing them the ropes but I was still doing it myself. When you look at those numbers – 32% and 16% - they look great. But had I spent more time investing in their development that first year, maybe that 32% might have been 24 % or 25%, but the second year when we were all working in similar levels of efficiency, maybe that 16% that second year is also up around 30% or 32% or 35%. Because you're not depending on your own ability. You've brought the people in your team up to a similar level and you can reap the rewards for it. Managing Different Generations I think it's a little bit overblown. I think people make a little bit too much out of the generation gap. In the end, we're not the same as our parents were; we don't have the same aspirations that your typical baby boomer might have had. I don't think it's really fair to expect that out of younger people, no matter what generation they're coming in from. No matter if you're managing someone who's older than you or younger than you, you have to sit down and figure out what motivates that person, what they want and to really understand them in order to get the best out of them. Giving Feedback For me, I don't think you can have a one-size-fits-all approach when you're giving feedback to people in your team. I have people in my team that are older than me, that are more senior and have been in the company longer than me. I'm not necessarily going to go in and deliver that feedback in exactly the same way and words that I would deliver it to a 22-year-old. You can want and expect people to take feedback, but you also have to give it in a customized way. You need to understand your people's personalities and understand what type of feedback and setting and tone is going to allow them to react positively. Are you planning out your 2019 year? If you are in the throes of planning goals and the path to achieve those goals think about this…You can 10x your success if you do this one thing. Make a personal intention of creating your personal brand. Don’t worry-if you are thinking “I have no idea how to do that-you are not alone!” Today we are going on a personal journey together, using Roz Usheroff book “The Future of You: Creating Your Enduring Brand” as the blueprint. Before we embark on this project-remember we are striving for progress-so that when we look back we can think-yes! I did that! Don’t worry you got this. Conduct Your Own Personal Market Research. For marketers familiar with focus groups-understanding habits, experiences and perceptions directly impacts the way brands plan strategies. It is no different for our personal branding-we need to first know where we are to go forward. This is the hardest part of the process-don’t let it stop you. Survey what you think is your perceived personal brand and then compare it against what the truth is. Roz says something so true “Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it!” Remember – knowledge is power. Harness what others think and if you don’t feel the feedback is aligned with your own perception the good news is that we all have the chance to course correct any time we choose to do so. Create Your Personal Mission Statement Just like a company who has a mission statement-yours will help remind yourself and express to colleagues, leaders, and your boss-this is what I aspire to be. Roz identifies that “The mission statement helps you identify and articulate your beliefs and core values”. Here are her tips to develop your mission statement: “Who? Describe yourself…talents, gifts, and attributes” “What? Outline your goals for the use of those talents” “How? Describe the outcome, including the impact that you want to make and the impression you want to leave behind”. Find Ways to be Memorable For introverts-and I feel you-as an extroverted introvert-the thought of putting yourself “out there” can feel overwhelming. But remember whether you intentionally or unintentionally want to express your personal brand-you are and will be expressing it…so why not create your personal brand the way You Want to Be Remembered? Roz shares a quote from Seth Godin “Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable”. If you don’t know that book, I will have a link in the show notes-everyone needs to stand out like a purple cow! Roz reminds us that “your personal brand is ‘the sum of every experience others have of you’”. Think about how others experience you-if you are a marketer-do you pitch your idea for product promotion? How was that experience for you-and more importantly how was it for your team, the target audience, your boss? Did you make an impression and rock the meeting? If people came up to you afterwards asking you for advice-you know that you made an impact. Ready to take your memorability to the next level? It is so important to be visible. Recently, I had someone suggest it is important to network across divisions. If you work in a large corporation and the headquarters are not in your location or if the company you work in is very large-what steps do you do daily weekly to gain visibility. Roz shares many examples of people getting passed over for promotions even though they surpassed financial goals and expectations. This is at the core of why having a strong personal brand is so important. Don’t shy away from raising your hand to be seen-volunteer for opportunities that stretch your comfort zone and may not directly relate to your job. Ask yourself throughout the process-do people seek out my advice? If yes then your visibility is memorable-double bonus points! One of my favorite questions Roz suggests you ask others to help establish your personal brand is “If you were going to open up your own company, what position would you offer me and why?” and then follow up with “What qualities do I possess that make you see me in that position?” You may be wondering, even after you receive their feedback-whether it is the right stuff to make you stand out, be both visible and memorable. Here Roz offers an important lesson about finding your unique ability. Often, we overlook our unique ability because it comes “easy to us”. Do you think if something is too easy-it cannot be enough to make you stand out and be memorable? Quite the opposite is true. Consider finding what makes you unique by examining talents you have right now that which people ask you about the most. Think about colleagues and co-workers who seek you out for help on projects. Do you have a pattern of something that comes up over and over again? Create that as your enduring differentiator and expand on it. For example-personally I am passionate about helping empower women. When I attend a conference or an event and see familiar faces, I am often approached and asked to grab coffee and help provide career insights. In fact, this is the reason I started Rock Your Trade show and yet—I often overlook this unique ability because it is something in my DNA-I enjoy serving others and helping comes naturally. I could overlook this or leverage it to create something that stands out. Now think about a similar scenario for yourself…anything come to mind? Use the first thing that pops up as the starting point to truly create something that will help you stand out. And if you really want to take being memorable-and increase your visibility even more-try adding in servant leadership. Why? Because when we offer others our help with no expectation in return it will draw people unexpectedly towards your unique ability. Roz highlights the key qualities of a servant leader “listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, growth, and building community”. We don’t have to use every single one of these to be a servant leader, but you should try to use at least 3 of these qualities on a regular basis and discover the rewards of helping others. We have up to now focused on learning about ourselves, what makes us unique and how we can be memorable and visible. Now what? It is time to become our own PR agency. This doesn’t mean to brag about our accomplishments-which is often why many of us do the opposite and hide behind them. In fact-many of us grew up with the notion that it is somehow “bad" to talk about a goal we achieved and so we should not acknowledge it. How many of us have said when asked about reaching a milestone as “it was nothing”? This doesn’t serve you in your career. So how do we achieve recognition without seeming to brag about it? Roz points to changing our definition of PR to be “the means by which you can share how your unique ability can assist those you seek to serve in terms of getting them to where they want to go.” This is where servant leadership can really help you to highlight your success. How have you helped a colleague, leader, volunteer, client, mentor or even sponsor shine? When you take an interest in helping someone else, there is gratitude expressed by the recipient and they are happy to share appreciate for your help. Several years ago, I took a course called Courageous Confidence by Chalene Johnson. One of the key things I learned was to keep a confidence file-whereby others who had shared their positive thoughts about something I did could be used to help me whenever I had doubts about an ability. Your unique ability is something others really value-and sharing how it has helped others will help you to have the courage to keep using it. Still unsure where to go for inspiration-think about LinkedIn. It is the perfect platform to recommend a colleague-not just click on the recommend a skill but really write a recommendation. In turn, by helping others you will find that there is a reciprocal effect whereby colleagues and professional acquaintances are happy to take the light you shined on them and shine it back. As Roz calls this “…true PR and personal branding is one of drawing attention to what others can achieve with your help and expertise.” By helping others achieve success you will “become indispensable” and your personal brand will reflect who you truly are. Now that we have taken these 4 keys steps-it is time to take action. After all, a plan without execution remains only a dream. The last step-for you to truly make your brand known is to network. For some of us, networking comes easier than to others. Remember-it wasn’t always easy, like any skill it takes practice! You have your mission statement, and all the tools in your personal branding kit, it is time to create your elevator pitch. I highly encourage you to listen to two episodes focused on elevator pitches-Episode 08 with Robyn Sayles-how to share your personal brand in 9 seconds and Episode 13 with Tara Lynn Foster-How Marketers Can Discover What Makes You Great. Both will help you create your elevator pitch. Identify where you can share your story-at networking events, industry events, as a speaker and even guest commentator on a blog or industry publication. Visibility to who you are will help perpetuate your brand. As a final note about this book and Roz Usheroff, she is truly someone who exemplifies her personal brand. I have had the honor of knowing her, speaking with her on a panel and she was a guest on this show. One of the things she says in the closing of her emails is “Always Be Amazing”. Her uplifting spirit and incredible dedication to serving others is an inspiration for all of us! At the beginning of this episode I said there would be a challenge at the end. So here it is-create your personal brand-your mission statement and elevator pitch and share it with me. I will be honored to feature them here and in the Rock Your Trade Show LinkedIn group. And for your courage- you will be entered to win in our Exhibitus drawing for a full registration pass to ExhibitorLive 2019. So don’t delay, include your personal brand as part of your goals for 2019. As always, if I can help you in anyway as you start this journey, reach out to me at rockyourtradeshow.com/let’stalk I love hearing from you! What if I told you there is a straightforward, five-step process that will have you earning over $100K a year with real estate? The average agent makes a mere $44K each year, simply because they are not implementing each of these five crucial elements on a consistent basis. I have invited Kurz Team frontrunners Ramon Lopez and Dustin Fealy to join me in walking through the five steps to earning six figures in real estate, beginning with exposure. Ramon and Dustin share how they set themselves apart through social media and networking, and we discuss the value of designing an integrated marketing campaign. Then we talk lead generation, explaining the advantage of warm leads over cold ones sent our way by Zillow or Facebook. Next, we cover relationship-building, sharing techniques for building rapport on the phone, answering questions with questions to understand client needs, and conveying energy and sincerity to land an appointment. I address the many different forms of ‘closing a deal,' from getting an email address to earning an appointment to selling a home. Listen in to understand the value of client referrals and get inspired to commit to consistency—and easily earn $100K per year in the real estate business! Michael Roderick went from high school English teacher to a Broadway producer in under two years. How did he do it so darn quick? Michael says it’s due to the connections he’s built. Michael explains that going to networking events is so cringe-worthy because you often get bombarded by people trying to promote their stuff and who, frankly, have the whole ‘building meaningful relationships’ thing all wrong. How can you avoid being like one of those people and how can you break into an industry where you know no one? Michael shares his tips! Key Insights & Aha Moments: *You want to grab a pen and paper for this podcast episode and listen to it twice! *How did Michael go from an English teacher to a Broadway producer in under two years? *The first year of teaching completely destroyed Michael. He had to break up a ton of fights and got things thrown at him. *How can you make a good connection with someone at a networking event without being too ‘networky’ about it? *So, why did Michael leave his career as a Broadway producer and how did he get to ‘here’? *Where does Michael’s very strategic thinking come from? How does he have so much wisdom?! *How do you break into an industry when you know nobody? *Michael has 4 networking archetypes: The sharks, the dolphins, those who are drowning, and the lifeguards. *How can you approach and build a relationship with a stranger? Let’s do a quick recap. *Michael explains his GATE strategy, which stands for Give, Ask, Thank, and Experiment. *Very, very rarely does someone say a proper ‘thank you’ to someone. *Formulas are great for marketing but awful for real-life implementation. It’s easy to consume 3 tips, but following those 3 tips to the letter will not give them the same results. *If you’re not being you, people will see it and they will not be able to build trust with you. Check the podcast archives on the blog at JackieUlmer.com for previous episodes if you missed any or are new to the show. Great Customer Service and Being Remarkable in Direct Sales Have you paid attention to what is going on in the World of Network Marketing with companies such as Vemma and Herbalife? Nothing against those companies, but the FTC has been scrutinizing companies more closely, and specifically the number of customers vs business builders - those who are part of the compensation plan. So, you want to pay attention and make sure you have a solid number of regular retail customers, as well as those who are specifically building the business. A great way to develop that customer base is with your Hot Market - those closest to you who will try the product, and become a regular user, and share a testimonial. And, if they don’t like it, you assure them you won’t bug them again. You can either have them buy and try, or give a sample, but often, samples are not enough to really provide a good showing of how it works, or its effectiveness. Then, set up a solid customer care program. Send a thank you card - yes, a hand written card. Send birthday cards, and Thanksgiving cards. Don’t bog your well intended message with something promotional about your business. Send a follow up postcard later, for instance, to offer a discount in their birthday month. Have a new product release? Your customer base is the best place to start to share these new products with a sample. Always best to start with those who already love your products. If your company offers samples, that’s great, and if they don’t get creative in making your own. Go to craft stores to get zip lock bags and screw top sample containers. When you provide great customer value and service, you won’t find it hard to get referrals and repeat orders! You can learn more about my new why and vision at the http://100WealthyWomen.com project! 8 Powerful Strategies for Remarkable Conversations by Paul Axtell Interview by Chicke Fitzgerald of the Game Changer Network as a part of the Best of the Game Changer series, showcased on C-Suite Network Meetings have become a pain point for millions. Many see them as useless sessions that take time away from meaningful tasks. But one consultant with more than 30 years of experience has a different perspective: that meetings matter and they can be mastered. In Meetings Matter, Paul Axtell emphasizes the importance of meetings, and he redesigns them using the vital foundation of conversation. Paul provides consulting and personal effectiveness training to a wide variety of clients, from Fortune 500 companies and universities to nonprofit organizations and government agencies. A large focus of his work is how to run effective and productive meetings: to turn them from the calendar items that so many dread into useful, productive sessions with measurable results. With real-life examples and actionable advice, he shows you how to design meetings for results, lead them to achieve agendas that move projects forward, and even allow time to build the relationships that make working together in a remarkable way possible. This book will revolutionize the meeting, moving it from that dreaded obligation to the most powerful way to get things done in business and in life. Meetings are at the heart of effective organizations. Each meeting is an opportunity to clarify issues, set direction, sharpen focus, create alignment and move ambitions forward. We have to change the way we think about meetings, the way we design and lead them, and, most importantly, how we manage what happens between meetings. Axtell offers eight powerful strategies for fixing our meeting problems, and within each strategy, he provides concrete advice you can put into action immediately such as limiting participants, being vigilant about what gets on the agenda, designing the conversation for each agenda item, and managing the experience for everyone in the room so people leave feeling heard and appreciated. Further, he explains how meetings can be your primary way to create and maintain your network of relationships. We go to meetings. A lot of them. So let's put creating and building relationships in front of us as one of the desired outcomes. What would you do differently if you looked at each meeting as an opportunity to add to your network? Paul has an engineering degree from South Dakota School of Mines and an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis. He has ten years of engineering manufacturing experience and fifteen years of experience in corporate personnel and training. The last twenty years have been devoted to designing and leading programs that enhance individual and group performance within large organizations. He is the author of Ten Powerful Things to Say to Your Kids: Creating the Relationship You Want with the Most Important People in Your Life, which applies the concepts of his work to the special relationships between parents and children of all ages. Thus far, it has been translated into Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, French and Spanish. He is also the author of Being Remarkable, a small but power-packed collection of action items gleaned from more than thirty years of coaching people toward greater personal effectiveness aimed at developing the awareness that is the beginning of true and lasting change. The Game Changer is featured on C-Suite Network. Chicke is a philanthropreneur • she zigs where others zag, creating value, growth and bringing to life crazy good ideas that will leave a legacy
Site: http://www.audiobooks.com/podcast | Email: podcast@audiobooks.com Welcome back to the Audiobooks.com podcast! This episode of the podcast was released on September 1, 2015 and, as such, we take a look at the season, the challenges and excitements of the upcoming months, and what we look forward to most! (Pumpkin latte, anyone? Not yet? Ok.) Once again, Addy and Brian chose to review very complementary audiobooks in the business and personal development genre. Addy reviews Do the Work by Steven Pressfield, while Brian reviews Purple Cow by Seth Godin. News Girl on the Train is being made into a movie! (Note: this is not the 2013 thriller starring Henry Ian Cusick.) The psychological thriller published in January by author Paula Hawkins was optioned by DreamWorks and is already getting some buzz over the casting of the characters. One major change already rumored in the course of the book's adaptation is that the film will likely take place in upstate New York, as opposed to the English backdrop of the story. As this change does not seem to cause the author to lose sleep, it shall be interesting to see what The Help's Tate Taylor will do with the film. The audiobook for Girl on the Train is narrated by Clare Corbett and Louise Brealey and is 11 hours long. The penultimate book in the Lorien Legacies series, The Fate of Ten, is scheduled for release September 1, 2015. The first book of the series, I Am Number Four, was released back in 2010 and subsequently had a film adapted in its honor, starring Alex Pettyfer and Timothy Olyphant. Neither the box office numbers nor the critical response of the film were anything to get excited over and the sequel was shelved. The six books thus far in the Lorien Legacies series have one narrator in common, Neil Kaplan, but use an array of narrators for different voices. Each book hovers around the 10 hour mark. Audiobook Reviews Often called a manifesto, Steven Pressfield's Do The Work is an action guide that helps readers address points of resistance along the road to the completion of a project. Interestingly, the foreword is written by the author of the book that Brian listened to, Seth Godin, and in it he writes: "It will help you understand why you're stuck; it will kick you in the pants, and it will get you moving." The book was originally published in April of 2011 is a follow up to Pressfield's 2002 non-fiction book The War of Art (not to be confused with The Art of War by Sun Tzu, which Brian reviewed last week). Both books address the enemy of creativity and how to empower oneself to rise above the fear often accompanied by participating in a world where criticism and roadblocks abound. Whether you're a creative type or an entrepreneur, this book can bring you step by step through the process of overcoming that fear and resistance in order to produce your desired result. And Pressfield does it all in 1 hour and 26 minutes! Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin follows a very similar vein, but is pleasantly complementary to Do The Work. The 2003 book is 3 hours in length and, like Do the Work, is also narrated by its author. The phrase purple cow comes from a 1895 poem by Gelett Burgess: I never saw a Purple Cow, I never hope to see one; But I can tell you, anyhow, I'd rather see than be one. The short, quippy poem became popular very quickly and Burgess actually came to regret writing it. He wrote a follow up poem in 1897, the last line of which reads: "I'll Kill you if you Quote it!" Most authors would kill for that kind of popularity, not kill because of the popularity. Despite the author's backtracking, the poem has a unique nuance in modern culture. It can be read as embracing the idea of sticking to the status quo because sticking out is harder than fitting in, but Godin takes a different approach. Godin embraces the heart of this poem by pointing out that, as a society, we are saturated in choices that have few differences. The status quo, the traditional marketing techniques, no longer cut it in our fast-paced, mostly-online culture, and this idea of putting a purple cow into everything you do embraces the idea of being different. In one interview, Godin says: "Purple Cow is about the inexorable decline in the effectiveness of advertising and what to do about it." It's not effective to be status quo; don't see the purple cow, be the purple cow! Start with Pressfield's book, learn to overcome the fears that hold you back from achieving your dreams, then read Godin's book to discover how being the purple cow of your industry will produce the type of results you're looking for! Then report back and tell us how you did! Show us some love!
