Malcolm Gladwell is an outlier in his own right, as a journalist, author and public speaker. His unique perspective and engaging writing style have made him a prominent sociology and popular culture voice. He has five New York Times bestsellers — The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, What the Dog Saw, and David and Goliath. In addition to his best-selling books, Malcolm co-founded Pushkin Industries and hosted the hit podcast Revisionist History.  Malcolm shares his journey and offers many insights and lessons on what it takes to stand for and stand out in today's world.  I then bring back an interview with Alan Depencier, CMO from RBC, which is even more relevant today. Malcolm Gladwell is part of a series titled Legends Journey: Lessons in Leadership, which I am co-producing with the Toronto Chapter of the American Marketing Association. We celebrate the journeys of those who have been inducted into Canada's Marketing Hall of Legends. This week on Saturday Night Jive we watched Old Dogs a confounding film from 2009 starring SNL hosts Robin Williams and John Travolta as well as Matt Dillon, I realize I'm just clinging to the fact that our podcast is tangentially SNL related anymore but we'll get back to the show next week when we watch John Travolta host the show.  But first, Old Dogs.  How to describe this movie?  It's like The Cat In The Hat on steroids.  Nothing makes any logical sense and then you're at boy scout camp playing prison rules ultimate frisbee with Justin Long.  Then before you know it you're being controlled by master puppeteer Bernie Mac.  Then you may have facial paralysis and eat a dead lady's pie.  That's basically the plot of Old Dogs.  All this plus an eternal question about John Travolta's balls.  Enjoy!Full archive of all podcast episodes available at saturdaynightjive.blogspot.comEmail us anything at saturdaynightjivepodcast@gmail.comDownload Here

When Dani Reiss took over his grandfather's apparel business more than two decades ago, he gambled on Canada. He resolved to continue making high-end outerwear in Canada, at a time when others in the industry were moving production abroad. The bet paid off. Today Canada Goose is recognized around the world for its luxury clothing. Reiss credits part of that success to the decision to stick with a “Made in Canada” label. For international customers, he says, “a Canada Goose jacket made in Canada was like a Swiss Watch made in Switzerland. It's a quintessential Canadian product when the place of manufacturing cannot be separated from the product itself.”In conversation with Goldy Hyder on the Speaking of Business podcast, Reiss urges other Canadian businesses to “leverage the power of the Canadian brand.” He also reflects on being named to AMA Toronto's Canada's Marketing Hall of Legends, which honours business excellence within the marketing profession.

But there is a pattern to who succeeds and who doesn’t. And engaging in the consistent practice of its pursuit is the best way forward. Based on the breakthrough Akimbo workshop pioneered by legendary author Seth Godin, The Practice will help you get unstuck and find the courage to make and share creative work. Godin insists that writer’s block is a myth, that consistency is far more important than authenticity, and that experiencing the imposter syndrome is a sign that you’re a well-adjusted human. Most of all, he shows you what it takes to turn your passion from a private distraction to a productive contribution, the one you’ve been seeking to share all along. With this book as your guide, you’ll learn to dance with your fear. To take the risks worth taking. And to embrace the empathy required to make work that contributes with authenticity and joy. Build a practice of your work, and practice it everyday with the mindset of a professional. Practice it even when you don’t know what the result will be. Success or good results are not guaranteed but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work towards it on a daily basis. We need to show up.  Seth doesn’t believe in writer’s block. He believes that inspiration doesn’t show up unless we do. We have to turn up professionally, take things seriously on a daily basis, and that momentum and practice will avoid us feeling stuck. We need to start with a problem that we need to solve and then find out what the answer is. Without having an assertion or point of view we won’t do anything.  By putting creative work out on a schedule, things like writer’s block don’t have time to exist, because we are showing up. BIG IDEA 2 (8:16) – Don’t be a hack. It’s not just about empathy or deeply knowing your customer but knowing WHO you’re even aiming to create value for. Because if you aim for the masses, you lose your point of view, your authenticity and quickly become a hack. So you need to know what market you’re in. You need to have a voice. You need to constantly ask who it is you’re creating for, and what will help your work become more appropriate for your audience. Don’t be a hack, know who you’re talking to and don’t worry about the rest.  BIG IDEA 3 (10:24) – Be generous. Worry less about what other people think. Many of us allow our output or work to define us, meaning that any criticism of our work becomes a criticism of us personally. We need to become like lifeguards, they are not worried about what others think or say or worry about imposter syndrome when they jump into the ocean to save someone. They just do the work they need to do and do it in a generous way. It is also about not hiding yourself because you will miss the opportunity to be generous. We need to embrace discomfort, show up and do the difficult work. Just put yourself out there so others can benefit.   LINKS Also listen to Whatcha Gonna do With That Duck: Just keep shippin’ Seth on Tim Ferriss talking about The Practice https://tim.blog/2020/10/26/seth-godin-the-practice/  Seth on Tim Ferriss talking about how how he manages his life, rules, principles and obsessions: https://tim.blog/2016/02/10/seth-godin/    Music By: Is It Hip Hop by LightBeats Let’s Connect LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/steph-clarke Instagram: @stephsbizbookshelf Enjoying the show? “What it means to have a practice is that you show up tomorrow even if it didn’t work today.”That is what Seth Godin, entrepreneur, best-selling author, guru, and marketing hall of famer, has to say about The Practice, his methodology on finding your true voice. The Practice is not about making art, writing a book, or working as a manager. It is about being an artist, a writer, and a leader. What is it that separates those who have creative hobbies and those who fully embrace their creativity? It is the work and not the outcome. It is finding and listening to the uninhibited inner genius. It is being generous and it is moving forward without guarantees. And it is about giving yourself the grace and forgiveness to be unsure, to feel like an imposter, and to fail. Because once you start The Practice, it doesn’t become easier, it becomes normal. About the Guest:Seth Godin is an author, entrepreneur and most of all, a teacher. In addition to launching one of the most popular blogs in the world, he has written 19 best-selling books, including The Dip, Linchpin, Purple Cow, Tribes, and What To Do When It's Your Turn (And It's Always Your Turn). By focusing on everything from effective marketing and leadership, to the spread of ideas and change, Seth has been able to motivate and inspire countless people around the world. In 2013, Seth was one of just three professionals inducted into the Direct Marketing Hall of Fame. In an astonishing turn of events, in May 2018, he was inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame as well. He might be the only person in both.About The Practice:Seth Godin’s new book launches today, November 3rd, 2020.This elegant little book will inspire artists, writers, and entrepreneurs to stretch and commit to putting their best work out into the world. Creative work doesn't come with a guarantee. But there is a pattern to who succeeds and who doesn't. And engaging in the consistent practice of its pursuit is the best way forward. The Practice will help you get unstuck and find the courage to make and share creative work. Godin insists that writer's block is a myth, that consistency is far more important than authenticity, and that experiencing the imposter syndrome is a sign that you're a well-adjusted human. Most of all, he shows you what it takes to turn your passion from a private distraction to a productive contribution, the one you've been seeking to share all along. With this book as your guide, you'll learn to dance with your fear. To take the risks worth taking. And to embrace the empathy required to make work that contributes with authenticity and joy.Finding Seth Godin: Buy his book: The PracticeWebsite: https://www.sethgodin.com/ Blog: https://seths.blog/ Twitter: @ThisIsSethsBlog Listen to his podcast: Akimbo: A Podcast from Seth GodinCheck out his Akimbo Workshops: https://www.akimbo.com/ To inquire about my coaching program opportunity visit https://mentorship.heathermonahan.com/ Review this podcast on Apple Podcast using this

The Coronavirus has presented Canadian businesses with unprecedented challenges. There is no compass for these uncharted waters. New approaches to customer, supplier and employee engagement require consideration and businesses underlying “operating systems” need to be updated and re-written. In this episode, Tony Chapman a luminary of Canada’ Marketing Hall of Legends (2008) discusses these challenges with two fellow CMHOL Legend inductees, David Kincaid (2013) and Ken Wong (2006). Together they explore effective leadership through adversity and possible solutions Canadian businesses, in particular small businesses, need to consider as they manage through these uncertain times. Organizational culture during Coronavirus (03:18) During these unprecedented times, organizations are afforded an opportunity to step back and reappraise their cultures. David shares his points of view on culture as a driver for business transformation - “..culture acts as an enabler to creating competitive advantage.” Recovery - big box vs small business (06:52) Ken believes price will be the key lever for large enterprises in their recovery strategies. However, small to medium businesses can’t compete on this basis and need to find what’s in their wheelhouse. During this time it will be clear which businesses have true relationships with their customers. CEO’s challenges (09:21) CEO’s are facing numerous challenges in this environment. Maintaining profit, managing costs, narrowing their focus on what matters most, and doing enough to preserve today so when the times come they can rebuild. Ken and David share their insights and advise to CEO’s - take the time to plan & widen your focus. Advice for small/medium business (13:45) Truly understand what business you are in and identify what problem you will solve for your customers. Engaging with suppliers, key customers and local business associations to be part of the conversation is also key to addressing these challenges. David highlights the potential impact of e-commerce could have on small business. Advice to leaders (18:54) During these trying and uncertain times, what level of transparency is required from leaders? The panel provides their guidance highlighting the need to engage frontline staff - as they influence customer satisfaction - and engaging with team members at all levels to understand how things have changed and how this has impacted customers motivations. Getting your house in order (22:23) Creating a safe environment for consumers through rigours sanitation protocols and communicating this to your consumers is critical to establishing trust with your consumers. Communicate, communicate, communicate! Closing (25:21) Tony Chapman shares his insights and learnings: - Know what business you’re actually in, where you add value and why you matter. - Understanding what lane you are in - focus on the things you can stand for - Communication and transparency is critical when you're dealing with customers, employees and suppliers - we’re all in this together   Links and References Ken Wong - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ken-wong-4453892 David Kincaid - https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-kincaid-125b851 CMHOL - https://www.amamarketinghalloflegends.ca AMA Toronto - https://www.ama-toronto.com/ Zellers - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zellers Galen Weston - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galen_Weston Loblaws - https://www.loblaws.ca Harvard Business Review - https://hbr.org Costco - https://www.costco.ca Tom Peters - https://tompeters.com Follow Tony Chapman Website - https://tonychapmanreactions.com Twitter - https://twitter.com/TonyChapman Linkedin - https://www.linkedin.com/in/tonychapmanreactions/   About Canada’s Marketing Hall of Legends (CMHOL) Founded in 2004, Canada’s Marketing Hall of Legends honours Canadians who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of excellence in the field of marketing. With such an enormous body of work, it was hard to know where to start preparing for this interview, but I spent our 45 minutes together trying to shine a light on apparently conflicting beliefs. How do we strive for more, while also accepting who we are? Does having a Plan B mean that we don’t go all in on Plan A? Does hiring for culture fit mean that we destroy creativity? We explored questions like these that transcend both life and business, so strap yourself in for some rapid-fire learning with the one, the only, Seth Godin. Topics Discussed: Striving for more versus acceptance of self Having a Plan B versus going all in on Plan A Navigating uncertainty Overcoming rejection and adversity Build an MVP or build something remarkable? How to identify your smallest viable market How to save time for rewarding pursuits Persist or quit in the face of negative feedback? Hire for culture fit or diversity of thought? Does setting up shop in Silicon Valley kill creativity? Why Netflix and Apple don’t make good benchmarks for early-stage entrepreneurs Kevin Kelly’s 1,000 true fans The K12 school system and what’s broken with education Signaling: good signal v bad signal? When a tornado whisks Dorothy and her dog Toto from their Kansas home to the magical Land of Oz, Dorothy has to seek out its wizard to find a way home. Along the way, she makes new friends and encounters all sorts of obstacles — all made delightful by the movie’s iconic original music and use of color, which was groundbreaking at the time. Highlights include: A marketing lesson from the Apocalypse  No, everything is not going to be okay  Organized bravery  Choose your customers, choose your future Paying attention to the attention economy  Bandits and philanthropists Godin writes to get under our skin. He wants us to stand up and do something remarkable, outside the standards of the industrial system that raised us.   Made for dipping into again and again, Whatcha Gonna Do with That Duck? is a classic for fans both old and new. Source: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15843039-whatcha-gonna-do-with-that-duck BIG IDEA 1 (5:03) – Just ship. Moving past the idea of perfectionism – this is progress not perfection. This is about putting things out that are not done or perfect. Seth Goding’s altMBA course teaches the idea that every 48-72 hours you should ship something or move forward even if you are not 100% happy with that product as it is. He is a big advocate of minimum viable product. It’s about just getting things done, learning and moving as you go. He also said that it’s the process that is important and not necessarily a perfect finished product. This is also about doing the work and getting things done. It’s about putting things out into the world and getting better. Every single day for many years Seth has been posting and writing every single day, shipping and getting things out even if it’s just a couple of lines.  BIG IDEA 2 (7:07) – Be human, be different. This idea is focused on connection and caring. It is about understanding who you’re talking to and what change do they want to see in themselves. It’s getting so close to your customers and finding out what matters to them or what does not matters to them. What do they like about themselves, the situation, the product or the service, whatever it is that you’re marketing. It’s about standing out and being remarkable. He is very big in challenging the status quo – especially in education. You can see it clearly in all of his content as he challenges the way that we are taught not just in education but also in organizations. He sees that a lot of potential not being tapped into because we are so busy adhering to the rules. Many organizations are not designed to allow people to do what they could do and be remarkable. This can come from the brand perspective by using your brain to stand out or your product and services. This way you can create differentiation with your customers, create tribes or connections and have an ongoing conversation. BIG IDEA 3 (10:28) – Consistency is key. This links to the idea number one – just ship. All the ideas Seth talks about comes down to the idea of consistency, especially when paired with connection. Getting things done or shipping almost daily, moving forward and getting better. Continuous connection with your customers, tribe and the people around you.  This is also about overcoming the fears. One example is not doing anything because of fear.  Ask yourself; which is the bigger fear, doing something and making a mistake or not doing anything. Consistency is also how you get good and Seth is testament to this by being so well renowned in his field after thirty years of being consistent and getting better. In this powerful interview, globally recognized author Scott McKain shares the secrets behind brands and leaders who go beyond differentiation to become iconic. Does your brand stand out in meaningful ways? Everyone knows iconic brands like Apple, Amazon, and Porsche. They stand out in ways that not only differentiate them from competitors, but make them iconic. But these brands only represent a fraction of those who struggle to make their mark. Is your brand one of them? “Sometimes we need something to shake us up to move us to where we need to be.” -Scott McKain Being different is one thing, but differentiating in ways that have powerful meaning to customers is another thing entirely. It’s not a simple thing that can happen by introducing some gimmick or flashy design. And it’s not something you can come up with by simply researching your competition. It is a delicate and often risky matter with lots of things to consider. In fact, it sends many brands in the wrong direction, and leaves others frozen in sameness. “Familiarity breeds complacency.” -Scott McKain Going beyond differentiation to make your brand iconic is a vexing initiative. But as we love to do on this show, we want to help you crack this code! So we brought in bestselling author Scott McKain to help you understand what really has to come together before transcending that barrier in ways that make your brand a name everyone knows and trusts. “We have to find the strategies that fight these destroyers of differentiation.” -Scott McKain Sharing incredible highlights and spoilers from his new book, Scott uncovers how the most iconic brands bring together all the delicate pieces that matter most to customers to stand out in ways that are simple but powerful. Learn how your culture, your storytelling, and your perspective on the true customer experience can dovetail with the concept of differentiation in ways that get your brand noticed, remembered, and even celebrated! Here are some highlights from the interview: What are the biggest “destroyers of distinction?” [5:00] Scott shares two factors that blind leaders to these challenges, then we discuss great examples of how iconic brands get past them. [9:15] Creating a bold distinction is risky. So, what are some ways to overcome these fears and build confidence, and what should you look out for? [14:20] Spoiler alert! Scott shares generous descriptions of the four cornerstones of distinction from his book. [17:25] How do iconic brands work on being iconic to multiple customer archetypes, and more importantly, staying iconic for repeat business and referrals? [23:38] About our guest Scott McKain is a globally recognized authority on how iconic organizations and professionals create the distinction required to attract and retain customers and employees — and stand out in a hyper-competitive marketplace. His latest book, “ICONIC: How Organizations and Leaders Attain, Sustain, and Regain the Highest Level of Distinction” was recently released to rave reviews. Scott’s expertise has been quoted multiple times in USA Today, the New York Times, Wall St. Journal, and International Herald-Tribune. Arnold Schwarzenegger booked him for a presentation at the White House with the President in the audience, and Scott played the villain in a movie named by esteemed critic Roger Ebert as one of the “fifty greatest movies in the history of cinema,”. With a client list that represents the world’s most distinctive companies – like Apple, SAP, Merrill Lynch, BMW, Cisco, CDW, Fidelity, John Deere and literally hundreds more – Scott McKain was honored with induction along with Zig Ziglar, Seth Godin, Dale Carnegie and just twenty more in the “Sales and Marketing Hall of Fame.” And of course he is also a member of “Professional Speakers Hall of Fame.” Scott is broadly recognized as one of the most iconic platform presenters in the world — moving his hometown of Crothersville, Indiana to recently announce they are renaming the community’s main street as “Scott McKain Way.” Connect with Scott Twitter LinkedIn Website Special offers and more about Scott’s latest book! Seth Godin has the eyes and ears of marketers throughout the world. He is the writer of the world’s most read marketing blog, and has written several best-selling books on marketing, business and personal development. He is also an entrepreneur and a marketer of significant note, taking his place in the Marketing Hall of Fame, an induction no doubt helped by a stint as Yahoo VP of direct marketing in the 90s. In a wide-ranging interview Godin discusses: Why his advice for young marketers is “Do marketing”. The limitations of 'big data' and why it will only ever lead to incremental gains. What marketers can learn from The Grateful Dead about targeting and segmentation. The battle between good and evil that will define the future of marketing. How marketing helped end the cold war. Why more focus should be on the customer’s purpose and not the company’s.

It’s the story we tell, and mostly it’s the change we seek to make’ ‘If you’re a freelancer but you think you’re an entrepreneur you’re going to be stressed out of your mind’ ‘What you really need to worry about is not failing, it’s almost succeeding’ ‘I had the opposite: it wasn’t ‘take this job and shove it’, it was ‘how do I take this job and replicate this environment for the rest of my life’’ ‘No one cares about your ‘why’. They care about what they think your ‘why’ is’ ‘I think when making important life decisions you better be really clear about your motivation, but marketing is about what we hear - not what you say.’ ‘Human beings are always looking for something that’s worth doing, and avoiding things that they think aren’t worth doing’ ‘That fear that we all have is really getting in the way of what we could be creating’ ‘This whole passive income thing is so ridiculous. How about active income as a result of extraordinary care and effort.’ ‘Do not try to sell to strangers, try to sell to sell to people who already trust you - even if it’s only 5 people’ ‘If you’re not paying Facebook then you’re not a customer, you’re the product - and that’s worth thinking about for a minute’ Links & Resources mentioned in this episode: Seth Godin - This Is Marketing: You Can’t Be Seen Until You Learn To See [Book] Guest Details: Seth Godin Website Seth Godin Facebook Page Seth Godin Twitter Connect with Escape The Rat Race...within 12 months: Official Website Private Facebook Group BRAND NEW BOOK: SACK YOUR BOSS: The Ultimate Guide To Escape Your 9-5, by Christian Rodwell. It seems like a waste of time to introduce Seth Godin. Just search his name, "Seth" to Google is Seth Godin. He's founded several companies including Yoyodyne and Squidoo. He is the author of 18 best-selling books that have been translated into more than 35 languages. They include perennial classics like Permission Marketing, written in 1999 that elucidated the [then] new idea of delivering relevant, personalized messages that people agreed to receive. Practiced everywhere now but in 1999 it was controversial, and it birthed the  dollar permission-based email marketing industry.  The book most of you probably know him by is Purple Cow, his thesis about attention being the game. He’s also the founder of the altMBA and The Marketing Seminar, online workshops that have transformed the work of thousands of people. In 2018, he was inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame. His new book, This Is Marketing, which is more or less the focus of this episode is the first, in his words, "real book from a real publisher about marketing" that he's done in more than seven years. You don't have to be in business or into marketing to benefit from this episode. It's about how to make change happen or as Seth puts it, to cause a change you'd like to see in the world. I think work and business dilemmas usually focus on the tactical, what's step #1 step #2 which is also true personally and in relationships. How can I get Jim or Jane to do x? What's the technique? Seth proposes the answer to many questions we have about work - and I'll add life in general - is really the answer to "who can you help"? Answer all the who, what, where, why questions that way; who can I help, what can I help with, where can I help - and you win, no matter what happens with the business, the campaign, the interview. Seth exceeded my high expectations. I could write 50 things I learned from our chat, but I will spare you. So here are just a few highlights of what we talk about.  How to make a change  How to deal with resistance and fear What marketing has to do with culture What a brand really is Why he doesn't use Facebook and how to look at Social Media in regards to marketing   Where optimization lives  The long tail The biggest idea in his book  It's well worth your time at approximately 38 minutes. Enjoy!

I flew down to New York to uncover and discuss the most formative books of the one and only Seth Godin (@ThisIsSethsBlog) from his Hastings-On-Hudson studio. Seth is the bestselling author of Linchpin, Purple Cow, Tribes and many more books and is known as one of the world's biggest thinkers in communities such as TED and the Direct Marketing Association. This year he is being inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame. And did I mention he writes one of the most popular blogs in the world?  In this interview we discuss where Seth sees publishing going and his thoughts on the changes we're seeing in how people read and spend time. Seth shares his opinions on blurbs, acknowledgments, and his unique perspective on work-life balance. He also gives insights into how we can change our own world by changing the narrative inside our heads. And that's just a taste. I sat in Seth's studio transfixed, mesmerized, and hypnotized by one of the world's best brains.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Big thank you to the kind, generous, and indispensable ... Seth Godin. What you'll learn: What strange lesson did Seth learn when he gave away 3000 of his own books? How and why does Seth think the publishing industry is a mess? How does Amazon and the “long tail” change the game?  What counterintuitive benefit does Seth see in book blurbs? How do we change our world by changing the story we're telling ourselves?  How do you build trust? What is "post-religious positive business-oriented evangelism?" (And who started it?) What framework does Seth use to decide which "lines of business" he monetizes? Which of Seth's books did The Tipping Point inspire? What happened to Seth on a grounded United Airlines flight which prompted one his most remarkable insights into human nature? (And what is that insight?) How did Seth discover his ultimate mission ... and what is it? Why does Seth think work/life balance is a lie? Leave us a voicemail!
