August 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution which allowed women the right to vote. Tennessee played a pivotal role as it was the 36th and final state needed to make the 19th amendment the law of the land. Although Tennessee can make the claim of being the state that made this important change in American History happen, it belies the fact that Tennessee and the South was late in embracing the suffrage movement. In truth, it took decades of hard fighting by women across the nation to claim this most basic of rights. The suffrage movement is a case-study in grass-roots politics. Small towns across the state and nation organized local suffrage groups to help further the initiative. In the end, the 19th amendment did not, in fact, claim for all women the right to vote. For African-American women, many of whom contributed to the suffrage movement, it would take many more decades for them to secure the right to vote without stipulations. Today on History's Hook, we'll explore the history of woman suffrage in Tennessee. I have fought tooth and nail every step of the way to become a better writer. And I'm still not that great, but I'm better now. I only bring that up to say that I put a lot of energy into all this. Well, I've been not setting boundaries with family members, um, and, or setting the boundaries, but not unfortunately, due to some, you know, a lot of dysfunction, there's a dance that I've gotten in with certain family members where, whether it's consciously or subconsciously.They know, regardless of me screaming to them, telling them that I can't do it, that when it comes down to it, I will do it. And no matter me saying, no, no, no, I can't do this anymore. It's bad for me. I can't, you know, and they'll know that I'll do it. And the other fucked up part is that I know that I'll do it.Right. It's part of you doing it saying you can't do it. Right. And it's, and it's really, really fucked up. And it's gone on for a lot of years and um, wait, stop. Why are you going to do it? Why am I going to do it? Yes. Because, um, because I, I deserve to have that and to care enough about myself to do that in the main, why are you going?Why when you say I can't do it, you and everybody guilt. So guilt comes from committing a crime. Or, uh, violating a rule. Right? So what crime or rule did you violate for you to have the guilt to make you do something you don't want to do? No, it's just, it's, it's like inherent in me to not, to, to not have to be there for family and stuff like that.Do you feel that you're the last house on the block to be there for people who are just going to use you use you up and let you die at cancer and they are going to be gone already and you ain't going to, you're going to be alone. In 2009, when infant mortality rates were going down in most places, Baltimore's infant mortality rate spiked to its highest ever. For white babies, the rate was 3.5 per 1000. For African American babies, 18. Black mothers were dying at higher rates, too. The city needed not just a new program, but a whole new approach to saving babies and keeping mothers healthy. That approach, called B'more for Healthy Babies, has saved lives. Now, as the initiative enters its second decade, there's new urgency to save mothers, too.

Rochelle Riley recently ended a 20-year career as a nationally-syndicated, award-winning Detroit columnist in 2019 to become the City of Detroit's Director of Arts and Culture. In 2018, she published 'The Burden: African Americans and the Enduring Impact of Slavery,' and she's just followed that up with a new book, 'That They Lived: African Americans Who Changed the World.' In this new book, which is out this week via Wayne State University Press, Riley's words describe the formative moments in the lives of some of the icons of Black History, and those words are paired with the stunning photography of Cristi Smith-Jones, capturing black and white images of her daughter Lola, and Riley's grandson Caleb, dressed in full costume to recreate some of the most memorable images from our history books.      "That They Lived fills in gaps in the history that American children have been taught for generations. August 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution which allowed women the right to vote. Tennessee played a pivotal role as it was the 36th and final state needed to make the 19th amendment the law of the land. Although Tennessee can make the claim of being the state that made this important change in American History happen, it belies the fact that Tennessee and the South was late in embracing the suffrage movement. In truth, it took decades of hard fighting by women across the nation to claim this most basic of rights. The suffrage movement is a case-study in grass-roots politics. Small towns across the state and nation organized local suffrage groups to help further the initiative. In the end, the 19th amendment did not, in fact, claim for all women the right to vote. For African-American women, many of whom contributed to the suffrage movement, it would take many more decades for them to secure the right to vote without stipulations. Over the years African American women have reported more psychological distress following gender harassment than White women. For African American women, sexual assault and violence are incredibly pervasive issues that routinely go unreported and under-addressed. On average, one in three women are victims of intimate partner violence and one in five women are victims of sexual assault. And over EIGHTEEN PERCENT of black women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. Many cultural considerations can hinder healing for Black women survivors: the burdensome expectation of strong Black womanhood; the desire to shield Black men; and the lack of self-care examples are all real dynamics Black women survivors endure. There is no question that the coronavirus pandemic has hit the economy hard, with overall unemployment in the US at 14.7%. For African American and Latino communities, the impact is worse - 16.7% and 18.9% respectively. How will black and brown communities recover from this economic downturn? Thomas Mitchell is a Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Real Estate and Community Development Law Program at Texas A&M University. Thomas has been working for over 15 years to get a real estate partitions law updated with regards to heirs property. For decades, rightful landowners have lost their land due to unfair practices, but that has all changed now. Women who are working make about 77 cents for every dollar their male counterpart earns. For African American women the number is 64 cents and Hispanic women make 54 cents.
