Ep: 103 - White Privilege, Racism and Real Life with Jess Garland ✨

Play Episode Listen Later May 28, 2020 53:40

From Teaching Tolerance: "White privilege is—perhaps most notably in this era of uncivil discourse—a concept that has fallen victim to its own connotations. The two-word term packs a double whammy that inspires pushback. 1) The word white creates discomfort among those who are not used to being defined or described by their race. And 2) the word privilege, especially for poor and rural white people, sounds like a word that doesn’t belong to them—like a word that suggests they have never struggled. This defensiveness derails the conversation, which means, unfortunately, that defining white privilege must often begin with defining what it’s not. Otherwise, only the choir listens; the people you actually want to reach check out. White privilege is not the suggestion that white people have never struggled. Many white people do not enjoy the privileges that come with relative affluence, such as food security. Many do not experience the privileges that come with access, such as nearby hospitals. And white privilege is not the assumption that everything a white person has accomplished is unearned; most white people who have reached a high level of success worked extremely hard to get there. Instead, white privilege should be viewed as a built-in advantage, separate from one’s level of income or effort." "Systemic Racism includes the policies and practices entrenched in established institutions, which result in the exclusion or promotion of designated groups. It differs from overt discrimination in that no individual intent is necessary. It manifests itself in two ways: institutional racism: racial discrimination that derives from individuals carrying out the dictates of others who are prejudiced or of a prejudiced society structural racism: inequalities rooted in the system-wide operation of a society that excludes substantial numbers of members of particular groups from significant participation in major social institutions." Jess Garland is a Dallas based singer/songwriter, recording and performing artist.
Jess co-produced the film and composed music for Their Lives Mattered: A Dialogue Honoring Stolen Lives by Dallas law enforcement on September 5th at Texas Theatre, the project funded by the City of Dallas’ Office of Cultural Affairs. First off, the term jerk is genderless. . This book should be required reading for all people that are of dating age and reread again after any unsatisfactory relationship. . The world would be a healthier place indeed. . I’ve listened to this book and chapters of this book 5 different times on @audible. . I’ve recommended this book to countless friends that have loved it! . No one is taught relationship skills. Maybe your parents talked about it. Maybe they didn’t? . You definitely watched your parents relationship behavior and those around and drew knowledge and behavior from that. . Not all of us had good examples and bad examples tend to put us in danger for falling in love with jerks. . On the other side of that coin, if you don’t know what to look for, you can be fooled! . John Van Epp, therapist, former adjunct professor, author and lecturer, is the President and Founder of LoveThinks, LCC, an organization dedicated to the development of resources that promote healthy individuals and relationships. Dr. Van Epp’s evidence-based relationship programs were developed from the combination of his twenty-five years of clinical counseling in his private practice, of his previous position as founding pastor of a nondenominational church, and of his extensive reviews of research in premarital, marital and family relations from teaching graduate marriage and family coursework as an adjunct professor. Do you feel stuck? Is life not going the way you want to? Do you think there is more than what you are experiencing now? Are you suffering from illness or loss? ... Life isn’t a spectator sport. . "The twelve stages of healing offers fascinating insights into the complex relationship between mind, emotions, and body, and show how to promote greater health in our bodies, and harmony in our relationships.” — from the book, The 12 Stages of Healing by Donald Epstein and Nathaniel Altman. . My guest are going to talk about how the 12 stages of healing are a road map of the rhythms of consciousness that we go through in our way toward wholeness and true healing. . . Dr. Amy Gunderson-Lewis Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, Amy always had a love for nature, life, adventure, and the outdoors. Knowing good health was the gateway for being able to experience all the magic life had to offer, she pursued a career in bodywork directly out of highschool. While working in various Chiropractic offices she was exposed to the philosophy and science of Chiropractic and it gripped her soul as a familiar calling. She then went to Parker University in Dallas, Texas where she obtained her Doctor of Chiropractice degree. While in Chiropractic school, Amy’s adrenals went into exhaustion creating many debilitating symptoms. She tried many different avenues with no success. A friend then told her about a Network Spinal Analysis Chiropractor. She figured she had nothing to lose and gave it a shot. The results were life changing! There was no doubt that this was the reason she was led down the Chiropractic path. After that, Amy went all in to learn this technique so she could pass this gift along. She now serves in Dallas, Texas at Self Ubound and is grateful to get to witness miracle after miracle everyday in the lives of their practice members. . Dr. Tyler Lewis An Arkansas native, Dr. Tyler Lewis graduated from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Inspired by the body’s innate wisdom to heal, Tyler attended Parker University in Dallas, Texas where he graduated with a Doctorate of Chiropractic in April 2016. At Parker, Tyler refined his attention to studying Consciousness and its effects on an individual’s total well-being. He first engrossed himself in the hardware of the brain, studying Functional Neurology through the Carrick Institute for two and a half years. He then found Network Spinal Analysis, which radically shifted his perceptions of Self, the Human Connection, and the nature of Purpose and Reality. This inspired Tyler to dedicate his life to practicing NSA. As a woman, statistically, you’re more likely to be killed by your domestic partner than anyone else. Up until my 20’s, if you would’ve asked me how many really good men I knew, it would be under five. What you don’t see and what the world needs to see more of, is people like TJ Frank. TJ is not only a game changer and savvy entrepreneur, he’s a truly great man!! A guy with values and integrity and a wonderful family man! You can be successful and do it right! I can’t wait to talk to TJ today! “TJ Frank was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He was class of ‘93 at The Lamplighter School and graduated from Southern Methodist University. After college, he was involved in music production and land development, but always had a passion for the service industry. In 2007, TJ and a lifelong friend opened Southpaws Grill, a healthy fast-casual eatery. TJ decided to get into real estate in 2017 because he wanted to create opportunities that were beyond his current endeavors. Architecture has always been a huge interest of his, and the potential creative use of spaces has recently become a passion. Moreover, having a natural love for interacting and helping others, real estate made perfect sense for his next career choice. A quote he lives by is “never let good enough be good enough.” There is always room for improvement and growth. In his mind, there isn’t anything more valuable in business than giving memorable and consistent service. Life is a process and business is no different. Life away from work is spent with his beautiful wife and two amazing kids. If he gets any spare time you can find him on the golf course, on the lake, or Southern California relaxing.” Find TJ here - https://www.tjfrankrealestate.com/ http://www.southpawsgrill.com/

What do you do when you are faced with addiction? What do you do when you are faced with cancer? What do you do when you are faced with infertility? What do you do when you are faced with bullying? My guest has overcome all of these obstacles and her story of triumph over obstacles and her spirit of joy will inspire you. My guest is Lisa Applewhite Kimbell Her aspirations as a young child were to be a model like her mother. Her mother was a beautiful, tall, 5’10 long legged red head siren. She was mistaken for Ava Gardner on many occasions. Lisa was only standing at 5 ft 7inches and had trouble getting runway work, so she did show room modeling mostly and did some print-work modeling for featured in various magazines. She had always had a small beauty mark on her right cheek a couple of inches below her eye. She used to hate it until her mother pointed out that Marilyn Monroe had a beauty mark…as did Elizabeth Taylor. So she wore it proudly after that. As she grew older she felt like her modeling days were over and no roles were really coming in…and if they did…she thought she wasn’t right for the role. So, she became an esthetician….what better way to nurture and pamper people than to give them facials, enhance their skin and beauty and give makeovers. Her story unfolds as she set out on the most self destructive journey of her life. Drugs, alcohol fueled rages and an arrest for possession landed her in treatment. She is now the owner of the Lisa Kimbell agency and her amazing story of triumph through trouble will inspire you. https://www.thekimbellagency.biz/ Here is the Go Fund Me she mentioned www.gofundme.com/manage/untitled-richard-bartlett-project

There are hundreds of diets, exercise programs, gimmicks, tricks and traps to the “well balanced life.” Eat this. Don’t eat that. Do this. Don’t do that. Too much. Too little. Wait. Everyone is different. What do you do? How do you know which path is right? My guest discovered the way to finding balance and is changing lives! Don’t miss this exciting episode and learn how you can be the best you can be! About Alix: My “work” is getting to lead people in living better and feeling their best, and better yet, I teach people how to sustain the new lifestyles they find through this process! I get people off the diet rollercoaster and truly teach them how to LIVE—how to establish lifelong habits, practice moderation, and find true health within their balance, boundaries, and reality. I am passionate about what I do! Thanks to a battle with anorexia, I started gaining experience in nutrition at an early age. Through that, I developed an absolute passion for sharing my story and educating others about the truths of food and the body, not what society or diet-culture tells us. Not one body is the same, so how can we treat each person the same and expect the same results? My passion is to educate and pour my heart into each and every person who calls on me for help. Society screams extremes! My goal as a nutritionist is for anyone I have the privilege of working with to be a healthier, more balanced individual who is where they want to be, inside and out! www.alixbarth.com www.allwaysanotherway.com

I have always wanted to make a "soundtrack" of my life. I remember the first song I played on my little portable 45 record player. It was The Kingsman - Louie Louie. I was 5, so I'm guessing it was a record my mom gave me. I used to shake my head round and round and dance to that song. Fast forward to being 18 years old and in trouble. I was working at a retail clothing store and the Indigo Girls song, Closer to Fine was on repeat. That song - was hope in that time. I could go on and on....perhaps as you think back on your life, you could find your own soundtrack. What is your first music memory? Music is therapy. My guest, Bill Protzmann, is a man on a mission: to raise awareness of the power of music as self-care. He is a successful IT entrepreneur who holds magna cum laude degrees in piano performance and creative writing, and brings music to audiences in non-traditional ways. In 2011, he launched Music Care Inc, a for-purpose corporation that teaches practical ways music can be used for self-care.
His work was recognized by the National Council for Behavioral Health with an Award of Excellence in 2014 – the behavioral health equivalent of winning an Oscar. His volunteer work has included Board positions with Guitars for Vets and the San Diego Veterans Coalition. He has been instrumental in connecting thousands of military service members and Veterans with honor tickets to the largest healing music organization in his town: the San Diego Symphony. Flu season is here. There is more than one way to protect yourself from the flu. We live in a band aid society with our health and it’s evident that something needs to change. Wellness is something you have control of. You can make choices about your own health. There are so many things that you can do for complete wellness that you probably haven’t heard of. My guest is a forward thinking game changer who discovered wellness through failed attempts at many industry standard options. We are going to talk about so many things that you can do for health, wellness and beauty. Beauty comes from the soul — and the beautiful Jennifer Dillon is a licensed personal fitness administrator, an integrated nutrition specialist and the Founder of OhZone Clinics. She received her training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where she studied a variety of dietary theories and practical lifestyle coaching methods. After 5 years of offering nutritional counseling she added Ozone Therapy to her practice, a non-invasive sauna treatment to help client’s detox and build the immune system. She obtained her Ozone Certification in 2017 with Frank Shallenberger M.D, H.M.D. and has been administering this treatment for 2 years. Her passion for this modality comes from the healing of her now 10-year-old son and herself. Once her son started kindergarten it became apparent that he had a very low immune system and was always bringing home various viruses. With the frequent illnesses came hallucinations and delusions that sent her and her husband searching the internet trying to find answers. For over 2 years, they were sent to various doctors and treatments until eventually they were referred to a specialized neurologist. Wanting a second opinion, they stumbled upon a treatment called Ozone Therapy and began treating their son. To this day he has been free of any neurological issues and has re-built his immune system. Seeing her son’s recovery has inspired her to dedicate her life to helping others dealing with similar situations. “My passion is to create a place to educate on how simple it can be to heal the body. We are living in a world filled with toxins and if we can be proactive it will save us in the long run.” https://www.ohzoneclinics.com/ www.allwaysanotherway.com

“The Divine was expansive, but religion was reductive. Religion attempted to reduce the Divine to a knowable quantity with which mortals might efficiently deal, to pigeonhole it once and for all so that we never had to reevaluate it. With hammers of cant and spikes of dogma, we crucified and crucified again, trying to nail to our stationary altars the migratory light of the world. Thus, since religion bore false witness to the Divine, religion was blasphemy. And once it entered into its unholy alliance with politics, it became the most dangerous and repressive force that the world has ever known.” - Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins My guest is Cole Suttle - President of the Helping Friendly Book Club http://www.helpingfriendly.com/ and we are talking about The Family on Netflix and how people use religion to scam, brainwash, control and do evil things. Who gets the ultimate pass in trust? Is anyone above the law? Are there no checks and balances for certain people? The Catholic Church has hidden pedophiles for YEARS!!!!!! So that children could continue being assaulted!!!! Not to mention every other religion with laundry lists of scandals of abuse. Here is just ONE example of fleecing in the name of the Lord --> Ephren Taylor, who fleeced some $16 million from members of church flocks in 43 states by preaching so-called "prosperity gospel." (from CNBC) Why should anyone get a pass of complete trust for uttering key phrases? Especially since fraud is RAMPANT in this area! Religion becomes a taboo topic -- when you question faith. However -- if you can't question something -- RED FLAG! If you've got nothing to hide. You've got nothing to hide. What if there is something even deeper than just scamming your neighbor.... Cole Suttle - posted about "The Family" on Netflix - and WHOA! - We are going to talk about it - and dive into what I touched on above. Cole was born to high school sweethearts and grew up in Pasedena California. He attended SMU and majored in religious studies with a double minor in Philosophy and English and is currently working on a Master of Arts in Design and Innovation at SMU. He began working for the Ritz Carlton in Aspen and returned to Dallas to build the Guest Relations department from scratch for the newly opened Dallas Ritz Carlton. He loved working for The Ritz-Carlton, they have a great philosophy and it felt like a giant laboratory for studying Human Behavior, focusing especially on the art of blowing people’s minds. He was fascinated to better understand what the difference between a 4 and a 5 star hotel was, and this led him to develop something he likes to call the Metaphysics of Hospitality. He was awarded The Ritz-Carlton Gold Standard Award (given annually to only 5 Ladies and Gentlemen worldwide) before switching from operations to Business and Executive Sales to further test out his theories. Concurrently he’s been working on his passion project, The Helping Friendly Book Club, which started in 2013 “to search for the Secrets to Eternal Joy and Never Ending Splendor” with his friends. More than anything the book club was a way for him to keep exploring the universe, to keep searching for the truth, and to keep following his curiosity with a community people instead of just on his own. Little did he know that almost 7 years and 32 books later the club would still be going strong, and is now grown into The Helping Friendly Foundation, a non profit 501c3 on a mission “to help elevate the public conversation and connect people through books in convivial ways.” Positioning ourselves at the confluence of the placemaking and the Little Free Library movements, the goal is to elevate the free-public book exchange to the level of an artform in three phases. A master integrator and instigator of productive friction, JSB explores the whitespace between disciplines and builds bridges between disparate organizations and ideas. From the article: I think we’re way too focused on creativity. It’s misguided. We should be focused on imagination. . . The real key is being able to imagine a new world. Once I imagine something new, then answering how to get from here to there involves steps of creativity. So I can be creative in solving today’s problems, but if I can’t imagine something new, then I’m stuck in the current situation. . . "JSB’s comments on the importance of imagination reminded me of a book I read a few years ago, Innovation – the Missing Dimension, by MIT professors Richard Lester and Michael Piore."

Could you do this exercise in your mind right now? If I told you that we would take one minute of time right now, and in this one minute of time, you have a choice. You can think about whatever you want. And that would be your minute. So, if you wanted to spend this one minute right now thinking about the person you love the most...and you think about every little detail about that person, how they make you feel, how you feel around them and that minute goes by and that’s what you’ve thought —-about well that’s your minute!!! Likewise, if you were to take that same minute and think about someone who you wouldn’t care to even think about again, but you took that whole minute thinking about all the reasons why you would not care to speak to that person again, well that’s your minute. And if before beginning this exercise, we would both agree that you had a choice in what to think about in that minute. One way or another your time is being defined in that minute by what you thought about, would that be correct? So knowing that, if I told you that you could do a little experiment...and then of course, only you would know if it’s working, because you live your life. I wonder if you would try to take 30 minutes a day and daydream a better life? ✨

This is one to listen to and share with everyone you know! About Brook Cheatham - Yogi. Entrepreneur. Empowered. A word I live by. All of us have the ability to overcome things in our lives. Defining moments in our "story" give us a choice, the courage to either become our truth, or live in a lie. Before yoga came into my life, I was a young mother, strapped to a corporate job, with laundry list full of guilt, shame and baggage from a turbulent youth. Fitness goals led me to yoga, and yes, I became physically strong, but slowly I began to notice changes occurring in my actual nature. The baggage from my past started to slowly get stripped away. I began to realize who I was deep down, and deep inside beauty started to unfold where there was once only pain. My past does not define me, but I know the challenges I have been blessed with in this life are so I can empower others with the knowledge that all we have to do is look inside for the answers. That is what yoga does for you. It strips away what is not real, replaces it with Love, and gives you back what you truly are at your core, your spirit. And it's never too late to start.
