The province has an ambitious plan to build Ontario: from new housing that families can call home, to highways and public transit connecting our communities, and clean energy projects powering our economy. But with one in three tradespeople nearing retirement, we must pass on the wisdom and expertise of the Golden Generation of Skilled Tradespeople to the next generation of workers and students. The Empire Club of Canada is honoured to welcome Hon. David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development, for Tools of the Trade: Ontario's Blueprint for Prosperity, a keynote address outlining the province's next steps to grow Ontario's workforce, and how the province is uniting organized labour and industry to build Ontario's brighter, stronger future. Join us on December 2nd with the Hon. David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development, for a much-anticipated discussion on growing the workforce Ontario needs to drive our prosperity and ensure our province continues to be the best place to live, work, and raise a family. The fireside chat will be moderated by Michael “Pinball” Clemons, General Manager of the Toronto Argonauts and Founder of the Pinball Foundation. This is an event you won't want to miss!

Greg Brady spoke with Bjorn Lomborg, who is a Danish political scientist, author, and the president of the think tank Copenhagen Consensus Centre. He discussed the Cop 29 Conference that just took place in Azerbaijan and how he feels developed nations have now resorted to bribing underdeveloped countries in order to get them to get on board with climate initiatives. He also discussed data surrounding electric vehicles and how he doesn't feel EV's are the future and explained their downfalls including how they aren't useful for the trucking industry and people who don't own a garage to charge them. Next, David Piccini Ontario Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. Piccini spoke about having at least 2 million temporary residents here in Ontario and how Prime Minister Trudeau's policies have broken the public's faith in immigration. Piccini also explained a shift in making sure immigrants have a better skill set to help contribute to the Canadian economy. The Minister also talks about how the province is planning to introduce a job-protected leave of 16 weeks for people who adopt children or have kids through surrogacy. Also, Jon Burnside – Toronto city councilor. Burnside discussed Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and how she is behind in addressing many issues affecting Toronto and specifically addressing anti-Semitic graffiti on the TTC. He also explained the power structure at Toronto city hall and who is really responsible for making policies and plenty more. Finally, Greg focused in on international students speaking out against, what they believe, is unfair treatment about the student Visas expiring and that they will have to leave Canada.

After the Second World War, an Australian diplomat was one of eight people to draft the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights. And in the years that followed, Australians of many different stripes—including activists fighting for Aboriginal rights and women's rights, communists, and even anticommunists—invoked human rights in their respective political struggles. Yet, despite these Australians' embrace of human rights, the Australian government didn't sign the Declaration of Human Rights until 1972, and then it took even longer to ratify it. Australia's ambiguous relationship with human rights is precisely what Jon Piccini untangles in his fascinating, deeply researched book, Human Rights in Twentieth-Century Australia (Cambridge University Press, 2019). By exploring these many different groups' invocation of human rights, Piccini, a faculty member at the Australian Catholic University, is able to show how ideas and language can circulate even across ideological divisions. This book should be read by those interested in the global history of ideas and human rights, Australian political and social historians, along with those like me, who know little about Australia but would like to learn a lot more. Dexter Fergie is a PhD student of US and global history at Northwestern University. He is currently researching the 20th century geopolitical history of information and communications networks.
