fWotD Episode 2546: Death of Blair Peach Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Wednesday, 24 April 2024 is Death of Blair Peach.Clement Blair Peach (25 March 1946 – 24 April 1979) was a New Zealand teacher who was killed during an anti-racism demonstration in Southall, London, England. A campaigner and activist against the far right, in April 1979 Peach took part in an Anti-Nazi League demonstration in Southall against a National Front election meeting in the town hall and was hit on the head, probably by a member of the Special Patrol Group (SPG), a specialist unit within the Metropolitan Police Service. He died in hospital that night. An investigation by Commander John Cass of the Metropolitan Police's Complaints Investigation Bureau concluded that Peach had been killed by one of six SPG officers, and others had preserved their silence to obstruct his investigation. The report was not released to the public, but was available to John Burton, the coroner who conducted the inquest; excerpts from a leaked copy were also published in The Leveller and The Sunday Times in early 1980. In May 1980 the jury in the inquest arrived at a verdict of death by misadventure, although press and some pressure groups—notably the National Council for Civil Liberties—expressed concern that no clear answers had been provided, and at the way Burton conducted the inquest.Celia Stubbs, Peach's partner, campaigned for the Cass report to be released and for a full public inquiry. An inquiry was rejected, but in 1988 the Metropolitan Police paid £75,000 compensation to Peach's family. In 2009 Ian Tomlinson died after he was struck from behind by a member of the Territorial Support Group, the SPG's successor organisation; the parallels in the deaths proved to be the catalyst in the release of the Cass report to the public. The Metropolitan Police commissioner, Sir Paul Stephenson, released the report and supporting documentation. He also offered an official apology to Peach's family. The policing of the demonstration in Southall damaged community relations in the area. Since Peach's death the Metropolitan Police have been involved in a series of incidents and poorly conducted investigations—the 1993 murder of Stephen Lawrence, the death of Jean Charles de Menezes in 2005, the botched 2006 Forest Gate raid and the death of Tomlinson—all of which tarnished the image of the service. Peach's death has been remembered in the music of The Pop Group, Ralph McTell and Linton Kwesi Johnson; the National Union of Teachers set up the Blair Peach Award for work for equality and diversity issues and a school in Southall is named after him. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:37 UTC on Wednesday, 24 April 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Death of Blair Peach on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Salli Standard.

Step into a realm where history's dark secrets resurface, and the spectral world confronts the tangible. In this episode, we delve into the unsettling cases of Helen Duncan and Charles Walton, two individuals ensnared by the lingering grip of witchcraft, even in the 20th century. Helen Duncan, a gifted spiritual medium, found herself accused of witchcraft, espionage, and fraud during World War II. Her story blurs the line between the ethereal and the rational, offering a disquieting glimpse into the enduring power of supernatural beliefs. Meanwhile, in a tranquil English village in 1945, a gruesome murder shocked the world. Charles Walton's brutal demise begs unsettling questions about the persistent influence of witchcraft beliefs, even in the modern age. The Witchcraft Act 1735 The Witchcraft Act of 1735 stands as a pivotal moment in the history of witch trials in Great Britain. This historic legislation, passed by the Parliament of the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1735, brought an end to the dark era of hunting and executing individuals accused of practicing witchcraft. Unlike its predecessors, the Act introduced a significant shift in perspective, assuming that there were no real witches with genuine magical powers but rather individuals who claimed such powers to deceive and exploit the vulnerable. The maximum penalty under this new law was a year's imprisonment, marking a stark departure from the earlier belief that witches derived their abilities from pacts with Satan. Instead, the Act embraced a more primitive and medieval view, in line with the early Christian Church's position, which had been contested over the centuries by witch-phobic Inquisitors. This Act, aligning with the broader European trend, led to the decline of witch trials in the 18th century after reaching a peak around 1600 and a series of outbursts in the late 17th century. It signaled a significant step toward the modern legal history of witchcraft and ultimately put an end to the persecution of those accused of being witches in Great Britain. The last execution for witchcraft in the region occurred in 1727 when Janet Horne met a tragic fate. The Last Convictions In England In September 1943, Helen Duncan found herself behind bars, a peculiar victim of the Witchcraft Act 1735. Her alleged crime? Claiming the ability to summon spirits, a practice that led to her arrest and imprisonment. However, her followers have long argued that her incarceration was not just a matter of supernatural beliefs but rather a sinister scheme concocted by superstitious military intelligence officers. The pivotal moment that drew the authorities' attention occurred when she purportedly made contact with the spirit of a sailor from the ill-fated HMS Barham, a sinking that was concealed from the public at the time. Helen faced a litany of charges, including conspiracy to contravene the Witchcraft Act 1735, obtaining money by false pretences, and public mischief. Duncan's nine-month prison term marked her as often described as the last person convicted under this archaic Act. However, Jane Rebecca Yorke, from Forest Gate in east London, shares this dubious distinction, convicted in September 1944 for similar offenses. The Witchcraft Act 1735 met its end in 1951 with the enactment of the Fraudulent Mediums Act, championed by Spiritualists and Thomas Brooks MP. In this episode, you will be able to: 1. Explore the life of Helen Duncan, her arrest and prosecution. 2. Explore the last witchcraft murder case in England. Oi! I said oi! Pop Screen has its hardest-hitting episode this week - yes, perhaps even grittier than Spice World - with Ben "Plan B" Drew's directorial debut Ill Manors. A multi-stranded tale of drug-dealing, deprivation and all-round dodginess in Forest Gate, it has its roots in Drew's 2008 short film Michelle. On release, however, it became an unexpected talking point thanks to the then-recent English riots - enough of a hot-button release for the Observer to get Lethal Bizzle and Edwina Currie to share their thoughts on it, anyway. Since then, the film has somewhat faded from view, which is why it's our pleasure to be joined by Cliff from the Devil Times Five horror podcast to make the case for it as a great movie. Along the way we consider the film's well-chosen cast, from rising stars like Riz Ahmed and Ed Skrein through non-professionals and even a cameo from John Cooper Clarke. Graham and Cliff also chat about their divergent thoughts on British kitchen sink cinema, the age at which it becomes impossible to tell what age someone is, and Cliff's very particular favourites list. In these tough inner cities it can be hard to survive, which is why real Gs set up a Patreon where you can find exclusive bonus episodes of Pop Screen, Doctor Who reviews, our other movie podcast Director's Lottery, and more. Perhaps one of the most fascinating facets of working for a magazine like ours is in stumbling upon music that you have never heard before being played by an unfamiliar face. This is fundamentally the reason that we all became interested in the first place, unfamiiar faces playing unfamiliar music. Last month Kate Harahan played at our record shop in Forest Gate as part of a day curated by Nadia Ksaiba, she surprised us with her intricate selection and demonstrated a vast array of musical knowledge and understanding. Based in Edinburgh, music isn't her first line of work, more so a labour of love which she manages to weave amidst maternity reflexology and yoga. We invited her to deliver a mix as part of our Monday series and she does so in fine style selecting music by the likes of Witch, Hitomi Tohyama, Mike Burns and more.
Before he was Plan B, a young man called Ben Drew was growing up in London’s Forest Gate. With a guitar and the music of Smokey Robinson to work with, Ben set about becoming what he is today: a chronicler of our times. In this enthralling interview with James O’Brien, Ben shares his story, a story that is inextricably tied to his music, experiencing violence at home from a young age and losing friends to crack and heroin, and how he channelled those stories into songs, breaking into the mainstream, and coming home to share the positive power of music in the community that shaped him.
