It's not yet clear exactly how devasting the loss of federal funding for climate nonprofits and climate tech companies will be, but we know the toll will be high. Beyond the funding freeze, there have also been rumors of other federal action targeting nonprofits in this space. No one knows exactly what will happen, but it's clear that philanthropy is more important than ever. Philanthropy alone can't fill the gap left by the government, but it can make a real difference. This episode is the first in a series of conversations we'll have this year focused on climate philanthropy. We're starting with not only one of the biggest climate foundations in the U.S., but also one that combines philanthropy with investments designed to catalyze more capital flows to climate. The MacArthur Foundation has long been a leader in using this impact investing approach to improve the ROI for investors seeking market-rate returns. In today's conversation, we're joined by MacArthur Foundation's Director of Impact Investments John Balbach and Program Officer Deborah Philbrick. We spoke about the Foundation's holistic, problem-first approach to climate, what that means for both their philanthropic funding and impact investing, how they're stepping up to what they see as a civil society crisis, and much more. Lots to learn and think about in this one. Let me know if you have ideas about other foundations to feature in this series. Here we go. On today's episode, we cover:[02:36] Introductions of John and Deborah[04:21] Overview of MacArthur Foundation's Climate Work[05:52] Climate Solutions Big Bet Details[07:02] Philanthropic Strategy and Theory of Change[08:15] Grantee Examples[10:37] Impact of Federal Funding Freeze[12:55] Strategic Shifts and Foundation's Role[15:57] Climate Philanthropy Landscape[17:04] Sub-national Climate Priorities[18:19] MacArthur's Impact Investing History[20:36] Risk and Return Approach[22:45] Impact Assessment Methodology[25:11] Catalytic Capital Strategies[28:01] Investment Thesis[31:20] Administration's Impact on Investments[33:30] Systemic Transformation DiscussionResources MentionedMacArthur FoundationMacArthur Fellows ProgramMacArthur Foundation: Climate Solutions Big BetJust Transition FundLeague of Conservation Voters Education FundAzolla VenturesEncourage Solar FinanceSunwealthMacArthur Foundation: How We Leverage the ‘Full Continuum' of Capital to Address the Climate CrisisMacArthur Foundation: Aligning Our...

Empowering Women in Venture Capital: The Journey of Marcia Dawood Marcia Dawood is not just a name in the venture capital world; she is a beacon of hope and empowerment for women entrepreneurs across the globe. As a venture partner at Mindshift Capital, Marcia's mission revolves around elevating women-led innovation in sectors that matter, such as health tech, fintech, edtech, and food tech. This blog post delves into her journey, her investment thesis, and the essential changes needed in the venture capital landscape to foster diversity and inclusion. From Angel Investing to Venture Capital Marcia's venture into the investment world began about twelve years ago when she attended an angel investing meeting. Initially unaware of what angel investing entailed, she quickly grasped the innovative potential around her. However, she was struck by a sobering realization: the lack of funding for women entrepreneurs. This pivotal moment inspired her to join various funds, contributing as an investor and member of investment committees. Marcia's passion for supporting women-led businesses led her to co-found Mindshift Capital with her colleague Heather Henyan. Their goal? To invest in women-led companies globally, creating a ripple effect of change and innovation. The Investment Thesis at Mindshift Capital Marcia's investment thesis is rooted in the belief that women-led companies can drive significant change in the world. Mindshift Capital focuses on four key areas: health tech, fintech, edtech, and food tech. These sectors are not just trends; they represent the future of innovation and societal improvement. Global Trends in Investment Marcia highlights a fascinating trend: many entrepreneurs seeking funding often look to the U.S. to commercialize their innovations. This phenomenon is colloquially referred to as "all roads lead to Delaware." U.S. investors can sometimes be hesitant to invest in foreign companies due to unfamiliar tax implications. However, Marcia and her team have successfully navigated these complexities, allowing them to invest in promising companies at lower valuations while providing valuable support for their growth. Understanding Money: A Personal Journey Marcia is currently fascinated by the mindset surrounding money and how it affects people's willingness to invest. She believes that if more individuals understood the potential for positive change through investment, the landscape of entrepreneurship would look vastly different. Many people still perceive investing as an exclusive domain for the wealthy and well-connected. To address this gap in understanding, Marcia launched her podcast, The Angel Next Door, aimed at demystifying angel investing and making it accessible to everyone. She also authored the book Do Good While Doing Well, which discusses how individuals can invest in impactful companies while also achieving financial returns. The Educational Gap in Investing Marcia observes that women often donate money, while men are more inclined to invest. This discrepancy highlights a significant educational gap. Many women are willing to invest but may lack the confidence or knowledge to do so. Conversations about investing need to be normalized and encouraged, ensuring that women feel invited into the investment room. The Future of Venture Capital When envisioning the future of venture capital, Marcia sees a movement toward democratizing private investing. The SEC's 2016 rule change allowed for equity crowdfunding, enabling more people to invest with smaller amounts, starting from as little as $50. This shift has the potential to create a more inclusive investment landscape. Marcia believes that just as public markets have evolved to become more accessible, private investing can follow suit. The rise of platforms like Robinhood has already changed how people engage with the stock market, and similar changes can be expected in venture capital. Expanding Definitions of Accredited Investors Another critical aspect of the future of venture capital involves redefining what it means to be an accredited investor. Marcia sits on an advisory committee to the SEC, where discussions surrounding the definition of accredited investors are ongoing. She argues that expanding this definition and providing more education will allow a broader range of individuals to participate in venture capital, ultimately leading to systemic change. Resources for Aspiring Investors Marcia's website, marciadawood.com, is a treasure trove of resources for aspiring investors. Visitors can access free materials, including the first chapter of her book and worksheets designed to guide new investors. Her podcast episodes cover various topics related to equity crowdfunding and fundraising, making them valuable for both entrepreneurs and potential investors. Frequently Asked Questions What inspired Marcia to focus on women-led companies? Marcia's journey began when she realized the significant underfunding of female entrepreneurs despite their innovative potential. This motivated her to create opportunities for women-led businesses through her work at Mindshift Capital. How can someone become an angel investor? Anyone interested in becoming an angel investor can start by educating themselves through resources like Marcia's podcast, The Angel Next Door, and her book, Do Good While Doing Well. Additionally, joining local angel groups or crowdfunding platforms can provide valuable insights and networking opportunities. What are the key sectors Mindshift Capital focuses on? Mindshift Capital primarily invests in health tech, fintech, edtech, and food tech, aiming to support companies that are making a meaningful difference in the world. How does Marcia see the future of venture capital evolving? Marcia envisions a more democratized venture capital landscape, where private investing becomes accessible to a broader audience. She believes that changes in regulations and educational initiatives will facilitate this shift. Conclusion Marcia Dawood's journey from angel investing to becoming a venture partner at Mindshift Capital is a testament to her commitment to empowering women-led businesses. Her work not only fosters innovation but also encourages a more inclusive investment landscape. By breaking down barriers and providing resources, Marcia is paving the way for the next generation of investors and entrepreneurs. Interview with Shane Williams, President & CEO of West Red Lake Gold MinesOur previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/west-red-lake-gold-mines-tsxvwrlg-resurrecting-a-high-grade-gold-asset-5502Recording date: 23rd August 2024West Red Lake Gold Mines (TSXV:WRLG) is positioning itself as a compelling investment opportunity in the gold mining sector, focusing on the restart of the Madsen gold project in Ontario's renowned Red Lake district. This 500-word summary outlines the key aspects investors should consider when evaluating this near-term production story. The Madsen project boasts a high-grade resource of approximately 2 million ounces at 7g/t gold. Located in a tier-one mining jurisdiction, the project benefits from existing infrastructure, including a processing plant and a 1,200-meter shaft, significantly reducing capital requirements for restart.WRLG's approach to revitalizing the Madsen mine centers on extensive definition drilling. The company has completed over 50,000 meters of drilling and plans an additional 50,000 meters. This high-definition drilling campaign, with spacing as tight as 6-7 meters, aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the ore body, enabling optimized mine planning and operational efficiency.Initial production goals are modest but achievable, targeting 60,000-70,000 ounces of gold annually at a processing rate of 800 tons per day. This measured approach allows the company to establish consistent operations before considering future expansions.WRLG has raised $100 million to date and currently holds over C$40 million in cash. The company estimates needing an additional C$50-70 million to bring the mine back into production. Management is exploring various financing options, including potential royalty or streaming deals, to minimize equity dilution.Under the leadership of CEO Shane Williams, the company is taking a cautious and methodical approach to project development. This strategy aims to avoid the pitfalls experienced by the previous operator and aligns with current market expectations for disciplined capital allocation in the mining sector. The current strong gold price environment, with prices around $2,500 per ounce, provides a favorable backdrop for project development. The combination of high gold prices and the project's high-grade nature suggests potential for robust margins once production is achieved.Investment Thesis for West Red Lake Gold Mines are:High-grade resource in a premier mining jurisdictionNear-term production potential within 12-18 monthsExtensive de-risking through definition drillingExisting infrastructure reducing capital requirementsStrong gold price environment supporting project economicsExperienced management teamExploration upside and potential for resource expansionM&A potential as a future producing asset in a tier-1 jurisdictionInvestors should be aware of the complexities involved in restarting a previously operated mine and closely monitor the company's progress in completing its drilling campaign, finalizing its mine plan, and securing the necessary funding to restart operations. Successful execution of the mine plan and securing the remaining capital are critical factors. The project's history, including challenges faced by the previous operator, underscores the importance of careful planning and realistic expectations.West Red Lake Gold Mines presents an intriguing opportunity for investors seeking exposure to near-term gold production potential in a stable mining jurisdiction. The company's focus on de-risking the Madsen project through extensive drilling, combined with the advantages of existing infrastructure and a high-grade resource, positions it well for potential success. As the company progresses towards its production goals, it may attract increased attention from both investors and potential acquirers, potentially creating value for early supporters of the project.View West Red Lake Gold Mines: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/west-red-lake-gold-mines-incSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

It is one thing to invest in early stage companies, but to do so in a nascent industry that constantly reinvents and rediscovers itself is a whole different venture. Richard Muirhead co-founded Fabric Ventures in 2012 around the thesis of supporting the Open Economy. While at first this meant investing in Bitcoin-related projects, once Ethereum was announced, a new horizon unveiled, filled with tremendous potential. The only constant in Austin seems to be change. Whether that be the people moving here, the buildings defining our skyline, or the startups being founded and funded. Today, my guest is Krishna Srinivasan, founding Partner of LiveOak Ventures. We will explore what it means to invest in Texas startups yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Episode HighlightsThe need for early-stage venture capital in Texas led to the founding of LiveOak Ventures, which has a multi-segment approach focused on Texas-based entrepreneurs.Krishna identifies three types of founders now in Austin: experienced local entrepreneurs, successful founders from other markets relocating to Austin, and new residents inspired by the city's quality of life to start businesses here.Despite significant progress in startup formation and mid-level scaling, Austin faces gaps in experienced talent for managing large-scale, nine-figure+ companies and in securing substantial late stage venture capital. What's Next Austin?"Tremendous areas of promise and excitement where Austin takes all these newfound riches, when I say riches, newfound talent and with its traditional strengths and vertical markets to go to the next wave of and continuing this amazing wave of new company formation, growth, and scaling."Krishna Srinivasan: LinkedInLiveOak Ventures: Website, X/Twitter, LinkedIn -------------------Austin Next Links: Website, X/Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn
