It's Super Bowl weekend — so today's episode is all about football. First, a 2021 interview between NPR's A Martinez and former NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson. Johnson's book The Forgotten First looks back at the racial politics of his beloved sport, and highlights four key players who desegregated the game back in the 1940s. Then, NPR's David Greene paid a visit to legendary coach Bill Parcells' home in 2015 and asked about his memoir, Parcells: A Football Life, and the coaching tree he left behind even after his retirement. How Rouen, a city on the Seine, far from the open sea, became France's largest grain port; denim production returns to its place of birth in Nimes; and the story of Alice Guy, the world's first woman director, forgotten by history. French wheat exports got a boost with the war in Ukraine, and most are shipped out of Rouen, a port on the Seine, 100 kilometres away from the open sea. Manuel Gaborieau, head of agribuisness for Haropa, which manages the port, explains the historical and logistical reasons for an inland port. John Hoptak, Gettysburg National Military Park On the evening of April 18, 1861, less than 72 hours after the surrender of Fort Sumter and President Abraham Lincoln's subsequent call-to-arms, the very first Northern volunteer soldiers arrived in the nation's beleaguered capital. Although long overshadowed in history by the more famous 6th Massachusetts Infantry, these soldiers composed the ranks of five companies of Pennsylvania militia who later became known as the "First Defenders." Attacked by a pro-secessionist/pro-Confederate mob in Baltimore on their journey south to Washington, these First Defenders shed some of the very first blood of what would become the country's bloodiest conflict. Included among those injured was Nicholas "Nick" Biddle, a sixty-five-year-old African American man who may have had escaped from slavery, and who now wore the uniform of one of the Pennsylvania companies. Join John Hoptak for a look at the fascinating life and story of Biddle, and the history of these lesser-known companies, their prompt response, and their place in American Civil War history. Bob Glauber talks about the Browns' matchup with the Jets, why he thinks the Browns' chance at a playoff berth is a complicated matter, Brian Daboll's win in his coaching debut with the Giants, the biggest overreactions in Week 1 and his latest book, The Forgotten First.
Bob Glauber has covered the NFL since 1985 and has been Newsday's NFL columnist since 1992. He recently announced his retirement from the daily coverage of the league but will contribute occasional articles and work on book projects. He was selected in 2021 for the Bill Nunn Career Achievement Award by the Pro Football Writers of America and is a three-time winner of the New York State Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association. Glauber was the President of the PFWA for the 2018-20 seasons. He is the author of two books, “The Forgotten First” and “Guts and Genius.” In this episode, Glauber explains how retirement was entirely his idea and reflects on the four decades of covering the NFL. He explained his favorite players to cover, and how the newspaper business has evolved during his career. This podcast has some great stories, including his coverage of Rex Ryan, whether Eli Manning is a Hall-of-Famer, and advice he received from Carl Banks. Follow Bob on social media @BobGlauber.
Surf lifesavers and paid lifeguards are an under-researched, yet vital, part of the first responder workforce. Having patrolled beaches to keep the public safe for over 113 years, surf lifesavers and lifeguards often risk their own lives, placing the duty of care to others above themselves. Continued exposure to traumatic or catastrophic rescue and first aid incidents during their time as members and first responders, has the potential to negatively affect their mental health. Additionally, with volunteers commencing their patrolling career as young as the age of 13, understanding their exposure levels to trauma and their mental health understanding and awareness is important. This week's guest Shane Daw is the General Manager Coastal Safety at Surf Life Saving Australia, a long-standing volunteer member of the organisation, with extensive experience in rescue helicopter operations. Shane manages and oversees coastal safety, lifesaving, research, and emergency service functions, in addition to the operations of Southern Helicopters. Shane has more than 30 years' experience with drowning research and development of programs to care for members involved in emergency situations. He is a member of the International Life Saving Federation Drowning Prevention Commission and was awarded an Emergency Services Medal (ESM) in the Australian Honours. Stay tuned as Shane brings to the table a strategy to address the gaps in the under-reporting of surf lifesaver and lifeguard mental health, and how this plan can better provide for members, create evidence-based training programs and resources, and improve productivity, retention, and attraction to the surf lifesaving movement.
"I very frequently get the question: 'What's going to change in the next 10 years?' And that is a very interesting question; it's a very common one. I almost never get the question: 'What's not going to change in the next 10 years?' And I submit to you that that second question is actually the more important of the two -- because you can build a business strategy around the things that are stable in time." Jess Bezos. In a rapidly changing marketing landscape it's very easy to get distracted by everything new. It's exciting. It's buzzworthy. It has political capital (to an extent). This has led to an explosion in different digital media, and tech tools. All claiming they have the secret sauce to effective marketing. So why do so many of these investments fail to translate reliably into commercially valuable outcomes? Therefore, what's more interesting to me, are the fundamental parts of marketing which don't change. Because, if you understand those, you can apply them to everything you do. Any channel. Any execution, any context - and be confident that it will be somewhat successful. So, today we're talking with Malcolm Auld. "Omg John why are you talking to a 'boomer'?" Shock horror ladies and gentlemen - people with lots of experience, often know what they are talking about. So who better to talk about the first principles of great marketing and direct mail, than the person who published the first book in the world outside of North America on email marketing. He's been there for the first dot com, and now here for the second. He's worked in some of the largest agencies in the world and the smallest. Started his own agencies. Lectures at University. Worked in senior marketing and board positions for both large and small businesses. B2B, B2C, B2G. Product and services. Online SaaS and traditional. Digital media and traditional. You name it, he's done it. And yes, he's not a millennial, futurist, Web3.0, cryto-bro, cyber hustler. Thank god. In this episode, you'll find out interesting things like: What is direct marketing? What is direct mail? Why DTC is a concept that is over 150 years old and which company pioneered the format. Why A/B testing is also a decades old concept used in the advertising industry by another 'boomer' exec. Find how the historical tussle between the direct marketing and brand advertising agencies started, and why it continues to blindside marketers to this day - to the detriment of everyone. Find out why digital marketers would benefit from studying direct marketing inorder to prevent making mistakes and spending time discovering things which have already been discovered. Why should retailers cease offering free delivery? Why you should still send printed bills and invoices to your customers instead of electronically? Why do some of the biggest, fastest growing tech companies use direct mail to acquire and sell to customers, including Amazon, Google, PayPal, Ubereats, Dinnerly, Doordash, Sonos, and Hellofresh, - Which form of direct mail is the fastest growing marketing channel in North America, second only to TikTok? What led to the bomb squad blowing up one of Malcolm's direct mail pieces on prime-time TV? Which channel did David Ogilvy use the most to acquire new clients for his agency? Do people still read long form copy or are they too time poor? Why is understanding the Hemingway and Flesch reading scores critical to your success in selling anything, to anyone? And sure the topic is Direct Mail or Direct Marketing, but there's so much more gold in here for new marketers, junior marketers, senior marketers and everyone else in between. Ignore the wisdom espoused in this episode to your own detriment.

You've likely heard the names of Ruby Bridges, Jackie Robinson and Thurgood Marshall — the first African Americans to desegregate public schools, baseball and the Supreme Court. But do you know the names of Kenny Washington, Woody Strode, Marion Motley or Bill Willis? Unless you're a football fan, you likely haven't. And that's what Keyshawn Johnson is trying to rectify in his book The Forgotten First, the story of the men who helped break the NFL's color barrier. NPR's A Martinez sat down with Johnson to discuss those four men, and the legacy they left behind.
