On the latest edition of the SMW podcast, Jon Lewis and Armand Broady discuss the end of the long-running ESPN show "Around the Horn" after 23 years on the air. The hosts analyze how the show has evolved over time, from its early days with a more confrontational tone under host Jay Mariotti, to the current more measured approach under Tony Reali. They explore how the show's diversification of panelists may have turned off some viewers, and how ESPN's desire for more "rage bait" and heated debates may have made the show less valuable to the network. The discussion then shifts to the sports media strategy of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who has been vocal about the company's approach to sports rights. The hosts are skeptical of Zaslav's claims that losing the NBA rights was a "great decision" for the company, and predict challenges ahead as WBD tries to fill programming gaps. Finally, the podcast touches on the retirement announcement of longtime Fox NFL analyst Jimmy Johnson, and speculates on how Fox may look to replace him on their pregame show.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITIs early voting essential for democracy, or does it risk opening Pandora's box of electoral issues? We explore this contentious topic by stepping into the shoes of voters in Alabama, a state where early voting is not an option. Our conversation traverses the landscape of state versus federal powers and election integrity, making way for a lively debate on whether the traditional Election Day still holds its ground. Switching gears, we unravel the bizarre yet compelling saga of Peanut the squirrel, whose unexpected fame on an OnlyFans account run by Mark and Daniella Longo raises ethical eyebrows. This story pushes us to question the boundaries of financial success and moral responsibility in the digital age, especially when Peanut's life takes a tragic turn due to rabies concerns. In another intriguing twist, we tackle Tom Brady's public critique of NFL referees, a move that puts him in the hot seat due to his dual role as Raiders minority owner and Fox NFL analyst. We weigh in on the complexities of balancing professional responsibilities with personal opinions, especially in the high-stakes world of sports commentary. Lastly, brace yourself for an enthralling tale of giant spiders flourishing in the UK. Thanks to conservation efforts, these arachnids have reached record numbers, sparking conversations about conservation and humanity's role in shaping the future of wildlife. Former Broncos and current Fox NFL analyst Mark Schlereth joined the show. Mark has notably been a ‘hater' of Russell Wilson, so he hopped on to chat about what he saw last night. He said it's no personal agenda, he just doesn't care for how he has played the last few years. He made note that fans were booing him in the 1st quarter last night. Mark got into some more of what he saw last night and where he still feels his critiques of Wilson are warranted. He used the term ‘toxic positivity' when describing Wilson and thinks it could wear on the organization over time, unless Russ has truly changed his mentality. Mark labeled Wilson's time in Denver as ‘atrocious.' He said sometimes players have to accept the fact that they aren't as good as some parts of their game as they used to be. Mark gave Wilson his flowers and also credited the coaching staff a ton for how last night looked.

Rapid Fire topics include: * ESPN's FPI gives Notre Dame the best chance of any team in the country to go undefeated this season. Which do you think is most likely to happen: The Irish go 12-0 or they go 10-2? * There's some debate on the Irish Breakdown Champions Lounge about this: Which is the better Notre Dame run play: Kyren Williams in 2021 vs North Carolina or Reggie Brooks in 1992 vs Michigan? * Fill-in the blank...It's BLANK that in my interview with Notre Dame All-American point guard Hannah Hidalgo, she told me she never talked to UConn head coach Geno Auriemma during her recruiting process. * Fox NFL analyst Greg Olsen says NFL announcers would have an easier time calling NBA games than vice versa, because of the pace of basketball and the accessibility of the sport. In an interview on Pardon My Take, Olsen said the constant stop and start of football forces broadcasters to fill more airtime and have something real to say before and after every play. While basketball is just as complex as a sport, Olsen argued he and other NFL announcers could fake their way through the small pockets of a basketball broadcast more easily. Buy or Sell Olsen's take? * Fill-in the blank...The NFL is going to the XFL kickoff rule this season and the fact that Baltimore Ravins kicker Justin Tucker says he's tried to bulk up because he says kickers are involved in around 25% of the tackles is BLANK. * Joey Chestnut will not be allowed to participate in the Fourth of July Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest because he is endorsing a different hot dog brand. It's actually a plant-based hot dog made by Impossible Foods, which is a competitor to Nathan's. Will the exclusion of the eight-time reigning champion make you more likely or less likely to watch next month's contest?
