On 6 September 2021 six Palestinian political prisoners freed themselves from the high security Gilboa prison in Israel. Two weeks later they were all found and brought back to prison. One of the six men, Zakaria al Zubeidi, was one of the founders of the Freedom Theater in Jenin. In this podcast episode I speak with Mustafa Staiti, who is from the Jenin refugee camp, but currently lives in Holland, about the Freedom Theater and how the theater had an important impact on his life. The theater activities in Jenin refugee camp started in the 90s with the work of a Jewish Israeli woman who was married to a Palestinian, her name was Arna Meir Khamis. She also established the Women in Black to protect Palestinian prisoners and Palestinians crossing checkpoints. Arna used to live with Mustafa and his family and was like a second mother to him. She died of cancer. Her son Juliano made the film Arna's children about the children in the refugee camp. One of the boys that features in this film is Zakaria al Zubeidi. Later he became an important leader of the resistance in the refugee camp. He put down the weapons and together with a Swedish Jew, Jonathan Stanczak and Juliano Meir Khamis, they established the Freedom Theater in which theater was not only fun but also therapeutic. To read more about the Freedom Theater you can go to their website:https://www.thefreedomtheatre.org/You can also watch the full movie Arna's children on YouTubeOr check out the YouTube channel of the Freedom TheaterIf you want to support Stories from Palestine podcast with a donation, if you want to register for the e-mail list or follow the podcast on social media then click on this link:https://podspout.app/storiesfrompalestine

Sharon Wilkins is an artist that won't be constrained to one box or medium. She's acted in multiple shows on Broadway. She's done television shows and commercials. She's shared the silver screen with Hollywood Heavyweights Will Smith, Martin Lawrence and J-Lo in "BAD BOYS 2" and "MADE IN MANHATTAN". This episode is for the artists and those who know they have IT, but aren't exactly sure how to share "IT" with the world. Sharon takes us from her humble Newburgh, NY beginnings and working with Ozzie Davis and Philly's renowned Freedom Theater to Stella Adler's Master Class at NYU, to Will Smith requesting her for a role in "I-ROBOT" and to currently starring in the Tony winning Broadway musical, "AFTER MIDNIGHT". I dare you not to be inspired by her story...and at the end of the episode, Sharon shares a special story about the goodness of Will Smith. We In The Building, son! ***Check out this throwback clip of Sharon Wilkins in Saturday Night Live's hilarious "GAP FAT" commercial parody below: https://view.yahoo.com/show/saturday-night-live/clip/40039393/gap-fat

In this week's program, we hear a conversation with Juliano Mer Khamis, leading Palestinian rights activist, actor, filmmaker and Artistic Director of Freedom Theater in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West bank. He was shot to death in Jenin last month as he was leaving the theatre. In this interview that was recorded six years prior to his tragic death, Juliano Mer Khamis talks about his award-winning film, Arna's Children, which he and Danniel Danniel co-directed.  The interview captures many moving details that are not contained in this important and powerful documentary that follows the lives of several Palestinian children in the Jenin refugee camp from their childhood years in the early 1990's to the second Intifada. These children join a theater group established by Juliano's mother, Arna Mer Khamis, a progressive Jewish Israeli activist and a sculptor. Years later, when they become teens, they are lined up again, this time as posters on a wall showing the pictures of Palestinian fighters who died around the time of the Battle for Jenin in 2002. Why did Yousif commit a suicide attack in Hadera? How did Ala become the leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade in Jenin? What happened to the other children?  In his conversation with U.C. Berkeley History Professor Beshara Doumani, Juliano Mer Khamis discusses many new and very moving details not contained in his film. During the program, we will also hear selections from the music CD The Collection by Lena Chamamyan, a young Syrian artist of Armenian descent who has captured the hearts of audiences in the region with her amazing voice.
