It's been said that German elections are usually dull affairs. Well, whether that's been true in the past, it's certainly not true this time – it's bloody complicated.The result Sunday 23rd, brought success for the CDU/CSU conservatives, with 28.6% of the votes and 208 seats, followed by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) who won 20.8% and 151 seats.The partners who make up the current red-green-yellow “traffic light” government all suffered losses – the SPD Social Democrats lost over 80 seats ending at 121, with the Greens losing 33 seats and securing only 85. The smaller Liberal FDP lost all 91 seats they held as they joined the BSW Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance in struggling to reach the 5% threshold to qualify for parliament, but in a unexpected resurgence the left party (Die Linke) won 64 seats.To dig through the results, explain the acronyms, parse what difference the voting system makes, and explore the ramifications for us in the UK, Frances was joined by Ronja Endres, Boris Kanzleiter, and James Hoctor.Ronja Endres sits on the the SPD party executive and is co-chair of the Bavarian SPD. Climate-related weather like flash floods and extreme heat impacts people experiencing homelessness. Also, an environmental group wants state regulators to tighten water pollution restrictions on a U.S. Steel plant near Pittsburgh which has released oil into the Monongahela River. Friends of the Riverfront released a new plan for recreation in Pittsburgh's three rivers. PECO, formerly the Philadelphia Electric Company, has agreed to add solar energy to its mix of sources that generate electricity for customers in southeast Pennsylvania. Je kralj Matjaž zgolj ime, v katerega so naši predniki enkrat v srednjem veku preoblekli kakega izmed predkrščanskih, mitoloških junakov, ali pa se za likom tega junaka slovenskega ljudskega slovstva vendarle skriva kak dejanski srednjeveški vladar?Čeprav živimo v dobi, ko številne slovenske ljudske pesmi in pripovedke tonejo v precej globoko pozabo, še vedno prav dobro vemo, da v jami pod Peco spi kralj Matjaž, ki se bo, ko se mu bo brada devetkrat ovila okoli kamnite mize, prebudil, s svojimi vojaki premagal vse sovražnike, pregnal krivico s sveta in takrat bodo za nas napočili zlati časi. Da kralj Matjaž torej še naprej vztraja v slovenskem kolektivnem kulturno-zgodovinskem spominu, slej ko prej kaže, da so bile pesmi in pripovedke, v katerih nastopa, njega dni sila priljubljene in široko razširjene med našimi predniki. Ali pa tudi ne in gre živo navzočnost tega lika v naši sodobni zavesti prej povezovati z Ivanom Cankarjem in drugimi književniki, ki so kralja Matjaža vzeli iz polja anonimne, ljudske slovstvene ustvarjalnosti in ga uporabili oziroma predelali za svoje namene in potrebe. Naj bo tako ali drugače, nekaj pri vsem skupaj ni jasno: od kod neki je ta lik sploh prišel v naš kulturni prostor? Je, denimo, kralj Matjaž kratko malo ime, ki so ga vzhodnoalpski Slovani – naši predniki – enkrat v srednjem veku nadeli kakemu staremu, predkrščanskemu, mitološkemu junaku? Ali pa so si pomagali z realno zgodovino in ga ustvarili s pomočjo drobcev odmevnih, hvalevrednih dejanj, ki jih je v resnici storil ta ali oni dejanski srednjeveški vladar, nemara – in to je interpretacija, ki jo menda najpogosteje slišimo v šoli – ogrski kralj iz 15. stoletja, Matija Korvin? No, dr. Marija Klobčar, raziskovalka na Glasbeno-narodopisnem inštitutu ZRC SAZU, pa zdaj precej prepričljivo dokazuje, da je v prajedru slovstvene tradicije o kralju Matjažu sicer res eden izmed srednjeveških vladarjev – a ne Matija Korvin. Discussing this, Simon Cockerham from PECO says: “We make everything that is part of the hobby building model railway industry. As Simon continues: “We use VISI throughout our manufacturing facility, from concept through to the final press or mould tool being created. We have numerous licences of VISI throughout our many departments and we also use VISI to generate laser-cut wooden kits for customers with textures upon them. It is also used to create the instructions that will guide enthusiasts and users on how to assemble the equipment.” “VISI has always been very good for our business as it focuses on just what you need to do the job. Some other software packages that we had before VISI had caused issues due to the high tolerancing of our components and the very deep nature of the machining processes that we have to undertake to achieve the geometries that we require in our press and mould tools.” As one of the world's leading PC-based CAD/CAE/CAM software solutions, VISI incorporates modules such as Modelling, Analysis, Mould Design, Flow, Electrode Design, Die Tool Design, 2.5, 3 and 5-axis Toolpaths, Blanks and Reverse. This provides PECO with the facility to create solid models; design, analyse, validate and prepare mould tool geometries as well as the pre and post-production analysis of plastic parts. With dedicated modules for creating electrodes, designing dedicated progressive die design and press tools, comprehensive machining strategies and even reverse engineering of editable solid models from scanned data – VISI provides the complete package for the company. As Simon adds: “One of the key reasons that we have VISI in our environment and we have been customers for almost 17 years – is because it is very reliable and comprehensive. We have an intimate knowledge of the VISI environment and systems throughout our experienced generations of designers and toolmakers who are here. This means we have the experience to support more junior members of the team here - but even we need assistance now and again because every engineer looks at things differently from time to time.” “Another key reason why we use VISI is down to the complexity of our products. We need jobs to be correct the first time. We also use very expensive machine tools from Roders, Sodick and Hurco as well as high-end peripheral equipment and cutting tools, and VISI has always kept us safe throughout the entire process of generating these tools.” The holistic Hexagon mould and die workflow removes blockers so the team can try new ideas. Simon explained: “We use VISI throughout most of our departments, especially within the wider ‘innovations department'. This means we use VISI for everything from design to producing wooden laser-cut kits for the factory to producing custom machinery for our production facilities. We also use VISI for all of our press and mould tooling too. The benefits of having VISI in the workplace are the integration between plot view, CAD/CAM, and the ability to create surface translations for mould flow analysis and laser ablation files. It streamlines integration between departments.” Many other features the business needs are all connected within a single environment, which makes PECO's training and application of VISI a lot easier for everybody concerned. Over the 17 years PECO has standardised its workflows on Hexagon's mould and die software its had a positive impact on its business. Simon concludes: “We know we have saved a lot of time and money with VISI. The savings are down to the VISI software having all of the components and modules that we require to take our products from concept through to production and export all around the world – all from under one roof.”  

PECO does more than just keep your lights on - they're marking 20 years of their Green Region Open Space Program, which has provided over $2.5 million in grants to preserve, protect, and expand green spaces throughout southeastern Pennsylvania. Spaces like gardens and parks are vital for our physical and mental health, but they can be hard to find in the city, especially in disinvested neighborhoods. In our 83rd episode, we explore the story of Andrew Miller, WGI's Senior Client Manager in our Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Engineering (MEP) department. Andrew's journey from a young engineering enthusiast to a key figure at WGI showcases his dedication, passion, and diverse range of interests. This episode offers a fascinating glimpse into his life, career, and the hobbies that have helped shape him into the professional he is today! Laying the Foundation Andrew, who was born in Orlando, Florida, grew up in the greater Tampa Bay area. Unlike many kids who grew up with LEGO sets, Andrew found himself drawn to K'nex. He enjoyed assembling and disassembling the pieces in unique and creative ways, and with this early fascination with "how things work," it was clear that Andrew was taking his first steps into the world of engineering. A pivotal moment in Andrew's youth came in the form of a TV commercial, which sparked his interest in pursuing a career in engineering. Determined, Andrew applied to only one school—Georgia Tech—where he majored in mechanical engineering after deciding that Robotics was not the path for him. Andrew relished the experience of attending college in the vibrant city of Atlanta, Georgia, a non-traditional college environment that offered many unique experiences and opportunities. From Intern to Senior Client Manager While at Georgia Tech, Andrew participated in an internship co-op program, gaining hands-on experience through multiple internships at the same company. Looking back, Andrew realizes that this experience was crucial in his professional development and has also helped to pave the way for a job offer upon graduation. However, upon graduating in 2010, and amidst the lingering effects of the 2008 recession, Andrew felt the urge to explore new horizons and gain additional professional experience. A job opportunity in Austin, Texas, found through Craigslist, of all places, allowed him to dive deeper into the MEP industry and cut his teeth with one of the largest firms in Texas. This move proved instrumental in his career, providing him with invaluable experience. Andrew's next opportunity came in the form of Big Red Dog, a firm later acquired by WGI. This acquisition opened up numerous opportunities for him, enabling significant growth within the MEP department. Today, as the only Senior Client Manager at WGI, Andrew serves as the point person for all new MEP opportunities, describing his role as: "Working at the intersection of creativity and engineering expertise." The Man Behind the Engineer Beyond his professional life, Andrew is a self-described "Hobby Guy," with his passions including golf and woodworking. Although he has yet to become a scratch golfer, his woodworking skills are impressive, as he's built nearly all of the furniture in his home. Music has also played a significant role in Andrew's life, as he has been playing the trumpet and guitar for many years. Once an avid weightlifter, Andrew now also enjoys days at home alongside his wife and their Shih Tzu - Peter Cornelius (affectionately known as Peco). Engineering for the Community Andrew takes immense pride in creating spaces that serve his community. He finds excitement in seeing people interact with the designs he has helped bring to life and relishes seeing the enjoyment that his work can bring to his clients. This dedication to his community and profession truly sets Andrew apart as a leader in the MEP field! I usually expect others will do the chiming in, but in case not… In reference to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and allowing black people to be members of the church, they have always accepted all people into their membership, which is what you stated incorrectly. What you meant was that from its origins up until 1978, with a few exceptions, black men were not permitted to be ordained to the holy priesthood. They could be baptized and confirmed members of the church like anyone else but not be ordained. It was still an exclusionary policy, but perhaps not as exclusionary as most people understand.
