"You know, anonymity is a luxury as well.” - Mary-Kate Olsen, 2023On Nov 17th, 2023 (that's right THIS year, just a few weeks ago) Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen sat down for an extremely rare interview with Financial Times Fashion to discuss their brand The Row and the meaning of "stealth wealth." We so rarely get a peak into Mary-Kate and Ashley's lives these days, let alone a whole snippet of a conversation between the two of them, so we jumped at the chance to do a whole episode on this article. In this interview, we get a glimpse into Mary-Kate and Ashley's approach to their business, their dynamic as adults, and a few secrets about their brand's Instagram and distaste for interviews. Most importantly, we learn straight from Mary-Kate and Ashley themselves how The Row is and always has been directly influenced by the careers they had in the spotlight (for better or for worse). What stands out the most from this interview is the strength that Mary-Kate and Ashley yield now as women. We can't help but gush about how continually proud we are of them, and how inspired we are that they've been able to take back so much control and power of their lives and careers. And my god, the quotes in this interview are ZINGERS!We hope you enjoy our deep dive into this exclusive interview (major props to the writer Jo Ellison for this impressive feat), and don't forget to read the whole interview in all its glory on Financial Times. You can also watch the video version of this ep by subscribing to our Patreon here.Find us on Social Media!Instagram: @theythoughtiwasyouTikTok: @theythoughtiwasyouBecca: @beccarothLani: @laniharmsNext week's episode is a Q&A and we need YOUR questions!  Email us your questions (or a short & cute voice memo) at theythoughtiwasyou@gmail.comLinks we talk about:Gigi Hadid Fights Off Man Who Grabbed Her Outside Fashion Show Cara Delevingne Talks About 'Paper Towns' “That's not the truth, Ellen”: How Dakota Johnson won her birthday feud against Ellen DeGeneres Design TangentsExploring the creative processes & inspirations that drive change-makers.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show

On May 3rd, 2003, Mary-Kate and Ashley released their last direct-to-video film, The Challenge, marking the end of an era. Yes, the sisters would go on to star in New York Minute a year later, but that would get a theatrical release, have much higher stakes, and was generally completely different.Starting with the release of Billboard Dad in 1998, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, with their manager Robert Thorne and their company Dualstar, carved out a niche in low budget direct-to-video films for teen girls, which was then solidified by the massive success of their sophomore dtv film, Passport to Paris. Over the next 5 years, these movies would function as the anchor for their brand, creating a genre of teenage fantasy travel films, and endearing the twins and their style to girls (and some boys!) all around the world. Though the quality and success of these films waned towards the end of their 5 year run, they were still beloved by many and played a pivotal role in making Mary-Kate and Ashley the most powerful young women in Hollywood. And The Challenge, a film about two estranged twin sisters Shane and Lizzie competing on a Survior-esque reality game show in Mexico, was their last one (and they knew it would be).Months ago, we promised that as soon as the SAG-AFTRA strike was over, we would review this film for the podcast. When we made that promise, we had no idea the strike still had so many months left, and how difficult and painful this year would be. Watching this film now that a tentative deal has been reached was the greatest gift we ever could have been given, and you'll see why.And in typical Becca & Lani fashion, we had simply too much to talk about, so we had to break this episode up into two parts. So,  we present to you the first part of our conversation about Mary-Kate and Ashley's penultimate film. Their final Dualstar direct-to-video feature. Their love letter to us, their fans.We HIGHLY recommend watching this film before listening to this ep, and if you don't still have the DVD or VHS, you can do so by clicking the link in SimplyOlsen's Instagram bio (which we are forever grateful for). You can also watch the video version of this ep by subscribing to our Patreon here.Find us on Social Media!Instagram: @theythoughtiwasyouTikTok: @theythoughtiwasyouBecca: @beccarothLani: @laniharmsOur producer Camara Rauen: @camararollinEmail us: theythoughtiwasyou@gmail.comSupport the show

Best known as acid-tongued, pre-Midol meanie Nellie Oleson from "Little House on the Prairie", Alison Arngrim presents an uproarious evening of storytelling, stand-up, and multi media about life as everyone's favorite toxic pre-teen brat, complete with petticoats and ringlets. In addition to seven years on "Little House on the Prairie," Alison has guest starred on "Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island," among others. After her good friend and "Little House" co-star Steve Tracy died of AIDS in 1986, Alison became a prominent AIDS activist with AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA). In 1988 Alison spoke before the Presidential Commission on AIDS and was the first woman to receive the "Friend in Deed" award at APLA. In 1992 Alison was presented with a resolution by the Los Angeles City Council commending her on her work on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS. In 2004, Arngrim revealed to the world that she was sexually molested as a child and joined the advisory board of Protect, a group that fights to give children a voice in the war against child abuse. Our green bean casserole has finally digested, and we're back talking about the world's most iconic twins. But in today's episode, we're focusing on only one twin, just like the Emmys did in twenty years ago. On May 17th, 2002, the 29th Daytime Emmy Awards Ceremony took place at Madison Square Garden, and notably only nominated Mary-Kate Olsen for So Little Time, not Ashley. This moment might have escaped us completely if Lani hadn't stumbled on a red carpet clip of Mary-Kate and Ashley giving in interview about the nomination, and Mary-Kate sounding remarkably uncomfortable. So we dive into what this could possibly mean. We also revive our old segment, "The Mary-Kate and Ashley Acting Tracker" to try and pinpoint the moment when/if Mary-Kate inched in front of Ashley as the "better" actress. And we spend a very long part of this segment in an alternate reality where Two of a Kind was never cancelled.Ultimately we decide this was probably masterminded by the Dualstar team *cough*RobertThorne*cough* and not anyone's actual opinion that Mary-Kate was more deserving of an acting accolade than Ashley.  And at the end of the day, the Emmy nominations for "Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series" in 2002 were utter chaos.Subscribe to our Patreon to watch the full video version of this podcast here.Find us on Social Media!Instagram: @theythoughtiwasyouTikTok: @theythoughtiwasyouBecca: @beccarothLani: @laniharmsDo you think Mary-Kate was the star of So Little Time?  Do you know what the Daytime Emmy's mean? When Jenna unexpectedly becomes pregnant she begins an affair with her gynecologist Dr. Jim Pomatter. Looking for ways out she sees a pie contest and its grand prize as her chance. Dawn is the “shy and quirky” type, who longs for a true love. Marzetta's so infectious and endearing as Dawn, that she could easily teach a master's class. She lands the one-liners with ease, which put smiles on the audience's faces.” -Adrian Gomez (Albuquerque Journal) Gabriella Marzetta https://gabriellamarzetta.com/ Gabriella is a versatile actor/singer/dancer with a wellspring of depth, a lighthearted quirk with quick comedic timing and an earthy, animated youthful spirit. A lover of collaborative and intimate environments, Gabriella has great talent in building strong ensembles and creating work that is honest, vulnerable, and thought provoking. She has been consistently working since graduating from CAP21 May of 2016. She studied a multitude of styles and techniques such as Meisner, Shaw, Shakespeare, Chekov, Mask Work, Lecoq, On Camera Technique, TV/Film, Clowning, and Linklater Technique. She has a natural intuition that reads strong on stage/screen, loves all things that include a jam session with some dope in the moment harmony, classic rock and folk (Joni Mitchell/Brandi Carlile's #1 fan) is a midwestern gal at heart and LOVES to make people laugh. Gabriella grew up in St. Charles and Geneva, Illinois (about 45 minutes outside of Chicago) and spent most of her childhood playing in the mud and cornfields of Oglesby, Illinois at her grandma and grandpa's house. Very shy as a child, she spent most of her elementary school and middle school days holed up in her house teaching herself songs on the piano and guitar and creating intricate stories on The Sims or playingBarbies, along with writing scripts and filming an assortment of media from her solo talk show "Gab's Corner" to her Barbie Soap Opera "Average" starring the Mary-Kate Olsen barbie doll, to her legendary music videos (most notably her rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.) The first time she stepped into the spotlight was when she first sang in front of a crowd at age 10. It started with her father persuading her into auditioning for the school talent show by buying her the Daphne (Ala Scooby Doo) Barbie Doll. From that moment on, Gabriella continued to be known for her shy exterior and powerhouse voice. She continued down the path of performing by becoming an avid community theatre participant, took acting/dance classes/piano and guitar lessons growing up and even assisted theatre classes for children at different theatre companies as a teenager, resulting in a more confident and extraverted version of Gabriella. Who would have thought putting an extremely introverted child in the arts would help her flourish and realize her full potential?! (jokes...but really. thank god(s) for ART)

Released by ABC Sitcom, Full House is one of the best family comedy shows ever. It is the perfect blend of rib-tickling humour along with a generous dose of heart-warming moments. With a stellar cast, the show was a long-running hit on television. Below are a few facts you never knew about the series.1. Bob Saget, John Stamos, and Dave Coulier went on a road trip to Las Vegas after the first season to help develop a rapport for their on-screen roles. The three forged an amazing bond that helped them enact their characters so well on the show.2. John Stamos, who played Uncle Jesse, was initially assigned the surname Cochran. But he changed it to Katsopolis to suit his character's Greek roots.3. Initially, the producers did not want their viewers to know that Michelle was played by the twin's Mary Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen, so they credited the name as Mary Kate - Ashley Olsen.4. The Fuller House series, which aired in 2016, is a Full House spin-off, which has the extended storyline of the characters DJ Tanner, Steffany Tanner and Kimmy Gibbler.Catch this all-time favourite comedy series exclusively on Netflix. That's some lesser-known facts, and trivia about Full House for today, I shall be back with another podcast pretty soon, until then it's your host Nikhil out here.

In a world where it is considered appropriate to leave your phone face up at the dinner table, where one can find private text messages from an ex screen-captured and posted on Instagram for all to see, and where even Mary-Kate Olsen forces her wedding guests to forfeit their phones into a bowl... sometimes we just need a little bit of advice.  Enter Mallory Ortberg, best known for writings such as an imagined dialogue with baby Foucault to unsolicited advice for Henry VIII's wives to fan fic about Kristen Stewart-as-a-girlfriend. Her "Texts From..." series on The Toast, where she imagined text message conversations between historical and literary figures, became a book last year called Texts From Jane Eyre. And as of November, she's becoming the newest Dear Prudence advice columnist at Slate.  On this week's episode of Note to Self, we asked Mallory to put on her Prudence hat to help us answer just a few of questions we've received from listeners desperately seeking tech advice. We're also taking this opportunity to test out a new app called Focus from our friend Kevin Holesh (the developer behind the Moment app, which tracks how much time you spend on your phone). It yells at you for walking and texting. Or, as we prefer to call it, "wexting." Listen in to hear what she has to say on these questions, and to learn what, exactly, "wexting" is*: Why Won't Anyone Respond to my Emails? "I have noticed that it is often impossible to get people to respond to emails. Even to emails containing a direct question, even to work emails.  People may read them, but often don't respond to them.  Do they forget to, or just not feel the need to respond? Should I be paranoid or is this an issue for other people as well?" – Dulcie Arnold in New York How Can I Avoid Social Media FOMO? "I am constantly using Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc., and I do enjoy using them, so I don't want to just flat out stop. However, I do often get bad cases of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). I am constantly feeling left out (even if I wouldn't even want to go if invited). I never feel content with what I'm doing myself. Even though I know most of these posts are taken to make it look like a really good time (even when it's not), I still fall for it."  – Kynan in Australia Is the "Wexting" Zombie Apocalypse Upon Us? "I'd like to ask about... a phenomenon I call 'cell phone zombies.' It's the people I have to be on the alert to avoid hitting because they're walking the streets with their hands outstretched completely looking intently at their cell phones oblivious of their surroundings." – Liel Biran in Israel In this episode: Mallory Ortberg, Slate's newest Dear Prudence Kevin Holesh, the developer behind the anti-driving/walking and texting app Focus Subscribe to Note to Self on iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn, I Heart Radio, or anywhere else using our RSS feed.
