Marissa chats with Namina Forna about her new YA fantasy - THE MERCILESS ONES - as well as the deeper meanings that books can have for readers, and why it is so powerful to feel seen in the stories we read; upping the stakes over the course of a series by delving deeper into the world and its various systems with every book; honoring the importance of female friendships in young adult fiction, and how you can use those relationships as various foils for your protagonist; building your fantasy world on a foundation of reality and research (think you don't enjoy research? Namina shares some ideas to make it more fun); and the many differences we writers can have when it comes to our personal writing process - and yet, miraculously, we all somehow end up with a book in the end!Books discussed in this episode can be purchased from your local independent bookstore or buy them online from the Happy Writer bookshop.org store (that benefits indie bookstores) at https://bookshop.org/shop/marissameyer

In this special joint-bookish episode, both Laura and Jo read The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna. In this world, girls are outcasts by blood and warriors by choice, but, will this book make it onto the shelf? Or will it split the sand for these two hosts?Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs. But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the colour of impurity--and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death. Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki--near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire's greatest threat.- - - - - - - - - DID YOU KNOW? Horrifying monsters that can kill you through shriek or claw can only be fought by other monsters, right? So training an elite army out of the young, immortal and super-strong girls you've been routinely murdering as 'demons' thanks to your severely patriarchal religion makes great sense, right? Err... right? Find out which colour our blood ran when we read Namina Forna's powerfully feminist 'The Gilded Ones', and whether we thought it deserved a Gold star for effort - or should be subjected to its Final Death... You can find more about Belinda Missen and her books here. And you can find Terence MacManus and his books here. Special thanks to Quincas Moreira for the creative commons intro/outro music, 'Sabor Moreno' (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music?nv=1)
Get ready to dip your hands in molten gold and armour yourself with your own immortal blood - we're looking at Namina Forna's powerfully feminist YA novel 'The Gilded Ones'. Will this story of *literally* smashing the patriarchy be worth your time? Or should it be subjected to its Final Death? Once you've heard what I have to say on it, hop along to the Talking Fiction Discord server to have your say too! I'd love to continue the conversation with you :-) And if you'd like to hear the chat I had about this book with Harper Collins (HQ) romance novelist Belinda Missen, you can find the 'Science, Sex and Sorcery' (S3) podcast here. We take it in turns each episode to recommend an SFF or Romance book to each other, then read and review it. We also tend to have some WILDLY diverging opinions on our books, so it's always a fun time! The Gilded Ones episode should be out in about a week from TTF37's release date :-) Talk soon! Intro/outro music for this episode is 'Elevators Need Rock Too' by Spence, courtesy of the YouTube Audio Library.
Titles, as Herr Doktor Doktor Vincent Diesel, esq. O.B.E. could tell you, are important things. They must be recorded for posterity, quite literally in the case of Dogberry: "But masters, remember that I am an ass, though it be not written down, yet forget not that I am an ass." Mark and Walker are bereft of such honorifics; "Gilded Ones" apparently only applies if you go the full gilt route, which sounds way too painful to endorse. Whether philosophers get any titles past "lovers of wisdom" is a matter of some controversy; Mark weighs in all the same. Hello, hi! It's time for a book review round up! I was so excited to record this podcast that I kept reading "one more book" so I would have enough to share with you.... however this episode now contains 14 books for review! Settle in, you're sure to find something to welcome into your reading life! If you want to see more of my discussion about books I plan to read please join me on Instagram @medium.lady! When it comes to books this spring I read 7 Fiction, 3 Personal Development and 4 Non-fiction! I'll rank these 14 books from my least favourite to my most favourite and I do that in three categories: PROBABLY PASS: Ever read a book, then shared with someone "nah, you could skip it"? These are my bottom three books. They're all either books that didn't deliver on their promises, or books that left me wanting more, either from the story, the writing or the perspective. KNOW YOURSELF: All books are not written for all people. I'm going to reach for more books that suit me, the better I know myself! The books in this category make up the necessary middle of the pack, they weren't bad, but I'm not going to recommend them to everyone, unless you identify with a particular element or feature of the book. MEDIUM LADY MUST READS: These are books I liked the most, and also are books that I feel will appeal to the broadest group of readers. These books not only suit me and my reading style but I feel like they have something to offer another reader! Books discussed in today's episode include: (in no particular order): The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna Maybe You Should Talk To Someone by Lori Gottlieb Skin Care by Caroline Hirons Professional Troublemaker by Luvvie Ajayi-Jones Kingdom of Ash and Tower at Dawn by Sarah J Maas Little Women by Louisa May Alcott The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Vander Kolk The Skin We're In by Desmond Cole Burnout by Emily and Amelia Nagoski Delicious by Ruth Reichl How to Break Up with your Phone by Catherine Price The Glass Hotel by Emily St. John Mandel Noopiming by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson Music is Climb from The Ghost in the Machine and I am grateful for its availability for use on this podcast through creative commons licensing.
